Supposedly McCain knew. Did he?
The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.
Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin’s five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain…
Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter’s pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way…
McCain officials said the news of the daughter’s pregnancy was being released to rebut what one aide called “mud-slinging and lies” circulating on liberal blog sites.
And here’s the statement, via Team McCain, from Palin and her husband:
“We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.
“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.”
Gathering my thoughts. Stand by for updates.
Update: It shouldn’t hurt Palin but it will, because like I said in my pessimism post on Friday, any sort of embarrassment that she brings to the campaign will be used by the media to push the Dan Quayle/disastrous gamble meme, whether or not the embarrassment’s her own fault or not. (They’ll spin it as a comment on McCain’s “judgment” in picking her.) The left, normally all for teen sex, will naturally use it as an excuse to call her daughter a whore in the guise of criticizing Palin herself for her position on abstinence-only education, which is why I’m thinking maybe McCain really did know about it: Per KP’s analysis, the nastier and more personal the left gets, the greater the risk of a backlash that benefits Palin.
Belated exit question: Anyone find it amazingly coincidental that Daily Kos went after Palin’s own pregnancy right out of the chute on Friday, with no apparent evidence whatsoever, and now we find out that her daughter’s actually pregnant? I usually scoff at the idea of party researchers planting memes with bloggers, especially since the nutroots is so paranoid about that happening on the right, but that’s a simply remarkable stoke of good luck on their part, no?
Update: A second belated exit question: Did they really release this to quash nutroots rumors, which were already pretty well quashed this morning, or because between Gustav and the convention it’s the perfect time to bury it?
Update: Between CNN wondering why the mother of a special needs baby would head off on the campaign trail and Alan Colmes rolling around in the sewer, the left’s been itching since the announcement on Friday to paint her as an unfit mother. Expect a lot of very solemn tut-tutting about how selfish Palin is to have accepted the nomination knowing it’ll only throw a spotlight on her poor daughter, even as they themselves ratchet that spotlight up to nuclear-flash brightness.
Update: Since the dirty laundry’s all coming out today, sources close to Palin tell David Brody that Palin’s husband was arrested for DUI 22 years ago.
Update: A commenter suggests a title for when they make a movie of this saga: “Juneau.”
Update: KP was ahead of the game:
A McCain campaign official tells ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos that McCain knew of Bristol’s pregnancy and “didn’t believe Governor Palin should be disqualified” from the vice presidency because of it. “If Democrats try to attack, it will backfire spectacularly,” the official said.
Update: The more I think about it, the more I think McCain probably did know. The timing is simply perfect to release the news: You wouldn’t want to do it on Friday, lord knows, when she’s getting her intro to the country, and you wouldn’t want to do it later in the campaign when it’s closer to Election Day or even later this week when it’d distract from her convention speech. Now’s the time to do it, when it’ll be no higher than the third-most important story of the day.
If I’m right, then the nutroots’s smears about Palin’s own pregnancy gave McCain an amazingly fortuitous pretext here. Now he gets to play the victim — “we had to do it to stop those dastardly left-wing bloggers from hurting the family” — instead of just someone making an embarrassing admission.
Update: Jonathan Martin says social cons won’t be happy about the news. True, but they won’t be particularly upset about it either. The left will push this hard thinking that it’s some kind of dealbreaker for the Christian right, but to believe that you’d have to fundamentally misunderstand where the Christian right’s main emphasis lies. Says Goldstein:
Many on the left will believe, quite mistakenly, that such an announcement is likely to weaken Palin’s support among “the hard-right conservative base”. But in fact, it will do no such thing — first, because the “hard-right conservative base” that liberal Democrats consistently invoke is largely a caricature that lives only in their minds and as a convenient trope in their rhetoric, from whence it can be trotted out as a foil and a boogeyman on cue; and second, because those energized over the choice of Palin include many disaffected libertarians and classical liberals who were, until the announcement of the Governor’s candidacy, set to either sit the election out, or else cast a protest vote for Bob Barr.
Update: And as if right on cue to prove my last point, here’s David Brody of CBN explaining why this won’t hurt Palin with the base.
I’m sure lots of people will take their shots at the pro-life Christian woman but hold on a moment. If you think Evangelicals are going to ditch her for this, you’re totally misreading the situation. As a matter of fact, they are ready to fire back at any potential critics…
