Reports: McCain camp only starting to fully vet Palin now? Update: 25 people vetted her, says Team McCain

True or not? I’ll give you the “facts” as I’ve collected them and let you decide for yourself.
1. A guy named Andrew Halcro claimed this morning that eight people from Team McCain are checked into the local hotel in Wasilla and are poring through records. Who’s Halcro? He’s the independent who lost the gubernatorial race to her two years ago, and who was quoted sneering at her inability to articulate coherent policies in this weekend’s NYT. Not worth believing, right?
2. Wrong. ABC and NBC are also reporting that McCain’s people are on their way up there to try to beat the press to any hidden dirt.
3. Marc Ambinder claims to know from sources inside the McCain campaign that they’ve already been blindsided by the fact that she requested earmarks as mayor of Wasilla, that she supports a windfall profits tax, and that she doesn’t believe in man-made global warming. I’m skeptical about the last two; her positions are easily researchable on Google, as is the fact that she initially supported the bridge to nowhere. But like I asked this morning, if they knew about the bridge reversal, why’d they let her tout it on Friday knowing that it’d end up being gotcha’d?
4. Rick Davis, McCain’s campaign manager, told WaPo this weekend that none of the final VP contenders were vetted more or less than the others and that all of them were subjected to a records review and FBI background check. Minor problem: The FBI says it didn’t do a background check on Palin (or on any other candidate, for that matter). Maybe Davis meant a background check equivalent to what the FBI routinely does for government employees?
5. Mark Halperin’s asking a lot of unanswered questions here that make it sound like he already knows, or has reason to know, the answer to each one is “no.”
Maybe McCain does know all the dirt already, like he apparently knew about Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy, and simply decided the upside was worth the risk. Or maybe he decided that since he was gambling the election by picking someone so inexperienced anyway, they might as well cut corners on the vetting on the assumption that there’s only so much trouble a hockey mom could have gotten herself into. I don’t think the public is so process-oriented that they’ll draw any sharp conclusions about his judgment in not fully vetting her; I think the risk is that she’ll die a death of a thousand cuts as the media exposes and then inflates a bunch of exceedingly venial sins (the Troopergate investigation being a notable exception), incorporating them into a larger narrative about how America can’t take a chance on a VP who might have outstanding parking tickets that no one even knows about. The point, in other words, isn’t to prove that she’s evil or corrupt, which she almost certainly isn’t; it’s simply to grasp at all available straws, no matter how short, and bundle them together in an “unknown quantity” narrative so that she’s perpetually on the defensive about such important matters as why she didn’t oppose the bridge to nowhere early enough. It’s the best possible contrast for Biden, too. Love him or loathe him, he’s been in D.C. since the Mesozoic Era. WYSIWYG. But Sarah Palin — did you know she served on the board of a 527 for Ted Stevens three years ago? Why, I’ll bet Joe Biden’s never even spoken to Ted Stevens.
Here’s the newest tidbit, straight out of the chute from ABC about a party Palin quit 12 years ago. Expect to hear the name “Robert Byrd” invoked tomorrow in the context of youthful political indiscretions subsequently forgiven by our progressive superiors. Exit question: Assuming, hypothetically, that I wanted to stop sniffing glue, this would be the wrong week for it, no?
Update: Politico puts it in perspective. The “ordinary gal” forcefield is a powerful shield indeed:
“Authenticity is the most important characteristic for someone seeking public office,” said Nick Ayers, executive director of the Republican Governors Association. “Any news that comes out about her is not going to hurt her because it reinforces the point that she is authentically one of us.”…
Even the governor’s own Troopergate scandal, in which Palin is alleged to have exerted undue pressure to fire a state trooper, is suffused with an element that many families can identify with: one sister stepping in on behalf of another in an acrimonious dispute with a brother-in-law.
Powerful media organizations are beginning to pour resources into this story, so much more damaging twists and turns may await. But assuming the accusations don’t grow more serious, it is of a considerably different nature as an abuse of power than the last Troopergate scandal to rock the political world — the one in which Bill Clinton was alleged to use his state troopers in Arkansas to procure women as sex partners. That wouldn’t excuse Palin’s actions, of course, but it would frame them in such a way that could limit the political damage.
Update: Team Maverick tries to soothe a jumpy blogger’s fraying nerves.
Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser, said the campaign always planned to send a “jump team” to the eventual running mate’s home state to work with the nominee’s staff, help with information requests from local and national reporters, and answer questions about documents that were part of the review.
Culvahouse said Palin’s review, like others, began with a team of two dozen people culling information from public sources. The team reviewed speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces, for a number of potential running mates.
For Palin specifically, the team studied online archives of the state’s largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News, but didn’t request paper archives for Palin’s hometown newspaper for fear the secret review would become public…
Palin then was sent a personal data questionnaire with 70 “very intrusive” questions, Culvahouse said. She also was asked to submit a number of years of federal and state tax returns. The campaign also checked her credit.

