Video: So, how’s the news about Palin’s daughter playing at the convention?

posted at 5:20 pm on September 1, 2008 by Allahpundit

Newsday columnist and possible amateur Scalia impersonator Larry Levy weighs in. Just one man’s observation, but it’s precisely what I’d expect given the palpable jolt of enthusiasm she’s thrown into the GOP and grassroots conservatives. As for his take on how working-class women might react, Althouse made a similar point about judgmentalism earlier. Let’s hope they’re right. The clip’s short but very savvy. Click the image to watch.

Update: The media’s dying for this unconventional pick to explode in McCain’s face. They can taste it: “I covered the Dan Quayle campaign. Is there no sense of panic over the love child issue or is there a belief that it shows that she is like a lot of American families?”

Update: I linked this in the last thread but it works here too. Fred Thompson today in Minneapolis:

Pushed by NEWSWEEK’s reporters and editors to say whether having a pregnant teenage daughter and five-month-old baby with Down syndrome at home will raise questions about Palin’s “priorities,” Thompson responded by questioning the questioners. “Would you be saying that about man running for office in her shoes?” he asked. “I really think you’re going to be surprised at how average people and women who are not necessarily political one way or another identify with her. I see nothing in this that will hurt Sarah Palin politically. I mean, I get that it’s a necessary part of the process to ask those questions. But we have to keep it fair. If we don’t keep it fair, it will redound to her benefit.” Judging by the reaction in the room–“I look around this table all these angry men, and I can’t believe they’re even asking this question,” quipped one female NEWSWEEKer–I have a feeling he’s right. Saying a woman can’t pursue her professional goals AND care for her children at the same time is never a political winner–whether it’s conservatives or liberals wagging their fingers.

Where do you get the talking dogs? Mine can drag his rear across the living room carpet and roll in dead fish, but that’s about it.

I should have been more sensitive and described those individuals as lower income whites who appreciate a trailer based lifestyle.
bayam on September 1, 2008 at 5:47 PM

And I’d describe you as an uncaring pimple on the butt of humanity, if I was doing the describing. Fortunately for me, you’ve already described yourself as a bayamo, or a big wind.

Go blow.

Tennman on September 1, 2008 at 6:15 PM

When my gradparents got older they bought themselves a nice little trailer. Grandma planted flower all around it and fruit trees in her yard. She had a big garden and storm cellar. She and my Grandfather survived the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, the death of their only son and they never asked anyone for anything. I really resent the trailer trash nonsense. Believe it or not, people living in trailers are human beings.

Terrye on September 1, 2008 at 6:16 PM

I’m not a Republican elitist and don’t believe that the wealthy represent a special class that should be given massive tax breaks when the only result is making the rich richer. The collapse of the real estate market has made it clear that there hasn’t been any kind of miracle behind the economy. The only outcome is a massive deficit and greater dependency on our lenders in China and the Middle East. So don’t accuse me of voting for policies that give Bush’s country club friends a free tax ride.

The real issue, from what I recall during Clinton’s tenure- is whether Palin represents good values and character.

bayam on September 1, 2008 at 6:04 PM

I’m certainly pleased that you are not a Republican and it’s blatantly obvious that you are not an economist. Neither are you one that understands the contemporary meaning of social morality. To defend the immoral actions of Clinton and condemn the innocent acts of a child, reveals either a warped sense of reason or utter stupidity.

rplat on September 1, 2008 at 6:17 PM

The story seems to be dissipating. Deservedly so, as it is a non-story.

Besides, does Bristol Palin’s mistake have ANY impact on my life, the national security of the USA, taxes, the environment, Social Security?

That is the test of this. Show’s over folks. Too bad the MSM and nutroots will not let go, but that may turn out to bite them in the ass as Sarah and family gain sympathy.

Allahpundit on September 1, 2008 at 6:10 PM

I’m not one to argue with for it’s own sake, but I will point out we haven’t even had ONE scandal yet. A teen pregnancy isn’t a scandal, it wasn’t hide or anything. Just is. And the Bridge to Nowhere isn’t a scandal, it’s even been broken down already by Flopping Aces.