Look, this development will actually be positive for the most part with Evangelicals. First they hear that Sarah Palin chooses the life option even though she had a Downs Syndrome baby and once again the family (and Bristol) has chosen the life option in this recent case. That’s a double “ca-ching”. Let’s call this the Evangelical daily double. If anything, this whole situation will probably make more people around the country relate to her and her family. It makes them more real. Will there by some turned off by the whole pre-marital sex thing? Of course but this type of story doesn’t sink her at all with Evangelicals.
Update: The boss notes the contrast with Obama’s notorious “punished with a baby” comment, something else that’ll make it hard for him to capitalize on this with Christians.
Update: Every post Althouse has written about Palin is worth reading, but this is especially sharp:
Oh, that looks like a meme. Sarah Palin must stay home with her special needs baby. Sarah Palin must stay home with her about-to-be-married, pregnant daughter. Ladies: Put your career on hold until everything in you’re family stops happening… Would a man forgo his career to be there for a family member who is experiencing an important life transition?
Remember when John Edwards decided to go on with his campaign after his wife got a diagnosis of inoperable cancer? Now, I think Elizabeth Edwards was probably excited about the campaign and wanted to go on with it. In that light, why are you assuming that Bristol Palin isn’t excited about her mother’s campaign? Unlike Elizabeth Edwards, Bristol is not facing her last days. She’s just starting out — all caught up in life. Presumably, she intense and positive about her pro-life beliefs, her love for the baby’s father, her impending wedding, and the new baby on the way.
Update: Needless to say, for a variety of reasons you won’t be hearing anything about this from Team Barry. But in case any more reason was needed, people are e-mailing to remind me that The One’s mother was also a teenager when she gave birth to him and married his father just six months before he was born. That won’t stop the left from attacking, of course — remember, the ostensible sin here is hypocrisy, not teen motherhood, even though the point clearly enough is to try to shame Palin with her daughter’s morals.
Update: And here’s NBC pushing the abstinence-only angle.
Update: For once, Dobson sounds the right note:
“In the 32-year history of Focus on the Family, we have offered prayer, counseling and resource assistance to tens of thousands of parents and children in the same situation the Palins are now facing. We have always encouraged the parents to love and support their children and always advised the girls to see their pregnancies through, even though there will of course be challenges along the way. That is what the Palins are doing, and they should be commended once again for not just talking about their pro-life and pro-family values, but living them out even in the midst of trying circumstances.
“Being a Christian does not mean you’re perfect. Nor does it mean your children are perfect. But it does mean there is forgiveness and restoration when we confess our imperfections to the Lord. I’ve been the beneficiary of that forgiveness and restoration in my own life countless times, as I’m sure the Palins have.
“The media are already trying to spin this as evidence Gov. Palin is a ‘hypocrite,’ but all it really means is that she and her family are human. They are in my prayers and those of millions of Americans.”
Update: Like I’ve been telling you all along, The One may be many things, but he’s no dummy. Consider this the equivalent of McCain’s “congratulations” ad last week: Classy, and also shrewd.
Mr. Obama, campaigning here, also noted that his own mother was 18 when she gave birth to him.
“People’s families are off limits,” he said. “People’s children are especially off limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. ”
“I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories,” he added. “That shouldn’t be a topic in our politics.”
He vehemently pushed back against an unnamed McCain aide suggesting his campaign had any ties to the blogs that were spreading rumors before the news broke, saying he was “offended” by that and if any of his staff was involved in spreading the issue, “they’d be fired.”
Update: Your must-read of the day: Time reporter Nathan Thornburgh on how he’d already heard all about the pregnancy from people in Wasilla and how they — and he — agreed that it was nobody’s business but the Palins’.
All weekend they had the decency not to pretend that they didn’t know the governor’s eldest daughter was pregnant. But they also expected decency in return, that I wouldn’t be the kind of person to make sport out of a young girl’s slip…
As for the idea — sure to be floated—that the avowedly anti-abortion Palin may have pressured her poor daughter to ruin her life by carrying an unwanted baby to term, I wouldn’t bet on it. The Palin family seems to share the same pro-life values going back at least as far back as anyone here can remember, and it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Bristol wore those values, however imperfectly, as her own. At least, that’s what the town thinks. And Wasilla, above all, is pretty sensible.
Update: Lee Stranahan does the math for Trig Truthers: “Some people are still holding onto the fake pregnancy rumor. Let’s just do some math. Trig was on April 18, 2008 – about four months and a week ago. Bristol is said to be five months pregnant. Now, if you want to pretend that the five month date is a total lie then you’d also have to believe that the 17 year old had a Down’s Syndrome baby then turned right around and got pregnant again presumably because the first premature birth was so freakin’ awesome!”

