Video: Huckabee on Palin’s readiness

posted at 10:45 am on August 30, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

I have always liked Mike Huckabee, even though in the end I didn’t support him in the run for the Presidency. He has a disarming manner that belies real steel underneath, and last night he proved his value to the GOP in a debate with Alan Colmes. Colmes asked Huckabee whether he really thought Sarah Palin was ready to be President on Day 1, and Huckabee gave the answer of the day:

AC: Do you believe that Sarah Palin is ready, Day One, if God forbid something happens to John McCain?

MH: I think she’s far more ready to be President if something happens to McCain than Barack Obama would be if something doesn’t happen to McCain.

Colmes tried to make the argument that McCain didn’t show leadership by making this “reactive” pick of Palin.  Huckabee laughed this off, saying that Colmes must have been invited inside McCain’s head.  However, it’s worthwhile to ask, as I did in my previous post, who really had the reacticve pick.  Obama picked Joe Biden after the Caucasus blew up and he floundered in his response, while McCain looked prepared, informed, and ready to lead.  Suddenly, Biden went from “I’m not the guy” to the running mate within 96 hours.

Would McCain have picked Palin if Obama had selected Hillary Clinton?  It may have played against the choice, only because McCain would not have wanted to appear reactive.  In this case, he has plenty of reasons for selecting Palin, mostly because of her record on reform and her executive experience, which both Democrats lack entirely.  He wanted to “shake up” the race, as ABC reported, but that’s not a reactive impulse, either.

And I find it exceedingly strange that Colmes would accuse the first Republican to name a woman as running mate of not showing “leadership”.

Blowback

I heard Huckabee praise Palin but he had to work in a dig at Romney, too. The man hates Mormons and it has gotten more than old.

Colmes is always exceedingly strange when it comes to questioning republicans. Alan is a dead giveaway to the inner core of the Democrat party. A hack.

I second your analysis of Huck. He’s got some real strengths. Something about him just irritates me so much. I think “Huckster”. Or maybe “Ah, Shuckster”. Too often he’ll resort to a place in him that lack seriousness. That’s unacceptable in a prez. He should never be prez or VP. But when he wants his words are very clear and powerful. He reminds me a bit of Mitt! that way. McCain/Palin 2008

LOL

Mike nailed poor Allan again. I actually feel bad for him since he has to defend the dim bulbs day after day.

Blake on August 30, 2008 at 10:52 AM

Yep, he was digging at Romney in interviews both on Thursday and Friday. Hopefully, they won’t end up together stuck in an elevator during the St. Paul convention.

What Palin’s pick does do, however, as Huck’s enthusiam shows, is give McCain a far better chance of having a strong Get Out the Vote effort in November, as long as his new VP pick can navigate the waters of (fair and unfair) media attacks and scrutiny. GOTV by Republicans in 2004 was strong enough to offset the Democrats’ efforts in swing states like Florida and Ohio; this year, while Obama’s supporters have been fanatical to the point of cultism, most of McCain’s support among the base has been reactive to the Democratic nominee, instead of pro-active to Maverick. The Palin pick changed that, and barring any future shrapnel targeted at the conservative wing of the GOP by McCain, means he’s more likely to get not just donations, but GOTV volunteers working when it counts in late October and on Election Day in November.

Sarah Palin likes eating caribou … and Huckabee liked eating squirrel.

(This video of Huck’s opinion on Sarah was awesome. Sorry for the squirrel comment, Governor Huckabee. Well, maybe just a little.)

Well! I don’t like Mike Huckabee, but he made a decent case there. A very decent case.

S. Weasel on August 30, 2008 at 11:00 AM

Let’s see; Obama is about CHANGE, so he picks a 30+ year Washington insider as a running mate, yeah that’s CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN. On the other hand, McCain picks a relatively unknown female governor who has shown some ethics and that’s not considered “leadership” or “CHANGE”. Yeah, right. What’s your next shot Barry?

GarandFan on August 30, 2008 at 11:01 AM

As I said in another post… the “Barracuda” has more executive experience than Senators Obama, Biden and McCain combined.

Foreign policy experience? Well, that brings to mind another governor without foreign policy experience that defeated the Soviet Union… Four of the last five presidents were governors without foreign policy experience.

Foreign policy experience… Big whoop….

