Reports: McCain camp only starting to fully vet Palin now? Update: 25 people vetted her, says Team McCain

True or not? I’ll give you the “facts” as I’ve collected them and let you decide for yourself.
1. A guy named Andrew Halcro claimed this morning that eight people from Team McCain are checked into the local hotel in Wasilla and are poring through records. Who’s Halcro? He’s the independent who lost the gubernatorial race to her two years ago, and who was quoted sneering at her inability to articulate coherent policies in this weekend’s NYT. Not worth believing, right?
2. Wrong. ABC and NBC are also reporting that McCain’s people are on their way up there to try to beat the press to any hidden dirt.
3. Marc Ambinder claims to know from sources inside the McCain campaign that they’ve already been blindsided by the fact that she requested earmarks as mayor of Wasilla, that she supports a windfall profits tax, and that she doesn’t believe in man-made global warming. I’m skeptical about the last two; her positions are easily researchable on Google, as is the fact that she initially supported the bridge to nowhere. But like I asked this morning, if they knew about the bridge reversal, why’d they let her tout it on Friday knowing that it’d end up being gotcha’d?
4. Rick Davis, McCain’s campaign manager, told WaPo this weekend that none of the final VP contenders were vetted more or less than the others and that all of them were subjected to a records review and FBI background check. Minor problem: The FBI says it didn’t do a background check on Palin (or on any other candidate, for that matter). Maybe Davis meant a background check equivalent to what the FBI routinely does for government employees?
5. Mark Halperin’s asking a lot of unanswered questions here that make it sound like he already knows, or has reason to know, the answer to each one is “no.”
Maybe McCain does know all the dirt already, like he apparently knew about Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy, and simply decided the upside was worth the risk. Or maybe he decided that since he was gambling the election by picking someone so inexperienced anyway, they might as well cut corners on the vetting on the assumption that there’s only so much trouble a hockey mom could have gotten herself into. I don’t think the public is so process-oriented that they’ll draw any sharp conclusions about his judgment in not fully vetting her; I think the risk is that she’ll die a death of a thousand cuts as the media exposes and then inflates a bunch of exceedingly venial sins (the Troopergate investigation being a notable exception), incorporating them into a larger narrative about how America can’t take a chance on a VP who might have outstanding parking tickets that no one even knows about. The point, in other words, isn’t to prove that she’s evil or corrupt, which she almost certainly isn’t; it’s simply to grasp at all available straws, no matter how short, and bundle them together in an “unknown quantity” narrative so that she’s perpetually on the defensive about such important matters as why she didn’t oppose the bridge to nowhere early enough. It’s the best possible contrast for Biden, too. Love him or loathe him, he’s been in D.C. since the Mesozoic Era. WYSIWYG. But Sarah Palin — did you know she served on the board of a 527 for Ted Stevens three years ago? Why, I’ll bet Joe Biden’s never even spoken to Ted Stevens.
Here’s the newest tidbit, straight out of the chute from ABC about a party Palin quit 12 years ago. Expect to hear the name “Robert Byrd” invoked tomorrow in the context of youthful political indiscretions subsequently forgiven by our progressive superiors. Exit question: Assuming, hypothetically, that I wanted to stop sniffing glue, this would be the wrong week for it, no?
Update: Politico puts it in perspective. The “ordinary gal” forcefield is a powerful shield indeed:
“Authenticity is the most important characteristic for someone seeking public office,” said Nick Ayers, executive director of the Republican Governors Association. “Any news that comes out about her is not going to hurt her because it reinforces the point that she is authentically one of us.”…
Even the governor’s own Troopergate scandal, in which Palin is alleged to have exerted undue pressure to fire a state trooper, is suffused with an element that many families can identify with: one sister stepping in on behalf of another in an acrimonious dispute with a brother-in-law.
Powerful media organizations are beginning to pour resources into this story, so much more damaging twists and turns may await. But assuming the accusations don’t grow more serious, it is of a considerably different nature as an abuse of power than the last Troopergate scandal to rock the political world — the one in which Bill Clinton was alleged to use his state troopers in Arkansas to procure women as sex partners. That wouldn’t excuse Palin’s actions, of course, but it would frame them in such a way that could limit the political damage.
Update: Team Maverick tries to soothe a jumpy blogger’s fraying nerves.
Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser, said the campaign always planned to send a “jump team” to the eventual running mate’s home state to work with the nominee’s staff, help with information requests from local and national reporters, and answer questions about documents that were part of the review.
Culvahouse said Palin’s review, like others, began with a team of two dozen people culling information from public sources. The team reviewed speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces, for a number of potential running mates.
For Palin specifically, the team studied online archives of the state’s largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News, but didn’t request paper archives for Palin’s hometown newspaper for fear the secret review would become public…
Palin then was sent a personal data questionnaire with 70 “very intrusive” questions, Culvahouse said. She also was asked to submit a number of years of federal and state tax returns. The campaign also checked her credit.

