Video: So, how’s the news about Palin’s daughter playing at the convention?

Newsday columnist and possible amateur Scalia impersonator Larry Levy weighs in. Just one man’s observation, but it’s precisely what I’d expect given the palpable jolt of enthusiasm she’s thrown into the GOP and grassroots conservatives. As for his take on how working-class women might react, Althouse made a similar point about judgmentalism earlier. Let’s hope they’re right. The clip’s short but very savvy. Click the image to watch.

Update: The media’s dying for this unconventional pick to explode in McCain’s face. They can taste it: “I covered the Dan Quayle campaign. Is there no sense of panic over the love child issue or is there a belief that it shows that she is like a lot of American families?”

Update: I linked this in the last thread but it works here too. Fred Thompson today in Minneapolis:

Pushed by NEWSWEEK’s reporters and editors to say whether having a pregnant teenage daughter and five-month-old baby with Down syndrome at home will raise questions about Palin’s “priorities,” Thompson responded by questioning the questioners. “Would you be saying that about man running for office in her shoes?” he asked. “I really think you’re going to be surprised at how average people and women who are not necessarily political one way or another identify with her. I see nothing in this that will hurt Sarah Palin politically. I mean, I get that it’s a necessary part of the process to ask those questions. But we have to keep it fair. If we don’t keep it fair, it will redound to her benefit.” Judging by the reaction in the room–“I look around this table all these angry men, and I can’t believe they’re even asking this question,” quipped one female NEWSWEEKer–I have a feeling he’s right. Saying a woman can’t pursue her professional goals AND care for her children at the same time is never a political winner–whether it’s conservatives or liberals wagging their fingers.

Their attacks on her will have a backlash with the undecideds and the working moms.

They’re looking at the wrong demographics. Palin’s extreme anti-abortion stance (she once stated in a debate that she herself would “choose life” fer her daughter if her daugter were raped) and her membership in Feminists for Life (OK with some birth control, but not “abortifacient” birth control – i.e. the pill) will make a lot of moderates (especially moderate women) reeeeeaaaly question whether they want to give her the tiebreaking vote in the Senate, not to mention putting her a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Remember – I told you guys that abortion would be an issue in this campaign, and not to the GOP’s advantage.

Or, as some kooks on DKos called it, “a married to geebus” ring. You just have to laugh. My fear is for Bristol’s and the rest of the family’s emotional health. I can’t imagine how much you’d feel like a bug-in-a-jar. I’m sure Gov.Palin had their permission and blessing, but oh, I hope and pray they have ducks’ backs. We love you, Palins!

This isn’t the 1950s teenage girls don’t go visit an Aunt for 9 months then come home. Really The Kossacks are watching what kind of movies exactly it is 2008. These must be really old hippies that are posting on Kos you know they were teenagers in the 50s and this is what would have happened when they were younger the baby would be hidden somehow then passed off as a sister. Nevermind the math doesn’t work and that the baby is a special needs baby god bless baby trig. This happens with women, when they have babys when they are older.

So this tells us something of the average age of the people who post on Kos, they are in their 60s, and they have some kind of repressed attitude about women’s reproduction.

Anyone remember Rosemary Kennedy? She was the retarded sister of JFK that they hid from society. She was given a lobotomy at the age of 23 (possibly the first in the US) and made to live in institutions around the country under Joseph Kennedy’s orders. So, while the Dems hide their special children, Palin is leading the way and embracing her own in the public, through thick and thin.

Way to go Sarah-cuda!!!

ManlyRash on September 1, 2008 at 5:44 PM

Big Ass claims to speak for a lot of moderates, especially moderate women who of course all think in conformity with the Big Ass.

Most moderates think for themselves and not for others.

Most moderates realize that teenagers act impulsively by nature.

Most moderates know not to cast the first stone as moderates realize that no one is perfect.

