Reports: McCain camp only starting to fully vet Palin now? Update: 25 people vetted her, says Team McCain

True or not? I’ll give you the “facts” as I’ve collected them and let you decide for yourself.

1. A guy named Andrew Halcro claimed this morning that eight people from Team McCain are checked into the local hotel in Wasilla and are poring through records. Who’s Halcro? He’s the independent who lost the gubernatorial race to her two years ago, and who was quoted sneering at her inability to articulate coherent policies in this weekend’s NYT. Not worth believing, right?

2. Wrong. ABC and NBC are also reporting that McCain’s people are on their way up there to try to beat the press to any hidden dirt.

3. Marc Ambinder claims to know from sources inside the McCain campaign that they’ve already been blindsided by the fact that she requested earmarks as mayor of Wasilla, that she supports a windfall profits tax, and that she doesn’t believe in man-made global warming. I’m skeptical about the last two; her positions are easily researchable on Google, as is the fact that she initially supported the bridge to nowhere. But like I asked this morning, if they knew about the bridge reversal, why’d they let her tout it on Friday knowing that it’d end up being gotcha’d?

4. Rick Davis, McCain’s campaign manager, told WaPo this weekend that none of the final VP contenders were vetted more or less than the others and that all of them were subjected to a records review and FBI background check. Minor problem: The FBI says it didn’t do a background check on Palin (or on any other candidate, for that matter). Maybe Davis meant a background check equivalent to what the FBI routinely does for government employees?

5. Mark Halperin’s asking a lot of unanswered questions here that make it sound like he already knows, or has reason to know, the answer to each one is “no.”

Maybe McCain does know all the dirt already, like he apparently knew about Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy, and simply decided the upside was worth the risk. Or maybe he decided that since he was gambling the election by picking someone so inexperienced anyway, they might as well cut corners on the vetting on the assumption that there’s only so much trouble a hockey mom could have gotten herself into. I don’t think the public is so process-oriented that they’ll draw any sharp conclusions about his judgment in not fully vetting her; I think the risk is that she’ll die a death of a thousand cuts as the media exposes and then inflates a bunch of exceedingly venial sins (the Troopergate investigation being a notable exception), incorporating them into a larger narrative about how America can’t take a chance on a VP who might have outstanding parking tickets that no one even knows about. The point, in other words, isn’t to prove that she’s evil or corrupt, which she almost certainly isn’t; it’s simply to grasp at all available straws, no matter how short, and bundle them together in an “unknown quantity” narrative so that she’s perpetually on the defensive about such important matters as why she didn’t oppose the bridge to nowhere early enough. It’s the best possible contrast for Biden, too. Love him or loathe him, he’s been in D.C. since the Mesozoic Era. WYSIWYG. But Sarah Palin — did you know she served on the board of a 527 for Ted Stevens three years ago? Why, I’ll bet Joe Biden’s never even spoken to Ted Stevens.

Here’s the newest tidbit, straight out of the chute from ABC about a party Palin quit 12 years ago. Expect to hear the name “Robert Byrd” invoked tomorrow in the context of youthful political indiscretions subsequently forgiven by our progressive superiors. Exit question: Assuming, hypothetically, that I wanted to stop sniffing glue, this would be the wrong week for it, no?

Update: Politico puts it in perspective. The “ordinary gal” forcefield is a powerful shield indeed:

“Authenticity is the most important characteristic for someone seeking public office,” said Nick Ayers, executive director of the Republican Governors Association. “Any news that comes out about her is not going to hurt her because it reinforces the point that she is authentically one of us.”…

Even the governor’s own Troopergate scandal, in which Palin is alleged to have exerted undue pressure to fire a state trooper, is suffused with an element that many families can identify with: one sister stepping in on behalf of another in an acrimonious dispute with a brother-in-law.

Powerful media organizations are beginning to pour resources into this story, so much more damaging twists and turns may await. But assuming the accusations don’t grow more serious, it is of a considerably different nature as an abuse of power than the last Troopergate scandal to rock the political world — the one in which Bill Clinton was alleged to use his state troopers in Arkansas to procure women as sex partners. That wouldn’t excuse Palin’s actions, of course, but it would frame them in such a way that could limit the political damage.