Hey, I am with you there. I don’t like to lose either. Just ask my softball and walleyball teammates.
But to use your reference of the 2006 mid-terms, I went around trying to convince people to vote for the GOP, not because they were good, but because the Democrats were going to, in so many words, destroy the country (what with them wanting to withdraw from Iraq, impeach the President, etc). I told people they had better vote the GOP or else we are doomed.
But guess what happened. We lost. The Democrats won. We didn’t withdraw. The President isn’t impeached and the country isn’t destroyed. I learned a good lesson back then. The country is not doomed no matter who wins. Just as we are not doomed now if Obama wins. In big trouble for certain, but we will recover.
But I have to say that I cannot go around in my circle and continue telling people to vote GOP or Obama is going to destroy this country. Not gonna work. Because they already see the Democrats didn’t destroy the country the last 2 years.
With Palin on the ticket, the reasoning has not changed at all. We are still looking at the lesser of two evils. People here haven’t changed their arguments for McCain at all. They are still saying “vote McCain or Obama will destroy us!!!” Well, I’m sorry, that’s not going to work. No one believes that. And I certainly do not either.
Do I want to win? Of course. But I also am not going to go all AllahPundit and get all despressed and worried about the election or go all Palin-mania either and consider her the heroine of the day and the best politician in the nation since… Reagan or the world since Magaret Thatcher.
An interesting thought experiment: on Friday afternoon, how many people could honestly say they knew anything of Sarah Palin’s policy positions on anything other than drilling in ANWR. I would bet not too many people who are worshiping her without reservation right now knew much more than that. We should not be treating our politicians like that, no matter who they are.

Every child is different. Some respond well to a great deal of control, and some will do everything they can to escape it. The fact that this happened does not necessarily indicate some failure of parenting on behalf of the Palins.
My uncle and his wife raised a Catholic family of ten children, and he was extremely controlling, strict, and pounded the morals lessons. Most of the kids were okay, but one became pregnant at 16 and another became a drug user. Conversely, neither of those things happened in my family – but we had a great deal of freedom. The iron fist doesn’t always get the desired results.

I love George Bush. I am glad he won in 2000. I am sure McCain was angry about losing the primary. So was Romney. But do you think Romney would want to see Obama win just to spite McCain? I don’t.
And I will tell you this, if McCain loses. Bush gets blamed. It is that simple. Fair or not.

No 12-sided dice in my pocket. Ron Paul wishes he had this much coherency among his constituency. Also, thanks for the projection. Sour grapes is the proud sponsor of the RNC. McCain has guzzled gallons of it in his ascension to the White House.