Hold on, Republicans are allowed to proclaim Clinton unfit to hold office because the behavior of our executives sets an example for the rest of the country… but Palin gets a free ticket? I don’t see how teenage pregnancy- especially high school pregnancy- represents the values of this country or exemplary parenting. It certainly doesn’t represent my brand of family values.

Let me restate Palin’s appeal to white trash voters- I should have been more sensitive and described those individuals as lower income whites who appreciate a trailer based lifestyle.

I heard the news and my gut reaction was, “so what-she at least didn’t kill the baby”. The left’s reaction at what is an everyday story to alot of us, and the fact that she has a ring on her finger, is breathtaking. They’re eating themselves from within, here.

It’s not like Cheney’s gay daughter mattered one damn bit in the election, despite ahole Gore bringing it up during the debate, did it?

The only scandal here is if she aborted the baby. Now let’s talk about Tony Rezko, the actual FELON in this election, mmkay, driveby media?

sven10077 on September 1, 2008 at 5:23 PM

I agree. McCain made a mistake in backpedaling on the house non-issue and essentially apologizing. That gave credibility to any issue that was irrelevant, other than demonstrating that he and his family manage their money extremely well.

Turn the tables. Go out and be proud of it. Open the doors wide and let the hurricane winds spawned from the fresh desert air in AZ and the unblemished wilderness of AK flood Washington.

Ladies and gentlemen, this in the uncensored reality of what America really is. Real families creating real successes and achieving real results in their lives, communities, states and their nation. This is not speeches and rhetoric. This is not a multimedia presentation that thinly masks old school politics, corruption and hateful opinions. This is REAL CHANGE that is demanding to reform Washington and that is bolstered by track record of comparable and success from the lowest levels of government to the highest levels.

This is the Republican party of 2008. We are no longer a bad of old white guys. We have never been a political legacy built solely on family wealth, political expediency or by clinging to the accomplishments of others who were greater than ourselves.

This is really the Change We Need.

Damiano on September 1, 2008 at 5:51 PM

AP, you missed Obama’s reaction. To quote in part:

Obama said: “You know my mother had me when she was 18 and how a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn’t be a topic of our politics”.

What is rich about this is, as always, it’s all about Obama. An attack on Palin’s daughter is an attack on him, because of his life experience. What if his mother HADN’T had him at 18. Who knows what his narrative would be then. But, given his life, this is outrageous! This is just so, so typical of him. My mouth is agape.

He’s narcissistic to the core. It’s not hard to see. It’s right there in front of our faces.

Paul-Cincy on September 1, 2008 at 5:51 PM

Yeah that bayam is a power to the people kind of guy. As long as the people don’t get too close, after all they stink.

I liked this from Jeff at protein wisdom:

That the Palin family — by dint of ugly rumor mongering from “progressive activists” and a compliant left-leaning press that was cynically situating itself to pretend that these rumors “needed investigating” — was all but compelled to release information about their teenage daughter, is precisely the kind of thing that drives real civil libertarians and privacy advocates crazy, especially because the information has nothing whatever to do with Governor Palin’s candidacy, but instead invades the privacy (and quite possibly affects the “choice”) of a minor.

This kind of savage smear campaign by leftists and so-called “feminists” — a campaign that forced a young woman to make public a very private matter in order to stop vicious rumors about the Palin family — suggests that, when it comes to “privacy concerns” (NSA data mining for terrorists = bad; demanding the release of a Governor’s medical records = good; parental notification for abortions performed on women under a certain age = bad; insisting that the world be privy to the private sexual and family concerns of the seventeen-year-old daughter of a conservative = good), “progressives” care about such things only insofar as it protects their political interests and advances their political agenda.

The left, as it has now been shown in one of the ugliest incidences of McCarthyite bullying I can remember, has no core belief in privacy, or even an investment in actual “choice” for women — unless the woman in question falls in line with their particular orthodoxies, that is. Anyone else is an “anti-woman” woman, and as such is subject to public exposure and ridicule.

