Biden on Palin: “She’s a governor, that’s no mean feat”

posted at 3:33 pm on September 2, 2008 by Allahpundit

It comes at around 37 minutes in. The questioner’s trying to bait him into saying something more “Bidenesque,” but he must have gotten a talking-to after taking heat — undeservedly — for complimenting her looks a few days ago because he’s the model of civility here, right down to defending Bristol Palin from media scrutiny. Smart thinking, just like Team Barry’s new anti-McCain ad is smart: Again, no mention of Palin at all, just a whole lot of McSame. The media will do their dirty work for them over the next few weeks. Why muddy their own hands in the meantime? Click the image to watch.

Screw Biden.

He’s a loose cannon.

madmonkphotog on September 2, 2008 at 3:35 PM

Heh…Biden *may* get it he is after all a Senator of LONG standing….

You kiss someone while stabbing them in the back, the nutroots are not that sophisticated.

Joe is just trying to keep “expectation tm” from being raised too high for him.

sven10077 on September 2, 2008 at 3:36 PM

“Children are off limits.” Yeah, well once you learn a few things about Joe’s gang you don’t really have to wonder why he said that.

The media will do their dirty work for them over the next few weeks. Why muddy their own hands in the meantime? –Allahpundit

Exactly. This is exactly the right approach for them to take. (Darn it.) Hopefully, Biden’s nature will get the best of him and he won’t be able to stick to the script, just like he wasn’t supposed to talk politics on Gustav landfall day but couldn’t help himself. But for now, letting the media do the mudslinging while their hands stay clean is the way to go for Obama and Biden.

The media will do their dirty work for them over the next few weeks. Why muddy their own hands in the meantime?

That’s the thing…Obama/Biden can play this like they find all this to be oh so inappropriate, while the MSM goes after Palin like a rabid dog. It surely is a strategic advantage (as the media bias has always been)…as always we just have to hope people out there in the real world are as grossed out by this feeding frenzy as I think they are.

Why is the McCain camp so quiet on this? They’ve been so aggressive on counter attacks.

I agree tying Bush to McCain is a smart move. However, most of the Obama ads lately have just been about McCain and Bush. Isn’t the biggest obstacle for Sen. Obama is that he’s an unknown politician? Shouldn’t he also be doing ads defining himself?

Terry Ann,

I don’t expect being the “Anti-McCain” will work any better for Obama than being the “Anti-Obama” was working for McCain.

Can’t win playing defense, and while Obama has a lead and wants to defend it, McCain is busy moving the goalposts.

How does McCain/Palin win? They don’t. Obama loses.

MarkTheGreat on September 2, 2008 at 3:53 PM

Team McCain’s rollout for Palin has been horrible. They should have made sure that people wouldn’t have found her to be a token. They have absolutely no control over there narrative.

Smart thinking, just like Team Barry’s new anti-McCain ad is smart: Again, no mention of Palin at all, just a whole lot of McSame.

Palin needs to go out there and bash Bush

“The major failure of the Bush administration is that he called America to consumption rather than sevice”

Then she needs to get a direct hit on Obama…

I’ve certainly tweaked AP for his pessimism any number of times, but I think it unfair of Russ to claim that AP just “gets off on creating controversy.” He was just as pessimistic when he wasn’t blogging and fwding news items to other sites (at least, the stories I saw were almost invariable of the “bad news” variety). I’m sure he’s aware that his tone generates traffic, but that’s just a bonus.

I note that Russ is “from Winterset.” If he lived in NYC, maybe he’d be more pessimistic, too.

ernesto on September 2, 2008 at 3:53 PM

You could start by telling the truth.

Little things like most of that 90% were votes were on things like resolutions declaring National Brocolli Month.

When it mattered, McCain voted the same side as Bush less than half the time.

MarkTheGreat on September 2, 2008 at 3:57 PM

This “damning with faint praise” by Biden is what the media should be doing, too. Ironically, it would be more effective in marginalizing her. In their frenzied attempts to destroy her, they’ve badly overplayed their hand.

I can’t wait for the polls after Palin’s speech. Total meltdown!

Shouldn’t a Senator know something about the Governor of Alaska? I thought he was “experienced.”

Ronnie on September 2, 2008 at 4:00 PM

I have said it once before on this site and I will say it again. For those who are worried about how Palin will match up against Bidon don’t know that she has already faced a long time Senator. I wouldn’t count Frank Murkowski as a light weight nobody either. He served Alaska for many years in Washington. She not only handled her self well she won the nomination overwhelmingly. Then she faced a former Dem Gov. who while he was serving was popular as well. Now she governs Alaska with an 80% approval rating. So, maybe Bidon will be asking himself like the other poloticians who have faced her, “What just happened. Why did I loose?”