My point is that we don’t scandal. We just have fear of a scandal. So far, we are just learning all the extras about her.

Spirit of 1776 on September 1, 2008 at 6:18 PM

Hey MSM, get this. We don’t care about her daughter’s pregnancy, other than we are happy that Sarah will get a new Grandbaby. All this does is endear her to us even more. She is just like us! We ain’t our father’s conservatives.

Bishop on September 1, 2008 at 6:10 PM

My mistake. The situation in this country has never been better. A growing deficit is a non-issue, no impact on our ability to pay future social security and medicare outlays- and the falling standard of living among the middle class is also a joke. You’re right, why mention these things. Complete non-issues.

By the way, what makes you think I have a problem with the rich? I simply believe in Gates or Warren Buffet on this issue- you have to collect adequate taxes from the rich in order to balance the budget.

Warren Buffet isn’t an economist, so if I quote his thoughts on Bush’s economic polices they must be wrong.

However, I think that Alan Greenspan might have managed to get a degree in economics, and his opposition to Bush’s tax policies are very clear.

So I’m not sure I understand your point.

The Democrats have doubled the deficit since they took control of the Congress. Oil and gas went up and so did the unemployment rate. So go lecture them.

Warren Buffet is a billionare bayam, he is the rich, the elite, one of the people amassing obscene amount of wealth. Just like Al Gore, George Soros, Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, not to mention half of Hollywood. Who do you think you are fooling with this crap?

Terrye on September 1, 2008 at 6:24 PM

It’s a good turn of events. It helps McCain appeal to the white trash voting block. Once again you can see why Palin is a brilliant pick politically.

bayam on September 1, 2008 at 5:35 PM

Interesting. Since by most people’s definition the term White Trash is applied to racist morons who detest education and believe that God want’s them to be in charge of minorities. Most people don’t apply White Trash to Union households which have more than one child.

Nor do most people consider religious households which consider life to be precious and respect all life to be the bastion of white trash. In fact, the Democrats usually consider such households which contain a union member to be a core voting block. The large ethnic families of the North East, which is the stomping grounds of Ted Kennedy, come easily to mind.

Yet, it’s interesting that the Liberals continue to demean people by insulting whole groups of people. Calling people trailer trash, white trash, and isn’t it the Liberals who decided that Black people should be called African-American, using the Hyphen the way that it’s intended in language means either putting words together that don’t belong, like Psudo-Mature. The other possible use is to make it a qualified position, like Vice-President. It’s not the important one, American, they’re African-American.

Conservatives only see the American, we don’t care about the color. Which is why Michael Steel, Clarance Thomas, Roberto Gonzalez, and Condi Rice were all Conservatives, who were attacked on racial grounds by Liberals no less.

I guess that’s why I’m not angry about it. I’ve learned to expect it from Liberals. I wonder how long before we hear that there is no chance of a Woman ever being able to handle the stresses of the Executive Branch as well as a man. Probably it won’t be too long, because no other argument against Palin has gained any traction.

Snake307 on September 1, 2008 at 6:26 PM

I simply believe in Gates or Warren Buffet on this issue- you have to collect adequate taxes from the rich in order to balance the budget.
bayam on September 1, 2008 at 6:19 PM

A few things wrong with this economic theory.

1) Both these men already have fortunes tucked away in the bank. Do you think they would volunteer to have that money retroactively taxed at a higher rate? Me neither. Easy to volunteer for higher taxes when you have billions stashed away.

2) Buffet is busy buying failing companies at pennies on the dollar and liquidating them for a tidy profit. If he were so concerned about his fellow man he would bail them out and keep their employees working.

3) It’s the word “adequate” which never seems to get quantified by those who want to raise taxes, it’s also the reason I don’t trust people like you to make tax decisions.

Bishop on September 1, 2008 at 6:27 PM

bayam:

From what I have seen thus far I would have to say Palin represents better character and judgment than you do.

