Desperation from Democrats

Now that almost a full day has passed since John McCain has named Sarah Palin as his running mate, we can already see the themes his political opponents will take in criticizing her.  Irony runs through a number of these arguments, as most of them apply more to their own ticket than to the Republicans, and one in particular is just so despicable as to drop the jaw to the ground.  Let’s take a tour of these, shall we?

It’s a desperation pick — he didn’t make up his mind until Thursday!

McCain did make his selection on Thursday, but apparently well before the Barack Obama speech that supposedly spooked him into foregoing Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty.  What of it?  When did Barack Obama make up his mind about Joe Biden?  Biden had told reporters, “I’m not the guy” just days before finally getting picked as the running mate.  Obama was desperate for anyone with foreign-policy gravitas after stumbling through the Caucasus crisis on his own.  Paul Begala noted that it appeared Vladimir Putin had picked Obama’s running mate.

Besides, why would McCain be “desperate”?  Most Republicans run well behind their Democratic opponents in the summer; McCain gained enormous ground on Obama and was ahead in polls of likely voters before the convention.

Why would he put a small-town mayor a heartbeat away from the presidency?

This is a real laugher.  By the same logic, why would the Democrats make a state legislator the actual president?  The answer is that Obama is a US Senator of three years experience, and Palin is a governor of 20 months’ experience.  Only Barack Obama has spent two of those three years not in the Senate doing his job but running for President.  Before starting his bid, he had a grand total of less than 150 days in session in the Senate.  Palin, on the other hand, has run her state for more than triple that time.

And let’s remember that Obama is running for the top job, while Palin’s running for VP.

McCain can’t talk about experience any more — he’s shot himself in the foot!

Unfortunately for the critics, this argument doesn’t hold water, either.  All four principals are running for the highest executive position in the federal government — indeed, the position in charge of the entire executive branch.  How much executive experience does Obama have?  None; he’s worked in corporate law, community organizing, and has eleven years as a legislator at various levels.  Biden?  He’s been a lawyer for three years and a Senator for 35 years, and has no executive experience at any level of government.

McCain at least has executive experience as a squadron commander in the US Navy, but Palin has the actual executive track record that the others lack.  She has governed Alaska for 20 months, negotiated a pipeline deal with Canada (which gives her more formal diplomatic experience than either Obama or Biden), was commander-in-chief of Alaska’s National Guard, and so on.  Even her more local-level experience is more applicable than Obama’s: she served two terms as mayor, an executive position, cutting taxes and running a small city.  Obama served in the state legislature, with no executive responsibilities at all.

Troopergate!

This, at least, qualifies as a legitimate concern, at least legitimate enough that the state legislature has decided to investigate it.  Supposedly Palin fired the commissioner of public safety because he wouldn’t fire her brother-in-law, a state trooper who had becomed estranged from Palin’s sister.  Mike Wooten only got a suspension, and last month, she allegedly dismissed Walt Monegan over his handling of the case. Palin says that wasn’t the reason, the legislature noted that Monegan’s was a political appointment and he served at the pleasure of the governor, and they have also stated on the record that Palin has been so cooperative that they will not need to issue subpoenas — which hardly sounds like a cover-up.

So what did Wooten do, anyway?

Troopers eventually investigated 13 issues and found four in which Wooten violated policy or broke the law or both:

• Wooten used a Taser on his stepson.
• He illegally shot a moose.
• He drank beer in his patrol car on one occasion.
• He told others his father-in-law would “eat a f’ing lead bullet” if he helped his daughter get an attorney for the divorce.

Excuse me, but any of these four should have been a firing offense, let alone having done all four.  He Tased his stepson?  He threatened to shoot Palin’s father?  No wonder the Palins hired their own investigator and pressed the issue so hard.  But if this was the reason Palin cashiered Monegan, why did she bother to wait eighteen months after taking office to get rid of him?

Palin’s pick insults more qualified Republican women like Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Elizabeth Dole, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, etc etc etc.

