Andrea Mitchell: Is Palin just too darned popular?

I don’t think that’s what she’s saying, although it is admittedly her comeback to Thune’s point about the base’s enthusiasm. What she means, I take it, is that it’s hard for voters to absorb so many revelations about an unknown candidate all at once, especially in an age of 24-hour cable news where they just keep coming. The effect is cacophonous, to the point where some people might simply throw up their hands, decide it’s not worth trying to parse what’s true, what’s false, and what’s important, and conclude that she’s dubious because, well, the media certainly seems to think she is and they’re a reliable enough proxy. That is to say, this may be a test of whether a wild-card VP selection is feasible in the modern media age. Maybe it isn’t. Maybe you need someone like Biden or Romney, whose weak points have already been vetted and incorporated into their “price” on the political stock market, in order not to be thrown hopelessly off-message and put perpetually on the defensive. Exit question: Would Pawlenty’s “stock” have shown less volatility? Better exit question: Does that matter if his price was lower? Click the image to watch.

Palin’s got shivers running up and down my leg.
m064404 on September 2, 2008 at 5:12 PM
I think Governor Palin can defend herself just fine.
bloggless on September 2, 2008 at 5:08 PM
I think she can too but that is not the point of my post. The media has dragged the good lady’s reputation thru the mud. What if your mother’s reputation was so dragged. Would you sit back and allow you mother to defend herself by herself or would you do everything in your power to help her defend it?

With all this talk about if Sarah Palin has what it takes to be president if something happens to McCain, it should be pointed out how many fellow democrats REJECTED Biden for other candidates during the primaries. Apparently 99% of democrats didn’t think Biden was a good choice for president.
AverageJoe on September 2, 2008 at 5:16 PM
Fred Thompson and Mike huckabee get it they have stasrted the defense. Now the rest of the republicans must rally around her. McCain is doing and honorable job also in his defense. I think he can be stronger. Mrs. Bush made a strong case yesterday.

very good point and the thrust of Huckabee’s defense. I think that is the next line of attack.

The problem is now that the media love Obama and hate Palin.

As a UAW member for 13 years I can tell you one thing that all the union members would complain about come election time. “A real person like us will never get in the Whitehouse.” Of course now that someone just like us is on the Republican ticket she isn’t good enough for them. The hypocrisy from the left is amazing in how obvious it is. The left better get used to Palin, win or lose this year I’m willing to bet she will be a thorn in their side for years to come. She is just the first young conservative to shake things up. To me this is a landmark because it marks a new wave of conservatives.

I dunno if Palin is gonna work out, but in the end I’m not sure that Pawlenty or Romney or “fill-in-the blank” woulda been any different.
I do know that in the hours leading up to the announcement I was not feeling good about Pawlenty. I guess for the “boring white guy” reasons, but also because he’s on board with JMac on cap and trade and thinks we can actually save the earth.
rockhead on September 2, 2008 at 5:36 PM
That comes with the territory. Not only does a candidate run but all this other stuff is part of the nomination including “off limits” discussion of family. Palin had to have been fully aware that Bristol Palin’s out-of-wedlock pregnancy was going to break before November (she’s five months along so holding her baby brother would have only worked a few more times). Simply put, if you are a candidate you have two choices- campaign with an eye toward victory understanding that there are going to be sleazy stories about those closest to you or spend all your campaign time defending your family.

Tell us how you really feel AP and don’t hold back, your opinions are valued for their pragmatism. You are a pragmatist right? I pragmatist would pick ___________ for VP.
Fuquay Steve on September 2, 2008 at 5:39 PM
the right needs to counter attack to show how dereanged the media is. McCain needs to run against the media, and against congress. He needs to attack attack attack. The media is totally in the tank. What is going on with BHO children who is taking care of them with michelle on the trail and working a 300k/year job? Those little kids need their mother. How can michelle possibly be a good mother? And Joe biden he stayed in the Senate and allowed his sons to be brought up by a nanny after his wife died. Why didn’t he quit the senate and stay at home with his children after his wife died. they needed their father more than ever at that point in time.

Of course she knew. In fact she most likely had to get Bristol’s OK before she took the offer:
Lisa Murkowski had to run for re-election to her U.S. Senate seat in her own right during the next general election. Writes Johnson (at pages 88-89; emphasis mine):
In 2004, friends and supporters urged Sarah to challenge Lisa Murkowski. [By then,] Sarah had made a name for herself as a reformer, and supporters thought she had a good chance of winning. So, Sarah approached her family to discuss the possibility. Like all of her decisions, the decision had to be unanimous.
“People don’t believe me, but it’s true. It had to be a family decision,” she said. Todd was up for a move to Washington, D.C. and the girls were on board as well. But son Track, in his early teens, was becoming aware of the contentiousness of a political battle. He valued his privacy, and felt uncomfortable in the limelight. “Track did not want me to run, and he was adamant about it. He had to bless me,” Sarah said. “If he had said at the time ‘This is great,’ I would have done it.”
In 2006, however, Frank Murkowski himself was up for re-election as governor. Continues Johnson (at page 91): “This time, when Sarah talked with her family about running, the decision was a unanimous decision to go for it.”

God bless andrea for being so concerned for the republicans. I guess she really does have America’s best interest at heart, right?
Wrong. mitchell is the American equivalent of the politboro members that drove in limos by lines of people waiting to buy toilet paper and marveled at the equality. The cable networks and powers that be at the dnc are full of them. This is not going to let up. They have Palin in their sites and it’s going to get ugly. The best thing mccain can do is put Palin on the news shows with these lowlifes and let America see through these lowlifes. Her authenticity will shine through on the same set with these foul little creatures.

