Reports: McCain camp only starting to fully vet Palin now? Update: 25 people vetted her, says Team McCain

True or not? I’ll give you the “facts” as I’ve collected them and let you decide for yourself.
1. A guy named Andrew Halcro claimed this morning that eight people from Team McCain are checked into the local hotel in Wasilla and are poring through records. Who’s Halcro? He’s the independent who lost the gubernatorial race to her two years ago, and who was quoted sneering at her inability to articulate coherent policies in this weekend’s NYT. Not worth believing, right?
2. Wrong. ABC and NBC are also reporting that McCain’s people are on their way up there to try to beat the press to any hidden dirt.
3. Marc Ambinder claims to know from sources inside the McCain campaign that they’ve already been blindsided by the fact that she requested earmarks as mayor of Wasilla, that she supports a windfall profits tax, and that she doesn’t believe in man-made global warming. I’m skeptical about the last two; her positions are easily researchable on Google, as is the fact that she initially supported the bridge to nowhere. But like I asked this morning, if they knew about the bridge reversal, why’d they let her tout it on Friday knowing that it’d end up being gotcha’d?
4. Rick Davis, McCain’s campaign manager, told WaPo this weekend that none of the final VP contenders were vetted more or less than the others and that all of them were subjected to a records review and FBI background check. Minor problem: The FBI says it didn’t do a background check on Palin (or on any other candidate, for that matter). Maybe Davis meant a background check equivalent to what the FBI routinely does for government employees?
5. Mark Halperin’s asking a lot of unanswered questions here that make it sound like he already knows, or has reason to know, the answer to each one is “no.”
Maybe McCain does know all the dirt already, like he apparently knew about Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy, and simply decided the upside was worth the risk. Or maybe he decided that since he was gambling the election by picking someone so inexperienced anyway, they might as well cut corners on the vetting on the assumption that there’s only so much trouble a hockey mom could have gotten herself into. I don’t think the public is so process-oriented that they’ll draw any sharp conclusions about his judgment in not fully vetting her; I think the risk is that she’ll die a death of a thousand cuts as the media exposes and then inflates a bunch of exceedingly venial sins (the Troopergate investigation being a notable exception), incorporating them into a larger narrative about how America can’t take a chance on a VP who might have outstanding parking tickets that no one even knows about. The point, in other words, isn’t to prove that she’s evil or corrupt, which she almost certainly isn’t; it’s simply to grasp at all available straws, no matter how short, and bundle them together in an “unknown quantity” narrative so that she’s perpetually on the defensive about such important matters as why she didn’t oppose the bridge to nowhere early enough. It’s the best possible contrast for Biden, too. Love him or loathe him, he’s been in D.C. since the Mesozoic Era. WYSIWYG. But Sarah Palin — did you know she served on the board of a 527 for Ted Stevens three years ago? Why, I’ll bet Joe Biden’s never even spoken to Ted Stevens.
Here’s the newest tidbit, straight out of the chute from ABC about a party Palin quit 12 years ago. Expect to hear the name “Robert Byrd” invoked tomorrow in the context of youthful political indiscretions subsequently forgiven by our progressive superiors. Exit question: Assuming, hypothetically, that I wanted to stop sniffing glue, this would be the wrong week for it, no?
Update: Politico puts it in perspective. The “ordinary gal” forcefield is a powerful shield indeed:
“Authenticity is the most important characteristic for someone seeking public office,” said Nick Ayers, executive director of the Republican Governors Association. “Any news that comes out about her is not going to hurt her because it reinforces the point that she is authentically one of us.”…
Even the governor’s own Troopergate scandal, in which Palin is alleged to have exerted undue pressure to fire a state trooper, is suffused with an element that many families can identify with: one sister stepping in on behalf of another in an acrimonious dispute with a brother-in-law.
Powerful media organizations are beginning to pour resources into this story, so much more damaging twists and turns may await. But assuming the accusations don’t grow more serious, it is of a considerably different nature as an abuse of power than the last Troopergate scandal to rock the political world — the one in which Bill Clinton was alleged to use his state troopers in Arkansas to procure women as sex partners. That wouldn’t excuse Palin’s actions, of course, but it would frame them in such a way that could limit the political damage.
Update: Team Maverick tries to soothe a jumpy blogger’s fraying nerves.
Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser, said the campaign always planned to send a “jump team” to the eventual running mate’s home state to work with the nominee’s staff, help with information requests from local and national reporters, and answer questions about documents that were part of the review.
Culvahouse said Palin’s review, like others, began with a team of two dozen people culling information from public sources. The team reviewed speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces, for a number of potential running mates.
For Palin specifically, the team studied online archives of the state’s largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News, but didn’t request paper archives for Palin’s hometown newspaper for fear the secret review would become public…
Palin then was sent a personal data questionnaire with 70 “very intrusive” questions, Culvahouse said. She also was asked to submit a number of years of federal and state tax returns. The campaign also checked her credit.