I doubt any of these women feel “insulted” by McCain’s choice, but even if they did, so what?  McCain didn’t want a Washington insider as a running mate.  None of the known short-listers came from DC with the exception of Joe Lieberman, and Lieberman would have been a special case anyway.  He wanted a partner for real reform, someone with a track record of taking risks to pursue change and to clean up politics.  All of these women are insiders, and most of them have no executive experience at all — and all of them are Senators.    Why copy the Biden pick?

Sarah Palin wasn’t REALLY pregnant — it’s her daughter’s child.

This popped up on a Daily Kos diary and has unfortunately been repeated by bloggers who should know better.  The rumor is a weird reversal of the John Edwards story, only this time, critics refute Palin’s maternity.  Supposedly, so the story goes, the baby really was their eldest daughter’s (currently in high school), and not hers.  The proof?  At six months, Palin didn’t “look pregnant”, and supposedly her daughter had mono and took some time off from school.  That’s it.

This is, simply, despicable.  Babies born to teen mothers rarely have Down’s Syndrome anyway, whereas the possibility for that with a mother in her 40s is about 1 in 20.  Athletic women sometimes do not show until late in the pregnancy.  The whole rumor rests on the notion that the state’s most visible woman could carry out a fake pregnancy in front of the press while simultaneously hiding her daughter, and then pull a switcheroo — and for what possible purpose?  To cover up a teen pregnancy, in this day and age?  Give me a break.

The picture below was published at the end of February, and she certainly appears to be significantly wider than we saw yesterday on the dais.

If this is what the opposition comes down to, McCain made the wisest possible choice, and in the process exposed the opposition in a way that could never have been possible with any other running mate.

You’ve got to admire the lefties. They have created the biggest double standard in history.

What’s more, something far more significant has happened. A double standard on it’s own would wouldn’t be a deal killer. A misogynous double standard that also trashes small town America, special needs children and an astounding record of accomplishment should be. All of this coming from a party that banned voting rights of it’s delegates in favor of a dog-and- pony-show coronation 3 days ago after a 17 month campaign that never really won and engaged in similar behavior against another woman; you’ve got the makings of a revolution.

So much for Obama’s “post partisan, high road politics”, “understanding” of small town America, “family values” and value of blue collar success stories. The Democrats thrown every argument for Obama made this past week under the same bus that ran over his pastor, grandmother, friends and associates and even yesterday, his own campaign.

Even more shocking; they have driven me, a white male who has despise Hillary Clinton more than Satan even before 1992, to actually sympathize with and support PUMA.

Over at LGF:

In the Linux console, if you enter the following commands, you can learn the secrets of a political dirty trick. First, look up the host of ‘sarahpalingayrights.com’ to get the site’s IP address.

host sarahpalingayrights.com
sarahpalingayrights.com has address 74.208.74.232

Then use the same command to look up the domain name pointer of that IP address.

host 74.208.74.232
232.74.208.74.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer obamadefense.com

Well, well. “Obamadefense.com,” eh?

And what happens if you enter obamadefense.com on your browser’s address line?

Why, you’re redirected to none other than FightTheSmears.com, the official Barack Obama site that’s supposed to be defending him against smears.

Looks like they may have a second purpose: to generate a few smears of their own.

So who are the desperate ones again?

That pix of Governor Sarah Palin was interesting, as it shows her presenting information about Alaska’s gas pipeline last February to the Hoover Institution Board, which is the Stanford University-based public policy research center in Washington, D.C.

You know, small town hicks aren’t supposed to be capable of that sort of stuff. Did she find her way to Washington with her huskies? {sarcasm off}

Notice how over time every time anyone has tried to criticize Obama, the media, or his camp cried “racism”, and how the “inexperience” mantra doasn’t provide “misogyny” from the McCain/Palin camp.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is the difference.

After spending a relaxing morning trolling the deepest dankest of internet underbellies, (DU)….I’m convinced the left is really threatened by Palin. The negative response is just unbelievable. For a relative nobody, she’s already the physical manifestation of Satan on earth, (with breasts….though the DU’ers like to use coarser language).

The fake-out pregnant to cover for the pregnant daughter bit is just top notch though. I really need to go all fifth column, and keep this one going. It’s very entertaining, and they’ve abandoned all sense of logical thought in furthering this.

