Laura Bush on sexist attacks on Palin: “The other side is going to have to be particularly careful”

I still can’t quite get over how our pal Powers nailed this off the bat on Friday so maybe I’m seeing things that aren’t really there, but what does Laura Bush mean when she says, “That is something that we all looked at”? Was there a “trap” element to the pick, knowing/hoping that the sort of attacks to come would alienate centrists? Or does she simply mean that the sexism against Hillary was something she and Dubya took note of during the campaign? Either way, I’m really looking forward to our new feminist pope formally excommunicating Palin on behalf of The One. Nothing expresses righteous contempt for McCain’s identity politics quite like exploiting Hillary’s status as America’s foremost woman politician to appeal to women voters.
Incidentally, Mrs. Bush will speak tonight, although I expect she and Cindy McCain will focus mostly on appeals for hurricane relief. Exit question: Who’ll play Martin Luther to Hillary’s pontiff? Smart money’s on Althouse. Click the image to watch.

Agreed – and leave the kids out of it too. Laura Bush is a class act.

I hadn’t looked at who wrote this post, but when I read that line, I knew it wasn’t Ed.

She just exudes classiness.
I believe was referring to what everyone knew was going on with La Hillary, which the obvious media bias for Obama.
SouthernGent on September 1, 2008 at 2:28 PM
Wondering how the announcement of Bristol’s pregnancy is going to play out. My hope is that the unhinged attacks will create all sorts of sympathy for the Palins.
Jeez I feel so horrible for what they are going to have to go through. All conservatives, Republicans and supporters have to rally around her and shield them from as much as we can.
J.J. Sefton on September 1, 2008 at 2:29 PM
Laura rocks…and Palin and her grandkids=s potnetial “Camelot2″ and a victory for the culture of life over their culture of “punishment or death”….
this can work for us not against us.
sven10077 on September 1, 2008 at 2:30 PM
SG, you’re right, Laura Bush exudes class; such a contrast to Mrs. Baracky.
Where IS Michelle O. these days anyway, did they shut her away in a cellar somewhere?
Bishop on September 1, 2008 at 2:33 PM
BO has no where to go with this. His mother was pregnant with him at 17 and not legally married to anyone.
I like the Palin’s…Palin’s are US.
gracie on September 1, 2008 at 2:33 PM
I think it means that Gov. Palin was carefully vetted, that there are no surprises, and that they considered what if any effect it would have on the campaign. I don’t believe they based their pick on whether this would be a way to screw the donks. Personally, I wish they would recognize that Gov. Palin’s appeal is not limited to women.

Laura Bush = Class Act, Sarah Palin = Real American, John McCain = Genuine Hero
D0WNT0WN on September 1, 2008 at 2:35 PM
I think that’s the reference and not just she and W but we all as in all of us who recognized it for what it obviously was.
I’m really, really gonna miss our wonderful, caring classy First Lady.

Oops.
Class all the way.

I KNEW IT!!!! You are not over KP!!
OT here, but are you still writing in Hillary on the 4th?
Mcguyver on September 1, 2008 at 2:39 PM
Of course Hillary opposes Sarah Palin. If Palin wins, she’s the one who makes history and Hillary gets to be a footnote. Althouse doesn’t need to be Martin Luther. In this context, Palin is Martin Luther. Even a Catholic boy like me can figure that one out.

