Convention to resume normal schedule today?

CNN reports that the thankfully moderate impact of Hurricane Gustav will mean that the Republican convention will get back to business.  At this point, they have no article with specifics, but apparently their sources indicate that the Gustav-imposed restrictions on campaigning in St. Paul will be lifted.  The schedule will return to normal, and the speakers originally slated to speak tonight will do so.

Later this morning, the RNC will have a press call to discuss their plans in detail.  I’ll have more for you after 10 am CT.  Right now, it looks like we can expect a full day.

For those of you who missed it, here are the speeches by Laura Bush and Cindy McCain from Day 1, which comprised the only real event from the stage:

Let’s Rock!

Cindy needs to take some attire lessons from Laura. That gold dress is a bit distracting.

I hope things go back to normal. Who will be speaking today?

jencab on September 2, 2008 at 8:00 AM

Who’s speaking today?

ninjapirate on September 2, 2008 at 8:01 AM

Woo hoo! I can’t wait!

powerpro on September 2, 2008 at 8:02 AM

Fred Thompson, Joe Lieberman, and President Bush, I know those for sure. I think Joe has the 10 o’clock spot. Bush at 9. Not sure about Fred.

All i can say is FINALLY!!!!!! Let’s get this thing rocking.

David Rasbold on September 2, 2008 at 8:02 AM

I’ve heard Fred! and Lieberman speak today, Joe in prime time.
I agree that even if Cindy looks great, pearls and diamonds at a convention is just begging for bad things the next day.

Marcus on September 2, 2008 at 8:04 AM

Woohoo! Time show the people just how dangerous Obama’s ideas are.

lodge on September 2, 2008 at 8:04 AM

Yay! Let’s get on with it. :)

Good observation.

Somebody in the Campaign really needs to get Cindy over to Sears, or Kohl’s, or Wal-Mart and pick out some normal people clothes. Her wardrobe is costing us votes.

coldwarrior on September 2, 2008 at 8:07 AM

The Republicans need to get a governor to spend some time telling the country just what a governor does, and comparing that to what a Senator does.

Agreed. I hate to say it but, she looks like a snobby elitest dressed that way.

The obvious choice would be Jindal…if he has time.

SouthernGent on September 2, 2008 at 8:14 AM

Fred! Fred! Fred! and Bush, too :) I’m very happy.

I liked Cindy’s dress and hair yesterday. She maybe shouldn’t have chosen hurricane day as the day to wear it since it looks like a fun party dress. But whatevs.

Don’t forget…Obama is running against McCain. Two Senators. The way the left and the media have been going, one would think Obama is running against Palin.

The veeps are insignificant IMHO. One may has well be a rock, and the other a potted plant.

Good news, but the rioting anarchists.

Buy Danish on September 2, 2008 at 8:29 AM

So, the timeline for the past few and new few days (sorta-kinda accurate):

28AUG:
- McCain’s congratulatory commercial makes him look nice.
- Hussein gives his “Sermon on the Mount Olypus” speech.
- Late: Rumors about McCain’s VP selection begin.

29AUG:
- Rumors continue bigtime, to the point of people finding flight plans for private jets. Suspense builds. Didn’t Hussein give a speech or something yesterday? I’ll have to check.
- Palin eventually confirmed to be pick. People excited (glad it’s Palin, and glad it’s not Lieberman).
- Noon: Palin introduced, the crowd goes wild. Gonna have to check about some event Hussein did yesterday.
- News coverage: All Palin, all the time. Hussein gave a speech?

30AUG: Start of Labor Day weekend. People go off to their things with Palin-mania on their minds. Hussein did what?
- Palin appearances. News still all Palin, all the time. Base is ecstatic. Contributions rise. People, even Dems and Hillary supporters, volunteer. (Hint: EVERYONE can volunteer, too.)
- Euphoria dying down a bit, but substance remains.

31AUG: People still on Labor Day weekend holiday, and not paying too much attention beyond, “Wow, Sarah Palin’s hot!”
- “Pregnancygate1″ arises (everyone at beach, though).
- News of Hurricane Gustav.
- Hussein did give a speech! Okay.
- RNC cancelled, curtailed, or something, opening way for, shall we say, certain alterations on the appearances of certain individuals there, alterations which could be beneficial the GOP (Which side was God on again, Michael?).

01SEP: Labor Day. People still gone. Some stupid Internet rumors going around about hot Sarah Palin.
- “Pregnancygate2″ made active to A. discredit, deprecate, and defuse Pregnancygate1 (Oh, that’s all there is to it. Okay. At least they’re getting married); and B. get it out there while everyone is still not paying attention and dazed by Palin.
- Gustav hits. Not as bad as could be, but gives GOV Jindal opportunity to prove he’s not a Blanco (no, I won’t apologize for the totally unintended but strangely fitting pun).
- Hussein’s speech. Oh yeah. Good talker.
- RNC called on account of aiding those in need. Wives speak, but that’s it.
- Pg1 dying an agonizing death, and Pg2 being adopted as standard “issue facing the campaign.”

