We have walked in the Palins’ shoes

Allahpundit has a great thread on the announcement from the Palins that their eldest daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant. Coincidentally, my daughter-in-law is at about the same point in her second pregnancy, and our second granddaughter will join our family at the end of the year. When our first granddaughter, the Little Admiral, joined us, it was in a similar situation that Bristol and her fiancé now face.
First, this is not some catastrophe, although it is hardly an optimal situation. As Harold Ramis remarked in Knocked Up, a hurricane is a catastrophe — which we can easily see today. A baby is new life, an addition to the family, and most people would welcome this. And many can never experience that joy, either. It is a blessing, as long as people don’t treat it like a catastrophe.
Our son and daughter-in-law had just started their senior year in high school when they became pregnant, and I use that pronoun deliberately. The two of them formed their own unit and held each other up during a terribly stressful year. Meanwhile, we parents had to support them as best we could, and make sure they knew we loved and supported them through it all. In return, we discovered two wonderful adults who had just been children shortly before, and when the Little Admiral came, two wonderful parents as well.
None of this was easy, and we certainly all had our moments during this stressful time. However, we took each day as it came, and we discovered that it really didn’t bring the world to an end or stop the two of them from pursuing their dreams Like Bristol, our son and daughter-in-law got engaged shortly afterwards, and this month celebrated six years of marriage. Both of them graduated from college this year, and my son will start graduate school this week. It took them a little longer, but they achieved their goals.
What does this mean politically? I think AP has done a good job in addressing this, but really I don’t think politics will enter into it. The Palins all chose life and lived their values. That doesn’t strike me as news, as we already saw that with her commitment to her son Trig. The Democrats won’t dare mention this as a campaign issue, and even the blogs will probably leave it alone soon enough. Most people, I’d say, will wish Bristol and the Palins well. None of us quit our jobs to help our son and daughter-in-law cope, and neither will Sarah Palin, because it’s unnecessary.
We would all do better just to admire the Palins for their love and support for Bristol, Bristol’s courage in pursuing motherhood when faced with a difficult but hardly unusual situation, and agree that this has little to do with whether Sarah Palin will make a good Vice President. Families have been dealing with this since … there were families. Neither side should use Bristol to score political points. Keeping them in our prayers would also be the kindest action we can take.
Update: Here are my two posts on the graduations of my son and daughter-in-law. Also, if we called the first granddaughter the Little Admiral, what should we call our second?

It just really struck me as to WHY I like Palin….
She really is one of US. Not the smarmy proffesional politician who potrays themselves with the perfect life, and perfect family (cracks me up that Barry won’t get his kids a dog until after the election…)…
She muddles through a non perfect life just like the rest of us, doing the best she can while staying true to her beliefs.
Husband got a DUI? Heck, I can relate… learn and move on…
Kids making mistakes? it happens… its life…. Forgive and move on… and don’t punish the child…
Change yer mind on somthing? Fine, explain why and move on… I change my mind on stuff all the time…
Key is that she’s been out living in the REAL WORLD, not the fake fantasy we call Washington… or even worse, Chicago Political circles.

What I’m saying is that because Palin is an awkward situation at the moment, she should not have accepted the VP nomination. She should have refused and allowed McCain to pick someone who is not in an awkward situation and can best campaign for and with him and possibly serve as VP without such distractions.
Now maybe Palin is qualified for VP, but if she has one surprise, could there be another and another?

Cap’n Ed,
When I saw a comment from someone in AP’s post stating that Bristol is having a “bastard child”, I was incensed. Those people accuse us of being “judgmental”, yet they have zero trouble acting like our judges, juries and executioners against us if or when we fall, like we all do in life.
As I said before, my in-laws were barely out of high school when they found out they were going to be parents. Since they lived – and still do – in the New Haven area, they could have made a trip to the local
glue factoryPlanned Parenthood clinic and ended it all there. Instead, they went to a church and exchanged vows “for better or worse”, in the presence of their families. Seven months later, their only child was born.My in-laws will celebrate their fortieth wedding anniversary this month. My husband will turn forty next year. And of course, my in-laws will be grandparents a second time.
I wonder what their lives would have been like if they had decided to “end it” at the glue factory. I would, in all possibility, have not met a well-grounded, well-educated and respected graduating midshipman from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy years later. He wouldn’t have been the father of my children.
So, that’s why we love you, Ed. You know, as I and my husband do, that things happen for a reason – and a Divine reason at that.
And to those who insist on “Perfection”, my message is the same: “Must be lonely at the top, Perfect ones. Here, have a couple of blankets. It gets cold up there, especially when you are too perfect to accept human warmth.”
newton on September 1, 2008 at 3:30 PM
Yeah, but everybody involved had to know it was going to come out eventually. And they’ve come clean about it, a mere four days after Palin was introduced to the country. (Compare and contrast this with John Edwards, who still hasn’t admitted he’s a new daddy.) It can’t be fun, but these seem like pretty tough, grounded people. I’m rooting for them, but somehow I don’t think they need it.
Jim Treacher on September 1, 2008 at 3:30 PM
It’s a lame reference to Harriet Miers, Bush’s nom for the SCOTUS who turned out to be a rather poor choice, and who was replaced by Alito after her nomination was withdrawn.
It’s also further proof of just how clueless and stupid our ralphie really is.