CC

CapedConservative on August 30, 2008 at 11:01 AM

Huckabee hits the nail on the head by pointing out Palin’s executive experience, and Obama bin Biden’s lack of it.

Remarkable that Colmes things being a commander in the Navy is not executive experience. Isn’t Lt. Commandeer and above considered an Executive Officer?

IN fact, McCain was Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of the VA-174 squadron.

Huckabee has so much potential for greatness. Too bad he harbors so many personal grudges and such class-warfare inspired resentment.

As for Alan Colmes, his claim that McCain’s military experience (say, as a Commanding Officer)is not comparable to executive experience is quite simply idiotic.

ronsfi on August 30, 2008 at 11:29 AM

A few points.

First, if you can keep Huck and Mitt separate and talking about general conservative matters, they are tremendous surrogates. They are calm, collected, not loony, and pleasant–all as they’re shoving a baseball bat up your a**.

Second, Colmes is to conservative guests as the Washington Generals are to the Harlem Globetrotters–he’s a hapless loser.

Third, here’s the “ready to lead” poster that Ed needs to create for us:

Picture on right side of poster: Palin discharging a rifle.

Picture on left side of poster: Ed’s great photo of Barry body surfing in Hawaii as the roof was falling in on Georgia.

Caption: “How do you think is ready to lead?”

BuckeyeSam on August 30, 2008 at 11:29 AM

Just got back from the HufPo site guys, (I need to take a shower right after I post this however and only slightly cut and bruised), they are all running around like kookaroaches when the light gets turned on.

This caught my eye over there from one of their so-called writers:

“But what I really want to talk about is her hair. Can someone please get this woman to a SuperCuts? What is that thing on her head? I admit, I am completely jealous of her flawless Linda Carter Skin. And I fully expect her to take out that plastic hair clip, pull off her glasses, rip off her blazer to reveal either Wonder Woman or Demi Moore in Disclosure. But the hair has GOT TO GO.”

Can you say “Heerrre kitty, kitty, kitty”?

Now that’s desperation!

Over.

1GooDDaDDy on August 30, 2008 at 11:30 AM

If Palin really cracks the books and spends four days in Europe, she could have as much foreign policy experience as Obama by Inauguration Day.

If McCain surrounds her with 600 volunteer foreign policy advisers (double Obama’s, sans Winnie the Pooh fans) she could be more ready, owing to her almost tens years of executive experience, than Obama by Election Day.

Oh yeah, and the fact that Palin isn’t a Marxist means she won’t have the double duty of saying she’s doing one thing while trying to hide that she’s doing another and making those two fit together without looking like a liar all the time, so she’ll get a heck of a lot more done.

I don’t think he should have ducked Colmes’ assertion that McCain’s military command didn’t equate to political executive experience. He should have said “Maybe, maybe not, but it’s more that Obama has.”

He also should have acknowledged that the VP usually is selected to round out the guy at the top. Biden is there to give Obama foreign policy gravitas; Palin is there to shore up the executive experience, solid conservatism, and maybe pick up a few [more] disaffected Hillary voters.

Erstwhile, before lying, earn your own educational experience visiting non-denominational Christian services where every Christian sect enjoys equal rights; individuals enjoy their own tastes yet there is no favorite flavor per congregational creed.

To feign dishonesty as illegal for one’s defense for spreading a lie shows contempt for honesty, inability to adhere to morality, and avid corruption abusing the legal system “because you could”.

Two excellent comments. I lost bladder control.

You are so right about the adjunct-prof assessment. I’m a lawyer with an LL.M. and saw plenty of adjunct profs in my LL.M. program. Many are capable, but it’s a part-time gig.

Obama, in truth, should be characterized as “a lecturer,” but his U of C colleagues conspired to “clarify” that he was considered a “professor.” Evidently, he’s the first “professor” in U of C law faculty history who didn’t appear to be on any tenure track and who wasn’t required to publish any scholarly writings–like a typical law professor would.

When Obama’s U of C record began to get scrutinized, his former colleagues–a bit embarrassed by the attention–didn’t want the public to find out that they’d allowed this clown to hang around and teach without requiring much more of him than to have him teach a class or two and grade the final exams for his course(s). So they fudged his job description. All the same, he sounds like a “lecturer” at best, an “adjunct” at wordst, but certainly not a “professor.”