Kids rut….I’ll spare you the details of my own past but let’s just say I started younger and but for luck, planning, and the grace of God there go I and my wife(whom I’ve loved since I was 12)
Yeah Sarah or Todd lynching her and or her boyfriend sure would solve a lot eh?
This is the 21st century and for all we know the kids planned it and Sarah is stuck either disowning the grandchild or softening the landing.
Not my lookout. The kids are getting married and frankly the child will grow up in a good powerful family.
No, it is not.
The message is that if you create life you are faced with some choices and ALL of them are pretty profound so don’t make goalposts with your legs or thrust until you are prepared to deal with the aftermath. In the event of a blessed event follow your sonscience and as a family close ranks and either welcome a new life or aid the abortive mother through the physical and psychological trauma of the invasive surgery and or pill.
This is in the end much ado about little and if anything teaches the most mature character lesson on the topic I can imagine.
Hell a decent press a fair press would let Sarah and Bristol do an at-length interview on it.
I know I’d watch.
sven10077 on September 1, 2008 at 10:04 PM
Stop trying to make Bristol sound like a 12 year old. She’s 17 years old, the father of her child is 18. Both are past the age of consent, they can marry without their parents’ permission. And they can have a baby without it, too. I think it’s clear that the Governor has set a very appropriate course for “conduct and behavior”. Her daughter was open with her parents, told them the situation, made her own decision about having the baby and getting married. Sounds like a fairly responsible person to me. But keep that key to YOUR daughter’s chastity belt safely hidden now.

Unless you are under the age of 25, you have no grounds to make such a judgment. Times have changed! Parents do not beat the crap out of kids anymore when they make mistakes, and most kids do not live in fear of such a beating. We do the best we can to transmit our values and let our children make their own decisions.
News flash: Teenagers have sex! Lots of it! And sometimes they don’t use birth control! And sometimes they even lie to their parents about it!
Another news flash: Young girls today are becoming more interested in having children, and doing it early. My 11-year-old recently told me she wants to be married when she is 19 and have 10 children. I have no idea where this comes from. I have a niece who eloped at 19 and her sister got pregnant and married at 18. They were extremely happy young mothers and both have three beautiful children.
For all you know, Bristol Palin may be in love with her boyfriend and have every intention of spending the rest of her life with him happily married. They may have had sex knowing full well that a baby might happen and ready to have it. And they may have a happy and long marriage with lots more children to come.
Just because it isn’t YOUR norm does not give you the right to judge others.

No, Romney would not want to see it, just as I don’t want to see it. But I’m not discussing in this thread with DU’ers (hopefully). This is in-house back and forth. What I want is for people to calm down so we can get down to real business. We can’t trump Obama’s celebrity. He’s smart enough to figure that out. He’s also smart enough to figure out our ticket’s weakness on economics. We need to shore up the things that matter.
Cold Steel on September 1, 2008 at 10:07 PM
I won’t say that I knew a lot about her, but I was mentioning her to my father as a possible VP pick over a month ago, and first heard of her back in 2007 when a writer for The Weekly Standard did a write up on her for their webpage.
I’ll admit that I’ve heard a bit more since Friday, and the policy items I have heard have impressed me, even though as VP she’s probably not going to be the major architect of any policy. taht will be McCain and his advisors first, with Palin being just one of the advisors unless McCain dies, which I don’t believe it going to happen.
I’ll admit I get very upset with a lot of the attack-dog politics we see now. I do want to know about policy questions, or questionable associations, but none of the negative stuff pulled out abuot Palin has had any substance, and I’m very sick of the negativity.
This is especially true after the huge uptick in the connection the base had with the campaign. If McCain is going to win, he needs the base energized, and Palin’s selection managed it. Pawlenty wouldn’t have. Romney would have probably increased the disenchantment. I don’t think Palin is perfect (but who is.) but she is a great pick for an election where the GOP really doesn’t have much going for it. Rather than be like Allah and keep pulling out negative after negative and claim that he’s trying to “vet” Palin, I’d like to see more posts about the positives, such as McCain turning Gustav’s landfall into an opportunity to show that the GOP puts country first.

Half the people in the country do not know that the Democrats control the Congress, so it does not surprise me that they do not know Palin’s positions on a lot issues. But I think a lot of people have liked what they have seen thus far.
I am not saying that Obama will destroy the country. A small nuclear device would not do that. But he will change it for the worse. That I do believe. But if we base our races on the belief that the other guy will ruin the US, then we will never win. Most people won’t believe that. We have to convince them that we can do a better job. Nothing miraculous.

