Reports: McCain camp only starting to fully vet Palin now? Update: 25 people vetted her, says Team McCain
posted at 8:05 pm on September 1, 2008 by Allahpundit
True or not? I’ll give you the “facts” as I’ve collected them and let you decide for yourself.
1. A guy named Andrew Halcro claimed this morning that eight people from Team McCain are checked into the local hotel in Wasilla and are poring through records. Who’s Halcro? He’s the independent who lost the gubernatorial race to her two years ago, and who was quoted sneering at her inability to articulate coherent policies in this weekend’s NYT. Not worth believing, right?
2. Wrong. ABC and NBC are also reporting that McCain’s people are on their way up there to try to beat the press to any hidden dirt.
3. Marc Ambinder claims to know from sources inside the McCain campaign that they’ve already been blindsided by the fact that she requested earmarks as mayor of Wasilla, that she supports a windfall profits tax, and that she doesn’t believe in man-made global warming. I’m skeptical about the last two; her positions are easily researchable on Google, as is the fact that she initially supported the bridge to nowhere. But like I asked this morning, if they knew about the bridge reversal, why’d they let her tout it on Friday knowing that it’d end up being gotcha’d?
4. Rick Davis, McCain’s campaign manager, told WaPo this weekend that none of the final VP contenders were vetted more or less than the others and that all of them were subjected to a records review and FBI background check. Minor problem: The FBI says it didn’t do a background check on Palin (or on any other candidate, for that matter). Maybe Davis meant a background check equivalent to what the FBI routinely does for government employees?
5. Mark Halperin’s asking a lot of unanswered questions here that make it sound like he already knows, or has reason to know, the answer to each one is “no.”
Maybe McCain does know all the dirt already, like he apparently knew about Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy, and simply decided the upside was worth the risk. Or maybe he decided that since he was gambling the election by picking someone so inexperienced anyway, they might as well cut corners on the vetting on the assumption that there’s only so much trouble a hockey mom could have gotten herself into. I don’t think the public is so process-oriented that they’ll draw any sharp conclusions about his judgment in not fully vetting her; I think the risk is that she’ll die a death of a thousand cuts as the media exposes and then inflates a bunch of exceedingly venial sins (the Troopergate investigation being a notable exception), incorporating them into a larger narrative about how America can’t take a chance on a VP who might have outstanding parking tickets that no one even knows about. The point, in other words, isn’t to prove that she’s evil or corrupt, which she almost certainly isn’t; it’s simply to grasp at all available straws, no matter how short, and bundle them together in an “unknown quantity” narrative so that she’s perpetually on the defensive about such important matters as why she didn’t oppose the bridge to nowhere early enough. It’s the best possible contrast for Biden, too. Love him or loathe him, he’s been in D.C. since the Mesozoic Era. WYSIWYG. But Sarah Palin — did you know she served on the board of a 527 for Ted Stevens three years ago? Why, I’ll bet Joe Biden’s never even spoken to Ted Stevens.
Here’s the newest tidbit, straight out of the chute from ABC about a party Palin quit 12 years ago. Expect to hear the name “Robert Byrd” invoked tomorrow in the context of youthful political indiscretions subsequently forgiven by our progressive superiors. Exit question: Assuming, hypothetically, that I wanted to stop sniffing glue, this would be the wrong week for it, no?
Update: Politico puts it in perspective. The “ordinary gal” forcefield is a powerful shield indeed:
“Authenticity is the most important characteristic for someone seeking public office,” said Nick Ayers, executive director of the Republican Governors Association. “Any news that comes out about her is not going to hurt her because it reinforces the point that she is authentically one of us.”…
Even the governor’s own Troopergate scandal, in which Palin is alleged to have exerted undue pressure to fire a state trooper, is suffused with an element that many families can identify with: one sister stepping in on behalf of another in an acrimonious dispute with a brother-in-law.
Powerful media organizations are beginning to pour resources into this story, so much more damaging twists and turns may await. But assuming the accusations don’t grow more serious, it is of a considerably different nature as an abuse of power than the last Troopergate scandal to rock the political world — the one in which Bill Clinton was alleged to use his state troopers in Arkansas to procure women as sex partners. That wouldn’t excuse Palin’s actions, of course, but it would frame them in such a way that could limit the political damage.
Update: Team Maverick tries to soothe a jumpy blogger’s fraying nerves.
Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser, said the campaign always planned to send a “jump team” to the eventual running mate’s home state to work with the nominee’s staff, help with information requests from local and national reporters, and answer questions about documents that were part of the review.
Culvahouse said Palin’s review, like others, began with a team of two dozen people culling information from public sources. The team reviewed speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces, for a number of potential running mates.
For Palin specifically, the team studied online archives of the state’s largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News, but didn’t request paper archives for Palin’s hometown newspaper for fear the secret review would become public…
Palin then was sent a personal data questionnaire with 70 “very intrusive” questions, Culvahouse said. She also was asked to submit a number of years of federal and state tax returns. The campaign also checked her credit.