02SEP: People back from Labor Day weekend. Yeah, Sarah Palin’s daughter is pregnant. It happens. It guess they are doing the honorable thing.
- RNC moving back into full active mode given Gustav’s weakened hit. Regular convention euphoria may be engaged, but schedule still a bit caddywumpus, so certain people may still not be too prominent. Palin-mania has faded, but hopefully solidified into something more substantive.

So what we have here is an excellent timing. The GOP/McCain campaign:

1. Sucked the air out of Hussein’s big speech,
2. Ramped up enthusiasm and made gains with the base,
3. Got some dirty laundry out of the way while people were distracted by holiday and disaster,
4. Looked vaguely self-sacrificing by curtailing a convention,
5. Possibly mitigated certain disadvantageous appearances by people at the convention, and yet
6. Still have time to whoop up some minimal bounce from a convention.

Not back for less than a week’s time and effort.

Karl Rove, if you’re out there and responsible: Nice job! I could use you in a few years!

Up with McCain! Down with Hussein! Sarah Palin’s still hot!

Tommygun on September 2, 2008 at 8:45 AM

The convention was VERY abbreviated yesterday and Xcel Center wouldn’t open any concessions, so unless you brought your own water bottles, you had to find one of few water fountains. Elevators and escalators are really at a minimum. But! Even with some of the limitations the first day, people were friendly, engaging and pumped up. I think this will be a good convention – just getting started! And, some concessions will open today for water, etc in some areas, so should be easier on people. This will be a good day!

David Rasbold on September 2, 2008 at 8:02 AM

I hope GWB is not speaking at tonight’s convention. That just plays right into The One’s screed about the “twins” appearing in the Twin Cities. GWB lost the right to speak at the convention when he totally mismanaged his press and public relations operation for his entire Presidency and allowed the Democrats and the Drive-By Media to frame and define him.

They should replace Bush on the schedule with a video feed from Bobby Jindal. He deserves an atta boy for PROPERLY coordinating evacuation and disaster planning for New Orleans and the rest of Louisiana. We need to show the people that Republicans are good at this sort of task, like we’re good at most other things when we put our minds to it.

I’m loving the idea of having Joe speak in the 10 pm slot. JOEMENTUM BABY!

Outlander on September 2, 2008 at 8:54 AM

I’ll never let The One tell me what to think. Hate to tell you, but if he doesn’t speak The One will say it proves his point is correct.

Palin needs to deliver one helluva speech at the convention to nullify the impression that she is a lightweight. We know she can talk well without a teleprompter, but she needs to knock the ball out of the park.

Disturb the Universe on September 2, 2008 at 9:03 AM

I love Cindy McCain’s wardrobe and would be very sad if she started shopping at Sears. She’s earned her money through a legal family business and should be able to spend at least some of it on herself.

Please listen to Laura Ingraham, either live right now, or on the replay.

She is ripping, and I mean pulverizing, the left on their treatment of Sarah Palin.

It’s on right now, 8AM central time.

My first reaction was that she looks way too hot for a campaign for President. But cutting-edge style in a vapid supporting role only made Jackie O! an international Goddess. Seems the Dems liked her ok, yes?

Jaibones on September 2, 2008 at 9:26 AM

Gustav fizzling. Michael Moore making frowny-face.

Yep. It’s not that. Palin is very new to the national scene and like any candidate for high office, she bears the burden to show she is qualified for the job she seeks. She has an excellent opportunity to define herself relatively free of the Democrats. She needs to put in a Mary Lou Retton performance here — perfect 10s.

And then, just think of all the red meat we’ll have against the Democrats… Those vicious personal attacks against her are going to backfire. Nobody except for political junkies heard any of them in the first instance, because everyone was doing Labor Day stuff and watching Gustav coverage. So most people will just hear “inklings” about her daughter being pregnant and won’t hear the nastiness with it. Palin will come out, give a great speech, and then we can start running attack ads about how vicious the Democrats have been to her.

Meh. There’s a way to dress expensive, but not gaudy. Clothes are supposed to draw attention to the wearer, not to the clothes themselves.

fossten on September 2, 2008 at 9:53 AM

Eight years ago the impeached president was honored at their convention even though the nominee had run away from him his entire campaign. This year Obama gave a spot to ex-preident Carter to speak. When Blanco/Nagin put every obstacle in the way of Bush’s help and caused the disaster of Katrina, our spineless Republican congress tried to get out in front of the Democrats to critize Bush. Now, our brave candidate can’t even honor our current President for allowing him to speak at the RNC. McCain wants all the credit for the surge. Without Bush putting everything he had into getting the surge, exactly what would McCain be running on now?

Oleta on September 2, 2008 at 10:23 AM

Mrs. McCain, it’s kinda like having a crush on the teacher.

Speaking of hot, Cindy’s visited Georgia during it’s crisis. Has Obama yet? Will Obama ever?

I’m looking forward to the convention getting underway but hoping the hateful, bigoted, ethically-challenged-politician-turned preacher-turned politician wannabe-rockstar Huckabeen will not speak and ruin the whole thing causing me to have to change the channel and go barf!

Shelby on September 2, 2008 at 2:18 PM

So has anybody seen a schedule? Last time I looked about 30 minutes ago, it wasn’t posted on the convention site, and the last thing I got from the RNC was the conference call announcement (which I couldn’t do).