DngrMse on August 30, 2008 at 12:56 PM

I spent an hour or so reading DU last night. All they were talking about was Palin. There was hardly anything on Obama’s speech or the convention…it was All Palin, All The Time. And, as anyone who has been there would expect, it was nearly all gutter talk.

They’re clearly scared to death of her.

capitalist piglet on August 30, 2008 at 3:32 PM

What some do not seem to understand is that what most swing voters judge a Presidential or Vice Presidential candidate by, when it comes to their experience, is by what they have seen. Say that Obama had been governor of Illinois, or Alaska, for a year and a half, or for four years. What difference, on a “gut level”, would that make to most swing voters? Answer, not much, as most people would not have even seen much, if any, of that anyway. What most swing voters have seen is Obama getting experience as a Presidential contender for almost a year. Ditto McCain, and McCain before that. Ditto with Biden as far as how long he has “been around”. What have most swing voters seen of Palin? Nothing till just now. She is as a newborn babe (no pun indented) to them.

McCain has thrown a real “Hail Mary” pass here and strangely at a time when he had basically closed with Obama in the polls and so therefor didn’t seem to need one.

Which is why it’s a brilliant move. No one was expecting it, the defensive backs were expecting run and missed the wide-out streaking alone down the sideline.

We’re now witnessing the finger pointing in the defensive huddle.

Incomplete pass or TD, the arguing “over there” is worth the attempt.

Paul Begala noted that it appeared Vladimir Putin had picked Obama’s running mate.

Energy prices could have picked McCain ticket then.. Since she knows a lot about oil drilling and the energy issue.

Why does it have to be because she is a woman?

Interesting take from the Puma’s:

Both McCain and Palin can proudly point to a lot of friends and associates in their past history Unlike Obama here are no gaps to hide or run away from. What was most notable at the Democratic Convention was the lack of anyone who could stand up for Obama. No one from his days in Hawaii, no one from his days in college or law school, no one from his days as a community worker or at his church of twenty years. No one from his days as a politician in Chicago. The only people we saw were a lot of celebrities like Oprah. Below is an article from the the real barack obama that further discusses Obama’s curious lack of friends that were there to stand up for him at the Dem convention.

And from Charles Krauthammer:

The Perfect Stranger

Eerily missing at the Democratic convention this year were people of stature who were seriously involved at some point in Obama’s life standing up to say: I know Barack Obama. I’ve been with Barack Obama. We’ve toiled/endured together. You can trust him. I do.

Since you are telling us not to be feel comfortable voting for a ticket with an “inexperienced” Vice Presidential candidate, it is, however, that very same reason why no one in their right mind could or should ever consider voting for the ticket with an inexperienced PRESIDENTIAL candidate!

But DO KEEP UP this approach, PLEASE!!!

It only serves to highlight the mindlessness of Obama supporters LIKE YOU.

Palin is a fine pick for VP. She has management experience that “all” the other candidates lack (eat your heart out BO) and she brings a lot to the ticket. She also seems like a fast study. By the time that McCain is elected she will likely be up to speed to take over the presidency.

J_Gocht on August 30, 2008 at 4:19 PM

Palin is out of left field, but still within the ballpark. Her name’s been bruited around for at least a year as a “what if” option.

What does she mean to the GOP? Hope and change.

First off, let me say I’m not a ’social conservative’, I’m pro-choice in that while abortion may be an evil it’s a lesser one than extending Federal authority to prevent it. I support gay rights; I’m a bit ambivalent about gay marriage but I don’t consider it a sign of the apocalypse or anything like that. And I will support socially conservative candidates only to the extent that they, like St Ronald, recognize that whatever their personal views they are the custodians of a secular government. I would have bit off my finger before pushing the button for a Huckabee.

Ms Palin’s record in Alaska is what I’d term pragmatic and principled libertarian. Very Reaganesque. Her elevation to the national dialogue is a gift, one that could not have been imagined mere months ago as both parties have rushed with all their tentacles to embrace big-government policies. And her record is also impeccable on some of the key issues – notably energy and environmentalism-vs-land-use – that we face today.

There’s also the ‘reality factor’ – out of the four of them she’s the only one I’d bet money on having had a 9/16in box wrench in her hands in the past five years.