Anyone gonna guess that Obama’s Camp will dump Biden’s dirty landry right about now ?

Meant to add that if the Left keeps up the attacks Sarah her pregnancy, her daughters, this will turn off a lot of female voters.

Uh. What’s so unfunny about that? Have you seen the picture of Palin kneeling over the caribou that she kilt?
Lighten up, people.

Last a looked, teens have a strong urge to do these things.
Sometimes this is the result.

You know, Romney couldn’t get pregnant. I’m just saying…

Yeah this is too coincidental for it not to be a Rovian setup to make them attack a Down’s baby and a faked pregnancy. A tip to someone slightly more nutty than Sullivan would be all it takes.
I’m surprised they aren’t checking DNA now to prove it is not a Down’s baby and that the disability is all a lie.

Win/Win for Maverick. A grandmother and her daughter teach the lesson that when you become pregnant that you don’t murder the child.
Of course liberals would despise this story since it not only shows commitment and courage, but that this family respects the sanctity of human life. That’s something that I find comforting in the leadership profile of a candidate to rule the most powerful nation on earth. Post modern liberals love to cry at the drop of a hat, but can commit infanticide in the millions with a smirk on their hypocritical faces.
Hening on September 1, 2008 at 12:54 PM
She, of course, could respond: “Thank you, Mr. Biden. And I hope that your brother and your son are cleared of those charges. Be a shame to see a fine young man like that end up in a ten by ten cell witha big hairy guy named Butch McDick.”

Come on be real. The type of earrings the woman wears cause sensation in the media.
Palni can do no right. She is the wicked witch of the North and I’m not talking the peaceful Wicca type. Nothing and I do mean nothing would be remotely considered “right” by the media. If the girl had an abortion Palin would just be another hypocrite. If she didn’t she is nothing more than trailer trash. The point is that this is a win for Palins detractors no matter what but guess what? None of the detractors are going to vote for McCain anyway so who cares. The only people that they are hoping to affect are the weak willed and easily controlled and they are using a shotgun approach to nail as many of them as they can. Is Palin a bad mom? Let’s see. Did the girl go off and have an abortion without telling her mother? No? Why not I’m sure they are free or at the very least completely confidential for a girl her age. No she is going to have the baby and get married to the father. Wow I guess mom really instill the pro-life, pro-marriage into her kids. How about the guy? It also looks like the girl at least picked a guy that stands by his girl and honors his obligations. Yup the media will have a field day and it’s just about as bad as those earrings. If this turns people to BO or makes them stay home then I congratulate you on being easily swayed and I doubt very much you would have voted anyway.
jmarcure on September 1, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Social Conservatives will probably think about what has happened in their own families. This is hardly a unique situation.
I moved to a small(ish) Southern town some years ago, and it didn’t take long for me to realize my new home was, in many ways, a microcosm of the large city I gladly left. We have a large community of gays and lesbians, something I was unaware of until my hair dresser told me. They were born and raised here, and most of them have thriving businesses. Libs would probably assume that one would drive down Main Street here and see bodies swinging from trees. They’re so bizarre.
Gov. Palin’s situation with her daughter is nothing unusual for many parents. I wish the young couple all the best, and I do hope they can be kept out of the limelight.
Also, remember last election when Kerry (or Edwards? I forget) brought up Cheney’s daughter who is gay? Wow! If looks could kill. I admired Cheney’s response – and his restraint.
This will blow over, too.
Cody1991 on September 1, 2008 at 12:55 PM
& had it been Barry’s daughter, that ‘Child’ would have been flushed w/ impunity = why Sarah will continue to rock!
lobosan5 on September 1, 2008 at 12:55 PM
I don’t accept the premise that being pregnant at age 17 is intrinsically evil.
Abortion is intrinsically evil.
Life is intrinsically good, under any circumstance.
Look at how many conservatives here are slurping the post-modernist kool-aid that pregnancy is a punishment on the stupid, or the uncool small city hicks.
I think life is an absolute good, an absolute miracle.
Yup, she got knocked up at age 17.
Things that happen during the course of life rarely happen under ideal circumstances. And my experience is that it’s the unsettling, unexpected, unplanned events are the very events that cause a person to mature most profoundly.
jeff_from_mpls on September 1, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Let’s put this in perspective, ‘kay?
I just turned 52. My four closest friends are 52, 51, and 44, Governor Palin’s age. Every single one of us got pregnant before we married while living in southern California, where the weather is no excuse. None of us is the type of person you would ever expect to see on the Jerry Springer show.
Every female born or married into my husband’s family got pregnant before marriage. All the children of my siblings are never-marrieds with children of their own.
Pregnancy out of wedlock is not limited to those who live in small towns or trailers. It is a widespread middle class phenomenon and there hasn’t been much stigma attached since the early 1970s.