When Ted Kennedy was an adult Senator he turned a car into a submarine killing the secretary he had impregnated….
When Robert Byrd was an adult he was a kleagle in the KKK….
stay Classy Ralphie.
sven10077 on September 1, 2008 at 2:40 PM
But they won’t – foot in mouth disease runs rampant with the dems.
Laura Bush has more class in her little finger than Michele has in her entire body.
tru2tx on September 1, 2008 at 2:41 PM
You know – I really wonder if they give a flying horse patootie. These are Alaskans. They get up and head out to play in weather that most of us would consider a natural disaster. M guess is that alterations in their accustomed lifestyle, especially the requirement that they spend time in that figurative and literal swamp we call our nation’s capital, is a much greater sacrifice than having a few yahoos yelling inanely about them and their personal lives. Otherwise, let’s not presume, except out of our own good manners, that Bristol Palin is a shrinking violet. For all we know, she’s laughing at the losers and looking forward to a pretty darn great life.
CK MacLeod on September 1, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Until right now I was of the opinion that alphie should be allowed to stay here in the interest of differing opinions and comedy relief.
No longer. That last comment was disgusting and I just emailed Ed to excise the tumor that is alphie from this site.

RE: Trap
Did we set a trap for the left? Uh, no.
Did the left discover a length of rope, tie a noose, put their collective, progressive heads in the noose, through the free end of the rope up over the rafters, secure that end of the rope, climb up onto a table, and then, and only then
discover that they were about to collectively, progressively hang themselves?
Well, I’m not yet certain that they understand the hanging part yet, but yes to everything else.
rockhauler on September 1, 2008 at 2:42 PM
When the dust settles, it’d be interesting to compare the treatment of the Palins to the treatment of John Edwards when he was still in the Democratic primaries.
The difference in treatment is astounding. A year ago (or so), when rumors floated around about Edwards, lefty bloggers and lefty media couldn’t find a bag of Doritos at a convenience store. Fast forward about a year, and we have supposedly mainstream liberals (Andrew Sullivan and Alan Colmes, others?) making off-the-wall accusations and demanding incredibly odd offers of proof–within three days of the announcement of Palin as McCain’s running mate.
What’s wrong with these people?
BuckeyeSam on September 1, 2008 at 2:42 PM
Yes, but…
If Obama had a 17-year old daughter who got pregnant, wouldn’t some on our side be criticizing that and arguing that it was indicative of “liberal permissive” parenting?
Note again: some.
Perhaps not if she had married the father.
Still…
Politics is a nasty business to be sure; especially when the stakes are this high.

Hope you are right. McCain and Palin will have to deflect these attacks, jiu-jitsu like, and use it against the BO and sidekick.
J.J. Sefton on September 1, 2008 at 2:45 PM
Oh, the democrat party is in political meltdown mode.
Some of the democrats leadership is loading their guns as fast as they can then shooting themselves in one foot then in another.
Others are taking their shoes off so they can stick more of their feet in their mouth.
You’ve got Nancy Pelosi, not only our first Female Speaker of the House but ” Our First Mentally Challenged ” Speaker of the House, she’s a WMD ” woman with a mental disorder “, giving her idea of what the Catholic Church should do with abortion, How Senator John McCain’s V.P. Choice is so un-experienced, and refusing to let the House even vote on off shore drilling and drilling in Alaska.
Proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that she’s not qualified to manage a barrel of monkeys.
If President Bush and Vice President Cheney really wanted to do something for the McCain / Palin ticket, they would resign and leave the whole show to Nancy Pelosi and her Democrat cohorts..
By doing so they would assure a Republican in the White House for the next 16 to 20 years.
Think about it, President Nancy Pelosi??
Come on, She wouldn’t be in office long enough to skrew up much..

alphie’s right, traffic accidents are so gauche.
Jim Treacher on September 1, 2008 at 2:46 PM
This is just too enticing to ignore.
First, KP is not our pal.
I don’t know why this is hard to understand but…Laura meant that we all ‘looked at’ the sexism that HRC received by the press and the fawning Obama-lovers. It’s the sexism she would not have received by her peeps IF Obama was not running against Herself. Race trumps gender.
I also think that they made the connection that if the GOP picks a qualified woman, (yes, she is more qualified than even Her Royal Cowntess), we will also see a replay of the sexism–of the left. She didn’t necessarily predict that bloggers on conservative sites would rival that sexism. Apparently it has.
I hope that helps.
Christine on September 1, 2008 at 2:47 PM
By the way, Nancy Pelosi sure has STFU since Barry told her to. I guess she knows her place.