barry norris on September 1, 2008 at 3:36 PM
Liberals never seem to understand how conservatives can advocate an ideal path, and yet still support people who fail to live that ideal. Liberals condemn them as hypocrites. They also get very angry because they claim conservatives condemn them when they fail to live up to an ideal.
So let me see if I can’t explain to our common sense challenged brothers:
There is an ideal moral path. People who live the ideal path are to be commended and admired.
Most of us however, make mistakes, and fail to follow the ideal path. Those who take responsibility for there mistakes, and make the best effort they can to make the best of the new situation, and bring it as close to the ideal path as possible are also to be admired and commended. Doing so is not easy. It is definitely not hypocrisy. As they expect the same moral standards from themselves as they do from others.
Why then are liberals condemned for failing to follow the ideal path? Because their response to leaving the ideal moral path is to ridicule it. Often even ridiculing the very idea of a moral ideal path, they proclaim the relativity of morality. Instead of expecting themselves or others to take responsibility for their mistakes, they deny that they have made a mistake and seek to evade all responsibility. Men flee their responsibility as fathers and expect women to handle it on their own. Women are encouraged to also flee their responsibility by murdering their unborn child- which is dismissed as “a lump of cells” or viewed as a punishment.
Is it any surprise that such a moral view is condemned by conservatives?
Hypocrites are then those who demand that others live up to morals that they do not hold themselves too.
Liberals try to call us hypocrites based on the supposed inconsistency between out ideals and our actual behavior. “You are a hypocrite,” they say, “because you call me a sinner, when you are also a sinner.” This confuses conservative religious folk, since we assume that all of us are sinners. That’s sort of a given. The liberals then never understand why their attacks in this vein fail to stir any anger, and they then accuse us of “moral dissonance”, or more commonly just call us stupid.
We conservatives in turn view them as the hypocrites, because they try to hold conservatives to a moral standard that they reject for themselves. “You are the hypocrite,” we say, “because you call us sinners, for things that you deny are sins when you do them.”
Sackett on September 1, 2008 at 3:36 PM
“Little General” doesn’t fit with the nautical theme of the now deceased Captain’s Quarters.
How about “Little Captain” in keeping with the fact that, like a Navy admiral would do to a Navy captain, the Little Admiral is going to try and lord it over the new arrival.
Or you could just call the baby “matey”.
Bishop on September 1, 2008 at 3:36 PM
Well, my mother was 5 months pregnant with me when she married my father, who was in the Navy at the time and I grew up to go on to do wonderful things in this world and frankly touched the lives of many, many people who needed to be touched and would not have had my touch if my mother had not made the choice to give me life .. ;)

They are still married and my firstborn grandson Ethan is 9 yrs. old and his baby brother is two. My daughter-in-law is a registered nurse and my son is now in the nursing program to become one as well.

However, his belief in Marxist-inspired “solutions” are the real problem I have with him. Obama seems to forget that, based upon events of the most recent thirty or forty years, applied Marxism doesn’t work. Otherwise, people would be running in droves to Cuba or North Korea.

Your logic makes no sense. If the problem is that Sarah Palin’s 17 year old daughter got pregnant, that is not going to change. If Palin waited 4 years to run for office she would still be a woman whose 17 year old daughter got pregnant. What does that have to do with her love of country. Her son is being deployed to Iraq in a few weeks. Maybe that balances things out in the bad mother/good mother department.

But, to play along with you fetus-lovers out there, he should instead send a card that reads, “I’m sorry you have to surrender the best years of your life so that you can become a mommy before your even old enough to know what you want in life.” You funny little fetus-freaks only worship the lives of those that are susceptible to your indoctrination. “Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; they will not be ashamed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.” ~Psalm 127:3-5
We frequently remind ourselves of this verse during times like this. I wonder though, why don’t we read other verses like these?
“Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.” Song of Solomon 8:4 (it only had to be said three times in this book)
“A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish son is a grief to his mother.” ~Proverbs 10:1
“A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish man despises his mother.” ~Proverbs 15:20
“He who sires a fool does so to his sorrow, and the father of a fool has no joy.” ~Proverbs 17:21
“A foolish son is a grief to his father and bitterness to her who bore him.” ~Proverbs 17:25
“Discipline your son while there is hope, and do not desire his death.” ~Proverbs 19:18
A child is a blessing only if the parents use their home to raise and train their sons to be godly Men and daughters to be godly Women. Otherwise, they grow up to be little hellions, to the dismay and bafflement of many. As for me, as a warrior, I don’t want a quiver of crooked arrows.

The fact that Obama has a foreign sounding name and a Kenyan father and was conceived out of wedlock and is African American has not hurt him has it? In fact, if anything, it has added to appeal with a lot of voters. He is both familiar and exotic. He is an example of how anyone can rise to great heights in this country.
I think Palin as the same appeal to many people, but for different reasons. So….when she faces real life problems and challenges she seems more real to people. Her appeal as an Alaskan is almost like that of the frontier or pioneer woman. I think that maybe McCain knew this and that is why he offered her the VP slot.

The left is enraged because they can sense that Sarah Palin threatens their candidate’s chances.
She is smart, articulate, clean (sorry; couldn’t help myself!), fights corruption in her own party – and lives her life according to her convictions. They see how people are responding to Palin – and they’re scared.
Instead of sticking to issues and argumentation, however, they are throwing whatever kind of garbage they can at her, hoping that some of it will stick.
I would imagine that some will damage Palin, and in turn, McCain. I hope, however, that ultimately the public will see these efforts for what they are. Then, perhaps some of the venom and ugliness will blow back on the senders instead.
I don’t agree with all the views of McCain and Palin. But, I am happy to be supporting two candidates who try their hardest to do what they think is best for their communities and our country.