MAVERICK!*
I hope you really paid attention in class the week they went over calculated risk and Midway.
sven10077 on September 1, 2008 at 8:07 PM
The libs never vetted Barack Obama, whats the difference? They will trash McCain and his running mate regardless, if there isn’t much there they will make it up and blow it out of proportion. There is simple nobody in the running that they would have left alone. This is the reality nowadays.

Death by a thousand cuts may be right…but I hope not.

Cold Steel on September 1, 2008 at 8:09 PM
Okay, I’ll bite. Maybe he didn’t vet her to the normal standards.
But maybe he thought if he announced that decision when he did it would kill Obama’s bump. And he thought the reward of timing was greater then the risk of possible problems in the past.
As I said in the other thread, there are no scandals [yet]. If that stays that way, there’s no problems.
Spirit of 1776 on September 1, 2008 at 8:11 PM
Drip, drip, drip.
That’s the drugs going into AP’s veins.
Or maybe Palin’s viability slowly eroding away.
Perhaps both.
Or neither.
SteveMG on September 1, 2008 at 8:12 PM
It’s a calculated risk… I do think that they did do vetting and they did know about Todd’s DUI and Bristol’s pregnancy, but they’re doing extra work now to make extra sure.

Exactly. News is news, not scandal. As long as she’s come by her positions honestly, people aren’t going to be bugged by her. And she’ll take the party line, so it’s all gravy.

sven10077 on September 1, 2008 at 8:14 PM
Some of this is becoming genuinely ridiculous. For example, the “revelation” that Todd Palin had a DUI 22 years ago. Not long before that Barack Obama was using cocaine. Which is more consequential? The answer to that question is what leads anyone with a brain to conclude that most if not all of what the AP is calling “stunning Palin disclosures” is actually just throwing absolutely anything they can get their hands on against the wall, and hoping that something–anything!–will stick.
Athanasius on September 1, 2008 at 8:14 PM
The McCain team needs to get her out in the spotlight and let her define herself instead of the media. Get her on O’Reilly or something.

I told my husband before we got married that I hoped he didn’t have any political aspirations. (ahem…)
Hillary Clinton/Barack O’Bama/John Kerry made a conscience decision to seek the Presidency when they were like 5 years old. I’m sure every move they ever made even as teenagers and young adults was with an eye to how this would look in the coming years. (OK, I’m exagerating, but not by much).
It is next to impossible to go through your youth without doing at least something that would be controversial. Be it political, sexual, partying-related, whatever.
mrsmwp on September 1, 2008 at 8:14 PM
Seems a bit odd to be talking about this NOW. If McCain picked her despite any dirt then he’s weighed the risk. If he picked her without his staff vetting her, then, Houston, we have a problem.

Andrew Halcro is a complete jerk, who looks down on anyone who he thinks is not up to snuff with him. He was so made he wasn’t choosen as Gov. he started taking it out on his own people who voted for him. Need I say more?
Keep sniffing Allah, this isn’t over yet.