I knew more about her than I knew about the other VP candidates. I knew what she looked like, what her political background was, how many kids she had, and everything that was available on the trooper thing that could be easily found. I’ve learned a lot more since then.
The reason I knew as much as I did was because we’ve been discussing her here and in other right blogs for a while now. She’s also the only VP candidate that I got excited about during the run-up. I didn’t think she’d get picked because Alaska is too far away and she wasn’t well-enough known, but she was my pick for all that. I figured the best we’d get was Romney. Not a bad pick at all but plenty of built-in criticism. Imagine my surprise when it was Palin.

Needless to say, I enjoy the left being beat about the head by conservatives!

When is this scrutiny by conservative pundits going to be placed on the demofascist vp pick and presidential candidate as well? When are conservatives going to start getting concerned with barry’s backgound? The demofascists are very good a nitpicking conservatives, killing with a thousand cuts, and conservatives just go along. barry is corrupt, lying, racist, biden is corrupt, lying moron and it’s a scandal that Palin hasn’t swallowed the global warming kool aid? Why do conservatives always play by leftists rules? No digging into their candidates backgrounds, no fair and open campaign debates. Can’t talk about barry’s leftist freinds. How come no one is talking about the fact barry doesn’t seem to ever have had a girlfreing before michelle? Where is his high school or college sweetheart? Where the hell are his best freinds? Drinking buddies? Go to a ball game buddies? mccain picks an actual, real deal American for a vp and conservatives jump on the wagon to try to rip her to pieces yet stay away from digging for any answers about the demofascists manchurian candidate. Boy am I pissed off.

In 1992 the Republicans took Congress with a promise to stop Clinton’s liberalism and end Congressional corruption. They did very good for a while. But then, it seems that a lot of Republicans decided that they wanted their own piece of the Federal pie.
So, in 2006, the Democrats ran to end the Congressional corruption. And now we have a Congress even more liberal than at the start of th Clinton administration, and with more pork spending and corruption than the Republicans at their worst.
I hope there are more, but right now I know of only two people running for federal offices that have a record of successfully combating corruption in general, including in their own party. That’s John McCain and Sarah Palin.
I wish there were more like them. We need more like them.

And those on the left who think this will cause conservative Christians to vote for Obama need to take another hit on that bong because they have no idea what REAL Christians think and believe.
At the core of Christian faith (and we’re not the only ones) is love, faith, forgiveness and redemption.

Something very interesting occurred today. I was listening to Bill O’Reilly’s show and he had Dick Morris on. Regardless of what you think of those two, what I found profound was the level of excitement from Morris over Sarah Palin. The words and tone that he used gave me the impression he was simply ecstatic over her being the GOP VP (or simply put on a presidential ticket). He thinks she is quite qualified for the position of VP, thinks her in-experience is a big plus which will work in her favor (I think as part of the maverick theme).
Morris went on to say that he met Palin on an Alaskan cruiz. He didn’t end up getting into the details of his discussion with the governor, but I was just amazed at how excited the likes of a Democratic Strategist as Morris is to be so fired up for Palin.
Don’t read into this that Morris’ excitement over Palin is a plus or a minus in the discussion over Palin’s overall qualifications. All I’m simply saying is Morris was overly-thrilled and was very energetic and thorough in his defending her as an excellent pick.
I like Palin so far, but I hold most of my judgment for how she delivers Wednesday night.

look I don’t know if it was because I was a Condi man the whole time and had my hopes dashed or what but this hyper-partisanship for candidates in some is charming and destructive.

I can infer that by your posts. My wife just says that I’m an absolutist, and here I’ve also been referred to as an elitist. I’m trying to start a new movement called absoletist. It involves riding high, white stallions and demanding perfection from all my candidates.

I think that it’s a mistake for her to have not gotten married first, but a small one and, furthermore, none of my busienss. I do respect you views on that subject though rockmom.