Update: Team Maverick tries to soothe a jumpy blogger’s fraying nerves.

Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser, said the campaign always planned to send a “jump team” to the eventual running mate’s home state to work with the nominee’s staff, help with information requests from local and national reporters, and answer questions about documents that were part of the review.

Culvahouse said Palin’s review, like others, began with a team of two dozen people culling information from public sources. The team reviewed speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces, for a number of potential running mates.

For Palin specifically, the team studied online archives of the state’s largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News, but didn’t request paper archives for Palin’s hometown newspaper for fear the secret review would become public…

Palin then was sent a personal data questionnaire with 70 “very intrusive” questions, Culvahouse said. She also was asked to submit a number of years of federal and state tax returns. The campaign also checked her credit.

think people are more comcerned about the fact that she had sex outside of marriage actually.

AprilOrit on September 2, 2008 at 2:26 AM

Sex outside of marriage….yeah that never happens….lol. she was ina commited relationship. she is going to marry the father. do you know when he proposed? It could have been before she was pregent. They could have been planning to get married and then got with child. you don’t know anything about the relationship between her and her fiancee. So until you do drop it. I’m sure not one person her had sex with their fiancee before they were married….

The age of consental sex in Alsaka is 16. that means that a woman at the age of 16 can get legally married. If she does the parents are no longer responsible for her actions.
So let me get this striagth a man can join up for the army at 17 without his parents permission and go and fight and possibly die for his country but a woman is not old enough to decide to have a baby?

sexism comes in all shades…

She’s not married and she hasn’t joined the military.

And she’s put her mother in an untenable position, and it puts the ticket in an untenable position. More ammunition to the loyal opposition. Not smart…

She quit the party and joined the rep. what part of that do you not understand. the parties ideas where not hers. Shedecided that was not a road she wanted to travel. So if I was a democrat and switch to a repub because the dems party was too left wing for me I should always be tarred as a democrat for the rest of my life…please…

I agree about the opposition, why arm them? Also it may matter to some of the older voters who have older ideas about some behavior. I could see some of those Hillary people or Reagan Dems who Mccain is trying to attract maybe taking issue. They are older, from a different generation with a different set of rules.

What a load of bilge some people push out!

“Ron Paul is cool!” is no endorsement; in fact, her whole statement is the antithesis of any endorsement of anyone.

As for McCain dumping Palin: McCain is no McGovern, a moral coward who didn’t vet his veep choice and ran like a rabbit when the first “bad” sign came up.

One reason I support McCain is a feeling that he is a man of integrity. He would no sooner abandon her than he would have taken early release from that POW camp.

Integrity. It seems to be a vanishing trait in America today. Certainly neither Osama Obama nor Biden have shown much of it in their “careers.” Neither have their apologists in the media and elsewhere.

So this is far right?

Platform of the American Independent Party
Introduction
We Acknowledge the Creator’s Gracious Gifts
The American Independent Party gratefully acknowledges God as the Creator of all and appeals to Him for help in protecting all He has graciously given us. With all these gifts comes the right to use them justly. Hence all such rights are the gifts of God as affirmed in our Declaration of Independence. These include the right to life and liberty.

Declaration of Independence Rights are God-Given
All rights are unalienable in that none have a right to take them unjustly. Liberty includes the pursuit of happiness, which is the possession and exercise of virtue. Liberty includes the right to use and claim as an individual possession any unclaimed thing received from the hand of God, in or upon or above the Earth. This right to any possession includes its entire use, that is, its exchange, control, protection, and entire disposition. And the first and greatest of these possessions is our life.

God-Given Duties to Individuals
God gave Man this earth to make of it a well-tended Garden, not to leave it an uninhabited wilderness. He gave us our lives—not to be lived to ourselves alone—but in love to one another. And the duty to love certainly includes the duty not to act hatefully towards others. Therefore, we have a duty to be at peace with each other. Our duty to love one another includes a duty to protect each other from unjust harm. We have further a duty to cooperate with each other in the fulfillment of these duties. Such duties are the basis for just government.