Bristol was off the trail for most of the announcement tour and she definitely didn’t look @ all happy in the People shoot and Mom’s annoucement, so I’m thinking that it was probably known beforehand. And Palin did go through some vetting, so I’m sure that it was known by Mac and staff.
As for the timing, it was definitely because of the Hurricane. Always a good time to dump info…

If anything how is this any different than Obama’s story ? Didnt his father leave his mother to raise him by Herself as a single parent ?
Palin could saying she will work with her daughter and give her a good life and do what ever mother should do.
I cant see Obama spinning this as a negative.

FAKE! FAKE! CONSPIRACY! 9/11! VALERIE PLAME! RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!
In other news, I can’t wait for Biden to bring this up in the debate, and for Palin to unload the whole “blessing vs punishment” argument on him.

The “grandmother” thing sort of balances out the “only 44″ thing, too. :o)
Tanya on September 1, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Vyce,
I have to disagree with you 100%. This will not undercut support from evangelicals or Social Cons. I’m telling you, this story and the way the Palins have responded will only endear people to her story even more.
Believe me, I’m one of the evangelicals and Social Cons bemoaned by the media.
One other thing about this supposedly reinforcing the “she wasn’t fully vetted” line. While I think some will try to use that, the reality is that the McCain camp have clearly and succicntly stated they knew. So it was part of the vetting process.
Again, I’m going to enjoy watching the media fall all over themselves on this one and then fall all over myself as I watch it explode in their faces…

How is this a problem for Social Conservatives? What do you expect is in the Social Conservative Handbook regarding daughters who make questionable moral choices ? Burning at the stake? For those of you who think this matters to a Social Con like me-please grab a Bible and read the Prodigal Son Parable!!!
Anyway to paraphase the Spirit Of Michelle Obama: These questions about Palin aren’t helping Palin’s children. I mean really? The Obama children get covered in People but Palin’s children get dragged through the mud. Nice.
creatureofdust on September 1, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Of course McCain knew…assuming Palin knew, that is.
The nut-rots will use this as an excuse to keep speculating about Palin’s kid being the mother of their youngest son–who’s to say the oldest daughter didn’t get preggers right after the birth, right?
Social cons will be endeared to the fact that the eldest daughter is having the kid and will marry the father. They won’t like the pre-marital sex thing, but they will like how it was dealt with.
BryanS on September 1, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Here’s another thought:
Before the Left rolls out any “If Palin weren’t so busy her kid wouldn’t be pregnant” garbage, they’d better ask themselves: Do they want to condemn themselves for (a.) their own career choices, or (b.) the career choices of professional women in this country?
I think not.

cgoode777 on September 1, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Nope, not at all. I think they’ll stay away from the daughter and (maybe) even the mom. I think the campaign will hit Mav on the vetting issue. They’ll stay away from making any
The LLL blogs, however, will sink deeper into the sewer and of course, attack everything from the daughter to Sara’s fitness to be a mother.
I agree with Allah — it sounds like somebody slipped a bit of oppo research/rumor to the nutroots, without quite giving a fully accurate/complete story, and what came out of it looks like the predictable game of Internet “telephone” that would result.

