Gustav open thread: New Orleans levee being topped, none (yet) breached

posted at 1:15 pm on September 1, 2008 by Allahpundit

Hoping for the best, expecting the worst. It’s “only” a category two right now, but things are moving fast (no pun intended) so I thought I’d open a thread for rapid updating as news breaks. The levee that’s being topped is the one for the Industrial Canal, which, er, also happens to be the one that failed during Katrina.

Here’s video of Shep Smith impressively standing and talking into a microphone on location, and noting that the water’s already only three or four feet from the top of other levees that were built higher after Katrina to prevent flooding from the next ‘cane. The good news is, it looks like New Orleans will be spared a direct hit; the bad news is, it might not matter. If you’re the praying type, now’s the time.

Blowback

Water coming over the levees?

Wow, what a surprise during a hurricane. Who’d of thunk it?

madmonkphotog on September 1, 2008 at 8:50 PM

You could absolutely see this storm NOT coming.

First, it totally dropped out over Cuba. No reserve energy.

2nd, Very slow to regain circular speeds in spite of being over favorable (energy) waters.

3rd, Gains forward speed. Needs time to pick up energy but does not dwell.

BTW did I mention ENERGY ?

NOAA has excellent site to follow this but not that many wonks/non-wonks follow it. Y/T did. Get some practice for next ones as Sept/early Oct. are usual hurricane season.

You got it just right! Sick of hurricanes! They are just an invention of liberal fascists to enslave us.

Dunno your hobbies but mine are getting smarter; Lord knows I started low enough. Check out the NOAA Gustav site and join the fun. Sh*t, hurricanes have been around for longer than humans. But we are smarter than them.

O’Reilly tried to get a live field report from Geraldo, but they couldn’t get sound to go with the visual. I sent him an email telling him Geraldo sounds better when his microphone’s not working.

The sound man was taking refuge under Geraldo’s nose.

Safe, warm, and spacy enough you can play squash….I’ll have to look into joining them.

Speaking as an evacuee from New Orleans, I think FNC could have done better than inflicting idiots like Shep Smith and Geraldo on New Orleans. This mornings coverage included a long discourse about the levees breeching like the one beside Jackson Square. Problem with that is that particular levee is a river levee- never questionable and not part of the millions being spent to reinforce the other levees that protect the city from the Industrial Canal or Lake Pontchatrain.

Shep was the idiot who reported that New Orleans “dodged a bullet” with Katrina. Geraldo is simply an idiot. Where are the responsible reporters in the midst of these morons?

highhopes on September 1, 2008 at 10:36 PM

well as has been so helpfully pointed out regarding Sarah by our betters here….”journalism is for morons”…..

frankly I’d just be happy they don’t have ritual sacrifices and child rape going on downtown this time….

And scribbler, I have no idea where Cape Blanco is, but in addition to great big winds they evidently have great big blowhards. The last thing I need after enduring another (admittedly low level)hurricane today is to read how much better y’all are where ever the heck it is that you are.

So in the best well brought up southern flower of womanhood way I can dredge up, I say to you, Kiss….My…Ass.

Wow. You’ve proven your own ignorance. One takes it your minders have put a block on search engines on the computer they sometime allow you to use (after, one supposes, you’ve been a good girl and eaten all your supper).

Cape Blanco is the furthest west point of the lower 48. Our codes assume 150 mph winds, with 120 mph sustained.

I leave you to ponder just what state the westernmost point may be– but being charitable, I’ll tell you that it isn’t Florida.

well the “eye” is passing us slowly…wow how underwhelming a crisis this was…..

I’ve pi**ed bigger than this after a kegger.

Ja, das ist wahr!

That’s fine. But New Orleans has to be there. There is no other place for it to be. The port there handles more than 1/2 of all food exports, oil imports, etc. It’s perfectly situated for commerce.

lorien1973 on September 1, 2008 at 1:55 PM

There was a port in Texas at Indianola which was larger than the port at Galveston. Indianola was destroyed by a hurricane. The residents rebuilt the town. Another hurricane destroyed the town and the town was never rebuilt.

Johan Klaus on September 2, 2008 at 12:20 AM

Gustave seems to be under control but wait now there’s Hannah, then Ike, then…..Will it never end? The msm is wetting themselves in anticipation of a natural diseastor. How can anyone go about there lives while there are Americans in danger? Those Republicans ought to know better then to try. Big O missed an opportunity to stand on the levies and hold up his hand for the water to stop. As allah is fond of saying – oy.

Fuquay Steve on September 2, 2008 at 8:30 AM

wow, raylisa-That was my point. The press etal made a huge deal out of gustav because it was headed to new Orleans. The same storm headed anywhere else is virtually ignored.

I sent this link to HotAir but I guess nobody though it was worthy of attention. Since this is an open thread I’ll post a link to it here.

The sun has broken some records for lack of sunspots during last month (August 2008), that means we are in for some much cooler weather. But the idiots on Capital Hill including McCain are still talking about spending trillions of our dollars on “global warming.” Absolutely insane.

HotAir in my opinion really needs to stay on top of this story because Congress continues to spend millions of our tax dollars each year to fund so call “global warming research.” The threat to our economy in the form of a cap and trade system will never go away until the “research” funds are cut off. Once the money is dried up to propagate this fraud it will stop and not until then.