She appeared at their last convention (video recording), and the guy who runs the party says that not only did she used to be a member, but that she still largely agrees with them. You’ve got it backwards – I hope that there is no chance that someone with such nutty connections ever gets this close to national office. If she had nothing to do with them, I’d breathe a sigh of relief. The fact that she probably does strikes me as a problem, and apparently it’s one that the McCain campaign didn’t see coming.

Guys, if we’re already chanting “doom and gloom” over this, then we have already lost this election. Since we don’t really know what went on in the McCain HQ and the media is doing everything in it’s power to take down Sarah Palin, then we’d be better off hunkering down and sticking to finding facts – not howling for the end.
It’s not over till the fat lady sings.

Dick Morris (I know, I know) had the right strategy: Feed the press or they’ll find something to eat. And it’s usually you.
The campaign needs to get out and promote the Palin narrative. This convention should almost exclusively be used to do that. Forget McCain; the public knows who he is.
Sell Palin.
The problem is that since she is a maverick and outsider, there are no groups outside of Alaska to promote her. To vouche for her.
Where are the Palinistas?
SteveMG on September 1, 2008 at 8:57 PM
The fact that the Left has already slammed their bus into the Palin wall means no matter what turns up, she’s a major net positive unless it turn out she was mentored by a radical racist communist who was forced to leave the mainland, attended a racist church for 20 years or launched her career in the home of an unrepentant terrorist who’s group killed police officers, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Its worse Im angry at the neanderthals in our party who would let a male GOPer slide on these issues yet slam Palin for them.
Honestly we are treating Sarah the same way Obama’s people treated Hillary.
Huck’s son got in touble for killing a dog. Mitt said the best way his sons could serve America was to work for his campaign not military service.
Yet for some in are party the problem is Sarah doesnt have that same problem.
Those with blinders on in our party need to take them off.

This is why blogging will never amount to more than an echo chamber/circle jerk (take yr. pick), and will certainly never succeed the so-called MSM. Blog readers tend to want the circle jerk over the disquieting facts. Poor Allah. His journalistic pretensions founder on the jagged and unforgiving rocks of rah-rah partisanship.

If Allah isn’t fired for his incessant bashing of Palin because he’s having a hissy fit that his prefered choice for VP didn’t get selected, I’m going to stop visiting Hotair. One post, maybe two would have been ok, but he’s over 5 now and all have been as negative as possible.
When did we have a bloody liberal, nutroot posting on what used to be a reliably conservative site. Get rid of him, most of his posts this weekend have been thinly veiled attacks on Palin because he wanted someone else selected and he’s willing to hurt the GOP to prove himself right.
mvargus on September 1, 2008 at 8:57 PM
I’ll admit I started to get worried yesterday amidst all the mud-slinging and drudge the left is throwing in this all out assault on Mrs. Palin and her family. I don’t know what McCain was thinking if he didn’t vet her, but I’ll say this: I hope Mrs. Palin weathers through all this and makes it to election day.
If she’s still on the ticket, I’ll vote for him. If he bumps her for someone else, I’ll be staying home and likely reconsidering my membership to this party.
If they thought this was going to be a walk in the park, they were seriously mistaken; the kook left is in an all out and full force assault, kill or be killed, mode. They’re not going to stop at anything to win.