As the only creature made in God’s image and likeness, all men have an equal duty to love themselves and others to honor that image of the God they are commanded to love. To obliterate that image by unjustly taking a life is the highest crime that one may do to another. To take a life justly is the most somber obligation God ever imposes.

Our Constitution Enables Us to Protect Our Rights and Fulfill Our Duties
To secure and fulfill all God-given rights and duties, governments are instituted among men. To fulfill those duties and protect those rights, We the People of the United States of America ordained and established a Constitution for ourselves.

Rights and Duties of Association, Including that Forceful Association—Government
God created Man with two great dimensions, individual and social. In so doing He gave us the right to associate with each other to take advantage of our rights and to fulfill our duties. The right to associate includes the right to choose one’s associates, but does not include the right to force others to associate.

God has imposed on men a duty to associate in governments to put a justified fear into the hearts of evildoers. These duties are given for the good of all, but not to deprive any of the rights they are designed to protect! Governments should never commit the crimes they are created to prevent!

No association of men has any rights of itself, but only by reason of the rights contributed to it according to the covenant established among its members. That fundamental limit on associations includes the greatest and most forceful of all human associations—government. However, among all our rights we find those derived from our duties, for we all have a right to justly pursue our duties.

Therefore:

The Constitution: the Original Contract that America has with Itself
The American Independent Party is the party of ordered liberty in a nation under God. We believe in strict adherence to written law. We believe the Constitution is the contract America has with itself. Its willful distortion has led to the violation of our Tenth Amendment guaranteed right to limited government—which inevitably requires oppressive taxation. Its faithful application will lift that awful burden.

Freedom from “Liberalism”
Freed from the lawless oppression of Liberal rule, we may then compassionately and justly use our energy and ingenuity to provide for ourselves and our families. We will then establish truly free and responsible enterprise and reassert the basic human right to property.

The Protection of Life, and the Duties and Rights of Families
We believe in protecting all human life however weak, defenseless, or disheartened; we endorse the family as the essential bulwark of liberty, compassion, responsibility, and industry; and declare the family’s right and responsibility to nurture, discipline, and educate its children. We maintain that all humans are persons from the beginning of their biological development and especially deserve our love and nurture when they are weakest and most dependent.

Marriage Between a Man and a Woman
We insist that marriage is between a man and a woman and assert the role of the law in establishing and reinforcing the mutual rights and obligations of that God-ordained contract.

The Individual and Common Defense
We assert the absolute, concurrent Second Amendment guaranteed individual right to self defense against impositions by other citizens or our government, coupled with a strong common defense, a common defense which requires a national sovereignty not damaged by imprudent or un-Constitutional treaties.

Opposition to Illegal Immigration and Support of Secure Borders
We oppose all illegal immigration. We support secure borders and immigration policies inviting the best of the world to join us in freedom. We emphatically demand that our borders be protected against intrusions by that most straight-forward and practical means, a fence, reinforced by all the necessary manpower and electronic surveillance. We also insist that those who violate our immigration laws—be they illegal immigrants or their employers—be punished for their crime in a way that will deter them from future offenses.

Our Great Pro-Life Constitution
The Republic established by our Constitution is the greatest of all pro-life institutions. In the first place, it protects our lives from the impositions of foreign nations and internal disorder. Our Constitution in its Fifth Amendment also forbids the government to take life—or liberty or property—unjustly. The Fourteenth amendment requires all States to apply all the protections they provide for life equally to all visitors or citizens, and to all born or unborn persons within the territories governed by their laws.

Public Servants, Not Public Masters! All Governments Under God
We believe that all those who govern are the servants of God for the good of citizens. Therefore all governments are under God whether they like it or not! This is why we call those who rule in our nation, Public Servants. We will resist by all political means at our disposal the increasing inclination of our Public employees and representatives to become, ever more, Public Masters.

In consequence whereof, we call upon all men who value their God-given liberty to join us in pursuit of these political convictions.

