We have walked in the Palins’ shoes

Allahpundit has a great thread on the announcement from the Palins that their eldest daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant.  Coincidentally, my daughter-in-law is at about the same point in her second pregnancy, and our second granddaughter will join our family at the end of the year.  When our first granddaughter, the Little Admiral, joined us, it was in a similar situation that Bristol and her fiancé now face.

First, this is not some catastrophe, although it is hardly an optimal situation.  As Harold Ramis remarked in Knocked Up, a hurricane is a catastrophe — which we can easily see today.  A baby is new life, an addition to the family, and most people would welcome this.  And many can never experience that joy, either.  It is a blessing, as long as people don’t treat it like a catastrophe.

Our son and daughter-in-law had just started their senior year in high school when they became pregnant, and  I use that pronoun deliberately.  The two of them formed their own unit and held each other up during a terribly stressful year.  Meanwhile, we parents had to support them as best we could, and make sure they knew we loved and supported them through it all.  In return, we discovered two wonderful adults who had just been children shortly before, and when the Little Admiral came, two wonderful parents as well.

None of this was easy, and we certainly all had our moments during this stressful time.  However, we took each day as it came, and we discovered that it really didn’t bring the world to an end or stop the two of them from pursuing their dreams  Like Bristol, our son and daughter-in-law got engaged shortly afterwards, and this month celebrated six years of marriage.  Both of them graduated from college this year, and my son will start graduate school this week.  It took them a little longer, but they achieved their goals.

What does this mean politically?  I think AP has done a good job in addressing this, but really I don’t think politics will enter into it.  The Palins all chose life and lived their values.  That doesn’t strike me as news, as we already saw that with her commitment to her son Trig.  The Democrats won’t dare mention this as a campaign issue, and even the blogs will probably leave it alone soon enough.  Most people, I’d say, will wish Bristol and the Palins well.  None of us quit our jobs to help our son and daughter-in-law cope, and neither will Sarah Palin, because it’s unnecessary.

We would all do better just to admire the Palins for their love and support for Bristol, Bristol’s courage in pursuing motherhood when faced with a difficult but hardly unusual situation, and agree that this has little to do with whether Sarah Palin will make a good Vice President.  Families have been dealing with this since … there were families.  Neither side should use Bristol to score political points.  Keeping them in our prayers would also be the kindest action we can take.

Update: Here are my two posts on the graduations of my son and daughter-in-law.  Also, if we called the first granddaughter the Little Admiral, what should we call our second?

Good post Ed. Now everyone needs to take a “chill pill” and just relax already. No suggestions on the name, sorry.

In ‘04, Kerry tried to make an issue of Cheney’s daughter, which ultimately failed to bear fruit. I foresee the same outcome here unless there is more to the story.

Nice for them…

But Harriet Palin wants to deny every other family in America the option to choose like they did.

Tony737 on September 1, 2008 at 2:59 PM

God bless you. That was a great post. This is becoming common. And we should look at the baby as a blessing. People have differences and we should not interfere in this matter especially politically.

jencab on September 1, 2008 at 2:59 PM

Call her the Commadore. Or however that’s spelled.

My daughter taught me personal responsibility when I became pregnant with her out of wedlock at age 19. It was the best and most important lesson of my life. She starts kindergarten tomorrow, and never have I been so sure that I made the right decision to finish that pregnancy (and not give her up for adoption).

I remember you writing about your son and daughter-in-law… it made me cry good tears. I’m happy for your family, for Bristol and her family (and her future husband and his as well), and for everybody who’s ever been faced with this decision and chose life.

Xolom on September 1, 2008 at 3:01 PM

From Susan Reimer at the Baltimore Sun:

Sarah Palin is a woman who “… made the decision to carry to term a baby she knew to be developmentally disabled.” And she didn’t mean this as a compliment!

Tony737 on September 1, 2008 at 3:01 PM

Palins’ are US! Let’s take this to the White House!!!

gracie on September 1, 2008 at 3:01 PM

You raise your kids the best you can and pray hard. My wife and I will frequently turn to each other and say, “What’d we do right?” Young Miss Palin is hardly the first woman to find herself in this situation, and you KNOW she won’t be the last.