But I guess all this setting the record straight is as divisive as Stanley Kurtz’s efforts to gain access to (and now to review) the records documenting Obama’s relationship with William Ayers.

Have those at HuffPo seen her when she wears her hair down?

I’m afraid I have to go smoke a cigarette…and I don’t smoke.

lol

guys, huckabee can be an excellent ally or a dangerous enemy. why on earth would you go out of your way to make him your enemy? he didn’t hang out wiyh ayers for 20 years

i never supported him in the primary. but that doesn;t mean i think i should have the right to purge him from the party. and he’s happy about the Palin pick and fired up to bring his considerable talents on board to help get McCain/Palin elected.

Great appearance, and I’d love to see more of them.

funky chicken on August 30, 2008 at 12:04 PM

But I guess all this setting the record straight is as divisive as Stanley Kurtz’s efforts to gain access to (and now to review) the records documenting Obama’s relationship with William Ayers.

BuckeyeSam on August 30, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Well trying to find out who the most unqualified candidate in US history is in bed with is “just hating”….

if Barry wins he is going to make Bill Clinton’s misuse of DoJ and IRS look tame.

Mark my words.

I may try to beat the Falcon yet….

nah the thing is it’d be a lot easier for the GOP to do it itself since they have Lexis-Nexis Fu….

GOP has mastered many arts the left would consider “unnatural”….

sven10077 on August 30, 2008 at 12:07 PM

Finally: a Huckabee thread that will be filled with less hatred than most.

carbon_footprint on August 30, 2008 at 11:13 AM

Do you think people just woke up one day and decided to not like mike Huckabee? He started it with his petty little digs at people and thoughtless jokes about suicide and other things.

There came a point when Mike Huckabee could no longer be given the benefit of the doubt that his heart was golden.

He just said too many mean spirited things about others.

[Poptech on August 30, 2008 at 12:01 PM]

At least get it right. Obama was hardly a Senior Lecturer on Constitutional law one year after he graduated from law school.

I’ll tell you, though, someone who’s employed his time as a law professor, an attorney, and a state senator, all at the same time, sounds to me more like a job title collector, resume padder, and a lightworker at all of those positions.

Like you and so many strong Americans, I’m voting for Palin because she is not corrupted, she has managed years of executive experience with 80% approval ratings completing her campaign promises within 2 years of her governorship, and she complements McCain this POTUS election with conservative gusto and grace, and she’s enable America’s innate strengths to produce national successes. Sarah Palin is indeed a rising star worth supporting.

Because of the class warfare populism rhetoric. He is tired and divisive, and hopefully he goes away soon. There are many more brighter lights that do her justice.

Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever seen Hot Air readers say so many kind things about Huckabee before. I guess there’s a first for everything. I’m liking this though.

Huckabee is an overall asset for the party when he is in control.

Mitt made him out of control.

I’m sure if he starts believing she threatens his political ambitions he’ll find something not to like about her and let everybody know it, ad nauseum. For now, glad he’s not bashing her. I wish they’d interviewed Sarah instead.

thecountofincognito on August 30, 2008 at 12:34 PM

Mike Huckabee is a great man and was the obvious best choice for VP.

That being said I will support a Mccain/Palin ticket in order to defeat obama.

It’s such a shame that so many pathetic, Christian bashing, hate mongers feel so comfortable bashing the entire base of the republican party for their religious beliefs.

Keep it up…maybe next time you can find out if you atheists (a whopping 3% of this country) can win elections on your own.

Poptech:

Then you should at least get her bio correct…..

Sarah Palin

Poptech has it correct up to the point of Political Experience.

Then some clarification may be needed…..

Political Experience:

- Elected to Wasilla City Council… twice… against actual opponents… you know, didn’t have to have opponents eliminated from the ballot
- Elected to Mayor of Wasilla… twice… against actual opponents where she made actual executive decisions
- Chair, Alaska Conservation Commission
- President, Alaska Conference of Mayors
- Elected Governor of Alaska… where she beat the incumbent Republican governor in the primary… an actual opponent and went on to beat a previous Democrat governor… an actual opponent where she made actual executive decisions and enjoys an 80%+ approval rating
- And…. In 67 days or so, first female Vice President of the United States

Oh, did I leave out beauty queen… yep… still is. As a matter of fact, she is the very first attractive, clean, articulate white woman to run as a Republican for Vice President….