So…play the game to win, because I’m betting McCain won’t run for a second term and the VP slot would at least make her presumptive nominee for 2012.

Please, dear God, let the Left spend the next few months raising the topic of Palin’s “inexperience,” snarking about her looks, tossing out condescending Brtiney Spears slapdowns, floating insane conspiracy theories about her pregnancy, and muttering darkly about pipeline deals and state trooper firings that nobody gives a rat’s arse about. McCain /Palin will carry 48 states, and maybe we can finally replace the corrupt and deranged Democrat Party with a *real* opposition party.

The funniest thing about the “McCain picked her out of desperation” line of attack is that Obama was the ultimate desperation pick, chosen by a nervous party hungry for victory, after they were spooked by years of contemplating Hillary’s fearsome negative poll numbers. The primary voters heard all those conservatives salivating at the opportunity to rip into Hillary, and stampeded to an unknown they figured they could sell because of his rich speaking voice and skin color. Sometime around the Wright debacle, they began to realize they knew nothing about their desperation pick, and were unprepared for the fearsome train of shadowy baggage he carried. They started feeling better when they figured Obama had weathered the Wright scandal, but it was Ayers they really should have been frightened of. The weak convention bounce for Obama suggests the electorate has not become comfortable with him, the way Clinton’s huge bounce in 1992 indicated a certain level of acceptance. Whatever else Palin may accomplish, she’s already buried the Mount Olympus speech that was probably Obama’s last chance to connect with middle Americans, and reverse the increasingly creepy narrative of his campaign.

McCain might have picked Palin because of pressure from his base… but I believe we’re the same people who pressured the Democrats into choosing Obama as their candidate. We hammered them, and in their desperation, they turned to a man they did not fully understand.

No worries, mate. Even the cleverest, wileyest, trickyest dufus is still a dufus.

When your debate opponent responds with off topic statements and non-sensical attacks, it means they have run out of arguments, and now will try to engage in childish antics, much akin to “I know you are but what am I” in an attempt to get the rest of the group to giggle. I wasn’t picking on you in particular, J.G., but thanks for the horrifying image of Dan Quayle with a ponytail. It would be like the unholy love child of Pat Sajak and Steven Seagal. I’ve heard that Dan Quayle’s acoustic cover of “Oops, I Did It Again” can make crowds of screaming nuns tear off their habits. It’s probably better for everyone if we just leave him in retirement.

Doctor Zero on August 30, 2008 at 5:37 PM

When your debate opponent responds with off topic statements and non-sensical attacks,

Off topic and nonsensical only to those with dull perceptions.

it means they have run out of arguments, and now will try to engage in childish antics, much akin to “I know you are but what am I” in an attempt to get the rest of the group to giggle. The slightest “giggle” will be confirmation (in your opponents mind) of having won the argument.

You look for 5 year old children quite often.

My son will be 5 soon. I’ll tell him to look out for you.

Palin’s pick insults more qualified Republican women like Olympia Snowe = RINO – Big Time
Susan Collins = dumber than a box of rocks 90% of the time and RINO
Elizabeth Dole = really, do I have to say anything?
Kay Bailey Hutchinson = B/C the Repubs will already win TX?
etc etc etc. = whiners

All emphasis are mine and my arrogant (kewl) opinions.

I love watching the kooks squirm. They’re scared to death. They can’t help themselves. The more they insult Palin, the more votes they bring in for her.

We try to stay on topic, and generaly try to keep personal stuff out…

Please don’t ruin this site, as so many others have already been ruined.

Since that time various posters have been agreeing and some have implied a certain level of disagreement with the writer.

As for me I have attempted to define certain merits…

[eg] “She’s a cuter Dan Quayle with a ponytail.”

I have also included what might be construed by some as demerits…

[eg] “Is this just a rumor…?

Such is life.