Given the Liberal urge to encourage sex from four years old on, I fail to see where the left has any room to mention this, but you know they will. As jgapinoy wrote, “God bless you all…”

PS “…what should we call our second?”
How about “The Little General”?

oldleprechaun on September 1, 2008 at 3:02 PM

Much admiration for you and your family Ed. Much agreement with your post.

dedalus on September 1, 2008 at 3:02 PM

What the left doesn’t understand is the scandals would have been either if Bristol had been pregnant and aborted the child or if McCain wasn’t told about the pregnancy during vetting. The first didn’t happen and the second apparently didn’t, either, so how the public feels about Palin will again boil down to how she introduces herself at the convention and how she handles hostile questioning from the big media and Joe Biden at next month’s debate.

jon1979 on September 1, 2008 at 3:02 PM

Thanks for the post, Ed. I knew you’d be able to chime in with a perspective most of us don’t have.

theguardianii on September 1, 2008 at 3:02 PM

God Bless You and Yours, Ed!!!

And THANK YOU for puttin’ this in the proper prospective.

The media that is targeted at our children today encourages them to behave like adults in the bedroom but often does not encourage such adult behavior when a new life is the result.

Both your son and his family, and Bristol and her fiance are showing remarkable strength, courage, commitment, and maturity in their handling of one on life’s greatest blessings.

Best wishes to them all.

ExTex on September 1, 2008 at 3:02 PM

Dr. James C. Dobson: “In the 32-year history of Focus on the Family, we have offered prayer, counseling and resource assistance to tens of thousands of parents and children in the same situation the Palins are now facing.

We have always encouraged the parents to love and support their children and always advised the girls to see their pregnancies through, even though there will of course be challenges along the way. That is what the Palins are doing, and they should be commended once again for not just talking about their pro-life and pro-family values, but living them out even in the midst of trying circumstances.

Bishop on September 1, 2008 at 3:03 PM

Fantastic post!

I am amazed at all the tongue-cluckers whose posts I’m reading on the blogs and forums which I visit. This says nothing at all about Gov. Palin’s fitness for VP. What it does say is that the Palin family is like many American families who have had to deal with this situation – mine included – and are handling a difficult situation very well.

Barack Obama has a nut for a wife, a nut for a spiritual advisor, and a nut for a friend.

Maybe we should just eliminate the middleman and say it: Judging by the company he keeps, Barack Obama is probably a nut.

Barack Obama was conceived out of wedlock by a multiple bigamist.

Barack Obama was a cokehead.

If Barack Obama’s Veep ever caught himself telling the truth, he’d tell a lie just to keep his streak alive.

Just to put the Bristol Palin’s pregnancy in context…..

My husband and I each have a sister who got pregnant in her teens, married the father, and had the baby. Unfortunately, it did not work out for either sister in the long run — both ended up divorced. One is a single mother struggling in the dating world, and the other remarried many years after leaving her children with their father, who was better able to provide for them. But they both chose life, which is in my opinion better than the alternative. They tried to make solid families and failed, which is better than not trying at all.

This is why my disapproval of teen pregnancy is more intellectual than moral at this stage of my life. Statistically, more of these young marriages based on a surprise pregnancy end in divorce than not. It is a poor choice to make. But once it’s made, the path Ed’s family took and the Palins are taking is the only logical and moral one to follow in my view. It takes extremely hard work and commitment on the part of the young parents, but it is better to try to do it right than to just kill the baby to avoid the challenge of taking responsibility for one’s actions.

It’s obvious that the Palin platform is diametrically opposed to Obama’s. They will never say that their daughter is “being punished with a child”. How can the miracle of Life be a punishment? I hope that this issue is hammered until they put their hands over their ears and cry: ‘UNCLE!’
Prayers are on their way.

Christine on September 1, 2008 at 3:05 PM

First, just wanted to say “congratulations to Uncle Trig!”