Terrye on September 1, 2008 at 6:27 PM

Bishop on September 1, 2008 at 6:28 PM

FiveWays on September 1, 2008 at 6:29 PM

The only one I’ve seen BigS talk about in the past is troopergate. That one has potential, depending on the results of the investigation.

Considering how anti-Palin he’s been, though, I’m not inclined to believe his predictions unless he’s willing to get specific.

Slublog on September 1, 2008 at 6:34 PM

I’m not one to argue with for it’s own sake, but I will point out we haven’t even had ONE scandal yet.

Exactly. What we have so far, and can expect much more of, is the kind of chatter and sniping that any political leader in any democracy will be subjected to. You think Tim Pawlenty doesn’t have his detractors? Doesn’t have whole armies of opponents and stooges who were ready to twist and turn any given accomplishment, stance, or statement, or drag one, two, three, or many personal connections through the mud? You think there was anything used against Mitt Romney in the primaries that wouldn’t have been revived and amplified – alongside the classist attacks and a number of other arguments that no one bothered to make much of or try to render as “scandals.” Even that damn dog on the roof would certainly have made a re-appearance… probably in YouTube form with a “Who let the dogs out?” mash-up.

There will be rumor-mongering about Todd Palin – lots of it. Big S will likely believe every word of it. Every unsavory character ever within 5 feet of Sarah Palin will be turned into a lifelong friend and the secret sponsor of her political career. And Big S will believe every word of it.

You know what – some part of it may even be true, and a slightly larger part of it might even be believed by people other than Big S – and very likely none of it will matter at all if she comes across well this week, on the stump, in a few interviews, in the VP debate, and doesn’t make a huge jaw-dropping error.

Dude, believe me, I treasure the few Palin-skeptic commenters we have; you’re my only allies left. But you’re bringing even me down with the relentless naysaying.

Your dual pessimism refrain only has legs within your little parallel universes, in that, you truly don’t comprehend why and how the libtards have had an (apparent) abortion debate strangle hold in the elections… except for when Ronald Reagan won in a landslide…

[thinking to self] Let me see.. how do I explain this to little children….

You see the majority of Americans really don’t believe – in private at least – that abortion is morally right (anymore).

But, there have been other extenuating circumstances in the elections we lost, since Reagan, ie… a) Ross Perot, b) republican scandals in 2006, and the list goes on and on when considering the issue debates/votes we have lost.

So your prism of view is skewed because you truly don’t comprehend the issues from their true nature, as they happened.

Your view, is from the most possible negative view one can look at life in general.

You don’t see through the prism of the possible, as based on the truth of previous events.

Let me make an educated guess… you hate playing any game that involves risk….. Dot. Bingo!

So you, would never, ever, thrive in politics, and… the thought of it makes you shake in your shoes.

So that makes me wonder… why should you be pontificating on politics? Or, why should we believe anything or even ponder anything you say?

You see, we true optimistic conservatives are not brainwashed or wishy washy. Our optimism is based on real world issues and seeing them as they really are, not as the screwball MSM pedals it out.

We don’t believe the MSM. We turn them off!!! Why the hell do you think they are bleeding listeners?

Now here’s is a test for you, Allah and Big S… let’s see if you can come up with a great question or a good response that is not pessimistic…
…fair?

but if not, please have some 100 proof gin on me…

Hold on, Republicans are allowed to proclaim Clinton unfit to hold office because the behavior of our executives sets an example for the rest of the country… but Palin gets a free ticket?

OK, let’s compare the actions of a sitting POTUS to an 17 year old…

Clinton did something he shouldn’t have done and instead of taking responsibility for his actions, denied any wrongdoing, attacked his accusers and lied under oath.

Contrast that to 17 year old Miss Palin, who is taking full responsibility for her actions and not trying to blame others or take the easy way out.

As a Christian, I was taught that we all make mistakes -we are all sinners. What sets us apart is what we do after we make a mistake. Those with the strength of character and conviction take responsibility for their actions. Those without try anything they can to avoid taking responsibility.

