Alan Colmes should read for comprehension
posted at 2:35 pm on August 31, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Normally, I’d ignore most of what Alan Colmes has to say, because when he’s not appointing himself the arbiter of proper motherhood, he’s rewriting history. However, his post at Liberaland today isn’t so much offensive to Allahpundit and me as it is revealing of Colmes’ lack of intellectual heft. Take a look at this laugher, emphasis mine:
The idea that you can’t question Sarah Palin’s judgment because she has a Down Syndrome baby is right up there with the outrage some feel the minute you question a man who was held in a prison camp for five years. Yet, the same outraged protectors of our values have no trouble questioning Obama’s judgment: a nodding acquaintance with someone in his neighborhood, his choice of a church, his very faith, and then they blamed that on the Clintons). The question was even raised as to whether he is hiding the truth of his birth certificate. In fact, hotair.com, the the site most outraged about what I posted, was one of the prime venues of the birth certificate debate, among others concerning Obama’s “judgment”. And let’s not forget the attacks on Michelle Obama and the insinuations that she doesn’t really love her country.
Not only were we almost totally disinterested in the birth certificate debate, what little AP and I wrote about it debunked the meme. I’ll save you the search of our archives that “journalist” Alan Colmes neglected and give a list of our posts:
So we wrote four whole posts in more than two months on this topic, all of them after the Obama campaign released the birth certificate, and every single time to say that this was a really dumb topic and that conservatives should abandon it. It would have taken Colmes all of ten minutes to check this out before writing his post, but he’s too busy concocting smears to bother with minor tasks like fact-checking.
I used to respect Colmes. No longer.
Update (AP): I know Ed’s written other posts debunking lies about Obama, but here’s a few more of my own: Defending him from McCain’s accusation that he didn’t visit the troops at Landstuhl because he couldn’t bring the media; defending him from allegations that he secretly leaked the prayer he left at the western wall; defending him from the dopey rumors about dual citizenship; and even defending him from pedestrian inaccuracies about his tax plan. But none of that fits the Narrative about a nonstop smear orgy against The One at conservative websites, so lay them aside and rock on, Alan.
Update (Ed): And just to address Colmes’ other point, yes we do focus on Barack Obama’s judgment. Who made that a campaign issue — indeed, even the main basis for his campaign? Three guesses.

Colmes should consider going back to his former successful stand-up comic career. As a political commentator, he is a joke. As a stand-up comic he was even less of a joke…but less harmful and hurtful.

Common tactic tho. Lie, and whether it comes out refuted or not the damage is already done. On the left it has to be practically considered a “skill” by now.

Such utter BS flying in the face of facts.
Also, everyone makes judgments, it just seems that Obama’s tend to be bad and wrong.

I’m puzzled why you used to respect Colmes, Ed. Regardless, this is typical for Colmes. If you watch H&C a few times you’ll note that Colmes is a master of distortion and frequently says things in his attacks on the right which are easily disproved.
We’re not allowed to lie (no problem there), so why should Colmes be allowed to knowingly and willingly interleave falsehoods into his arguments?

Let’s play this by Colmes’s rules, Ed. We haven’t seen a proper birth certificate yet — among many other missing/altered documents, including medical reviews, records of his “accomplishments,” &C — from Barack Hussein Obama. Even if these items exist, he hasn’t put them out there.
And nothin’ for nothin’, Ed, but the fact that HA is “the site most outraged about what I posted” should be a mark of shame on the whole so-called “liberal” movement and the MSM in general.
Keep up the good work!

I have never had any respect for Alan Colmes because he is a stranger to facts and the truth.
Also, I must have missed the M.D. after Colmes’ name that gives him the right to question Palin and her doctor’s decision to do what she did. Also, since Alan has personally carried and given birth to 4 or 5 children himself, I am sure that gives him the right and knowledge to criticize Palin and how she takes care of her baby.
Colmes is foul and shouldn’t be on FOX at all.

Like the judgement he has shown in befriending an unrepentant terrorist, choosing a radical racist as a pastor, and thinking that swooning crowds of Germans give him “experience”, along with living in Indonesia at age 8 (when his buddy was bombing American buildings).
Obama’s judgment is a joke.
He didn’t even have the judgment the left thinks he has, as several interviews show that he hasn’t always been for the cut-and-run defeatism that is so popular on the Left.
This whole Obama episode is a joke, and I’ll be very happy when it is simply a distant memory of how America almost made a very big mistake.