I can just hear Tom Brokaw worrying about how a mythical baby-hating evangelical group is oh so concerned about whether Gov Palin is right for them… anymore.
And Brokaw will waddle his neck in feigned concern about the ignorance of GOP base and then offer whether Team McCain can weather such a Category Gazzillion Storm.

This only matters to me if Palin knew about it and didn’t tell McCain. Better that it comes out now on Hurricane Day than the middle of October. I think she probably needs to give more than a written statement on the matter, and address this head on in her speech this week. McCain can play the overprotective uncle on this one at the first sign of lefty criticism and unload with both barrels. Righteous indignation is something he does very well.

Everyone beating on AP:
Ask yourself, “would it have been better for everyone had Bristol not gotten pregnant in the first instance?”
The answer seems obvious, both personally and politically. It’s not a cataclysm, and folks rightly may admire how the family is dealing with it. But it is generally not the best situation for anyone.
I have taken my share of shots at Allah’s pessimism, but this is a case where going out of one’s way to paint a smiley face on the situation would be a little detached from reality.

No doubt!
First, it pushes Bush/Cheney out of the convention.
Second it allows McCain and the Republicans to look magnanimous by holding back on convention goings on and replacing it with fund raisers.
Third, it allows the Bush administration to show competence in handling this hurricane.
Fourth, it buries the Palin kid’s pregnant story.
Fifth, it buries the husband’s DUI.
Sixth, it makes Micheal Moore and other hyper partisan Dems look stupid.

There has never been a more clear contrast of life outlooks in any election that I can remember.
Sarah Palin & Family are more like me than anyone who has ever run for office. McCain recognizes what this woman has been able to accomplish with so much stacked against her, and for that he has earned even greater respect from me.
Easiest choice I’ll ever make will be voting for McCain and Palin this November. Can’t wait to get back to the States and help out.

The Democrats will applaud this – after all that is what they did when celebrity Britney Spear’s sister made teenage pregnancy cool. They even put 16-year old, Jamie Lynn Spears, on the cover of People and OK! magazine.

And now Palin can add grandmother to her resume’.
And the child could be born around the same time Palin is sworn in as Vice-President.
albill on September 1, 2008 at 1:04 PM
But if Palin knew her daughter was pregnant prior to Friday, it was her duty not to accept the VP nomination for the sake of the party and frankly, the country.
If you know your daughter is pregnant you have a duty not to accept the nomination for VP ?!

Biden’s draft deferments equal Cheney’s during Vietnam War
DOVER, Del. (AP) | Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, received five student draft deferments during the Vietnam War, the same number of deferments received by Vice President Dick Cheney, and later was disqualified from service because of asthma as a teenager.
Officials with the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, released Mr. Biden’s Selective Service records at the request of the Associated Press. Less detailed records were available from a National Archives facility in Philadelphia.
According to the documents, Mr. Biden, 65, received several deferments while he was an undergraduate at the University of Delaware and later as a law student at Syracuse University.
A month after undergoing a physical exam in April 1968, Mr. Biden received a Selective Service classification of 1-Y, meaning he was available for service only in the event of national emergency.
“As a result of a physical exam on April 5, 1968, Joe Biden was classified 1-Y and disqualified from service because of asthma as a teenager,” said David Wade, a campaign spokesman.
In “Promises to Keep,” a memoir that was published last year and became an instant best-seller after he was tapped as Mr. Obama’s running mate, Mr. Biden never mentions his asthma, recounting an active childhood, work as a lifeguard and football exploits in high school.
The Obama campaign pointed to media interviews from 1987, when Mr. Biden was making his first bid for the presidency, that mention his asthma.
Military service and questions about which presidential ticket would be stronger on national security are intertwined in the presidential race. Republican John McCain, a former Navy pilot who spent 5 1/2 years in a North Vietnamese prison, has argued that he has a stronger background to be commander in chief. Mr. Obama counters that Mr. McCain would continue a wrong-headed foreign policy from the Bush administration.
Mr. Biden has had extensive experience with national security issues, having served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. McCain running mate Sarah Palin has been Alaska governor for two years and before that was a small-town mayor.
Mr. Biden’s five student deferments equal the number given to Mr. Cheney, who has been quoted as saying he had “other priorities” than military service in the 1960s. Mr. Cheney has been widely derided as a “chicken hawk” and worse in liberal circles over his deferments.
According to records AP obtained from the National Archives, Mr. Biden registered Feb. 15, 1961, with the Selective Service, when he was an 18-year-old student at Archmere Academy in Wilmington. The archives documents do not include any information about his classification or physical exam.
Documents provided by the Obama campaign indicate that Mr. Biden received a classification questionnaire in October 1963, when he was enrolled at the University of Delaware, and received his first 2-S student deferment a month later.
More deferments came in roughly 12-month intervals, the last in January 1968, shortly before he graduated from law school at Syracuse University. In April 1968, when he was 25, Mr. Biden was disqualified from service because of asthma.