The ironic thing is, Bristol Palin’s political beliefs aren’t even known, beyond (I assume) her support for her mother. But hey: all is fair in love and war, and suddenly, the progressive left seems quite unconcerned with “collateral damage” and “the children!™

Hopefully, any real feminist — not the kinds of second wave “establishment feminists” who have eschewed the end game of equality for the politically charged power politics of identity group activism and grievance pimping — will be so appalled by what has transpired over the last several days that they will run screaming from the “enlightened” base of the Democratic party: totalitarian “progressives” who have devoured Alinsky like he was a particularly plump and inviting veggie burger.

They are what they pretend to despise. And in the quiet moments between attacks, I suspect many of them recognize this, and secretly curse what it is they’ve become.

Why not put up a registry and send the gifts- donations to a charity for familys who need help with their new babys. From what I have seen of the Palins, I am sure their grand child, will be well taken care of it would be nice to let their supporters express their well wishes, for the new baby. Chelsea Clinton was NEVER political fodder during the Clinton years

Eh, in all fairness, I do recall a few snide comments from Conservatives about Chelsea’s “appearance” making their way into the media, but I have never seen such eagerness to get the other guy until now.

The press (as well as Team Obama, the Kos kids, etc) will try so hard to find a way to spin this that isn’t sleazy, totally out-of-bounds, or sexist.

But, at the end of the day, Bristol is almost a legal adult, keeping the child, and marrying the father. Her parents are proud to be grandparents and the family is supporting her daughter 100%. Isn’t that exactly what a family with Conservative values would do?

I dare the MSM to try and turn this into something it isn’t. Because once they do, the rest of America will see them for what they are – biased, disgusting, and completely vapid of any self respect.

Dedicated to AP and his new-found clear-liquid optimism:

Hello.
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone home?

Come on, now.
I hear youre feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.

Relax.
I need some information first.
Just the basic facts:
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ships smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I cant hear what youre sayin.
When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I cant explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.

Ok.
Just a little pinprick. [ping]
Therell be no more –aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.

Can you stand up?
I do believe its working. good.
Thatll keep you going for the show.
Come on its time to go.

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ships smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I cant hear what youre sayin.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

Hey, idiot, Palin’s 17 year old daughter ain’t running for office. Clinton was. Clinton was having sex with all sorts of vaginas. Clinton was lying about having sex with all sorts of women. Clinton was lying about all sorts of things. So maybe Republicans pointed to Clinton’s egregious behavior as a question of his ability to lead, but let’s face facts: he was acting like a 15 year old man-ho. And his judgement to lead was terrible.

Again, the 17 year old’s decisions are her own. Believe it or not, 17 year olds are capable of making decisions themselves. Not because their mom said so.

Let me restate Palin’s appeal to white trash voters- I should have been more sensitive and described those individuals as lower income whites who appreciate a trailer based lifestyle.

bayam on September 1, 2008 at 5:47 PM

You are a snobbish, pompous ass.

rplat on September 1, 2008 at 5:58 PM

This guy bayspam is a creep. But hopefully, Obambi’s other supporters will react the same way he has, and cost their candidate even more women’s votes.

Leave it to a lib to try to make a comparison like that. Sure, the chief executive getting a BJ under the oval office desk is the same as having a daughter make a mistake.

You’re a real winner dude! I submit to your obvious overwhelming debate skills!!!

Clinton used an intern for a humidor and then committed perjury when answering to that fact.

Bristol Palin – who is NOT running for office – does the horizontal mambo with her fiance (Oh, God, the horror…teens have sex and get pregnant! who’da thunk it?) and now bulges with the fruit of her passion.

And, somehow, you manage to conflate the two. Not only that, but you invoke the awful spectre of (gasp) “trailer folk” – in an age when people like you celebrate the very same occurrence in Hollywood.

You are pitiful. And loathesome.

ManlyRash on September 1, 2008 at 5:59 PM

Um. Did anyone understand what Levy said.