That’s fine. But there is no evidence of Sarah wanting to secede. What there is [abundant] evidence of is her desiring to expand Alaska’s ability to develop it’s natural resources and provide domestic energy to the country. That’s her thing. Which is a-okay with me!

Wrong Party, ummm it’s The Alaska Independent Party.

Try #7:

To seek the complete repatriation of the public lands, held by the federal government, to the state and people of Alaska in conformance with Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17, of the federal constitution.

AprilOrit on September 2, 2008 at 2:47 AM

And # 12:

To affirm and assert every possible right-of-way established under R.S. 2477 of July 26, 1866, before its repeal by the Federal Land Management Policy Act of October 21, 1976.

AprilOrit on September 2, 2008 at 2:48 AM

To seek the complete repatriation of the public lands, held by the federal government, to the state and people of Alaska in conformance with Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17, of the federal constitution.

Again, where is the problem?

When the federal blanket comes off Alaskan soil, those areas can be drilled, or whatever else they want. That’s not secession by any measure.

To all those concerned over the child bearing of a 17 year old I want you to know the real enemy.

Protesters harassed two state delegations in St. Paul to attend the Republican National Convention Monday. Someone threw a rock through the window as delegates from Alabama rode their bus to the Xcel Energy Center, where RNC events took place. And masked protesters confronted and harassed the Connecticut delegation — several of them were spat upon, roughed up and doused with a mixture of water and bleach.

“Political parties, both Republican and Democrat, dominate from Washington, D.C., and [don't] quite understand the political problems, or opportunities, in an arctic and subarctic country.”

Walter J. Hickel

“I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I’ve got no use for America or her damned institutions.”

Joe Vogler

The platform of the AIP is, as one would expect, centered on Alaskan issues. Although it is widely thought to be a secessionist movement, the Party makes great effort to emphasize that its primary goal is merely a vote on secession, something that Party advocates say Alaskans were denied during the founding of the state. A plebiscite was, in fact, held in Alaska at the state’s inception in 1958, but AIP members argue that voting was corrupt and that residents were not given the proper choice between statehood, commonwealth status, or complete separation — something they say has been granted to other U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

They are in essence a 10th amendment group who is tired of the abuse of the “interstate commerce clause”(particularly funny in relation to Alaska and Hawaii since the vast majority of their sundries are ICC) to preclude them from utilizing their state’s assets to maximum benefit.

I’ll let the chairman of the AIP debunk your claim about AIP

She says it’s not accurate to describe the party as secessionist — they just want a vote, she says, adding that the members of the AIP hold different opinions on what Alaska should be.

She doesn’t know what Palin’s position was.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/members-of-frin.html

She joined in the same year the AIP’s convention was in Wasilla (go figure). She left two years later. Guess she wasn’t impressed.

Ronnie on September 2, 2008 at 3:01 AM

I don’t think she will lead a movement while serving as the VP, i was disturbed that at one time she toyed with this Party.

AprilOrit on September 2, 2008 at 3:01 AM

Thank God the MSM and the Donks nail their candidates this hard though eh?

There is a similar movement in Hawaii even as we type by the way….

so that makes 15% of our states that actively want out in at least part….

sven10077 on September 2, 2008 at 3:03 AM

They are in essence a 10th amendment group who is tired of the abuse of the “interstate commerce clause”(particularly funny in relation to Alaska and Hawaii since the vast majority of their sundries are ICC) to preclude them from utilizing their state’s assets to maximum benefit.

If you have a beef with someone “close” to the candidate damning American “institutions” that in essence lock Alaska away from her wealth I’d love to have you do this level of research on Jeremiah “Goddamn America she won’t give me a payday” Wright….

and April it is secession dear….

after Barry nukes our economy you can expect to see a lot more talk of it nationwide across regional enclaves.

sven10077 on September 2, 2008 at 3:01 AM

AprilOrit on September 2, 2008 at 3:01 AM

As pointed out above, 38% of Alaska did. That’s a huge percentage.

What I’m trying to point out is that what Sarah Palin is focused on is development of Alaskan resources. It is no shock whatsoever that she might spend some time in a party that is centralized on Alaskan priorities.

