Desperation from Democrats

Now that almost a full day has passed since John McCain has named Sarah Palin as his running mate, we can already see the themes his political opponents will take in criticizing her.  Irony runs through a number of these arguments, as most of them apply more to their own ticket than to the Republicans, and one in particular is just so despicable as to drop the jaw to the ground.  Let’s take a tour of these, shall we?

It’s a desperation pick — he didn’t make up his mind until Thursday!

McCain did make his selection on Thursday, but apparently well before the Barack Obama speech that supposedly spooked him into foregoing Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty.  What of it?  When did Barack Obama make up his mind about Joe Biden?  Biden had told reporters, “I’m not the guy” just days before finally getting picked as the running mate.  Obama was desperate for anyone with foreign-policy gravitas after stumbling through the Caucasus crisis on his own.  Paul Begala noted that it appeared Vladimir Putin had picked Obama’s running mate.

Besides, why would McCain be “desperate”?  Most Republicans run well behind their Democratic opponents in the summer; McCain gained enormous ground on Obama and was ahead in polls of likely voters before the convention.

Why would he put a small-town mayor a heartbeat away from the presidency?

This is a real laugher.  By the same logic, why would the Democrats make a state legislator the actual president?  The answer is that Obama is a US Senator of three years experience, and Palin is a governor of 20 months’ experience.  Only Barack Obama has spent two of those three years not in the Senate doing his job but running for President.  Before starting his bid, he had a grand total of less than 150 days in session in the Senate.  Palin, on the other hand, has run her state for more than triple that time.

And let’s remember that Obama is running for the top job, while Palin’s running for VP.

McCain can’t talk about experience any more — he’s shot himself in the foot!

Unfortunately for the critics, this argument doesn’t hold water, either.  All four principals are running for the highest executive position in the federal government — indeed, the position in charge of the entire executive branch.  How much executive experience does Obama have?  None; he’s worked in corporate law, community organizing, and has eleven years as a legislator at various levels.  Biden?  He’s been a lawyer for three years and a Senator for 35 years, and has no executive experience at any level of government.

McCain at least has executive experience as a squadron commander in the US Navy, but Palin has the actual executive track record that the others lack.  She has governed Alaska for 20 months, negotiated a pipeline deal with Canada (which gives her more formal diplomatic experience than either Obama or Biden), was commander-in-chief of Alaska’s National Guard, and so on.  Even her more local-level experience is more applicable than Obama’s: she served two terms as mayor, an executive position, cutting taxes and running a small city.  Obama served in the state legislature, with no executive responsibilities at all.

Troopergate!

This, at least, qualifies as a legitimate concern, at least legitimate enough that the state legislature has decided to investigate it.  Supposedly Palin fired the commissioner of public safety because he wouldn’t fire her brother-in-law, a state trooper who had becomed estranged from Palin’s sister.  Mike Wooten only got a suspension, and last month, she allegedly dismissed Walt Monegan over his handling of the case. Palin says that wasn’t the reason, the legislature noted that Monegan’s was a political appointment and he served at the pleasure of the governor, and they have also stated on the record that Palin has been so cooperative that they will not need to issue subpoenas — which hardly sounds like a cover-up.

So what did Wooten do, anyway?

Troopers eventually investigated 13 issues and found four in which Wooten violated policy or broke the law or both:

• Wooten used a Taser on his stepson.
• He illegally shot a moose.
• He drank beer in his patrol car on one occasion.
• He told others his father-in-law would “eat a f’ing lead bullet” if he helped his daughter get an attorney for the divorce.

Excuse me, but any of these four should have been a firing offense, let alone having done all four.  He Tased his stepson?  He threatened to shoot Palin’s father?  No wonder the Palins hired their own investigator and pressed the issue so hard.  But if this was the reason Palin cashiered Monegan, why did she bother to wait eighteen months after taking office to get rid of him?

Palin’s pick insults more qualified Republican women like Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Elizabeth Dole, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, etc etc etc.

I doubt any of these women feel “insulted” by McCain’s choice, but even if they did, so what?  McCain didn’t want a Washington insider as a running mate.  None of the known short-listers came from DC with the exception of Joe Lieberman, and Lieberman would have been a special case anyway.  He wanted a partner for real reform, someone with a track record of taking risks to pursue change and to clean up politics.  All of these women are insiders, and most of them have no executive experience at all — and all of them are Senators.    Why copy the Biden pick?

Sarah Palin wasn’t REALLY pregnant — it’s her daughter’s child.

