Biden: Obama will surrender on nukes to Iran; Update: AOL Hot Seat Poll added

Ha’aretz reports that Joe Biden told Israeli leaders that they would have to accept a nuclear Iran if Barack Obama wins the Presidency. Israelis expressed “amazement” at Biden’s attitude:
Democratic vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden was quoted Monday as telling senior Israeli officials behind closed doors that the Jewish state will have to reconcile itself to a nuclear Iran.
In the unsourced report, Army Radio also quoted Biden as saying that he opposed “opening a additional military and diplomatic front.”
Biden, chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has long been considered strongly pro-Israel. His nomination as Barack Obama’s running mate had been expected to shore up the Democrats’ strength with U.S. Jewish voters.
For those unfamiliar with Ha’aretz, it doesn’t exactly have a knee-jerk conservative spin. In fact, it’s at best a center-left editorial board. They’re not terribly sympathetic to the Bush administration or most of its policies. They wouldn’t have much reason to simply make this up.
If anyone doubted that an Obama presidency would surrender to radicalism and hostile forces abroad, this should clinch it. Biden has pretty much told the Israelis that they’re on their own, and America won’t bother to support them against the nutcases in the region. If Obama and Biden don’t have the courage to face Iran’s nuclear ambitions, then exactly when will they defend American interests?
And what of our Western allies? Europe wants Iranian nukes stopped just as much as we do, especially since they’re more directly threatened by them. Obama and Biden talk about bolstering our alliances, but it looks like they’re more interested in leaving them holding the bag.
Hugh Hewitt sees this as further evidence that Obama is nothing more than the second coming of Jimmy Carter:
American supporters of Israel have to understand that Obama-Biden is a disaster for Israel’s security. It would be Carter II, but without the keen insight that Carter brought to Iran policy.
It’s worse than that. Carter at least had a deranged notion of justice as a foundation; this just looks like cowardice.
Update: The Jerusalem Post says this conversation took place three years ago:
Army Radio reported that the Delaware senator was heard saying in closed conversations with Jerusalem officials three years ago that he was firmly opposed to an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Biden, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, reportedly claimed that Israel would likely have to come to terms with a nuclear Iran. He reportedly expressed doubt over the effectiveness of economic sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic and said he was against the opening of an additional military and diplomatic front, saying that the US had more pressing problems, such as North Korea and Iraq.
The Ha’aretz report didn’t mention a time frame. Still, either way, the message is the same: Biden won’t stand up to Iran, and since Barack Obama chose him for his foreign-policy chops, one has to figure that Obama agrees. After all, Biden is the man who once proposed sending $200 million to Tehran to pacify the mullahs.

powerpro on September 1, 2008 at 9:20 AM
I’m going to be extremely pessimistic here:
I have 0% confidence that the Bush administration can prevent a nuclear Iran, since the left-wing media has successfully neutered the “with us or against us” Bush of yesterday. He and Condi are more interested in playing nice than getting things done. Wasn’t it just last week that the US said they wouldn’t support Israeli airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities?
Is it any wonder that Obama would continue that policy? Hell, we should be saying Obush, instead of McSame.

Methinks this is a quote taken out of context, given, of course, to that old pillar of credibility “unnamed officials”.

Dave Rywall on September 1, 2008 at 9:25 AM
Simple: they don’t consider Israel as ‘American interests’. In admitting in this way, I think Biden is telling the Israelis to take care of the issue themselves, likely between the election and Obama’s swearing in.
In other words, Biden is setting the foundation for a Middle East war, just so the blame for its start can be shifted to the ‘evil Bush;’. If he doesn’t realize that that’s what he’s setting up, he has an appalling and dangerous level of ignorance. Either way means this man is really dangerous.

Ha’aretz isn’t center at all. It has a couple of columnists who are not left, and all the rest of the Ha’aretz is staunchly left.
It is also one of the minor newspapers in Israel. It has an inflated reputation because the American MSM loves its editorial stance. They rarely quote the Jerusalem Post, which is center-right, or Ma’ariv, which is the largest daily newspaper in Israel, and had an English version online for a while. Remember every time you quote Ha’aretz you are NOT quoting mainstream Israeli opinion.

He probably wants them to take military action now. That way they can blame the attack and its aftermath on the–all together now–failed policies of George W. Booosh.