Secondly, for those who think that Sarah’s and Bristol’s respective situations should disqualify Sarah from becoming VP, what if it were Todd running for the VP slot? Why would he be any less disqualified? What does that say for “progressivism”?

barry norris on September 1, 2008 at 3:06 PM

The liberals will never understand that the opposition to Abortion by Conservatives has less to do with the words in an old book, and more to do with the respect and love of life, all life. All things living is a miracle, and when we eat, be it a salad or a steak, we respect that life that food represents, and we respect the life it gives. God’s plan may not be perfectly clear to us, however his intent generally is obvious. Life is good, and life is to be respected. That is why I agreed with those who tried to save Terry Schiavo. When there is a reasonable doubt, choose life over death.

Before you ask, I’m not opposed to the death penalty, but I prefer life without the possibility of parole. A person on death row get’s automatic appeals. A person stuck into a hole and forgotten for the rest of their life doesn’t. That removes the hope, and that is the cruelest punishment I can imagine, how about you?

It was hard for someone to tell another person – who is giving them an opportunity of a lifetime – that a child is pregnant. Therein is the measure of Mrs Palin, mom, leader.

But for a man to accept that news and take on the burden with the family as they go into the glare of public introspect is old school Americana.

We were given a lesson here in why this country will allways persevere – we have a politician who risks losing everything he worked for, to stand with a 16 year old child he never met before -

John Wayne McCain

Great post Ed. Great personal story. It how we handle the issues that face us in life that define who we are.

It’s funny how this all worked out. This story won’t get the play it would have if it hadn’t been for this hurricane. McCain looks like a leader for scaling back the RNC and using it to help hurrican victims. Bush and Cheney won’t be speaking at the convention now which saves the left’s running of the mouth commentary on them.

I feel like this election is teaching us a dozen different things about race, civility, leadership, and what it means to be a family.

Rightwingsparkle on September 1, 2008 at 3:22 PM

Ed, a couple of things.

As far as nicknames go, I suppose “The Commodore” might be appropriate. Either that, or consider the pattern of the Royal Navy of Nelson’s day, which differentiated admirals based on seniority via the color of their Flag — Admiral of the Blue, Admiral of the Red, etc.

I’d also like to thank you for what you have written here because it moved me to the point of tears. There are two reasons.

First, because of your nod to those, like my wife and I, who will never have the joyful experience of having a child of our own. We who have found ourselves faced with miscarriages and infertility know that the birth of a baby in not a tragedy, but is instead a cause for joy.

Second, because seventy-five years ago this past May, a young couple got married in their parish church in Rhode Island under similar circumstances. My mother, who will celebrate her 75th birthday next month, was born five months later. I thank God daily that all this happened four decades before Roe v. Wade.

I said we shouldn’t dig in on the Trig’s mother story because it may have been the case of a too-young daughter being rescued by a selfless mother.

I owe Bristol Palin an apology, and I apologize too her. Of course you are not of the age anyone would choose to become a mother, and I certainly promote adoption for those without the strength to raise a child, but by your decision you are showing yourself stronger in character than most of the people you will ever meet.

I owe Sarah Palin an apology, and give one. I thought you might have used defensible subterfuge to protect Bristol and Trig and give each a better life. We the public don’t deserve to know some things about your private lives. But you have been the best of mothers without lying even to those who have no right to the details.

I continue to look forward to the Palin Vice-Presidency. And beyond.

But why should I expect reason out of the left ? This is the same group of people that attacked Barry at one time for “not being black enough”

Wow, Eliz.

Using that poor baby’s birth defect to score political points?

alphie on September 1, 2008 at 3:22 PM

No, actually, she was using *your* birth defect to score political points.

Trig’s just happens to be chromosomal, and out of his control; what’s your excuse?

Call her the Commadore. Or however that’s spelled.

I second that nomination.

Folks, I am in tears over this. Can you imagine the embarrassment this poor girl feels? She is going through a tough time (I’ve been there) and the mainstream media is all over this. This is so unfair to her (and her family).

On a related note, why is the left so totally unhinged over Sarah Palin’s candidacy? I’ve been to the Wash Post and the Fox News post on this story and there’s 30 pages of vitriol aimed at this family and conservatives in general. What in the world is going on?

We need to keep this family in our prayers, because they are gonna need them.