This popped up on a Daily Kos diary and has unfortunately been repeated by bloggers who should know better.  The rumor is a weird reversal of the John Edwards story, only this time, critics refute Palin’s maternity.  Supposedly, so the story goes, the baby really was their eldest daughter’s (currently in high school), and not hers.  The proof?  At six months, Palin didn’t “look pregnant”, and supposedly her daughter had mono and took some time off from school.  That’s it.

This is, simply, despicable.  Babies born to teen mothers rarely have Down’s Syndrome anyway, whereas the possibility for that with a mother in her 40s is about 1 in 20.  Athletic women sometimes do not show until late in the pregnancy.  The whole rumor rests on the notion that the state’s most visible woman could carry out a fake pregnancy in front of the press while simultaneously hiding her daughter, and then pull a switcheroo — and for what possible purpose?  To cover up a teen pregnancy, in this day and age?  Give me a break.

The picture below was published at the end of February, and she certainly appears to be significantly wider than we saw yesterday on the dais.

If this is what the opposition comes down to, McCain made the wisest possible choice, and in the process exposed the opposition in a way that could never have been possible with any other running mate.

Desperation is right. I hope they keep it up. It hangs in the air like a foul stench that everyone will recognize and will be repulsed by.

The left has nothing to grasp at, therefore they need to make up the most menial of crap to propogate. This is a good sign, a sign that we will destroy them in November.

You can tell McCain really nailed this pick by the utter panic from the lib kooks and the MSM. Oh, wait. That’s redundant. Hell, I actually gave the Maverick campaign money for the first time yesterday.

I love Swiss cheese… especially when the opposition’s entire attack looks just like it. In the absence of any surprises, this is one independent now looking forward to pulling the lever for the Republican ticket in November.

And all of this hoopla and the Dems going nuts is solid proof that Sarah Palin was the best choice.

I saw Bob Beckels on one of the Fox shows right after the announcement and he looked and acted like a petulant child. Must mean she’s a good pick.

Complete and utter patent desperation. Any Kos members reading this? DESPERATION. You look nuts. You look ridiculous. You look like you don’t have two brain cells to rub together. You look ignorant. Moronic. Two sandwiches short of a picnic. You look absolutely pathetically desperate. Ad infinitum.

If they had any idea as to how insane they look, perhaps they’d reconsider their behavior?

It’s going to get worse…much, much worse.

They can’t abide having women escape from the Liberal kitchen.

Asher on August 30, 2008 at 10:11 AM

The fake pregnancy thing is stupid just like claims about Obama being a Muslim is stupid

Both parties say stupid sh*t and distort things - so please stop acting like it’s only the Democrats who do it.

Dave Rywall on August 30, 2008 at 10:11 AM

Flopping Aces has a fantastic breakdown on the Wootton case (PLEASE, Ed, stop calling it “Troopergate”! There isn’t any “gate” here). Everyone should link this page on any blog or news site where this issue is being discussed.

Sorry, Dems, no “there” there

I also strongly believe that blogs like this should not even mention the pregnancy story. This is a BLATANT attempt by the Left to just make s**t up and scare evangelical voters. We should not be giving it currency even to refute it. There are trolls all over the conservative blogs trying to get people to read that post at Daily Kos. We should not be helping them out.

rockmom on August 30, 2008 at 10:12 AM

Desperate Kossacks - those idiots pulled that mother/daughter pregnancy switcheroo plot from Desperate Housewives. Maybe next they’ll claim that her oldest son is a gay stoner who ran over their hispanic neighbor’s mother.

BuzzCrutcher on August 30, 2008 at 10:12 AM

I’m amazed that the lefties have come up with the baby-was-daughter’s-nonsense (did she have a home birth or bribe a whole obstetrics staff in a hospital?).

As far as baby coverups go, wasn’t the MSM, plus some of the Dems, covering for John Edwards for months, and believing his “I had an affair only when my wife was in remission and the baby’s not mine” line? If Edwards really was Obama’s first pick, they apparently thought they could get away with it.

Wethal on August 30, 2008 at 10:13 AM

I think the more she is out there and gets more national exposure, people will realize she is more than just a pretty face. I am so looking forward to her debating Biden-the contrast between the old Washington “insider” and this new and up-coming conservative will be stark…and welcomed by the American people…

Static21 on August 30, 2008 at 10:14 AM

I thought democrats were the women’s party? These attacks against her are disgusting. I have been reading all the analysis of this pick and I think one important fact is being underestimated. All the candidates are trying to connect with “average” Americans, not one of them can from my perspective as they are all politicians and have been for almost their entire careers. Not judging that just stating how I feel when I think of them. I connect with her because her background is so like mine. She has a life outside of politics and uses that as a point of reference, i like that.