So would you rather have a VP who’s somewhat of a blank slate on her foreign policy views and judgment, or a guy with a 35 year track record of being dead wrong on every major foreign policy issue that has confronted the United States?
Seriously, between now and 10/6 Palin needs to memorize the timeline of every single decision Biden has gotten wrong and then just unload them when she gets the chance at the debate.
Dudley Smith on September 1, 2008 at 9:42 AM
So this is “change” that Obama claims to be bringing? Seems like Obama and Biden are just continuing all of the John Kerry foreign policy ideas and proposals he promised as president if they are elected.
wise_man on September 1, 2008 at 9:43 AM
twoarmman,
“well the chances of Israel attacking Iran before the election just increased quite a bit.”
More likely after the election, but before the Inauguration. They will not want to make it appear that they are trying to influence the election, and will not want to start the new Presidency (whoever it is) off with an Israel-initiated crisis.

ED, I wonder if it’s more a case of his having certain plans for taxes, and the military is not on the list. I am of the opinion that his Marxism is so ingrained that he could not conceive of allowing anything to get in the way of his crusade.
If elected, he will have, at most, eight years to sink a solid foundation of Socialism, which trumps all other considerations.

When asked by politico what a Obama presidency would be like, Secretary of State rice said that we’d(as a nation) would be fine.
I would like to see someone ask her this question again. A direct question that is in the context of – not just ‘will we still have all 50 our our states in 4 years’ but more to the fact of ‘given this most recent news (and read a direct quote with the implications) of Biden and Obama, how do you think this nation and others in the world would fare with an Obama/Biden presidency in light of the many challenges that are likely to come.
wise_man on September 1, 2008 at 9:48 AM

I don’t like McCain either, but it is articles like this that make me understand exactly why I’m going to vote for him. We simply cannot allow the neophyte and the plagiarist into the White House. rebecca on September 1, 2008 at 10:00 AM
There appears to be an “honor among thieves” dictum that guides the positions of professional politicians toward their political adversaries. This tendency to condemn with faint praise probably stopped her from declaring that he is an inexperienced, inept, extremely dangerous dolt.
rplat on September 1, 2008 at 10:00 AM
Which is surprising, since the left has been so concerned about Iran, and has promised Bush unbending political backing.
And you, Dave, you’ve been on these pages absolutely screaming for something to be done about Iran.
How could Bush possibly have been so pusillanimus?
Jaibones on September 1, 2008 at 10:03 AM
Was recently reminded of this from JFK’s inaugural:
Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East (crossing our fingers for Iraq, might include Turkey), Iran hates them directly and thru proxies of Hezbollah, Hamas, and the odd suicide bomber. If we don’t stand with Israel, who will, and where will we draw the line when freedom is threatened?
What seems to be going on is Biden is privy to Obama’s intentions, which hitherto Obama has kept to himself, basically lying by omission to get himself elected. But Biden has a bit more openness and honesty than Obama. So he let the cat out of the bag in this case.
Paul-Cincy on September 1, 2008 at 10:05 AM
Keeping in mind this is Joe Biden (who never missed an opportunity to keep his mouth shut) what possible advantage would there be for him to disclose this to the Israelis before the November election?
I have no doubt that an Obama administration would abandon Israel, I just don’t see why they wouldn’t keep it to themselves until after the election. Why p*ss off the Jewish voters? It’ll be interesting to see how Biden responds assuming anyone asks.

I have no doubt that Obama’s mindset on Israel is not much different than any typical middle eastern; peace will come to that region only when Israel ceases to exist.
My bet is on Israel to wait to see the election results in November, and then take the necessary steps to protect itself based upon the next American president. No way does Israel fail to wipe out Iran’s nuke capabilities if Obama wins. It’s all about who’s pulling Obama’s strings.