Vyce on September 1, 2008 at 1:05 PM
Gosh. I just don’t know about this.
I have a 15-year-old son and I am desperately preaching abstinence to him. I really think this does not help those of us who have teenage children. Politically, I could care less and I doubt it will do anything but backfire on Obama if the Dems try to make it an issue. But as a parent of a teenager, I do not appreciate having this in the headlines for the next 8 weeks, any more than I appreciated Jamie Lynn Spears all over the magazine covers. I’m real glad Sarah and Todd Palin are going to be there to help Bristol and her new family, but I really do not want to be a grandmother anytime soon or spend my retirement money helping to raise a grandchild and support its parents.
Flame away, folks.

“Mud slinging and lies” on liberal blogs are the standard for liberal blogs. If it wasn’t this situation, it would simply be another exploitation of the truth by those where the truth has no meaning. The truth , to a liberal, is not whether something is factually true or not, but what the purveyor wants the truth to be. This is nothing compared to the evil that is yet to be unleashed by the left in destroying anything or anyone who can keep them out of power.
volsense on September 1, 2008 at 1:07 PM
Well I’m sure all of us here, with the exception of AllahPundit and MB4, are pretty angry right now because of this news. Not only does this help the chances of getting the socialist elected President, but also the little brats on Daily Kos and all the other hate websites are going to have a field day with this. I guess all we can do now is just hope that this doesn’t screw up the works, and also hope that the Palin Family starts using BIRTH CONTROL!

I trust the MSM will dig as deeply, as quickly, into this story as they are doing with John Edward’s story… and the cover-up… and junk.
Shivas Irons on September 1, 2008 at 1:07 PM
So, interview with the family on some softball show to clean this up?
If Palin and McCain knew about this, I hope Bristol was consulted and consented to possibly being exposed. Perhaps a courageous sit-down interview with a network news show about how she was fully prepared to accept the consequences and knew her parents would always support her, etc. etc.
A hurricane during the convention, a teenage pregnancy, and who knows what else. Either God is mounting challenges to the Republican ticket so they may show their strength and courage to the country, or someone up there really, really doesn’t like John McCain. I mean, to put this in retrospect, John McCain’s horrible suffering in Vietnam allowed him to enter politics and make a major difference in the world. Is the McCain/Palin ticket simply destined to find success in the face of the greatest adversity?
Perhaps yes, folks.

Oy is right.
I think people’s initial reaction to this in the comments is looking at this the wrong way. This isn’t about what Palin’s adoring fans think about this. They weren’t going to change their minds about her no matter what she did. This is about how this will affect the “independents” and “undecideds”. That is how I took AllahPundit’s “gathering my thoughts” comment. His job is to think about how this affects things politically. Just because we all love Palin and she can do no wrong, does *not* mean that this couldn’t hurt her politically.
Off the top of my head, one line of attack on her could be that this proves that abstinence-only education is a complete failure and she has no leg to stand on to push it. Also, there is the “if she can’t even keep her own house in order, then how do we expect her to lead the country” line of attack.
One thing she could stress is that “pro-choice” also means choosing to have the baby, but then she has already been tagged as “anti-choice” and anti-abortion. I don’t think the McCain campaign wanted this election to focus on abortion or teen pregnancy, especially since he’s never been too gung-ho about social conservative issues.
Time will tell how this will affect the campaign. But this is *exactly* what I was talking about when I said we should not assume anything and there will be smears and lies and unexpected things to happen in the next 60+ days. Sure enough, here we go…