And I did not say she had to defend her family. I said thye right swhould do the defending for her.
For instance. How do we know Bristol did not use birth control and it failed.
How do we know Bristol and Levi did not plan this child
How do we know the engagement was not before the they got pregent.
How do we know Bristol and Levi where not modern day Romeo and Julet?
We don’t know but we have just allowed the narriative of the Left to take hold that it was an accident because the Lady did not practice birth control. I know many 17 and 18 year olds that are in love and want to get married. Why are we allowing the media to paint this as a mistake, an accident, a failure of Gov Palin? We do not know the story. there could be a great love story behind this marriage and coming birth. Yet we cede the high moral ground to the leftwards and Allah because of why?

I’m waiting for her speech. Palin can close-down quite a few of these liberal smears if she really hits it and connects.
If anything, the media lemmings have probably steered quite a few people toward the speech who might have tuned-in otherwise.
I’m hoping for a righteous smackdown and move on from there.
Bishop on September 2, 2008 at 5:51 PM
“might NOT have tuned-in otherwise…”
Damn these clumsy fingers!
Bishop on September 2, 2008 at 5:52 PM
Ok, no she’s just TOO POPULAR?!?!?
Everytime I think I’ve heard every pathetic excuse why she won’t/can’t/shouldn’t win somebody has to go and say something even more ludicrass.
Obviously this gal was the perfect pick otherwise there wouldn’t be this much negative attention to her from the media.
Browncoatone on September 2, 2008 at 5:53 PM
I agree, but I also remember what happened to John McCain in 2000 with the half-breed love child crapola about the adopted daughter etc. He tried to just ignore it and got chewed up….
funky chicken on September 2, 2008 at 5:57 PM
I’ve watched Andrea Mitchell my whole life (many, many years) Unfortunately, she has traded professional jounalism for money. She will die a sell out. I will not.

Like I think I said here yesterday, the DeMedia Party has to try to destroy Palin quickly, because they know she is a strong communicator, and once she gets past them to connect to the public directly, she will be too powerful. They are sweating bullets, because they sense she could ultimately be the one thing they are pledged to their masters to prevent at all costs – another Reagan.

Hah!
The fact that their number one is having palpitations over our number two is revealing. And their jealousy that comes from Palin carrying a pure American authenticity so effortlessly must be frustrating. Simple reason? No media hype or spin is required when you’re not an empty suit.
Palin/McCain ‘08!
Palin/? ‘12!

Is Andrea Mitchell just too darned dumb to be believed? She’s stupid even for the average newsreaderbabe. Send her back to the farm team stations to do weather or the social calendar.
GeneSmith on September 2, 2008 at 6:26 PM
Let the unhinged lefties, the biased media, the Mortified Kondrackes, the Charles Sourkrauts, George Wills show their true colors!
A hunter finds the game, waits on or flushes the game and when the time is right kills the game.
Sarah and family are hunters of truely big game not the pea brained, quail sized quarry mentioned above.
Happy hunting! The time for the kill is near!
Lunch is being flushed out it just doesn’t know its’ the lunch yet!

Is there anything more depressing than to be an aging lock step feminist liberal shill?
This bitter hag is another reason KP should join our side.
Hello – this is your future calling.
DeweyWins on September 2, 2008 at 6:29 PM
The left is losing and they know it and they are desperate and they know it and they are lashing out and they know it. Shhhhh…
sabbott on September 2, 2008 at 7:04 PM
That’s what I think too! I always think there is desperation in the way they talk… Like they are trying to cover the guilt they feel.
They are trying to get everyone to tell them it was not really a baby but in their heads there is a loop telling them it was a baby, their baby, and they killed it.
And once you have something like that going on in your head how do you deal with others who are surrounded by a loving family. Maybe the kids are the same age yours would have been….
I really feel sorry for these women who were so convinced they were doing something sophisticated and modern…and find their lives empty. And try to force others to validate their decision.

Too popular? This coming from the people who have been treating us to a non-stop orgy of Obama love since he won his first primary. It’s disgusting more than pathetic.

Who cares what elitist spokesholes like Andrea Mitchell says, especially when she is constantly undressing for The Dali Bama?

Too much intensity? You mean like BHO? What a moron.
Go get ‘em Sarah.
Mojave Mark on September 2, 2008 at 8:10 PM
As opposed to the opposite. As opposed to deciding that there must be something to this lady if she’s got the entire media flailing around like this. But of course Mitchell would never say that…

Jim Treacher on September 2, 2008 at 8:53 PM
Agreed, Mitchell cannot have a positive thought about a Republican. She would have to turn in her NBC credentials.
d1carter on September 2, 2008 at 9:03 PM
Can you guys keep a secret? I heard that Andrea Mitchell is secretly supporting Obama. Don’t tell anyone! It’s a secret.
Kevin M on September 2, 2008 at 9:07 PM
Right now I am listening to ABC radio coverage of the convention. It sounds like Radio Obama or Radio Moscow. The entire show is about the Palin kid and how it may just wreck the Palin candidacy. However I heard the baby daddy is on his way to MN and will appear on the stage with the family. Stick that in your ass Andrea Bitchell.
JonRoss on September 2, 2008 at 9:20 PM
You know what I think we’re going to find out this week, after a holiday weekend of drooling idiocy about Sarah Palin? I think the media is going to find out just how much the country hates their guts. Never mind the goofy scenarios about Palin dropping out… the real question is which media figure becomes this year’s Dan Rather, tossed into the compost heap to curry a measure of favor with an electorate that is quickly moving from indifferent to hostile in the way it views its own press. The ice is already beginning to crack.
