The comments are rather strange on this one. They seem to have this Obama-like worship of Sarah Palin, and I think it detracts from conservatism's largest appeal, consistent humility. I hate it when either side (us or theirs) tries to ignore a mistake.
.
Sarah Palin did not just change her mind. She changed her mind, and tried to act like she did it for reasons that are inconsistent with the statements she made along the way. Her mistake was this, "... tout[ing] her actions on the bridge to nowhere in her announcement speech on Friday knowing... that she had initially supported it." If you dont trust the ADN, read her office's press releases. It's not that she changed her mind, gave up, or supported this bridge (that I'm not even convinced was a purely bad idea) that was the problem. The problem is that she tried to use this series of events that were mostly out of her control to make it look like she had done something particularly noble.
.
Don't get me wrong, I think she has done MANY noble things. She just screwed up here, and we need to take it with a grain of salt and move on; she has many positives that make up for this.
.
As far as her daughter, who cares? You strive for perfection and when (not if) you screw up, you continue to strive for perfection. In this case, perfection is for her daughter at this point is to accept responsibility for her actions, have the child, and continue her life. I'm glad she is doing the right thing. I don't understand how even the most liberal ass in the country can call her mom a hypocrite for any of this.

Wait, don't let her in Government. She's running the State budget like a household budget. Stay within your income, try to avoid unnecessary expenses, don't get things you don't need, weigh the pros and cons of any expense, how dare she.

We can't have that in Government.

Why? I don't know... we never have before. So I'm guessing there must be a reason why it's a bad thing.

Government must spend like a drunken monkey because it always has... who knows what could happen if that stops.

Bad things I'm guessing... maybe really bad things.

For more detail and facts, please go over and read a more detail story of the "bridge" at Flopping Aces.

http://www.floppingaces.net/2008/08/31/palins-bridge-to-nowhere-fiscally-responsible-or-politically-expedient/

"<em>So the charge she did the politically expedient thing just doesn’t hold much water. It’s hardly a decision that came out of no where. A flip flop? She would have had to have been fully on board with the project since day one for it to be a complete turn around. Indications that she wasn’t sold on the idea were there from the beginning.

Instead Palin approached the project with the respect due to both the Ketchikan residents and the advocates who had worked so long to secure the funding. And in the end, she opted to do the right fiscal thing for the State."</em>

NEW politicians need to be given a few years to figure out what kind of politician they are going to be.

Once they set upon a path, if they stick to it, there is nothing wrong with making mistakes the first few years.

OK, let me get this straight. The complaint now is that at first impression, the idea of a bridge in Alaska was a good thing. And I'd agree. A bridge means jobs for the construction, and it may mean easier access for residents etc.

However, once she became aware of the details, which are never in the initial information package I might add. Usually, you get a sound bite or a small news release. So the details contained the many sour pills that turned her against it.

This is supposed to be bad? Are you joking? I am for immigration reform, but not the version we had submitted by John McCain. I would like to see an Ellis Island style approach to immigration, where the individuals background is checked quickly, medical checks are performed and treatments offered for health issues, especially public health issues, and then Welcome to the United States. I would like to see a years long delay from the time that you entered illegally to the time you were eligible to re-enter and become a citizen. Something like a decade or so. However the current plan that says "Spent several years lying to people and stealing their identities? No problem, Welcome to America and please vote for me. We'll forget that you completely screwed up their Social Security accounts, their credit record, and whatever happens to them, we don't give a damn, so long as you're welcomed right this instant."

I'd like to see it easier for them to obey the law and enter legally, ending the years long delay to get permission to enter the nation and start on the path to citizenship. I like the idea of Immigrants, legal immigrants. My ancestors were immigrants, as were everyone else who is here now. Including the <strike>Indians</strike> sorry Native Americans. They didn't appear here by magic, their ancestors trekked here too.

Does that mean I have a history of flip flopping? If it does, then by God I'll take that.

Initially, my reaction is I feel comfortable with Palin, for a number of reasons. Unlike anyone else running for office, she's had to work to get where she is, recently worked her ass off. She knows what it's like to juggle family and career. If I had some assurance that McCain wouldn't be there for more than a couple years, I'd almost be willing to vote for him.

I think she's essentially honest, and I think when the cards are on the table, she'll do what she believes is the right thing, because it's the right thing. I probably won't agree with everything she'd do, or say. However I respect those I disagree with if they can show me they are doing what they believe is right. McCain can't show me that, there is no way he can show me that abridging Freedom of Speech was the right thing in McCain Feingold. He said at the time that we'd have to see what the Supreme Court said about it. Sorry, it says Congress shall pass no law. It doesn't say that Congress shall pass any old law, and the responsibility for not violating the freedom of speech rests with the court.

Wait.... how is she lying about anything? In her introduction speech she said, "Thanks, but no thanks." The news articles from that time period paint a picture of Palin knowing that the bridge would have been a good thing for the locals in that area, but upon further reflection the project size and the amount of money it would take to undergo the project greatly outweighed the need. "Thanks, but no thanks."