Dave Rywall on August 30, 2008 at 10:11 AM

Agreed. Both sides say stupid things, but the example you use about the Obama Muslim story was started by the Left, I think. Not a great example there.

p40tiger on August 30, 2008 at 10:14 AM

Also expect this: From now until Nov. she will be asked every single “gotcha” foreign policy question there is. “Mrs Palin, who is leader of Namibia?” Mrs. Palin, how much does a gallon of milk cost in the UAE?” They will stay away from her strengths (energy, reformation, ethics, social issues, etc.) and as a result we should probably be prepared for her to make several mistakes.

Weight of Glory on August 30, 2008 at 10:14 AM

Well, Obama cribbed half his acceptance speech from “The American President,” so why should this surprise you? These guys can’t even come up with original smears!

rockmom on August 30, 2008 at 10:14 AM

One small correction, Ed:

The answer is that Obama is a US Senator of three years less than one year, plus two years spent running for president experience, and Palin is a governor of 20 months’ experience.

The more the lefties spew venom at Palin, the better I like her.

Let’s pretend for a moment that Osama Obama didn’t have his color and Messiah-ness to hide behind: would not many of his actions spur investigations that would put the one aimed at Palin to shame?

BobH on August 30, 2008 at 10:16 AM

Let the Dems and moonbats put their lunacy on full display.

Palin represents millions of Americans who work hard, play by the rules, rise legitimately through the ranks, love their families and their country. She represents people who have been largely ignored for a very long time, and they’re fed up with being overlooked.

The more viscous the Dems are the more people will rally behind her.

I love the smell of victory in the morning. :)

Cody1991 on August 30, 2008 at 10:16 AM

Sarah “Barracude” Palin…..tough enough to deliver a baby and deliver state business within a few hours….

Sarah Palin delivering our future.

sven10077 on August 30, 2008 at 10:17 AM

While leftists may swoon over Ferraro/1984 and Hillary/2008 because they’re women, they are upset about Palin/2008 for the same reason. I find the recent Obama campaign attacks on McCain/Palin (e.g. house-gate, or Palin said she doesn’t know what the VP does) very very lame. They’ve developed a “rapid response team” like Clinton had in 1992, which Kerry didn’t have in 2004. They’re in fight mode all the time and they just look stupid. Their criticisms so far of Palin are silly. Mayor of small town (she’s the Gov of AK), no experience (as much as Obama, about the same age as Obama), beauty queen (she was a teenager then), doesn’t understand foreign policy (as much experience as Obama, and commanded AK natl guard). If Obama ever makes a substantive criticism of McCain/Palin I’ll fall out of my chair.

Paul-Cincy on August 30, 2008 at 10:17 AM

They’re demonstrating this level of depravity within 24 hours of the announcement.

Imagine the contemptible depths they will hit before November.

Rush is absolutely right when he mentions that most Liberals lead very unhappy lives.

When a party and their MSM mouthpieces continually display their lack of class, they deserve to be unhappy.

The ex-brother-in-law, Trooper Wooten, supposedly claimed he tested the taser on the boy at the boy’s request. Okay, let’s say that’s true. Some possible comebacks…

“Mrs Palin, who is leader of Namibia?”

I don’t know, but I do know they’ve never seriously threatened anyone the way Russia has.

Mrs. Palin, how much does a gallon of milk cost in the UAE?”

Considerably less than it does here since their government can afford to subsidize their citizens’ lives because they drill as much of their own domestic oil supplies as they can.

Kafir on August 30, 2008 at 10:34 AM

Check out the Aces link in Headlines at the top of the HA home page. This little nugget perfectly illustrates the mindset of the Obamabot base with regard to her decision to keep Trig rather than have him vacuumed out of her womb:

Sarah Palin’s judgment is despicalble. She knowingly whelped a Mongoloid child earlier this year, probably to pander to the Right to Life Nutbags. Irresponsible decisions like hers dilutes the viability of the American Gene Pool. No wonder why we are falling farther and farther behind in an increasingly competitive global economic environment. Her OB should have cut her tubes after her first child!!! Posted by: paul Curooke

Desperation…

Yep, it started to set in on Obama and his minions about (3) weeks ago. Following the Obama Europe tour, where Obama told the world he was sorry for all of the past American mistakes made in Europe causing pain to innocent Euro’s. Obama then witnessed his approval numbers going down rather than sky rocketing as he expected. Obama telling Euro’s that he is a child of the world rather than a proud citizen of America, this was a very revealing statement as to the mind set of this man, thus adding to the damages caused by such an ego maniac.