1. If one is a McCain supporter, then one votes for Obama because one dislikes his VP choice?
Obviously not.
2. If one was not going to vote for McCain if he chose Lieberman, or even Ridge, then one votes for McCain because he likes the VP pick?
Obviously. (One even sends money to the campaign…12 million over the weekend)
3. 18 million Hillary voters take a second look at GOP ticket.
Some will. (Geraldine Farraro states she’s not sure who she’s voting for after the Palin pick)
Landslide.

hey someone else gets it:
Fishing permit violations. A blue-collar husband who racked up a DUI citation as a 22-year-old. An unmarried teenage daughter who is pregnant and a nasty child custody battle involving a family member.
All of this, to one degree or another, has surfaced in recent days as a result of efforts to discredit or undermine Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. But these revelations may have the opposite effect: In one sense, they could reinforce how remarkably unremarkable she is.
So far — and it is hard to tell what the future may hold for Palin’s unexpected national candidacy — the travails of the Palin family probably seem awfully familiar to many average Americans. It is this averageness that makes her such a politically promising running mate for John McCain — and such a dangerous opponent for Democrats. Many voters will find it easy to identify with her family’s struggles — a significant advantage in an election where the voting calculus is so unusually and intensely personal.

more:
Unlike running mates from both parties, dating back decades, the Palin family isn’t part of the moneyed elite or the governing class. Neither wife nor husband is the scion of a well-connected family. Sarah Palin attended a state school, and her brushes with the law are of the same nettlesome kind that drive recreational fishermen crazy in all 50 states.
“Look at the nature of this: small-town mayor, marrying the high school sweetheart — these are the kinds of things you’d see in a Budweiser commercial as opposed to an Amstel Light commercial,” said South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. “She wasn’t born of political pedigree, and people like that.”

great article:
The media doesn’t understand life membership in the NRA; they don’t understand getting up at 3 a.m. to hunt a moose; they don’t understand eating a mooseburger; they don’t understand being married to a guy who likes to snowmobile for fun. I am not surprised that they don’t get it. But Americans get it,” said Florida Rep. Adam Putnam. “A mooseburger means she is like one of us. She is not some jackass who’s ‘gone Washington.’”

Boasting is not a sign of enlightenment. It’s actually the opposite.
Boasting is, though, a sign of elitism. And elitism is a sign that you didn’t gain much from those books you claim to have read.

hmmmm…so much for the bad mother theme….
Lisa Murkowski had to run for re-election to her U.S. Senate seat in her own right during the next general election. Writes Johnson (at pages 88-89; emphasis mine):
In 2004, friends and supporters urged Sarah to challenge Lisa Murkowski. [By then,] Sarah had made a name for herself as a reformer, and supporters thought she had a good chance of winning. So, Sarah approached her family to discuss the possibility. Like all of her decisions, the decision had to be unanimous.
“People don’t believe me, but it’s true. It had to be a family decision,” she said. Todd was up for a move to Washington, D.C. and the girls were on board as well. But son Track, in his early teens, was becoming aware of the contentiousness of a political battle. He valued his privacy, and felt uncomfortable in the limelight. “Track did not want me to run, and he was adamant about it. He had to bless me,” Sarah said. “If he had said at the time ‘This is great,’ I would have done it.”
In 2006, however, Frank Murkowski himself was up for re-election as governor. Continues Johnson (at page 91): “This time, when Sarah talked with her family about running, the decision was a unanimous decision to go for it.”