FiveWays on September 1, 2008 at 8:15 PM
The problem, of course, with all of these very minor (so far) revelations is that she’s a blank slate to many Americans and if her introduction is shaped by these stories the public’s view will obviously be skewed negatively.
With a thin (yes, impressive) resume, she has little to fall back on. Someone applying for a job with 10 years experience but a minor drug offense will be more acceptable than a person with 2 years experience and a similar drug conviction.
So far, compared to Obama’s radical background and questionable associations, Palin’s a saint.
SteveMG on September 1, 2008 at 8:16 PM
Possible warts and all, it is the only good decision McCain has made in the last 10 years.
Throw her under the bus now is mavericky but suicidal.

That’s interesting. This girl is going to be interesting. Moreover, it’s fun to learn more about Alaska’s special situational. She was saying in one of the interviews I watched that Alaska needs to be free to access it’s natural resources in order to develop economically. Maybe this is part of finding allies for that cause.

I’m still with Sarah. I look forward to hearing her speak this week. I watched C-SPAN at the recent rally but she just gave her “coming out” speech from Friday. I’m really interested to hear more. In the absence of new info from her and McCain directly, we will continue to get inflated little tidbits. Darned Gustav.

Indeed. I don’t know why some of you guys complain about me being pessimistic. This post isn’t pessimistic; it’s simple fact. McCain’s going to have to deal with it, like it or not, so you might as well know.

Mostly I stick to Ed’s posts except to snark at the girly men.
Ohhh I see I’m not the only one. Hmmm
TBinSTL on September 1, 2008 at 8:19 PM
Isn’t it more likely that the McCain campaign is sending people to Alaska for a rapid reaction team, to respond quickly to anything someone tries to gin up? I think we will probably see the Governor sitting down for some indepth interviews here pretty quickly, or at least the campaign should be doing that, so that people will have her face and voice in mind as they hear all the dreadful details about how she once passed in a term paper super late and how she giggled inappropriately in church last summer and how she sent the kids to school one time without enough lunch money.
Bennett on September 1, 2008 at 8:19 PM
The MSM seem to be going to an awful lot of trouble to dig up dirt on Palin.
Too bad they’ve never been this interested in finding out what’s in Obama’s closet. Based on the little we’ve been able to find out about him to date, I’m guessing he’s hiding stuff in there that’s a lot more troubling than a spouse’s DUI from 2 decades ago, or the firing of an abusive state trooper.
AZCoyote on September 1, 2008 at 8:19 PM
How far would Obama get if he were vetted?

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 1, 2008 at 8:19 PM
Good point, locke.
I agree. Actually, I’ve never been a fan of McCain, but I am extremely impressed with this campaign. He is showing the kind of leadership that is inspirational, to be frank. He is willing to take risks and live with the consequences. I don’t like it when he is doing it anti-base, but I have to give him credit, it’s very impressive and so far he’s been steadily climbing.
Spirit of 1776 on September 1, 2008 at 8:20 PM
Okay, Wasilla is a town of less than 10,000. If there’s dirt on the Palins, I guarantee eveyone in that town knows about it. As the Time reporter who wrote about the Bristol pregnancy being an “open secret” can attest, if you want to vet Sarah Palin, just spend a couple of hours in the local coffee shop and you’ll probably hear everything there is to hear. Wasillans clearly love Sarah for the most part and are quite eager to talk about her. They’re so guileless that it doesn’t seem to occur to them to temper their words.
aero on September 1, 2008 at 8:20 PM
So what have we heard troper gate and Sarah’s daughter and she talked to Pat Buchanan. Joe Biden sees that and raises you a few greater gaffes.
William Amos on September 1, 2008 at 8:20 PM
Not sure the AIP stuff will really make all that much of a difference. They seem more kooky than hateful.
Still, if the non-vetting is true, pretty sloppy work on the Maverick’s part.

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 1, 2008 at 8:20 PM
Well … we’re getting used to shocking news every five minutes in this campaign!
Whatever the truth about vetting is, the bottom line for me is that Obama’s tax and economic policies will hurt businesses and individuals, and his approach to foreign policy is just scary. Russia will send all its best talkers to talk and talk and talk with him as they move the tanks. Everything else is superfluous.