I’m afraid that you may be right about Obama’s higher taxes on the rich not offsetting his spending priorities. Neither candidate has a credible plan to move this country in the right direction economically. McCain not only wants to keep the current capital gains tax rates in place, but give corporations a lower tax rate. It’s hard to see how this country will be ready to deal with our massive obligations to an aging population.

As for Obama taking money out of the economy, it’s interesting that the venture capital community is firmly in the Obama camp. Those guys clearly don’t see Obama as hurting the formation and growth of new companies in the US.

The middle class is where the money is. Raising taxes on the “rich” will balance nothing. It’s just class warfare.

From a bunch of guys who have covered their asses so they don’t have to pay the taxes that they pretend to support.

lorien1973 on September 1, 2008 at 6:48 PM

Brilliant! This campaign was going to be all very polite and keep the “mud” out of it. McCain’s people prove yet again to be thinking light years ahead of the Obama camp. They had to know since the Palin’s obviously had to know…. it is an “open secret” according to residents of Wasilla.

Now, the left will push this hard and guess what. Open season on Rezko, Chicaco machine, Ayers, Michelle and who knows what else they have in their “research pile”. Both what they found and what Hillary’s people have given them.

Let’s see… his wife’s income was increased to $360K after he was elected to the Senate and “earmarked” a cool million for her hospital and his Senate income is around $180K… they made over $4 million last year? I see… $360K plus $180K = $4,000,000.

When open political warfare begins this week or next, it will be very interesting.

BTW: People that toss around the term “trailer trash” are, wouthout doubt, racist as well. Why? Well, when someone has such a deep seated need to have some basis on which they believe themselves better than others, they will latch on to perceived difference. Race, religion, socio-economic…. you pick it.

The Troopergate thing is getting a bit warmer too. Palin and her associates are backing away pretty fast – they’re lawyering up after Palin’s own parallel investigation (via her attorney General’s office) dug up some dirt that pretty much implicates her office (if not her directly) in the whole thing.

Big S on September 1, 2008 at 6:49 PM

Bayam, one thing you libs never seem to understand is that raising taxes never increases the amount of money in the public coffers for more than one year. It has such a negative effect on the economy that the net gains are erased. On the other hand tax cuts always have the long term effect of an increased take for the government. While at the same time growing the economy. Your old hero JFK understood this and the continued push from the left to raise taxes has nothing to do with helping the defict or the economy, they have to do with class warfare and getting votes

conservnut on September 1, 2008 at 6:49 PM

The Buchanan thing has not been “debunked” – the man himself considered her a part of his “Brigades”. There’s a bit of a Ron Paul Problem, and a bit of a Dexter Clark problem too – and that’s just the start of it.

She was a Forbes supporter, not Buchanan. She’s not going to have a problem with the Jewish community, a rabbi there even came out specifically to give her a non-endorsement shout-out.

And the whole friggin’ country has a bit of a Ron Paul problem, so can you be more specific? If Ronnie isn’t tainted by taking a picture with RP, I’m not sure why people are going to freak out if their names appear together in a paragraph. Unless she was on AJ’s show with RP…

Spirit of 1776 on September 1, 2008 at 6:50 PM

bayam:

You are a hypocrite. Prattling about your noble desire to pay more taxes to help the children etc while you practice class warfare with your white trash comments.

April 2006 saw the biggest pay day in history for the IRS. The deficit was declining. Then the Democrats and won everything went the other way. When they can practice what they preach they can lecture the rest of us. Thus far they have been an abject failure.

Terrye on September 1, 2008 at 6:50 PM

It’s a good turn of events. It helps McCain appeal to the white trash voting block. Once again you can see why Palin is a brilliant pick politically.

bayam on September 1, 2008 at 5:35 PM

bayam, McCain already had them, thanks to Obama.

Palin, so far, is a brilliant pick because the right and the left are turned upside down from where they were on Friday, past, at a certain hour.

Now that the girl is pregnant, it’s her and the families’ business, and no one else’s.