there’s more:
Given that Gov. Palin was already subject to public scrutiny, Bristol’s impending wedding would have gotten at least state-wide publicity, as would the subsequent birth of Gov. Palin’s first grandchild. That much was already inevitable if Bristol Palin chose life instead of choosing to have an abortion.
What I want to specifically focus on, however, is Gov. Palin’s decision to accept John McCain’s offer to be his vice presidential running mate — knowing full well that the news about Bristol would ignite a national rumor-mill as a result.
I obviously don’t know for sure what conversations Gov. Palin had with her family, and in particular with her daughter Bristol, before giving Sen. McCain her decision. But given this history from 2004 — when a veto from Track stopped her from running for a U.S. Senate seat she might very well have won, in which case she would have become Barack Obama’s Senate classmate — I would wager a very, very large sum of money that Bristol Palin was given a veto right again. I would wager that she was warned, in detail, about the certainty that her privacy would be invaded in a sickening, vicious manner.
And I would wager that Bristol Palin must have said: “Go ahead, mom. Tell Senator McCain ‘Yes.’ I know what’s coming, but my baby and I will be okay.”
We know that Track decided to put his life and limb at risk for his country by enlisting in the Army and volunteering for service in Iraq. But Bristol Palin’s decision may be one of the most fearless, selfless acts any seventeen year old young woman has ever made. Even thinking of her being confronted with it brings tears to my eyes.

Christian values
1. Love God, love your family, love your neighbor, and be an example of charity to those too abusive to say thank you.
2. Do not judge others. Your plate if full enough with your own imperfections.
3. Do not expect ideal perfection from any but God. Humans fall short.
4. Babies are absolutely innocent, and to be loved, protected, and raised to become good people.
Taking responsibility for your own choices is a good thing. When you fall short, Christian values teach repentance of abusive behavior and to pray for good outcomes in difficult circumstances.
The hypocrisy that fuels hardship and public condemnation for a youth’s difficulty come from cold, hard hearts that take pleasure inflicting pain on others. Enabling and perpetuating abuse in is direct contradiction to Jesus’ teachings. It is not the Christian, but the non-Christian and the un-Christian who point to teenage pregnancy as a sin to be publicly scorned and the young mother to be publicly humiliated and spitefully abused. It is the press and the democrats who are abusive, not those exercising Christian values.
I see Palin’s personal and professional strengths as the assets that complement McCain’s presidency. I am not offended that Palin’s family is real. I am offended that the press and political opponents abuse Palin’s family in ways they would never tolerate Chelsea Clinton, Caroline Kennedy, or Michelle Obama and her children to be abused, let alone their own families as THEY are public figures as well.
Those who would detract from Palin because of babies have their own issues to overcome.
The Palin family is as all American as can be. They are good people, working hard to take care of each other and to do all they can for their country in hard times.
Palin minored in political science, majored in journalism. But to attribute Palin’s mind to her degree plan misses her essence. Her choices in studies enable her ideas into achievements through hard and diligent work that includes working with those around her. Though a strong person, Palin is not a prima dona “me-me-me” selfish personality. She is both a rising star and team player.
With her 80% constituent approval rating, I’m willing to bet the vast majority of her co-workers admire Sarah Palin with confidence in her abilities to become a great Vice President. The press want more vetting? No one’s stopping responsible journalists from interviewing Palin’s contacts in Alaska. The weather there is better than ever now; no excuse on that account. Get out of the tabloid business abusing children.
I have yet to find a reason to NOT support McCain/Palin in their POTUS campaign against Obama/Biden.

Yes. And it’s going to be a long 2 months. Followed by an even longer 4 years. (12 for some)
wise_man on September 2, 2008 at 8:38 AM
So? All this proves is that she’s straight. Go, Sarah, go!
Spanglemaker on September 2, 2008 at 9:14 AM
Yeah Allah- now’d be a real good time to stop sniffin’ and maybe go on a REAL LONG VACATION-like til Nov.5.
Yer hair on fire meltdowns every time the left throws a stone are gittin’ real annoying.
Relax- Sarah Palin is a GREAT pick and the base is gonna like her better and better.
ExTex on September 2, 2008 at 9:36 AM
What are you thinking Mac?
Have you gone senile?
The VP has to be ready from day one!
You totally blew your experience advantage and made everyone who was unaware of the amnesty debacle, seriously begin to doubt your judgement.
SaintOlaf on September 2, 2008 at 9:54 AM
You’re not happy with this pro-life VP? Hm, sounds like you need to take a page from Huck and reconcile with reality.
Spirit of 1776 on September 2, 2008 at 9:57 AM
He only picked her because he thought it would help him win.
Now that it is backfiring….what’s the point?
You just gave away your best advantage…..experience….for no reason!
Oh crap. We are so screwed if obama wins.
SaintOlaf on September 2, 2008 at 10:08 AM
You’re kidding, right? McCain picked her because the only other social conservative who was populist was Huckabee, and that would have killed the ticket within minutes.
Vashta.Nerada on September 2, 2008 at 10:21 AM
Gosh folks isn’t it a bit unseemly to be snapping at each other; like you have been posting of late.
It would appear to me that Saint Mc’s snap judgment is almost as deficient as both his short and long term memory.
Since this has suddenly become starkly evident to you all; you are now projecting your sublimated anger into nothing more than futilely nipping at each others heels.
Give it another 72 hours, or so and the inquisitive press will help to dispel your present confusion.
Cheer up…!