Wow, that’s a strong statement supported by absolutely sketchy evidence. These Ha’aretz reports regarding closed-door meetings are not always exceedingly accurate. Remember this gem?
You then provide supposed support by linking to your prior story regarding a brainstorming session wherein you treated a paraphrased summary as a quote (Arab world versus Islamic world).
Try maintaining the same level of skepticism, regardless of the subject. Allah does it.
Hubris on September 1, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Frankly, I have been disappointed with Bush’s Middle East policies — aided and abetted by Rice — for a long time. To some extent, my support for McCain is based on replacing some of Bush’s wavering, hesitating and plain old dropping the ball with a more active (and pro-Israel, stop-sucking-up-to-the-Saudis) set of policies.
Letting Osama Obama and Biden anywhere near the White House would be a total disaster. I wouldn’t trust either one of them with control of a weapon sharper than a worn crayon.
MrScribbler on September 1, 2008 at 10:43 AM
Part of the news here was that Biden appears to have conceded that Iraq and North Korea were more important national security issues for the U.S. than Iran or Osama bin Laden.
Quite a change from the idea Iraq was just a “distraction”.
Biden has completed the transition from neocon centrist to far Left defeatist/appeaser. I think that puts his former positions into more context. They were more akin to Hillary Clinton’s ‘tough’ foreign policy — positioning for a presidential run back when Democrats thought firmness abroad was the path to victory in the general election.
Biden has tossed all that aside, as easily as Hillary did, confirming the emptiness of their earlier views. Vapid Democrats grasping for power at any price.
Anil Petra on September 1, 2008 at 10:44 AM
Amazing. Biden hasn’t a clue what taking that position means. If Iran has the bomb, what about other states? Does he care if the Saudi’s make them, or Syria? What about Egypt? What is he going to say to them, that the USA will protect them?
Will he change his cavalier attitude if Venezuela starts developing them? What will he say to Mexico? Columbia?
Considering the policy concepts Biden has a habit of blurting, I wouldn’t be surprised he actually added not opening another “diplomatic front” to that of a military front, but what the heck does that mean? Will we engage in only one problem at a time in some linear fashion if Biden is as persuasive in an Obama Admin as Obama hopes he’ll be, or does Obama plan to just have him attend funerals?
Biden doesn’t think past the nose on his face on the day he tries to look at it. I wish McCain had chosen a fifth grader just so I could watch the kid wipe the floor with Biden in a debate.
Dusty on September 1, 2008 at 10:46 AM
Rice has been disappointing as Secretary of State and even more as a “team player” for Bush. She’s been co-opted by the Arabists at State and is unable to control the incessant leaks and administration backstabbing that has been rampant at State for decades. IMHO State is one of America’s major enemies, right up there with the mainstream press and the leftists. Enemies like Iraq, Iran and Korea we can deal with, we’ve got the best military in the world. Our domestic enemies have the Constitution to protect them.

Recently I received an email from one of the best Iranian activists out there; a person who does her homework and has never reported one hair out of place. This is what she reported on Biden:
“Mr. Biden’s on-going flirtations with the Mullahs over the years are not only not ignorable, they’re horrifying. His willingness to attend fundraisers (for his senatorial re-election) at the houses of rather questionable millionaire Iranians in Belair, who are founders of the Islamic Faith (Iman) Foundation and known to have deep ties with the Mullahs and whose specific task is to promote the archaic-minded, patriarchal despots reigning over Iran, is disconcerting to say the least. Also Mr. Brooks has clearly failed to look into the other Iranians who Mr. Biden has supported vs. the one who he has refused to connect with, lest they take him to task for his connections to the Qom-on-Belair Iranians. Not one Iranian that I know of, who is against dialoguing with the Mullahs has ever been bestowed an audience with this foreign policy maven of a Senator. Mr. Biden’s “discrete” meetings with various envoys of the Mullacracy, in European cities, in the presence of disreputable Mullah-supporting members of the European Parliament is also well-known among us Iranians who do have very decent proposals which Mr. Biden has recalcitrantly refused to consider.
Another unfortunate situation is Mr. Biden’s connection to one Houshang Amir-Ahamdi who though a professor at Rutgers University is the founder of a rather objectionable organization called the American Iranian Council (AIC) – which has some of the shadiest characters who were involved in the oil-for-food scandal on the various boards. Amir-Ahmadi is an admitted supporter of the regime in Tehran and goes back and forth to Iran to meet with the Supreme Leader of the Khomeinist regime, Khamenei himself, as well as the holocaust-denying, Israel-threatening Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Mr. Amir-Ahmadi in fact nominated himself for president of Iran in 2005. I can go on about Mr. Amir-Ahmadi but in the interest of time, I will suffice it to these few comments. Mr. Biden has been flown to various events and lodged at the most expensive hotels by Mr. Amir-Ahamdi and his group in order to promote the feckless and rather destructive notion of normalization of relations with a regime that continues to execute innocent Iranians of all ages, sexes, creeds, religions and backgrounds.”
We Iranians know just how deep Mr. Biden’s friendly relations with the Mullahs has gone and frankly it is an embarrassment that he has not only not been investigated on these issues but that he has not been questioned openly and doggedly by the American press, for hard answers.