Alan Colmes is the typical lefty who took up the journalism career as screen for his unabashed selling of the personal political preferences under the guise of dispassionate observer.
It’s Colmes and other lefties like him that created the “just asking questions” post-modern relativist meme while pushing despicable smears, long before the troofers, in their kindergarten-ish application of it, ruined it for the ‘I failed first grade’ lefties in the MSM.

Let’s be honest: Alan Colmes looks like the Ferengi from Star Trek, he’s an intellectual lightweight who Newt and others tear to shreds on a regular basis, and no one takes him seriously.
His blog, “liberal land” is very fitting, because it sounds exactly where the world’s liberal trolls should go to play. He’s like the kid who starts a fight with the big boys, and then you occasionally feel sorry for him when he gets the pulp beat out of him.

I have American Indian blood in me going back to the Central California coast. The acorn was king back then.
That whole critic of Palin working with while pregnant/new baby is such absolute BS. Pioneer and Indian women typically had to work up to giving birth and then VERY soon if they survived the pregnancy. Indian mothers typically kept their baby with them as they worked. Did anybody see that wonderful pic of Palin holding Trig in her arms and signing that piece of legislation? I’ve heard that the Native-American tribes in Alaska like Sarah too.

With due respect to John Edwards, there are two Americas, at least in the sphere of morality. There is the culture of death, and the culture of life.
If democrats like Alan Colmes want a debate on eugenics, I say bring it on. The democrats ought to be exposed for what they are.
The left is vulnerable on the eugenics movement, which they’re still trying to whitewash out of American history; so let’s remind ourselves: birth control and abortion were sold by left wingers as a way to cleanse the gene pool from the influences of African Americans, and that’s not a very hopey-changey topic to bring up at this sensitive time.

I never thought Colmes had much in the way of gray matter, but there was a time I respected his views as authentic. Now it seems, disregarding inconvenient facts, he says whatever he thinks might be expedient to undermine his opposition. He speaks without regard to veracity, but only to produce the intended effect.
And to make a bad thing worse, he does this with a tedious over-reliance on talking points, no matter how mindless or unresponsive they may be to the issue at hand.
petefrt on August 31, 2008 at 3:34 PM
It sounds like he’s upset. I imagine that the entire Democratic party is very upset…Sarah is a game-changer. But belonging to a racist church and partnering with unapologetic terrorists who ‘wish they had done more’ are both relevant issues.

Colmes couldn’t take the heat, he’s taken the original post down. I guess Colmes doesn’t stand behind what he publishes. Oh, by the way, he blamed conservatives for leaving “vile comments” at his site as the reason for removing the post. He is a liar, I saw the comments (that are no longer available for viewing) and there was nothing “vile” about them. Just a lot of hard hitting truth in those comments that called Colmes out for the hypocritical smear artist that he is and pointing out the ignorance of his post. For example, Down Syndrome is genetic, which is present at conception, it has nothing to do with “pre-natal” care as Colmes falsely accused. Colmes was rightfully hammered on that point time and time again within the comments which are no longer available. They have been scrubbed from his pathetic little blog site because they so thoroughly rubbed his nose in shame. He couldn’t take the heat, so he did what liberals do, he ran and blamed others.
Wizbang has this to say about taking down published articles and I couldn’t agree more. Oh, and note to Colmes, learn to spell plethora.

Something changed after the 2004 election. I suspect there was an aggressive campaign by the left to have him removed because he wasn’t — uh, how can I say this — as enthusiastic [read: hateful] as they were. And I suspect Mr. Colmes took their criticisms to heart, and consequently sold his soul. He’s turned into a beast.
Nevertheless, I think the real Alan was the one I knew before, and I suspect he’ll come back. I sense there’s a conscience in there.