The thing w/ all the revelations of Palin is there’s an opposite/equal “revelation” that has come out about Obama. And, again-she is the VP nominee not the Prez…
Static21 on September 1, 2008 at 8:22 PM
You always need allies for any legislative or representative move, unless you own majority. That’s all I mean. Ever issue has to be mobilized among a group of people if votes are needed.
As I implied above, I’m not that familar with Alaska’s specific situation, though I’m trying to learn as much as I can, so if it is merely a situation of the executive branch doing or not doing, fine; but usually these things take political pressure which means political coalitions.
Spirit of 1776 on September 1, 2008 at 8:22 PM
I mean honestly, if I want a constant stream of negative posts on McCain or Palin, I’ll go and read the Huffington Post or the Daily Kos.

Even if they destroy the ticket, even if we lose, the M$M will have been exposed as being deeply in the then President’s pocket and the people will distrust them both as things decline or crisis hits.
The M$M pulling so hard and covering for Barry is to both their long-term detriment.

Nice one AK. Don’t worry, you’ve made McCain’s cheerleading squad. You’ve shown just the right spunk and peppiness. If you can’t define your position without consistently referring to Obama, then you’re reasoning is weak indeed. Either Palin is a good solid choice or she’s not. “At least she’s not Obama”, or “she has more experience than Obama” is juvenile. BTW, is “writing-in” or going third party voting for Obamessiah? My guess based on your concrete reasoning is yes.
Cold Steel on September 1, 2008 at 8:23 PM

I can’t believe I’m about to type this, and chalk it up to Palinmania, but…let’s trust McCain just a little bit. I think McCain knows about most, but figured it wouldn’t be enough. He played a very savvy campaign just prior to the Palin pick, and I simply can’t believe that, after striking the right stride, he would then close his eyes, grab the girl from Alaska, and say “Fingers crossed, hope it works.”

The more I hear about her, the more I like her. I have more things in common with Sarah Palin than I do with McCain, Obama, and Biden combined – and Biden is a Senator from my home state!
I firmly believe that the Presidency is for everybody, not a select few individuals who have bought their way into it. To me, that also makes Palin more qualified than the other three – she is more representative of Middle America than the rest of them.

Spirit of 1776 on September 1, 2008 at 8:26 PM
In the era of the internet, bloggers and the faster news cycle, selecting a unknown candidate like Palin makes increasingly less sense. There’re just too many people digging into people’s backgrounds, too many place to disseminate dirt (true or not).
Imagine JFK running today? My god, he’d never make it.
This is one area where McCain’s ignorance (generally speaking) of the new media may wind up hurting him greatly.
On the other hand, because of the faster news cycle, minor stories get exaggerrated and over played. Much of the public, I think, isn’t following any of this.
Sound and fury?

We all have warts. But yes the more people see Sarah I think they will like her. She is human.
She needs to come out firing on her speech. It does make her convention speech all the more important.
And yes I agree – she is better than other choices we had. And it doesnt matter – we have to go with her now – its too late to change now.
The unfairness of the media is truely disgusting – but its what we have been putting up with for years.
Its time to take our media to task! No woman is going to want to run for office if they are successful.
I will pray that her speech is a great one and she has a good couple of weeks.
For the country – for the world’s sake.

RE: Not vetted?
I wouldn’t be surprised. In fact, I would presume that McCain went with his gut instinct. He liked her, like her story and accomplishments, and the way she achieved them.
Now the news media, and everyone else is going to dissect Gov Palin’s life story minute by minute going back to her grandparents.
Note: if you have ever filed out an employment application for a federal position you know it is multiple pages, and they want to know where your grandparents were born and where they lived, every job you have ever held, every organization you have ever joined, and every place you have ever lived.
Next the news media will paint that second by second dissection of Gov. Palin’s life in the worst possible light, making the most damaging assumptions.
If that isn’t enough, they will rewrite history, or find someone who will claim something which can’t be proven, because it is not about finding out the truth, it is about destroying white conservative Christian republicans.

Irish cream + Ripple = “Cripple”
Champagne + Ripple = “Champipple”
Glue + Ripple = “Glipple”
