Awesome: Top Hillary supporter defects to McCain

posted at 3:33 pm on September 1, 2008 by Allahpundit

Lest you doubt whether he’s really a diehard Democrat or merely, a la those pro-Obama “lifelong Republicans” the media always seems to find, a conservative who’s donated to the left on occasion, here’s his page at Open Secrets. True blue.

Coale may be the first Hillaryite I’ve heard of who’s supporting Maverick mainly because he’s a maverick and not because of some exaggerated sense of grievance over Hillary’s treatment — although the line about the party being taken over by MoveOn.org is tantalizing in its implications. Exit quotation: “I think she’s great.” Click the image to watch.

Welcome, Mr Coale! Bring your friends!

Isn’t he married to Greta Van Susternern?

Jonah Goldberg:

To explain Miss Van Susteren’s perspective, many critics point to her real partner. John Coale*, her husband as well as her law partner, is a self-described “ambulance chaser” and has enthusiastically earned himself one of the most nefarious reputations in the country. In 1984 he acquired the nickname “Bhopal Coale” by being the first lawyer to hop on a plane to India to sign up gas-leak victims who couldn’t even read their retainer documents.

American Lawyer magazine called him “a symbol for everything wrong with the plaintiff’s bar.” In 1987 the same magazine awarded Coale its Most Frivolous Suit Award: He had sued his tailor, on the grounds that the sub-par work on his shirts had subjected him to “public humiliation . . . severe emotional distress, and embarrassment.” The West Virginia Bar tried to disbar both John Coale and Greta Van Susteren for their allegedly unethical behavior in soliciting the families of coal-mine accident victims, among others.

Politics makes for strange bedfellows.

Karl on September 1, 2008 at 3:44 PM

Interesting…. I watch “On the Record” often, and I thought I detected discomfort on Ms. Van Susteren’s part with Sen. Obama remaining in his church during 20 years of the Jeremiah Wright ravings. I wondered if perhaps it made her less comfortable with Sen. Obama as a presidential candidate.

Welcome Mr. Cole. Glad to have you. You are a credit to your party for rising against tabloid candidacies and joining with reason.

I promise that this party will not welcome you with buckets of piss, though I cannot say that your former party won’t try for parting gifts of this sort.

Damiano on September 1, 2008 at 3:52 PM

MoveOn will run over their candidate by November tho, it’s what they do..

Ozprey on September 1, 2008 at 3:53 PM

This is cause for hope; not because he campaigns for McCain, but because of the reasons he listed. That means people are thinking about what Americans are concerned with as well.

Jill0166:

I’ll sit back and wait for the wise (non-troll mind you) critics to infest this thread as they open our eyes to all the pitfalls and pratfalls this “seemingly” “good news” will undoubtedly inspire in the MSM.

The phrase he used about Republicans being better organized resonated with me. One thing I have noticed in all our meetings is that parliamentary rules are strictly adhered to. This is very pleasing to my Law and Order conservative heart.

Nah, he’s completely useless.

Slublog on September 1, 2008 at 4:00 PM

This is only a trickle of what is yet to come. I expect many more to jump ship and get behind McCain/Palin before the election.

And all this fuss about Bristol’s pregnancy? That too will pull at the heartstrings of some of those on the left and will cause many to rally behind her.

God is good. Life is good.

Obama is toast. Day old, dried out and burnt toast at that.

It would say a lot about the current state of the dem party and the influence of groups like MoveOn. I think most moderate and traditional dems are finding these groups are taking their party in directions they are not willing to go. Just as most of us are not entirely that crazy about McCain, many of us were sitting on the fence until his veep pick energized us.

I watch occasionally, when Greta covers politics rather than crime stories (which I wish she could do more often). I really admire Greta’s intelligence and professionalism, and I find her quite likable personally. She’s careful not to inject her politics into her show. I’ve heard she and hubby are/were really tight with the Clintons, but I thought I detected some serious reservations about Obama. I suspected she might be coming our way someday. And I for one would be proud to have her on the team, even if just for one election.

I wonder if it’s realistic to hope large numbers of moderate (Reagan) Dems will jump the MoveOn ship. Maybe this will start the ball rolling.