I am disgusted by the Obama-worship of the Left and have been for months now. I am also getting pretty disgusted by the Palin-worship now on the right. I am over Fred Thompson losing the Primary. I understand he did not run a very good campaign and deserved to lose. But my 2nd choice in this campaign was “anybody but McCain”. Taking a 1980s Ronald Reagan as his VP would not have made McCain any better in my eyes. He’s still at the top of the ticket and I am not about to just “get over” that.
With Palin, I was considering going from probably not voting for President to “holding my nose” and voting McCain-Palin. But now, after the last 4 days of reading people go Chris Matthews over Palin and consider anyone who brings up the slightest critcism of her as being a troll or out of the conservative movement or whatever other personal insult they can throw around… it has stopped me short and it is making me think twice if I want to continue being a part of a group of people who think this way. The right has become like the left when it comes to Palin.
This was happening at Ace of Spades as well with their war with NRO. JackStraw and DrewM and Ace noticed the ridiculous Palinmania and were trying to calm people down and talk some sense into them, to no avail.
It’s really sad to see. And now to see people trashing AllahPundit all over Sarah Palin. Just plain ridiculous what has become of this campaign.
As I have said many times, I really like Sarah Palin. But I am not one to consider a politician someone to worship or support 100% without reservation. I believe she was the best choice for McCain, however that does not mean that we should support her and McCain without reservation. The best thing about the conservative side of politics used to be that we could all discuss differences in opinion and policy and issues.

Not trying to be harsh but those are the choices as we have them. The next administration will either be McCain or O’bama…Veeps are as meaningful as bumps on my foot unless the horrid happens.
Palin was a bone to bring social conservative 2d amendment types home….it worked I maxed my donation budget for the week that I had had yet to send a dime of.
We need to groom the future of the party, better to do that from victory than when we are running around trying to forestall Barry’s “vision”.

Makes it easier to understand Obama supporters who mindlessly reject all the evidence of his radicalism and dangerous potential.
Let’s just get through the convention, and enjoy our temporary intoxication. Righties will end up with their feet on the ground.
The problem the Obama campaign is going to have is that the nutroots came out with such atrocious slime, before the campaign had a chance to craft a more sophisticated attack. I think the American people are feeling mighty protective right now, and the Obama bunch is going to have to tread mighty carefully.

I’m just sick of Allahpundit going out of his way to do the liberal’s research, especially since most of it has been far more benign than harmful, but he writes them up to be extremely negative.
Honestly, in today’s age the chance of a politican being 100% clean is approaching zero. There are too many ways to find information, and anything as little as a ticket for jaywalking will come out and suddenly be the reason the sky if falling about a candidate. The only way to avoid it would be to have TV camera’s following you 24/7 from the time you are 10, and who wants to live like that.
And most of the complaints Allah are stupid. Yes, they are almost certainly going to be played by the drive-by media, but who will they effect? Conservatives are unlikely to be swayed, they are going to vote more on her politics than if her husband got a DUI ticket 22 years ago. Liberals are likely to be swayed, but they want to be swayed against her, and are unlikely to vote for her. That leaves independents who are already very vocal about hating the politics of destruction we are seeing. If the media keeps digging as blatantly as they have the last week, its only going to upset those voters. So rather than put out all the doom and gloom of Allahpundit, why don’t we engage in more serious discussion about the election and how the GOP might maintain the momentum they gained with this pick. Because good or bad, McCain isn’t going to change his mind, so lets build up the McCain/Palin ticket and stop worrying about what we can no longer change.

I love Eugene Volokh’s (Volokh Conspiracy) response (paraphrasing): “There are thousands of sites on the internet. If you don’t like what we post here you are welcome to find one that agrees completely with your views. Good luck.”
SteveMG on September 1, 2008 at 9:14 PM
Aw, come on RB. Where is the evidence of Palin’s “radicalism” or “dangerous potential”? If it’s not there, no parallel can be drawn.