Am I the only one repulsed that the media is digging deeper on the Republican VICE president than they are on the Democrat PRESIDENT candidates?
This sickens me to no end and the media is well over the line of bias here. Whether or not and to what extent McCain “vetted” his vp is an internal GOP issue and for voters to decide and these liberal scum in the press slinging all this mud are so far out of line I am reading to hit the phones tomorrow and let loose.
ikez78 on September 1, 2008 at 10:32 PM
I don’t think one needs to be a ‘total fundamentalist’ to think that perhaps that wasn’t the wisest behavior they could have been engaged in. Having a baby completely changes one’s life. Most especially in that a parent has to put their children first. That means things like going to college becomes problematic and difficult (but not impossible).
That said, if she loves her husband and he loves her, then none of this matters at all.
Religious_Zealot on September 1, 2008 at 10:32 PM
He mentioned DailyKos, which, according to O’R is the worst, most vile website out there. (I happen to agree that it is among the most vile on the left, in equal par with racial hate groups.) He tore into the D.K. for permitting the advancement of the Preggo-Gate garbage. He laid into all those Democratic polticians who went to the Kos convention last year and how the Dems need to stop placating to the likes of Kos.
In essence, he thought the whole story over Palin hiding her daughter’s pregnancy is among the lowest things that have ever happened in a presidential race in history. I understand what he means, but I’m sure it’s been the worst. I would agree it is among the worst.
He did, however, think that the related story of her 17 year old daughter actually being pregnant was news worthy, but not related to the above at all.
Weebork on September 1, 2008 at 10:33 PM
How come no one on cnn has pointed out that since barry’s daddy was already married then the marriage to his mother was fraudulent. barry was a bastard just like the last demofasist president, clinton.
cnn, leftists in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

William Amos on September 1, 2008 at 9:59 PM
One little problem with your Mitt Bashing today William.
Mitt Romney did not want to be VP and is not at all disappointed he is not. He also does not want and will not accept any cabinet positions.
How about giving the guy who is spending his own money and his own time on McCain and Palin’s behalf a break from the sniping?
Elizabetty on September 1, 2008 at 10:35 PM

Can you imagine the Sour Mash/Youkon Jack Victory Party at the White House if McCain/Palin wins?
Seven Percent Solution on September 1, 2008 at 10:36 PM
Then it is between them and God Enos. Because Deists (and I am a borderline one myself) believe in god the clockmaker. What the Palins do is there business as long as it does no more harm because that fufills natural law.
It’ll be ok….young women have been having babies for about 90,000 years or so.
sven10077 on September 1, 2008 at 10:38 PM
Just like the olden days, say 40-50 years ago, eh? And teenage girls and boys had sex then too. A whole lot of us are products of that behavior (Mom not having the choice of aborting us back then) so maybe that’s why we’re more sympathetic to Bristol and Levi.
Bennett on September 1, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Im not blaming Mitt but some of his backers have been really obnoxious lately.
William Amos on September 1, 2008 at 10:38 PM
I get what you’re saying, and I agree that we should condemn someone. I do think it was unwise for her to get pregnant because of all the responsibilities that come with raising a baby. Responsibilities like being able to afford to raise the child, arguments like that.
Regardless of the above, however, what’s done is done and what’s more important than her faults is where she goes from here. She has decided to keep the baby, which is good. Not only that, but she plans to marry the father of the baby, a double-plus! People screw up, it’s natural, I agree. For me, it’s the ability to handle the responsibility of your mistakes which will determine how your actions should be judged.
Weebork on September 1, 2008 at 10:38 PM
Correction.
I said: “I get what you’re saying, and I agree that we should condemn someone.”
Should read:
“…and I agree that we shouldn’t condemn someone.”

Hey! Where are all the morons who demand we support McCain no questions asked when this stuff comes up about Palin? I’d expect idiots like Wise_Men to be out there pounding us to vote McCain now in the same way that particular idiot suggested any criticism of McCain equated into crimes against humanity. But there is nothing but silence. Why is that?
highhopes on September 1, 2008 at 10:41 PM
So, you don’t see a problem with the behavior of her child and then lose all ability and credibility when it comes to talking about setting examples for underage children to follow and they kind of parenting skills necessary to instill such values?
Wow, what have we here? Repubs, and maybe some conservatives, unconcerned and seemingly dismissive about the behavior of a child of a politician who is supposed to represent “conservative family values”.
Impressive indeed is your stance…