Alan Colmes interviewed Jack Kemp on Friday and grilled him on Sarah Palin. “Palin said she knows nothing about Iraq,” Colmes read to Kemp.
Yes, it’s true that Alaska Governor Palin hadn’t talked directly to generals in the field to form an opinion on Iraq, but the facts are that she commands the Alaska national guard unit and that she has a son serving in Iraq.
Colmes simply left out these facts to create a leading question. That his m.o. and it’s dishonest.
barrypopik on August 31, 2008 at 3:47 PM
I had gone to Colmes’s blog, seen the criticism of HA about the birth certificat nonsense, and wondered, “WTF?” HA never echoed that claim.
Beyond that, what I think is absurd is Colmes’s additional remarks:
First, “nodding acquaintance”? Is Colmes in complete denial? People don’t host political “coming-out” parties for “nodding acquantainces.” When Stanley Kurtz of National Review is finished reviewing documents relating to Obama and Ayers, he’ll have confirmed an extensive relationship.
Second, “choice of church”? If McCain had been found to be a member of a comparable white supremacist church, he’d be retired and keeping company with Alaskan caribou. I’ll not rant on about the hatred, lies, and un-American sentiments preached from the pulpit in Obama’s church.
Third, Obama’s “very faith.” Yes, he says he’s a Christian, but he doesn’t believe the critical tenet of that faith. He can believe whatever he wants and practice whatever faith he chooses. But he is not a Christian. Instead, he’s what I think is called a universalist. Obama does not believe that the belief that Christ died for the sins of all is the only way to salvation. He believes that there are many roads to salvation. I’m not forcing Christianity on anyone, but for Obama to pass himself off as a Christian is a lie. It’s simply not the case.
BuckeyeSam on August 31, 2008 at 3:47 PM
At the risk of over-reaching, the subtext in all this is that the State has an interest in your sustaining the life of someone they consider an inconvenient burden.
Add to this that leftists are very anxious to turn health care, including all it’s life or death decisions, over to a government central planning committee.
Are you over age 60?

But vile comments. Uh .. no. As a matter of fact, I was quite proud of what I presumed to be primarily Hot Air cats showing much more class in their criticisms than Colmes did in his post (or now in his response).

Tread carefully here, friend. Unless you have the singular charism of reading people’s hearts, this is a judgment best left in the hands of God.

Why are we arguing facts here? Facts have no bearing on liberal arguments. Just lie, lie some more, and finish off with a lie. That’s liberals at a debate.

I agree.

What an idiot. It always amazes me when liberals let their visceral instincts take control of their cognitive functions. They figure that the best way to back up their positions is to completely and thoroughly demonize their opponents by attributing to them the absolute worst traits encompassed by their fringe political brethren. I understand that there are conservatives who lower themselves to this tactic, as well, but they generally are the fringe, and don’t hold as high of a media profile as Mr. Colmes. He really stepped in big, stinky pile this time.

THAT he did, blessed capricorn.
ManlyRash on August 31, 2008 at 3:57 PM
You respected Colmes? Why? As a human being, sure, he deserves respect. Regarding politics, he’s a joke and always has been.

WizBang has a screen shot of some of the post–no comments in it.
If you go to last night’s Hot Air headline comment thread about Colmes’ post, you’ll see some of the comments from there were cut and pasted into the thread:
Alan Colmes rockets into the gutter

Hehehe. I imagine he probably sits in a utility closet with his liverwurst sandwich and 2% chocolate milk, if that big bully Hannity doesn’t beat him up and take it first.
It’s hard to imagine anyone more qualified to do his job, that being painting a big day-glo target on his ass and smiling foolishly.

You are exactly right and the people that murmur for government ran health care don’t understand this. Personal life and death decision will be taken out of your hands in the name of the “common good” otherwise known as collectivism.
If socialized medicine was the fact in America would Sarah Palin’s child still be alive? That’s an honest question. If the government does for our health care system what it has done for our schools, God help us. Socialized medicine would be the boldest step ever toward controlling every tiny and large aspect of your life.

It has nothing to do with reading. Alan Colmes needs to comprehend for comprehension.

Alan is Mr. Gesticulation…I love how it looks like he’s getting tastered when he gets cornered….
herky jerky as hades and all jerk in spades.

This little slander of Alan Colmes is monstrous intolerable. I really think that either Allahpundit or Ed Morrissey should challenge Alan Colmes to a duel. I will tie their cravats for them before they face off so that they will look their best.