J_Gocht on August 30, 2008 at 6:29 PM

Whatever happened to running on the issues? If they did, Obama’s inexperience and Sarah Palin’s inexperience wouldn’t matter.
Honestly, if Obama wins, I don’t even care. It’s not going to be a smooth ride for him anyway. It never is for any president. It will make it all the more enticing for Governor Palin to run in 2012 or 2016. In my opinion, she has the charisma to run. It was interesting listening to her speak.
That being said, I think that she doesn’t have enough experience, but I’m voting for McCain regardless. I don’t share Obama’s politics, so I was voting for McCain regardless. One of Obama’s problems seems to be his hypocrisy (pretending to be the candidate who will bring America together, while practicing the same gutter politics that the other side plays, in addition to being another typical Democrat). Don’t get me wrong; he seems to be a nice person, but he is the typical Democrat. I got a call right before March 4th from the Food Worker’s Union asking me who I was voting for in the primaries. I said I was undecide, but the woman went on about how Obama had been endorsed by the union. He has big unions in his pocket. That’s just a fact of life for their party, for both parties. They get endorsements from groups, and expect their members to follow along.
I can understand both sides in this argument about inexperience, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter.
Even if Obama wins, he may not have much luck passing a universal health care bill with so many Blue Dog Democrats in the mix.

R13, if I recall correctly, you are a decent sort. So I won’t get too bent out of shape about your post.

I could say something like:

Sorry Romeo13, I didn’t know that HA appointed you to Post Guardian.

or

When you say “we” do you mean the Royal “We”?

or

Lighten up Francis Romeo13

or

I could point out that MB4 is a “big boy” and can defend himself if he so chooses.

or

I could point out that lacking a sense of humor IS a mark of the KOS types.

or

I could ask if you have ever gone after MB4 for repeatedly using that “I need to go find a 5 year old” line, which is actually just a thinly veiled way of calling someone stupid. Unless you think insults are ok, as long as they are done artfully?

But, like I said, you seem like a decent sort, so I won’t even go there.

And besides, I’m just too happy about the Palin pick to get down and dirty today.

TheCulturalist on August 30, 2008 at 6:56 PM

Thanks, J. Gocht. I just hope that people remember that the first thing we need to practice is respect for the office of the president. Maybe I just have a thin skin and need to “grow a set,” or maybe it’s my youthful naivete, but I say “may the best team win.” John McCain’s just happens to be my candidate. Who knows. Maybe after November 4th we can all stop the verbal bomb-throwing (the opinion pundits aside, of course, Olberman in particular).

For those unsure of when McCain’s hard money contributions end:

Folks, the message I got after I donated to McCain/Palin yesterday includes this:

You may already know that I have decided to accept federal matching funds for the final months of this campaign- keeping a campaign promise I made. But that means that August 31st marks the last day I can accept your primary contribution.

You can send to the RNC after Septmber 1st, but to give hard money to McCain you gotta do it by Sunday August 31st!

Maybe there’s some loophole somewhere, I can’t say, but I wouldn’t risk waiting to see.

Maquis on August 30, 2008 at 8:04 PM

Before starting his bid, he had a grand total of less than 150 days in session in the Senate.

Hey, Ed… are these real calendar days or days using the Dumbocratic method of telling time – only work done on the clock, and more specifically, on a particular issue?

I dated a girl whom I did not know was preggers until six weeks before birth. So, chalk that conspriacy up to just that… a conspiracy, nothing more.

madmonkphotog on August 30, 2008 at 8:04 PM

Heaven forbid something happened to McCain, then Palin would do what any Vice President would do in that situation.

Pick a veep to play off her strengths and help her weaknesses.

Palin/Petraeus

And that ticket would still have more experience than Obama/Biden.

Enoxo on August 30, 2008 at 8:15 PM

The Lefties need to understand this: When they attack Sarah Palin, they are attacking Libertarians nationwide, and the entire Libertarian movement. Along with Govs Butch Otter of ID, and Mark Sanford of SC, SARAH PALIN IS THE MOST LIBERTARIAN GOVERNOR IN THE UNITED STATES! That’s why the Libertarian Party of Alaska endorsed her in 2006 for Gov. That’s why the Chairman of the LPA today posted a Blog Entry Congratulating her on being selected as McCain’s VP.

The Left jumped through hoops in 2006 to win Libertarian support in order to win back the House and Senate. Some Libertarians fell for it, and went Democrat.

Now, we’re starting to see their true colors. They are now blatantly and viciously attacking our Lady of Liberty Sarah Palin.
