RNCC Day 1: The quiet of the storm, continued
posted at 7:10 pm on September 1, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
For those who have wondered whether much has happened today, the answer is twofold. First, there seems to be an unexpected level of activity in the convention today, but its significance has not been high. For the most part, the politics really has been muted, with most officials careful not to distract from the conscious decision of John McCain to put “country first”. Privately, this also seems to be the case. While campaigns have tried to schedule interviews with bloggers and media with surrogates when the convention returns to normal, which more and more looks likely tomorrow.
What stories buzzed through the halls today? The Palin pregnancy was the hot topic, and the reaction was … pretty much as I suggested: no one to whom I spoke thought it merited much consideration. Barack Obama’s wise and classy statement garnered good reviews on Blogger Row, but a few people thought that his statement of having “no evidence” of his campaign’s participation in the earlier “I’m My Own Grandma” rumor smacked of lawyerly finesse. For myself, it seemed like common sense; Obama could hardly give a categorical yes or no without having interrogated his entire campaign, and the answer seemed more than reasonable to me.
On the so-called “Troopergate” scandal (are we recycling Clinton-era scandal names now?), there seems to be plenty of willingness to give Palin the benefit of the doubt, but also people understand that this, at least, is a political issue. The news that she hired an attorney didn’t surprise the few people who noticed it, since it’s now a national topic and she needs to protect herself in the media blitz.
Bloggers, in fact, provided most of the fireworks. It turns out that they don’t really have facilities for all of the bloggers invited, at least not in the hall. Most bloggers got assigned to the seats in the spectator area, which do not have power for the laptops. They can have unlimited access to the Media Filing Center, which most of us didn’t quite realize, but only a few bloggers have actual blogging facilities in the hall. Expect lots of blowback as bloggers realize this; some of this will definitely find its way into the blogosphere. Keep an eye out for it.
Otherwise, this appears to be a day of shaking out the infrastructure and preparation for the days ahead. With Gustav weakening and the damage looking less than initially feared, we may return to normal operation soon — maybe tomorrow.

Blowback

Who the f*ck cares? Maybe now that crunch time is on we will start focusing on our own platform and strengths instead of trying to play grabass-gotcha with Obama.

Is there any word on who may give speeches tomorrow, if any?
locke on September 1, 2008 at 7:15 PM
How petty do you think you sound?
The Race Card on September 1, 2008 at 7:16 PM
Again, thanks Ed,
I did enjoy seeing my very favorite first Lady, Laura, and Cindy on Fox news. I will be watching for your posts.
You do a more than great job here at HA.

I think Obama made it clear what his convention’s response to Gustav would have been. As with the injured troops in Germany, the party must go on.
Ronnie on September 1, 2008 at 7:17 PM
A better question is how pathetic do you have to be to answer the same comment twice within two minutes.
Darth Executor on September 1, 2008 at 7:18 PM
Why nobody focused on denuding the O-pollo platform piece by piece…?
I mean for all the bluff and bluster it is FDR 2008 with tire gagues and imaginary free, clean, abundant power in 3650 days thrown in.
I think it is based on unicorn flatula and donkey spit.

The lady doth protest too much.

as petty as people who imply the Governor of Alaska’s househole is like some bad incest porn movie/Polanski plot??
probably not…like someone enraged by the triple standards of the press?
Absolutely
sven10077 on September 1, 2008 at 7:21 PM
The nutroots must be gravely disappointed that Gustav turned out to be less damaging than initially thought. What a pathetic lot!
Guess they’re still holding out hope that Hanna and Ike will slam into the southeast as Cat 3s or higher before either John McCain or Sarah Palin gets to take the stage. I just hope the show will go on, whatever happens. The Gulf states have competent (and coincidentally, Republican) governors who know how to manage natural disasters. Today’s speeches by Laura Bush and Cindy McCain were effective and appropriate. Charity websites have been promoted. Now can we just get on with the convention?
BTW, I live in South Florida and have been through many hurricanes, including a Category 3.
Dariaanne on September 1, 2008 at 7:21 PM
your state’s levees are not in the condo building business.
I think this boomeranged on the donks and will be bad PR in “flyover country” for them….
thanks Fowler and Mik’Al’Moor.