Obama’s reaction to the Russian invasion of Georgia, was to blame America once again. Liberals love to blame America for all things bad in the world today, as has been the case for my entire lifetime. Obama has revealed his ultra Liberal ideology to Americans, which will ultimately be his undoing. Liberalism must be hidden by all means necessary if Liberals are to win general elections. The media has been exposed as pure raw 100% Liberals, as witnessed once again at the Obama speech when a boat load of press members were caught on film jumping up and down cheering for Obama; net result of this very revealing dynamic is American citizens turning away from the Liberal media by the millions. Hollywood has been exposed in the same way, just look at the numbers on Clooney as an example of the damage his Liberal exposure has had on his career. Before Clooney was exposed for his radical leftist views, his movies were block busters; after the exposure, his movies have been one flop after another. Same applies to Sean Penn and many others.

Obama has exposed his radical Liberal views, by way of his Reverend, and virtually everybody the man decided to surround himself with. Americans will not elect a radical leftist in a national election. Keith Olbermann is done folks, cooked and left out in the yard to rot. The man will have taken an entire network down with him before the stench becomes so bad that GE must burn the network in order to save some piece of their reputation. Nancy Pelosi has led this Congress to the lowest public approval ratings in the history of our government. Why is this? Her ultra Liberal views came dripping out of her mouth within days of taking over power. Liberalism must be masked, hidden, camouflaged. Why is Rush Limbaugh so hated by Liberals around the world? He has led the way with exposing Liberalism at it’s roots; he has paved the way for all whom have followed.

Americans don’t elect ultra Liberals in national elections! Reality is setting in on Obama and his goons.

Desperation breeds desperation, just like success breeds success. The more the Dems scream and throw slime, the more the American people will like her and rout for her. Americans always love an underdog and she can’t be more of an underdog. Besides, she’s got the hockey mom vote.

flytier on August 30, 2008 at 10:55 AM

I have this mental image: Palin firing a military rifle vs. pencil-neck riding his bike with a flat tire.

Don’t know why, but to me it makes clear the choice of who I’d rather have on the team against Putin, DinnerJacket, Chavez, etc.

mr.blacksheep on August 30, 2008 at 10:57 AM

John McCain made a shrewd choice. A wise one? We will find out on November 4, but for the time being Obama is struggling to find his footing as his name has become nothing more than a footnote these last few hours.

You know, they throw that word mongoloid around and they kiss this election goodbye. As usual, the Democrats’ biggest liability will be their base.

Exposed they be. Hopefully to more than you and me.

Are we sure that absurd post at Daily Kos wasn’t actually written by MSNBC’s chief Kos Kid, Keith Olberdunce?

JammieWearingFool on August 30, 2008 at 11:01 AM

I started out anti-McCain. Began to think better of him when I saw his hilarious ads mocking The One. Love the man now that he’s picked Sarah, Change We Really Can Believe In.

Zachary Taylor=Old Rough and Ready
John McCain=Old, Rough, and Ready!

BitterClinger on August 30, 2008 at 11:07 AM

What’s even more despicable is that the Kos link shows a poll, where 54% of people DON’T think this is a private matter and should be left alone.

I’m just not sure how anyone in their right mind can read the trash that comes from the Kos.

iamse7en on August 30, 2008 at 11:08 AM

Did you guys catch Obama’s walkback yesterday? “Uh…. sometimes campaigns have a… um… hair trigger… uhhhh…” Great stuff.

Jim Treacher on August 30, 2008 at 11:08 AM

“Obama served in the state legislature, with no executive responsibilities at all.”

That’s being kind to Obama, given the number of times he voted “present”. That vote avoids any responsibility. You’d think the people who voted for him were asking him to make decisions on their behalf, not avoid them.

Is Barry planning on voting “present” if he’s elected president?

GarandFan on August 30, 2008 at 11:08 AM

The only one I’m really worried about is the investigation with the safety commissioner, because it’s being spearheaded by a democrat.

Enoxo on August 30, 2008 at 11:11 AM

Tee hee. Giggling madly because this is all the democrats can come up with. I genuinely hope she is as strong as she appears to be; Biden will have reason to fear “Sarah Barracuda”.
Heh. Getting more popcorn now.. :)

Fuquay Steve on August 30, 2008 at 11:17 AM

I don’t mean this to sound sexist, but, with Mrs. Palin seeming so, well, normal, I feel sorry for her and her family having to go through the meat grinder that the left calls politics.

My apology’s ahead of time Palin family for the harrassment the leftists are about to unleash on you and your family.

