Andrea Mitchell: Is Palin just too darned popular?
posted at 4:09 pm on September 2, 2008 by Allahpundit
I don’t think that’s what she’s saying, although it is admittedly her comeback to Thune’s point about the base’s enthusiasm. What she means, I take it, is that it’s hard for voters to absorb so many revelations about an unknown candidate all at once, especially in an age of 24-hour cable news where they just keep coming. The effect is cacophonous, to the point where some people might simply throw up their hands, decide it’s not worth trying to parse what’s true, what’s false, and what’s important, and conclude that she’s dubious because, well, the media certainly seems to think she is and they’re a reliable enough proxy. That is to say, this may be a test of whether a wild-card VP selection is feasible in the modern media age. Maybe it isn’t. Maybe you need someone like Biden or Romney, whose weak points have already been vetted and incorporated into their “price” on the political stock market, in order not to be thrown hopelessly off-message and put perpetually on the defensive. Exit question: Would Pawlenty’s “stock” have shown less volatility? Better exit question: Does that matter if his price was lower? Click the image to watch.

The one nice thing about the media pile on is that the bar for her speech is being set really low. If she knocks it out of the park like we’re all hoping, it could be game-changing like no other VP speech.
Of course that means there’s a lot of pressure too…
BadgerHawk on September 2, 2008 at 4:11 PM
That woman is an idiot.
And I’m not talking about Palin.
HarryBalzac on September 2, 2008 at 4:12 PM
The volatility is in the personalities on the left. Everything else is of minor consequence. After all, we know that they are not beyond forging any papers, if they don’t find what they want. I can’t see how our pick for VP matters one iota to them.
progressoverpeace on September 2, 2008 at 4:13 PM
There is a lot of pressure, but, again, don’t mistake Sarah Palin for a newbie. The woman has given speeches before, and apparently pretty good ones.
Kensington on September 2, 2008 at 4:13 PM
No, you are missing the mark here. That would be too much information. She is criticizing too much enthusiasm. Which is exactly what Thune just finished saying they need.

SDarchitect on September 2, 2008 at 4:18 PM
Probably the only somewhat viable criticism, is there too much info to absorb in 48 hours.
However, we have 60 days…
And argument can be made that the reason an insider has an advantage is that they are an insider, but we don’t want an “insider” we want a doer.
Question: Can the public absorb all of the “revelations” about the special interests that Obama and Biden are beholding to? Or is it so overwhelming that the MSM will just ignore it.

Yes, because they would not fear him as much. He represents “more of the same,” and they were clearly all set to go with that meme before the Palin curve ball came across the plate.
Conversely, Pawlenty’s “stock” would not have carried the potential for as high a payoff.

Sarah Palin is Ayla, the main character of Jean Auel’s Earth’s Children novels. She is a Cro-Magnon woman who was raised

My child arrived just the other day
came to the world in the usual way
but there fish to catch
bills to pay
she learned to hunt while I was away
and she was talkin’ before I knew it
and as she grew
she’d say I’m gonna be like you, mom
ya know I’m gonna be like you
And the moose in the oven
and the fishin’ hole
little girl flew to the northern pole
when ya comin’ home, mom
I don’t know when
but we’ll be together then, yeah
ya know we’ll have a good time then
My kid turned ten just the other day
she said thanks for the rod mom c’mon let’s play
can ya teach me to fish
I said not today
I got a lot to do
she said that’s ok
and she turned away
and she never seemed hurt
she said I’m gonna be like her, yeah
ya know I’m gonna be like her
And the moose in the oven
and the fishin’ hole
little girl flew to the northern pole
when ya comin’ home, mom
I don’t know when
but we’ll be together then, yeah
ya know we’ll have a good time then
She came from college just the other day
so much like a woman I just had to say
I’m proud of you
can ya sit for a while
she shook her head
and she said with a smile
what I’d really like mom
is to borrow the shot gun
see ya later
gonna have some fun
And the moose in the oven
and the fishin’ hole
little girl flew to the northern pole
when ya comin’ home, mom
I don’t know when
but we’ll be together then, yeah
ya know we’ll have a good time then
I’ve long since retired
my daughter moved away
I called her up just the other day
I’d like to see you if you don’t mind
she said I’d love to mom if I could find the time
ya see this campaign’s a hassle
and kids have the flu
but it’s sure nice talkin’ to you, mom
it’s been sure nice talkin’ to you
and as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
she’d grown up just like me, yeah
my girl, was just like me.
And the moose in the oven
and the fishin’ hole
little girl flew to the northern pole
when ya comin’ home, mom
I don’t know when
but we’ll be together then, yeah
ya know we’ll have a good time then

“She’s supposed to be a victim damn it!”
I’d ask Sarah Palin to be my Platoon Leader even if we were marching into a deadzone or high-radiation event recovery.

The media has really missed it on this one. Asshats like Maureen Dowd are so out of touch with America that the best they can hope to do with their sworn political enemies is find a compartment to place them in and run with it — hoping that their mindthink catches on. They have Palin categorized as perky beauty queen who managed to fool the rubes back home. Big mistake.