This is the week when McCain and Palin can make their case to America. It will be hard work, but they will do fine.
I was checking the regular networks when Palin was announced/addressed the crowd in Ohio-not one network thought it was “news” enough to break in on their programming, or even put a crawler across the bottom of the screen. Ho Hum-nothing to see here. Of course Hillary’s walkthrough on the stage of the convention hours before her speech was considered “IMPORTANT NEWS!!!!!!!”
Fair? No. Reality? Yes. McCain/Palin will win in a landslide, and Obama will go back to not working in the Senate. Life goes on.
Doug on September 1, 2008 at 7:31 PM
When they said that, they meant Bush’s “temple”. Of course with Obama’s they had to prove they could do bigger and better.
I like the RNC stage, btw.
Spirit of 1776 on September 1, 2008 at 7:32 PM
so do I the subtlety is nice..a good portion of the electorate seems fed up with the opulance and BS of the beltway.
I hope McCain stays subtle and just has a bamboo cage with a POW/MIA flag and not some scene from Platoon or something.
Not because I don’t think he “deserves” it but you know they’d nail him on “ego” while somehow having forgotten about it last week.
all the best,
sven

and so does the Republic win or lose…wish the other side grasped that fact.

OMG! WTF??? I turned on C-SPAN to see what I’ve missed, and what should I see and hear? Complete coverage of the ANTI-REPUBLICAN convention!!! Every word uttered by all the nutroots at the “anti-war” demonstration. Has C-SPAN lost its mind???? This is unconscionable!!!!!

There is no coincidence in that. Lousianna’s trouble last time was the complete incompetence of the local authorities. But Nagel (is that right?) has shown that with good superiors he can be a competent mayor. At least they have learned from their mistakes.
petunia on September 1, 2008 at 7:48 PM
Are you serious? If this is true, it needs its own blog post.
RushBaby on September 1, 2008 at 7:54 PM
Seriously? I can’t imagine that listening to the crock these people talk can really do to much to hurt Republicans. The protesters don’t even know what year it is. And that the Veit Nam war has been over for a while now. They are sort of like those soldiers that hide in caves and you find them years later…

True, Nagin was an abject failure last time around, as was Blanco. However, both were basically given a free pass by the BDS media. Now Republicans are in reactive mode, understandably. And yes, thankfully Nagin can perform the duties of his elected office when assisted by a real leader in the form of Governor Jindal. But it’s still a mystery to me why NO voters re-elected him in the first place.
Dariaanne on September 1, 2008 at 8:04 PM
In fairness, the convention is over so what else is there to cover?
I also watched on C-SPAN Politico’s gathering of on-line forum “journalists” including Huffington, so what a crock really. She sounded sane enough until Tucker Carlson mentioned global warming then she went off the deep end.
TWG78 on September 1, 2008 at 8:05 PM
The point is, this is supposed to be OUR time, the REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION. Instead I get screeching, frothing left-wing crap. And at the bottom of the screen C-SPAN keeps flashing, “Republican National Convention.” This sucks!
mushroom on September 1, 2008 at 8:07 PM
The reason school bus Ray Nagin’s city re-elected him is the same as why crack DC mayor Marion Barry’s constituents re-elected him.
If Kwame can stay out of jail he may get himself re-elected for the same reason as well.

And the O-storm just became another lotta wind without significance. See that movie, too. Down side; NO is another Gimmie city along with Chi, Boston, DC, and Detroit.
Caststeel on September 1, 2008 at 8:38 PM
Compared to the Hollywood DNC, I like it calm. Better decisions or appearance of such.

DELEGATES ATTACKED BY PROTESTERS!
Members of the Connecticut delegation said they were attacked by protesters when they got off their bus near the Xcel Center, KMSP-TV reported.
Former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, one of the delegates, told the station and The Hartford Courant that a group of protesters tried to rip the credentials off their necks and sprayed them with a substance that burned their eyes and stained their clothes.
“Peaceful”.

Exactly it has sickend me! The eyesore of humanity they were showing(protesters)dirtbags literally dirty folks I could smell them through my t.v. are the same ones from the DNC convention. Just looking at them made me want to go and get a shot of penicillin.
PiggieSez on September 1, 2008 at 9:47 PM
Tony 737–
Have you seen the video over at Gateway Pundit of the anarchists dropping sacks of cement from an overpass onto the delegates’ buses on the highway below?
PA Cat on September 1, 2008 at 9:55 PM
Cat, no I haven’t, but I’m on my way there now, thanks for the heads up.
Tony737 on September 1, 2008 at 10:38 PM
Thanks for the tip Cat, I hope Ed covers the story here on HotAir. It should be on the news, but it’s all hurricane, all the time.
Tony737 on September 1, 2008 at 11:31 PM
Okay what the heck is this.
I turn on the TV – as I usually do when I wake up – switch to Fox News, and I see this “280+ arrested in violent protest at GOP convention” line across the bar.
Absolutely disgusting. I hope to God the cops start whacking them over the head next time they act up.