sven10077 on September 1, 2008 at 2:56 PM
Hillary and Chelsea got the kid glove treatment from the MSM while Bill was in office, and until the merging Kennedy/Ayers machine publicly backed Obama over Hillary and the MSM fell in conformity with the DNC machine.
So, Hillary fell from grace. We all witnessed it. That’s all the inference Laura gave to the question.
I remember when Laura’s Cowboy Cookie recipe won the national poll against Tipper Gore’s Ginger Snaps. It looks as though Al took it upon himself to prove just how much he likes Tipper’s cookies.
Laura Bush has exemplified the finest qualities of a First Lady and a wonderful mother of two beautiful daughters. Her enthusiastic endorsement of Palin was well stated. Laura certainly holds her own with inquisitional reporters, always the First Lady.

That means they’re ready to respond when the liberal media turns rabidly sexist. If they want to call that “setting a trap,” then fine. But that doesn’t reflect in the tiniest bit badly on our side.
The Bush administration was never very proactive about dealing with liberalism. But I think George Bush, Jr. learned well the singular lesson of his father’s defeat: You can always trust liberals – to be liberals.
When you KNOW somebody’s going to try to use any dirty trick possible, don’t bother trying to eliminate every opportunity you can foresee; if you try, the attack will still come, but it will always be something you didn’t expect.
The way to deal with inveterate back-stabbers is to be sure and set up perfect opportunities for them to screw you. Then you know they’ll take the bate every time – and when they do, you’ll always be ready for it.

And speaking of the class “alphie” refers to….
The esteemed Senator Obama recommends murder for unwanted grandchildren.
I think you protest about Governor Palin too much and with the wrong approach. This will help the GOP so keep it coming.
McCain and Palin are the real deal and Obama/Biden are NOT.

Laura Bush made the exact same mistake as Teddy did, sven.
Her driving killed someone.
She got away with it.

Laura Bush was not drunk, and refusing to rescue his pregnant secretary when within her power.

There is a police report of Laura’s accident available on line. I suggest you read it. There was no alcohol involved and she didn’t leave the scene. Argue all you want that Teddy wasn’t drunk, but there’s no disputing that he left the scene. Class stays, cowards leave.

Mistake? That’s what you call Ted Kennedy’s decision to save himself and leave the woman passenger in his car to drown, so that he could go back to where he was staying, sleep off his drunkenness, and call a lawyer?
Driving off the bridge was a mistake. Everything Kennedy did after that was deliberate — and deliberately evil.

I will miss Laura Bush, she has been a class act from day one.
Terrye on September 1, 2008 at 4:24 PM
You’re probably right that some would, but I think very few. It’s not completely analogous, but I saw very little jeering when Al Gore’s son was busted for speeding and drugs. I certainly didn’t make fun of it–we all know nice families who’ve had to deal with a young’un’s misdeeds or mistakes, and we all hope that with maturity and repentance, a kid can redeem himself.
Also I agree completely with Bishop, re: alphie.
juliesa on September 1, 2008 at 4:37 PM

More on my comment above: Gore’s son was an adult who committed a crime, not a 17 year old pregnant girl.
I really don’t like Al Gore, but it never entered my mind to take any pleasure in his family’s trouble, and I bet most people on the right felt the same.
Laura Bush rocks. We gladly welcome her home to Texas.

alphie, it would be appreciated that when you make these statements of facts, that you supply a link (such as this one to the story about Laura Welch’s accident). This will make it easier for those of us who aren’t up to date on all the BDS memes that exist. Of course that’s if you really want anyone to examine the information available and arrive at an informed opinion on how full of bile, venom and distortion your posts usually are.
As noted above, PLEASE keep posting your drivel. It’s like a reverse canary in a mine; if you’re spouting shite about something or someone then the subject being targeted is worthy of our admiration and praise.