I don’t understand the liberals problem…they don’t believe it is a baby until it is born.
So Palin’s daughter has something in her body, but it isn’t a baby, what is the problem?
When the baby is born, we will see if there is a father and husband…until then, by their argument, it is a moot point.
right2bright on September 2, 2008 at 10:35 AM
To be honest, I have not read all the comments here, but I am still 100% behind Sarah Palin. I am as excited about her today as I was last Friday, 8.29.08. I donated to the McCain Campaign for the first time last Friday because of Governor Palin.
I can hardly wait to hear her speech at the convention!
Go,McCain/Palin ’08!
Oink on September 2, 2008 at 10:44 AM
The liberal media is in panic mode right now. They don’t know how to attack Palin and her family without discrediting themselves and looking rather mean and foolish to the American people. The choice of Palin is a political slam-dunk. I didn’t think that McCain had it in him. I guess I was wrong.
Palin will bring back the red States that had been showing signs of straying from the Republican fold and create a challenge for Obama in the borderline blue States. Picking her as the VP is all good for the Republican Party and most conservatives and libertarians couldn’t be happier. She represents real hope for the future that was missing for most Americans. She represents a real chance for change and reform that Obama was never going to deliver.

have to feel for the 17 yr old here. The lib media is dispicable, they could’ve cared less about John Edwards cheating on his terminal Cancer wife, yet think a 17yr old who chose life and marriage is a target.
they are in the gutter

Boasting? Keep the flawed analysis coming. You guys are funny, really. A statement of f-a-c-t is not boastful. Nice parsing of my comment, by the way. I finished the thought by stating, “And so have millions of others. Not that big of a deal to have done so.”
Hmm. Apparently, now, it’s elitist to point out facts.
You have zero idea what I have gained from any books I’ve read. To assume as much makes an ASS out of U and not ME.
I think they will vote for who they perceive is the most competent for the job at the time. How else do you explain eight years of Clinton?

Where is it going to get us tough guy?
Sounds like michell malkin likes s Palin.
Why doesn’t AP have a picture we can look at like ED?

In Michigan, in the most union part of the most blue collar part. This is not a typical state, and votes can swing wildly. There is the Southeast urban area, and the other bloc north, either of which can swing the state so we have had conservative GOP governors, and ultra liberal DEM governors. The only religion that plays badly is islam with non blacks. Although the state has a strong pro-life sentiment, it follows the leadership on handling the issue. It is not the South.
Romney’s father was a popular Governor and his reputation has grown, not diminished with time. Romney Sr. has become legend, a synonym for the good times. He would have been the choice if they needed Michigan.
Macomb county is famous as the county that swung for Reagan. The Detroit black vote is locked so solid for Obama it has to exceed the national black Obama vote.
Obama was an upsetting choice to about half of the typical non black DEM voters I interact with. The other half soldily buy the ‘Change’ message.
Obama pushed a big block over to McCain, and Palin is moving a part of that block away. They do not want to vote Obama but are unhappy with Palin. I have heard several now say they will not vote. That could help McCain except the black vote is unmovable.
Labeling people nutroots for taking apart the Palin decision on a conservative web site is a big mistake. It is better to work the negatives now, or the enemy will take her apart their way.
McCain by springing the dark horse now has allowed the MSM to begin the vetting. Obama news and gaffes have been shoved aside and the general press stream will be negative Palin for a long time. If Palin was bullet proof this is a plus. If Palin is shaky, McCain takes a hit.
She can become an underdog if the press plays it wrong. That is where McCain took a gamble. He has to hope they play it wrong. in other words, the game is in their hands now. McCain gave up a well scrubbed candidate who could pull one of the three midwest states Obama must have to win.
What a mess comes from playing a game to nominate a candidate who never had the conservative plurality (I mean McCain, not Palin)