Cold Steel on September 1, 2008 at 10:44 PM
I agree with your assessment. I would add that it seems to be a little bit more than simply being a disgruntled Romney supporter. The complaints are turning, for the lack of a better example (and completely ironic), into the types of drivel we heard from Huckabee supporters at Romney.
Weebork on September 1, 2008 at 10:44 PM
I was a Romney supporter.
I don’t see him as liking this sort of thing at all, nor what his alleged fans are doing now.
I like this woman.
I thought and I still think it is a brilliant choice.
Noelie on September 1, 2008 at 10:47 PM
The problem here isn’t about the example Sarah set (married 20 years, no divorce, no separation, 5 kids).
The problem here is that her child didn’t FOLLOW the example that was set for her.
Although, in a very real way she is – she’s marrying the father and keeping the kid.

Yes because those enthralled in Palin rapture are so much more enlightened than us Mittbots and Huckabites. I seem to remember several thousand posts referring to Mitt Reagan, Mitt Jordan, Mitt Woods, MittFK. Oh, wait a minute…those were all about Palin, and they all occurred within the last freaking 3 days. Don’t confuse reservation with marginalization. That is of course, unless you keep throwing rocks.
Cold Steel on September 1, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Ah yes Enos – a moderate-independent-undecided even in spiritual matters.
Somehow this all adds up now…….
FiveWays on September 1, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Cute. We’re talking about the politics of here and now. And were talking about, appropriately, young people getting knocked up and really screwing up their lives — not to mention the lives of those children. Young, out-of-wedlock births is a huge problem in America, and it’s now another issue that cannot be addressed by McCain/Palin because of her daughter’s choice to have sex and show an absolute lack of respect for herslf and her parents.
You want conservative values yet you don’t think the offspring of the politician who esposes such should exhibit some level of decent behavior?
You guys are killing me. Un-be-lievable.
eanax on September 1, 2008 at 10:49 PM
So seeing as you and the other liberals look the other way for men playing around on their wives, just what are you “suggesting”?
In your wonderful warm generous spirit, can you LOOK me in the eye and tell me you haven’t made mistakes no matter what wiser people than you told you to do?
I find YOUR hypocrisy so blatant it takes my breath away.
Where is your much vaunted understanding of the human condition?
Bristol Palin is 17 years old. What is the Latest Liberal Adulterer Edwards excuse and tell me how many lashes have you given him, since stoning this family seems to be the only thing good enough for the likes of you?
Noelie on September 1, 2008 at 10:50 PM
I have a problem with high moral dudgeon about someone else’s family situation. Governor Palin isn’t running to be pastor-in-chief. I’ve seen nothing about her time in office that shows she has spent a great deal of time trying to set a personal morality agenda. She has a situation in her own family, she’s acknowledged it and so far there is nothing here that isn’t dealt with by millions of American families throughout the country. And again, please stop with the minor/underage child as if Bristol were in elementary school. It weakens your otherwise already sketchy argument.

Cold Steel on September 1, 2008 at 10:52 PM
Sarah has 2 choices….
1) disopwn the kid/force an abortion/force the child to be abandoned to the state
2) support her daughter keeping said grandchild
the rest is noise….
by the way nice Yoda impersonation there on the end Enos I have one….
“do or do not there is no try”
Sarah is facing what is and doing not trying to magically erase the event and make everything back to “what it should be”…..
I’m with SARAH!
sven10077 on September 1, 2008 at 10:52 PM
Ok, so to follow you here, what should Palin do regarding her pregnant teenager? You make the case she has made a grave error. Should she remove herself from the GOP VP elect? Should she resign as governor? What should she do regarding her daughter?
I agree that her daughter screwed up. Now what?
Weebork on September 1, 2008 at 10:52 PM
The only UN BE LIEV ABLE Hypocrite is you!
What we suggest is that you knock it off and stop making this something about the campaign.
I am telling you, that this will have worse impact for you if you continue on in your quest to pin scarlet A’s anywhere, when out of wedlock babies are not exactly your problem when it is older, should know better, Political liberal men.
