As hoped: Fred to defend Palin in primetime tonight

posted at 5:30 pm on September 2, 2008 by Allahpundit

Turns out I’m not the only one who thought it’d be a good idea.

Fred Thompson will forcefully defend the selection of Sarah Palin tonight in a speech Republicans are characterizing as “red meat.” He will argue that the feeding frenzy over Palin’s is the result of “panic” from the Democrat-friendly mainstream media.

“What a breath of fresh air Governor Sarah Palin is. She is from a small town, with small town values, but that’s not good enough for those folks who are attacking her and her family. Let’s be clear, the selection of Governor Palin has the other side and their friends in the media in a state of panic. She is a courageous, successful, reformer, who is not afraid to take on the establishment.”…

The bulk of Thompson’s speech will be a testimonial on behalf of John McCain, his character and his leadership. John McCain has “the kind of character that civilizations from the beginning of history have sought in their leaders.”

He’ll hit Obama on abortion, too. I’m under the weather, so to feed your insatiable appetite for all things Palin, I lazily offer you this video of her taking on two opponents in the 2006 Alaska gubernatorial debate. I only watched a few minutes but that was long enough to explode the left’s caricature of her as an airheaded imbecile. Click the image to watch.

Update: A sneak preview of the speech from Human Events: Palin was a “masterstroke,” says Fred.

Not that I don’t think she could kick anyone’s butt, though.

Huh. Skipped my way through the AK gov. debate video, stopping to listen to Sarah here and there. They discussed crime in rural Alaska. That can’t be right — P. Diddy says there’s no crime in Alaska! They don’t have crackheads or even black people according to P. Diddy. I’m sure he’s not wrong, so I wonder why they discussed it in that debate? Maybe it was just a hypothetical.

aero on September 2, 2008 at 5:56 PM

I get the feeling that if Fred makes a great case for Palin, the lefty spin will be along these lines; the sexist Republicans obviously think that woman are weak and need to be defended. For shame!

Or am I being too cynical?

landshark on September 2, 2008 at 5:56 PM

If someone can defend Sarah Palin and her daughter perfectly well tonight, it is Fred Thompson.

I remember reading a long time ago that he, too, had to face the same trials with his first wife just as Bristol and her husband-to-be are now. If you look at his Wikipedia entry and calculate dates of birth and marriage, you would see that he first married at the same age as Bristol – seventeen.

And look what happened next. Sure, they divorced years later and he remarried, but the ex still remains friends with him.

So, let’s not “misunderestimate” Fred tonight. For my part, I’m getting more popcorn!

newton on September 2, 2008 at 5:56 PM

SarahCuda says she needs no defenders:

PALIN QUOTE OF THE DAY. Bill Kristol:

A nervous young McCain staffer took it upon himself to explain to Palin the facts of life in a national campaign, the intense scrutiny she’d be under from the media, the viciousness of the assault that she’d be facing, etc.:

Palin: “Thanks for the warning. By the way, do you know what they say the difference is between a hockey mom and a Pit Bull?”

McCain aide: “No, Governor.”

Palin: “A hockey mom wears lipstick.”

http://gregransom.com/prestopundit/

Damiano on September 2, 2008 at 5:57 PM

I enjoyed the debate video. Sarah Palin was direct, clear, and concise in her responses. She struck me as someone who knows where she stands.

The Democrat contender seemed to pander a bit–giving populist answers. The Independent contender (a former Republican) confused me. Perhaps that was due to my ignorance of Alaskan state politics. He often spoke at length yet when he finished, I wasn’t sure where he stood. In fact, I had often forgotten the original question after listening to him. I think as an independent his responses were geared more to winning votes from an uncertain group of voters–therefore his responses seemed a bit murky and veiled.

We all know perfection is not possible–I don’t expect anyone to be perfect but what I like in my elected officials is:

1. A clear understanding of their positions
2. That they don’t ride the fence
3. Their words are followed by corresponding deeds

I don’t have to agree with everything a politician believes (or a CEO, Officer, etc) in order to respect them. I do not agree with G.W. Bush at times–yet he stays firm to his beliefs and acts accordingly. I can vote based on that. Same with McCain and…gasp…Hillary Clinton. I know where she stands. I respect that about her.

Obama? That empty suit spins and flips faster than Jean Francois Kerry.

Does this mean that a politician can’t change an opinion? No. Not at all. Abortion for example. I think that is an issue where many of us change our position–depending on our personal experiences in life and on our level of knowledge of the issue.

I’m not saying he’s going to, they just better not sit back on this, like Bush did for the past 7 years.

I know Mr. Maverick thought he built up some good will with the media and probably thought the family/kids weren’t EVER going to be touched, but the Kos-morons and Alan Colmes et al are proving they don’t care.

In skipping around in the debate video, I did not hear a single “um” or “uh” from Sarah. She seemed calm, collected, extremely well-informed, poised, and intelligent. She did not hesitate at any point that I saw. Her adorable northern accent was even minimal. Very nice. I don’t know how she’ll match up against Biden, but she’s clearly no lightweight as so many on the left seem to assume. I don’t see a Quayle coming out of this, put it that way.