Good luck. You have all my support!

McCain/ Palin ‘08

cntrlfrk on August 30, 2008 at 11:17 AM

If McCain proclaims at the convention that he is running for one term and one term only, McCain/Palin will win 45 states in November.

At least 45.

SlimyBill on August 30, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Have we heard from Yeeaarrrggghhh yet or did he get out the ol’ prescription pad yesterday?

Captain Hate on August 30, 2008 at 11:27 AM

The McCain campaign needs to prep Mrs. Palin a little bit, and then get her out there on the national stage, as much coverage as possible. Let her define herself before others can.

She did well in her speech yesterday, no stammering or pausing ‘uh, um, uhmm’, and all without a teleprompter.

I believe the more people see and understand her, the more they’ll like her.

Enoxo on August 30, 2008 at 11:29 AM

I think that having Palin’s experience in question is the best thing that could happen. Now, not only can McCain keep the spotlight on Obama’s “experience,” but now every time Obama attacks Palin on experience, she can play the “I-know-I-am-but-what-are-you” card.

Glenn Jericho on August 30, 2008 at 11:30 AM

SlimyBill on August 30, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Bad idea Bill, as this would make McCain a “lame duck president” immediately upon taking office. It won’t happen.

Keemo on August 30, 2008 at 11:31 AM

Excellent post. I think the Left has really had it handed to them, and they’re lashing out like wounded animals at this point. The whole experience thing just absolutely slays me, and the thing about her pregnancy is just beyond the pale.

But, let em go after a likeable, smart, attractive woman and mother of 5 who has been running a state while the others have been running their mouths. They’ll be exposed for the misogynistic jerks they are, and America will get to see Palin rise above it and demonstrate the tenacity and leadership that makes her the BEST choice for McCain. I’m psyched!

changer1701 on August 30, 2008 at 11:31 AM

Was absolutely giddy yesterday. Only thing that brought me down was seeing the crap about her son being her daughters and not hers.

Utterly despicable. I believe she knew this kind of stuff could and would happen and will take it just fine, but it is so vile and so disgusting and makes me ashamed that people who traffic in such are “fellow americans.”

As a side note, you know that the pick rocks because everyone on the left is beside themselves but cannot come up with a even a decent criticism.

America1st on August 30, 2008 at 11:34 AM

IMO McCain should roll out cabinet announcements one a week as we get closer to the election. He could cement the deal and cruise to the finish line if he does.

obladioblada on August 30, 2008 at 11:36 AM

Why isn’t the left so concerned about who was offended when Biden was picked?

HIllary? Richardson?

What is absolutely amazing to me is the depth of candidates McCain had to choose from, when the “best” Obama could come up with is … Biden?

desertdweller on August 30, 2008 at 11:40 AM

The smears continue.

Last night the Los angeles affiliate of the Fox network introduced the Sara Palin nomination with “John McCain rolls the dice” in describing the methodology of his vice president selection process. Of course, this is not supported by fact. There is no indication that he used any element of chance to select Sara Palin. In his introduction speech in Dayton, Ohio he carefully stated the factors that he used. The phrase “rolls the dice” was a misstatement of the facts.

This morning Good Morning America say that Sara Palin “has a dead bear in her office”. She does have a bear skin, but a “dead bear”? They are reaching for the most unflattering way to say anything they can. I suppose that if you have a leather belt on that you actually have a dead cow around your waist.

Obama took the lofty position that families should be off limits. Fine. But where is team Obama as the Daily Kos is printing the most despicable and vile attacks on Palin not even worthy of a private discussion?

Has the Obama camp tried to stop that, as they tried to silence Kurz in his review of the Annenberg files? To the contrary, it appears that they are gleefully participating in that henious baseless smear.

NOT a good idea. Many have pointed out the “lame duck” syndrome. Mostly, though, too much can happen in four years.

desertdweller on August 30, 2008 at 11:43 AM

Downs is a genetic defect most prevalent when there are eggs from older women and sperm from older men.

Young women don’t produce Downs children, especially not teens.

Well yes, young women can. I have had two friends in their 20’s that had children with Down Syndrome.

However, for them to concoct this ridiculous story is beyond despicable. And yes, that picture above looks like a very fit, but very pregnant lady.

Noelie on August 30, 2008 at 11:45 AM

I think we should start a nation-wide effort to always use the pre-fix “desperate” when giving mention to the Democratic Party, Obama, liberals, progressives, etc..

Desperate liberals
Desperate Kos Kids
Desperate Progressives
Desperate Pro-Choice lobby