Dang that accent!

davidk on September 1, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Snort !! A bit off topic.. watching Anthony Bourdain on Travel Channel, channels started flicking to show the MN delegates at the convention. Spouse changed channels four or five times, all Comcast was showing on all channels we tried was acceptance of McCain’s nomination. Snicker. It flicked back after about two minutes, found it highly amusing though… :)

grasshopper68 on September 1, 2008 at 6:00 PM

bayqam:

There is a helluva difference between Clinton getting a BJ in the Oval Office from an intern and the 17 year old daughter of a candidate getting pregnant.

sheesh. You can not be that dense.

Bristol did not put her hand on a bible and make any promises to anyone. Bristol did not lie to the country.

I did not support the impeachment of Clinton, I thought it went way too far, but to compare President Bill Clinton to this young woman is just stupid.

Bishop on September 1, 2008 at 6:03 PM

Big S:

Not all women are one issue voters. And most people think that Republicans are more likely to not support abortion. So, it is not a shocker to women that Palin is pro life, it has nothing to do with this.

Terrye on September 1, 2008 at 6:03 PM

Bill Clinton was impeached for lying under federal oath that he did not have sexual relations with that woman. His defense explanation:
1. It depends on what is is.
2. I did it because I could.

No one but that type of manipulating, bullying, abusive and predatory liar deserves to be called denigrating slurs. Bill was impeached. Even Nixon had enough “honor” to resign rather than face impeachment!

maverick muse on September 1, 2008 at 6:03 PM

Just because you have a problem with people who are of the less economic means doesn’t mean they aren’t allowed to vote. Unless, of course, you think that economics should determine whether or not someone is allowed to vote.

I’m not a Republican elitist and don’t believe that the wealthy represent a special class that should be given massive tax breaks when the only result is making the rich richer. The collapse of the real estate market has made it clear that there hasn’t been any kind of miracle behind the economy. The only outcome is a massive deficit and greater dependency on our lenders in China and the Middle East. So don’t accuse me of voting for policies that give Bush’s country club friends a free tax ride.

The real issue, from what I recall during Clinton’s tenure- is whether Palin represents good values and character.

Clinton lied about his actions and he did so after taking the oath of Presidential office.

Bishop on September 1, 2008 at 6:05 PM

bayam,

I know you’re just trolling and that you realize that you can’t compare what one president did with what a vice-presidential candidate’s daughter did, but I figured I’d mention it.

The young lady made her decision and decided to take responsibility for the results of that decision. Her mom was there for her with support and encouragement to do the right thing. This is how real families really work.

It’s funny that the pregnancy has apparently been an open secret for people that know the family and Bristols friends and schoolmates, but never made much of a stir in Alaska. That just shows you the difference between Alaskans and the average liberal.

Immolate on September 1, 2008 at 6:05 PM

I also expect that there are a whole lot of women out there that are pro-life and not big voters. That will be energized by the Palin pick and show up to vote.

conservnut on September 1, 2008 at 6:06 PM

When people have sex before marriage, THAT is a choice.
When they get pregnant as a result, YOU DON’T HAVE a choice but to let that baby live.
It is the baby’s OWN life, and we don’t take it.
I applaud this family. THAT is courage.
Courage to admit that you are wrong but you are not going to “make it right” by another wrong.

QFT. The only way to effectively confront the Palin nomination is to respect her life experience, to treat her as a human being, and only then attack her suitability for the office. And for the most part they can’t do that. It’s not in them. Is it because they must always operate in the realm of identity politics? This must be so hard for them. If they want to make this about identity politics, they will lose!

Spot on Terrye, which accounts for all their vile attacks, knee jerk hatred, and bomb throwing insults instead of intelligent debate.

If a lib gets in your face about this, simply look them in the eye and ask, “So, what’s your problem?”

Let them just try to get on a moral high horse about it. Let them just try. Be ready to duck. The cognitive dissonance will likely make their head explode.

By the way, Sarah Palin doesn’t use a night light because she’s afraid of the dark. She uses it because the dark is afraid of Sarah Palin.