So what, Michelle Malkin allows reasonable discourse and she frowns on surly nastiness and threats especially toward Allah who is the host here. And insulting where he comes from, now that’s uncalled for.
AprilOrit on September 2, 2008 at 11:45 AM
What threats were made towards Allah and how do you know she frowns on surly nastiness?
Insulting where someone comes from isn’t surly or nasty. just try being from Oklahoma or Arkansas
Are you a moderator or do you hold some postion for her comany or do you know her personally?
kangjie on September 2, 2008 at 11:55 AM
She talks about the nastiness by The Left all the time.
So you believe in emulating bad behavior?
What’s whether I know her or not have to do with it? And what’s it to you? Who are you?? LOL
Civil discourse is something she is a strong proponent of, you would know this if you read her or watched her, enough said.
AprilOrit on September 2, 2008 at 11:59 AM
One more thing that surprised me. Installing Palin has made Hillary the underdog with some women. I should have seen it coming, but I was surprised at the response.
Hillary got snubbed by the DEMs. The Palin gets pulled out of a box and praised to the heavens for accomplishments that do not appear to exceed Hillary’s.
It does not matter they are in two different parties. This is primal human emotion. Palin has been dubbed a Chosen one, just like Obama. This is a hurdle to cross
entagor on September 2, 2008 at 12:00 PM
I’ve said this from day one when Palin was announced and got a lot of pushback for it. I was excited he had actually named a conservative, but was very concerned about the vetting of Sarah. Yes…I knew she had been “vetted” by McCain’s people, but when you have a pack of ravenous liberal media wolves, every aspect of said candidates personal and political life will be left open to interpretation to the MSM. The Boston Globe sent private investigators to Guatemala to interview one of the illegals who worked on Romney’s lawn, for hell’s sakes. That’s why I’ve always said a candidate who has been exposed to the disinfecting sunshine of the MSM is a better pick than some unknown that is vetted by John’s team. I hope there are no big skeletons that come tumbling out of her closet.

As you can see Michelle Malkin does not subscribe to the usual nastiness, regardless from where it comes. If a blogger on The Right did it she would be on them as well.
AprilOrit on September 2, 2008 at 12:02 PM
Well put.
AprilOrit on September 2, 2008 at 12:04 PM
Nobody who has “lived” a life, made decisions, ran for public office, been in the public for years, could ever be squeaky clean.
No matter how much “vetting”, each and everyone of the potential candidates have something in their background that is not right. The only way you make a mistake is by making decisions and the only way of not making a mistake is by doing nothing.
right2bright on September 2, 2008 at 12:22 PM
Entagor–
Good observations on the media and Hillary factor.
okonkolo on September 2, 2008 at 12:42 PM
I completely agree with you there. You would have to agree that some mistakes provide more impact on a candidate than another, right? Let’s say John Edwards had made it onto Obama’s ticket…would you not agree that could have imperiled his campaign? I still think that intense media vetting, especially by liberal media, is the best way to qualify our conservative candidates.
hot-heir on September 2, 2008 at 1:30 PM
She talks about the nastiness by The Left all the time.

What is it to me?
You are spouting orders like you are the rule setter and all knowing and all seeing mind reader of michell malkin,’
I’ve watched her and read her for years but I never claim to speak for her.
I think she can get by without you just fine.
She is very good a slamming people when she is pushed just ask senator Graham or Geraldo whats his name.
Don’t you remember and of the immigration debates tough guy.
Get over yourself you self important blow hard.
kangjie on September 2, 2008 at 2:13 PM
I think this is a lot to do about nothing. If anything a unwed pregnant daughter is going to help them. How many of you don’t have family or a friend who got pregnant before they were married. Not one, I bet. This makes the McCain/Palin ticket seem more like real people with the same problems many of us have had to face.
That crap about seven houses wasn’t so good for McCain….this isn’t hurting him a bit. She’s a beautiful smart woman who understands America (maybe better than he does). We’re lucky to have her and I know she’s helping me get back on board.