It’s more than a tad curious, though, that many here defend teen pregnancies.

The lefties’ hypocrisy is staggering, but nothing new.

Warren Buffet isn’t an economist, so if I quote his thoughts on Bush’s economic polices they must be wrong.

However, I think that Alan Greenspan might have managed to get a degree in economics, and his opposition to Bush’s tax policies are very clear.

So I’m not sure I understand your point.

bayam on September 1, 2008 at 6:22 PM

Quoting the economic positions of partisans with axes to grind and multimillion-dollar financial deals to be let does not produce the most convincing argument.

Fluff and bitterness from Big S.

It will be a parade of schlock such as: “Palin knew this guy who knew this other guy whose dogcatcher’s fifth cousin overhead a conversation from yet another guy who said that some guy he knew might have heard something about Palin through the door of the men’s room at the Old Country Buffet”.

Bishop on September 1, 2008 at 6:51 PM

The only thing that seems like it might be problematic is TrooperGate. But with the facts as the are: 11 y/o tasered and high approval rating in state, it’s very hard to see how that is going to get real traction in public opinion. Honestly.

Moreover, that is something the McCain camp knew about and they aren’t sweating. I’m here to report that the McCain camp has done a hell of a job in this campaign, in a year where it was an automatic D win, so I’m going to trust their judgment on this. I don’t see cause to worry yet.

A bad debate performance is a much bigger concern then what they can dreg up on a 44 y/o pol. She’s a self-made woman largely and not beholden to insider politics, her past is going to come off fine.

I’m ready to pay higher taxes and so don’t call me a hypocrite. I’m willing to do my part- although I’d rather see spending cut.

By the way, Greenspan and other economists don’t even try to blame the deficit on Congress. That’s simply ridiculous and only people on the right actually believe that argument.

bayam on September 1, 2008 at 6:41 PM

You would rather see spending cut than pay higher taxes, yet are willing to pay higher taxes anyway. You also feel excessive spending is not due to Congressional excess(read entitlements). Do I have that right?

Pawlenty?
Yeah, that was the ticket.
Another anti-drilling Global Warming zombie with a level of personal dynamics that could almost light up a flashlight.
That would get the base all excited after Obama’s Acropolis speech.

Any conscious individual can see that this is not a typical election, and shopworn duds like Pawlenty are strictly anathema. McCain could not win against BHO, with all the MSM against him, and he knew it. Tacking on a Pawlenty would have just killed it off.
Look, they had their knives and MSM buddies out for a Romney “Rich White Guy” pick, and there would have been one revelation after another, from the “Big Dig” fiasco to… well, who knows?

A little “outside the box” thinking is in order here.

Really mediocre analyses here. Pawlenty – that’s half-assed.

Quoting the economic positions of partisans with axes to grind

Convincing people that Warren buffet and Bill Gates are partisan hacks who don’t speak with concern for the nation is truly one of the great accomplishments of the far right. Outside the US, Gates and Buffet are seen as generally apolitical symbols of American capitalism. Only in the US would our most successful capitalists be described as partisans for wanting to raise their own taxes.

Tell me- which of Buffet’s and Gates financial positions will benefit from higher taxes?

Meanwhile, the ‘death tax’ lobby supporters from the Walton family- who directly benefit from their positions- are treated as completely objective champions of the capitalist system.

You also feel excessive spending is not due to Congressional excess(read entitlements).

Take a look at the federal budget in 2008 and and compare it to the one in 2000. Entitlement spending isn’t the primary difference. You might want to catch up with the facts.

Even if there’s wasteful government spending, most economists agree that balancing the budget is still an important priority over time.

That’s spin. The dirty little secret of Troopergate is that the Palins, who controlled the levers of power throught he Governor’s office, could not come up with anything to charge the guy with – either a civil or criminal offense – so they had to stoop to going after his job in a very unbecoming way. Then they covered it up. Then it came out anyway. Sure, the trooper at the center of it was a scumbag – but the Palins have shown that they can be pretty scummy too.