I appreciate Allah doing negative research on our candidates and keeping us informed of possible negatives.
In order to win we need to know the enemy as well as ourselves.
Religious_Zealot on September 1, 2008 at 9:15 PM
Really? That is surprising but great news. I think with time most of use will come around to actually pull the lever for McCain/Palin. I was there months ago because of the alternative.

Whichever one of us who after closing his eyes can come the closest to touching his nose should probably drive.

Why are we helping them again?
Ronnie on September 1, 2008 at 9:15 PM
I guess “Reports” were wrong again Allah.

Obama’s people are the people that got two sealed divorce records unsealed, and umpteen Democrats thrown off ballots.
They are also the people that hid the Annenberg Challenge/Ayers connection.
Of course McCain people should be up their while they’re going after Palin’s records.

because some people can’t get over their vision of “perfection” not being in whichever slot…
well that fight’s over time to fight Team Messiah.

No but you can call people to the carpet when they start watering down the brand in a fit of political rabies. Look at the posts, Terrye. I know you’ve seen some of them, because I’ve seen your posts on many of them. These Sarahcuda Chronicles are just as bad as Obama’s Idiossey (h/t to Iowahawk: must read.) This is political nuclear war on both sides. They escalate with their star power, and then we, in a fit of political-penis envy, start swaggering out with our own brand of Republican Hollywood. My thoughts are that the best way to focus on winning this election is to focus on the principles that really matter. Leave the ancillary stuff alone. People will see it for what its worth. Last time I checked, conservatism embodied a little more restraint.

Amen. The only good politician is the one that respects the Constitution and the rights of the governed. This campaign is a just a sporting event, a Roman Circus that serves as diversion from the damage done and pending.
Peri Winkle on September 1, 2008 at 9:18 PM
Yup, and we should donate as much money as we can to try to get RNC operatives to finally crack Barry’ ties to Ayers and the Daley machine.
sven10077 on September 1, 2008 at 9:18 PM
Someone will decide on who to vote for because others were “mean” to him on a website.
This coming from the same person who likes to boast, in response to his rudeness, that he’s not here “to make friends”.
Sheesh.
SteveMG on September 1, 2008 at 9:18 PM
Oh well that update say’s it all. I mean if she has a good credit rating then who am I to doubt Palin’s qualifications. /s Ha Ha I wonder if Sara’s credit rating came back negative if team McCain would have passed her over?
sonnyspats1 on September 1, 2008 at 9:18 PM
Allah’s “Jumpy” and not really hatin’ on Palin.
Maybe DKOS can use that pass as well. They’re just “jumpy” marxists – and not really out to hang Palin.

Oh well. Time to find some new straws.

With a husband who is part Eskimo and a lifetime living in Alaska I can see why someone might explore various Alaska First propositions. This particular group isn’t even actually secessionist, they just wanted to be able to vote on the idea of secession.
Its obvious sarah Palin absolutely kills the left and Obama. If she were anything close to Dan Quayle they’d just make fun of her and leave it at that. But no, they see the need to so thoroughly destroy her and even THE IDEA OF HER that they will continue smearing and dredging and lying until something finally sticks.
All Americans should take note of this fact.
JonPrichard on September 1, 2008 at 9:19 PM
So far the report card on PDS is thus:
Sarah not Trig’s Mom – F
Trig result of incestuous relationship – F
Sarah faked her pregnancy – F
Sarah didn’t take good prenatal care – F
Sarah named her children after witches – F
Sarah worst VP pick in history – F
Todd is cuckolded husband – F
Sarah wasn’t vetted – F
Hey, it’s a perfect record so far!!
Religious_Zealot on September 1, 2008 at 9:20 PM
The Wash. Times piece sounds like McCain’s team did a pretty thorough job. And that Palin was proactive in her responses.
For instance:
Would that the MSM would Google “William Ayers Obama”.

Athabaskan… not Eskimo

Y’know, I’m sticking with her. I mean, it wasn’t long ago that a folksy person who supposedly had lots of skeletons in his closet became the leader of the free world.
What I do know is that after this election, I am done with politicking and reading blogs. I may have to take up another hobby, like Technological Consulting.