I know that like a scarlet letter, but I can’t list the planks of the republican party w/out looking. And I’m certain I wouldn’t agree with them all. It certainly doesn’t dictate my own views. For those, I prefer self-expression, so let’s take Sarah’s expression in like vein.

Wanting the option to get Puerto Rico’s deal and have some more control over your own resource exploitattion is hardly wanting to break off to “keep the slaves”.

Frankly I know this may well be hard for some who have not been up north to read, but Alaskans think it is pretty freakin’ pretentious for a bunch of granola munching moonbats down south the lock up her wealth in “national wildlife areas” to “protect” non-endangered endangered animals and/or maintain “pristine beauty” that is so pristine it is visited by less than 12 people a year.

You might even say they feel like a fiefdom….

if the Feds would give Alaskans oversight of what should be by rights their land this party would have all the moral voice of the CPUSA but a bunch of watermelons* will not let that happen.

Hmm. Let’s see Palin is going to get married. no unwed mother there. So the debate is still about unwed welfare mothers vs. family, marriage, two parent family. If you can’t see the difference I would suggest you stay out of the stock market. In fact if anything the argument is even stronger now. This is how conservatives handle the proble. they keep the baby, they get married, the entire family helps them. they do not get federal money, no do they get on the welfare doles, they certainly do not kill the unborn. The differenc between the left and right on how to handle this “curse” could not be clearer and only reinforces my vote.

Like cindy sheehan Gov Palin now has absolute moral athourity to talk about teenage pregency. Unlike Dan quale and Bush one. Gov Palin is walking the walk.

Anybody who hopes Palin is off the ticket in a week is NOT a McCain supporter.

Loxodonta on September 2, 2008 at 1:25 AM

I am not a McCain supporter. More and more I see McCain himself as the Bridge to Nowhere

As much as people here are certain how Palin will play out, I am not hearing great responses like I am seeing on HotAir. A co-worker who is a Hillary supporter had decided to vote McCain. That would have been her first Republican vote.

I asked here about Palin. She was disgusted. I asked how she will vote. She said she can’t vote Obama and now she won’t vote McCain. She could not see any comparison between Hillary and Palin. She considers Hillary to have a depth the national scene and Palin just a beginner.

If I leave out the hard core Obama suppoerters I deal with, I am finding no buzz about Palin. Just raised eyebrows or head shaking. Like: This is It?

Yep, some people are opening their wallets. Meanwhile, she was for it before she was against it. Shades of lieberman.

It was painful to watch Lieberman follow Gore’s lead in that campaign. I like Lieberman. I am certain he would not steal towels or silverware if he stayed at my home. Yet, he became a reed in the wind generated by Gore. No wonder McCain wanted him for his VP.

I don’t know Palin enough to feel anything as she modulates her beliefs to suit McCain, but I know McCain well enough to know he doesn’t like people who don’t like his ideas

McCain had to string along the other candidates until just before the convention or someone might have vetted his choice in greater detail than he did.

Now, while the other candidates for VP have been scoured clean, the convention and platform become nil, as the only energy will be the grinding sound of the press in its excited hunt to dig out the dust on Palin. While McCain bats away the zingers, the negatives will build

Palin could become an underdog and America’s sweetheart, but she could as easily become smaller and smaller and smaller

That is why I find it so easy to dislike McCain. He looks ready to kick the bucket. That means his VP choice must be confidence building. The focus on Obama’s vague dossier has been overshadowed by the Lady’s lack of dossier.

The MSM has been handed a hammer to use on public opinion. They will take apart McCain’s timing and verify every single step of the so called vetting. If the vetting is sloppy, McCain will look like a fool

My Nana is in love with John McCain. To her he can do no wrong, plus I think she may find him attractive.

Your disrespect for old people, and your spreading of the “kick the bucket” meme, demonstrates a lack of basic morality and decency.

Sometimes, it seems that it is not just infanticide that is being supported, but that we old people should also “rest in peace” as soon as possible. It’s disgusting. It’s almost like a death cult.