Whatever she has done to have 80% popularity in Alaska, Governor Palin needs to put into her speech tomorrow. She has galvanized the GOP base, but independent voters will need to be convinced.
But then again, those 80% in Alaska who like her are not all Republicans, are they?

Sarah Palin is a force the liberals cannot at all reckon with. BigD at 4:17 pm is right on the money.
She’s shaping up to be a political iconoclast of the first order as long as she can take the heat from the insane left, which I’d bet big money that she can.

It must be downright harrowing for some of them to figure out they’ve lived their lives based on lies, after an abortion or two under their belt and a looming middle- to old-age without a family of their own.
That kind of pain would probably makes some of them want to doubledown rather than reassess. They have my sympathy, actually.

The VP pick has never been a significant factor in the election outcome. It’s great that Palin has energized the base, but let’s not be silly enough to pretend that any discussion of her strengths and weaknesses somehow damages the ticket in the end. Let’s not inflate the influence of the MSM… or of the blogosphere.

That is why they are so angry and why this pick is no joke, probably the most game changing one in ten elections.
McCain backers were down, dispirited and voting against Barry….now they have something to believe in and we have a credible face for the Party under the age of 50. I am not worried at all with Palin, Jindal, Cantor and others coming up from the minors.
The party will be fine and hats off to John McCain for his ballsy pick…..
sven
p.s. the donks’ narrative is evolving now they are trying to avoid the perception backlash that will come if Sarah pulls tomorrow off.
sven10077 on September 2, 2008 at 4:33 PM
I am not so sure whether having Palin on the ticket can win that many voters in addition. Many lefty women are too jealous to like her and others already prefer McCain over Obama.
What it certainly did is enthuse the base, which was really important and I’m even more confident than before that McCain will win this election.
The MSM are hurting themselves with their increasing leftwards bias. Let them sling mud, it keeps them busy while Americans make their choices based on their own assessment.

I think the liberal drama here is 18 months of Hillary vs The World and the MSM and Democratic Party felt like they were the arbiters of free speech concerning ‘women in politics’, ‘women’s issues’, ‘women breaking through glass ceilings’, the new age of a ‘woman in the white house’.
Now that that ‘soap opera’ is over, (pent up unrequited scorn and all), a simple switch of the channel occurs, and a competitor unveils a new show with a “woman with no chip on her shoulder.” How can this be?? No entitlement attitude, no professed destiny, no predictions of inevitability. None of it……
Now the old show is passé, no one cares any longer, and as in Toy Story, a new doll has taken her place. The liberals and MSM were personally vested in Hillary’s candidacy, and then her legacy. Now the other party has committed the ultimate insult……irrelevancy.

AP, does it matter? McCain is our guy, Palin is our gal. We can’t waste our time wondering what could have been. Have you seen the attention span of our country? It can almost be measured in minutes. In two weeks, no one will remember this crap except political junkies like ourselves.
What’s important is to dispell the rumors and get them in front of the uninformed voter, if possible. My wife is sitting at her laptop as we speak reading MSM.com and wondering why McCain didn’t vet Palin properly. There are a lot of Mrs. Magoo’s out there that need to make informed decisions. Fortunately, I have a deal with the Mrs. not to make a decision until we have watched all four debates.
This is where grass roots campaigning kicks in – one vote at a time. If you (the people) are in a situation that’s conducive to talking politics, find out what the people around you think and have an open honest discussion. Look for the undecided voters if you can find them. Use the knowledge you read on Hot Air and elsewhere (places you trust) to bolster your opinions.
And for those thinking of tuning out until November, don’t! Ignore the crap, stick to the facts, and help someone around you make a decision for McCain/Palin.
AP, we need you now more than ever. We need to have that truth told here so we can disseminate it to those willing to listen. You’ve told the truth about The One and we have all learned greatly from it. Alternative media has had a great affect on main stream thinking.
Now let Palin defend herself. It’s time to cowboy the f%$# up!

The thing with the Dems and women is that they want women to be considered as victims who need special treatment. This is their story to attract female voters. Once a woman has risen to power (the presidency being the ultimate position of power) the whole “glass ceiling” etc thing isn’t convincing anymore.
Having barred Hillary from the nomination is a good thing for the Dems in the long run: No female president (not even nominee) means that their famous “glass ceiling” is still intact and women still have to vote for donkeys in order to break it. (Self-sabotage?)
They really have no incentive to actually have a female president, because it would destroy their “women need the dems to fight for their rights” narration.

I am getting mad. Not just upset but mad. I am getting to the point of being mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.
The baseless attacks on Palin is nothing short of scandalous.
that she was an AIP memeber=false
That she is the grandmother of Trig=false
that she used her power to remove her ex borther in law=false
that she was a ron paul supporter=false
that she was a pat buchannh supporter=false
that she tried to eat hansel and greta=false
that she is a bad mother=false
This is a direct attack on every conservative woman that has raised a family and worked a job in the USA. It is like attacking my sister, my mother, my grandmother. I will NOT LET these attacks go unchampioned.
Chivility on the democratic side is dead. I do not believe it is dead on the REp side. The republician male needs to stand up and defend this lady’s honor. America is better than this.

I think Governor Palin can defend herself just fine.