I’m not sure if bashing Bush helps either. Aren’t you basically conceding to the Democrats that another Republican has no business in the WH? I think McCain can contrast himself from Bush but bashing I think will prove futile. Let’s face it if they debate is who is less like Bush, Obama is going to win hands down. I think it’s better for McCain just to get his ideas and his message out, instead getting into a argument with Obama over something he’s going to win anyway.

Obama says that he wants change. Hmmmm….

The sort of change wafted about in just about every presidential campaign (if you’re not the incumbent) is go after the other guy as an “insider”….

Hmmmm, once again….

Sooo…these folks now seem to all be kvetching on cue that Gov. Palin hasn’t got any experience…but they don’t want “insiders”….

…and you get experience by being “inside”….

…and Mr. O picked a running mate who himself became an “insider” when Mr. O was a callow 11-year-old….

I’m soooooo confused…I’ve all but got this whole “dialectic” thing figured out, and then they through me this curveball.

I guess if “it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Yes the Dems are hanging themselves on this and other issues. I don’t think it shows lots of confidence to jump through hoops and do all the research to debunk, just because of an unsubstantiated accusation/rumor. Let the leftists do their own work and let it sit out there until they debunk their own rumors.

Obama didn’t jump through hoops on the birth certificate thing. He let the right make fools of themselves for a long time before someone debunked it. He’ll hold that ace in the hole until needed.

Make your accuser provide the evidence (as long as your “in the right”). In the meantime, ignore it. But after the fact McCain’s camp should be all over the media morons for their lies, each and every time. That’s what I haven’t seen.

Well, I was going to blog about this but decided to toss in my question in here. When Biden said that “Children are off limits” why did he say that? But I’ll probably have to rely on Occam’s Razor and it’s because doing so (attacking the children) will only continue to backfire big time against the O/B ticket. No? Or does it have to do with Palin’s support for abstinence before marriage education and that Biden at one time in his senatorial career also supported abstinence education, of which I believe, there was a bill to help pay for that about decade earlier? Can anyone confirm that one?

Speedwagon82 on September 2, 2008 at 5:09 PM

What nobody seems to have mentioned yet, is that Obama, when selecting a VP, chose someone strong in an effort to make up for his weaknesses. McCain, when selecting a VP, chose someone who doesn’t really add to any weakness (except maybe to social cons who didn’t believe him), he chose someone that looks a little thin resume-wise, showing that he doesn’t need a lot of help. Does this speak to their respective self-images?

Vashta.Nerada on September 2, 2008 at 5:18 PM

ernesto on September 2, 2008 at 3:53 PM

Easy.
1. With the exception of the minimum wage increase, all the domestic accomplishments that the Democrats are patting themselves on the back for passing were Bush initiatives.
2. Foreign policy- McCain proposed the surge, Bush took up the mantle, Obama opposed it… and now Anbar is turned over and we have a plan for troops to come home with victory. Everyone but Obama and MoveOn.org know that the surge worked.
3. McCain opposed Bush on all the issues people are pissed about, including Iraq. Face facts- almost everyone supporting going into Iraq, then rightfully called it for the mess that it was. McCain is the guy who called it first and lead the charge to successfully fix it.
4. Obama votes either down the party line or not at all. Period. Where is this CHANGE he speaks of? The one thing that he inevitably links CHANGE to is Bush policies… which are over in January even in Obama loses.

Obama, Biden’s Son Linked by Earmarks

Chakra Hammer on September 2, 2008 at 5:27 PM

Maybe it’s me, but after watching the video, it looks (and sounds) as if Biden just twisted his words around and meant to compliment Palin by inferring that being Governor is no “small” feat.

Dang, I hate defending this dufus.

dugan on September 2, 2008 at 5:55 PM

From my quick review of Delaware vs Alaska, Delaware has an operating budget of about 4 billion dollars whereas Alaska’s is close to 8 Billion dollars (with nearly ten billion dollars in revenues) exclusive of the construction budgets of both states. Arkansas’ state budget is only 4.3 billion dollars today (imagine what it was when Billary were in charge of that state). Not bad Sarah.

eaglewingz08 on September 2, 2008 at 6:49 PM

There is a chance that US Senator Biden is showing a bit more respect towards the Governor of Alaska because someone, potentially the Governor of Delaware, reminded US Senator Biden that (the 100 US) Senators rank slightly below (the 50 State) Governors, due to:
– exclusivity (100 is less exclusive than 50)

– the reporting structure (Governors report only to the people of their state)

– the fact that when a US Senator leaves office (not due to retirement or an election reversal) it is the Governor of the state who may provide in interim replacement. Usually, the replacement is someone whit verifiable credentials.

Note: all of these things are usually taught in (or before) 8th grade, so this is more of a General Knowledge / Qualification for Office test than an IQ test.
