What Palin does for McCain, and to Obama

With multiple media outlets confirming now that Governor Sarah Palin will indeed join the Republican ticket as John McCain’s running mate, McCain has clearly chosen to play offense rather than defense.  Instead of a safe choice, such as closest runner-up Mitt Romney or genial Everyman Tim Pawlenty, McCain took some risk with a relative newcomer to national politics.  Palin will inject risk, excitement, controversy, and an unexpected historic note to the Republican convention.

First, though, let’s assess the risk.  Palin has served less than two years as Governor of Alaska, which tends to eat into the experience message on which McCain has relied thus far.  At 44, she’s younger than Barack Obama by three years.  She has served as a mayor and as the Ethics Commissioner on the state board regulating oil and natural gas, for a total of eight years political experience before her election as governor.  That’s also less than Obama has, with seven years in the Illinois legislature and three in the US Senate.

However, the nature of the experience couldn’t be more different.  Palin spent her entire political career crusading against the political machine that rules Alaska — which exists in her own Republican party.  She blew the whistle on the state GOP chair, who had abused his power on the same commission to conduct party business.  Obama, in contrast, talked a great deal about reform in Chicago but never challenged the party machine, preferring to take an easy ride as a protegé of Richard Daley instead.

Palin has no formal foreign-policy experience, which puts her at a disadvantage to Joe Biden.  However, in nineteen months as governor, she certainly has had more practical experience in diplomacy than Biden or Obama have ever seen.  She runs the only American state bordered only by two foreign countries, one of which has increasingly grown hostile to the US again, Russia.

And let’s face it — Team Obama can hardly attack Palin for a lack of foreign-policy experience.  Obama has none at all, and neither Obama or Biden have any executive experience.  Palin has almost over seven years of executive experience.

Politically, this puts Obama in a very tough position.  The Democrats had prepared to launch a full assault on McCain’s running mate, but having Palin as a target creates one large headache.  If they go after her like they went after Hillary Clinton, Obama risks alienating women all over again.  If they don’t go after her like they went after Hillary, he risks alienating Hillary supporters, who will see this as a sign of disrespect for Hillary.

For McCain, this gives him a boost like no other in several different ways.  First, the media will eat this up.  That effectively buries Obama’s acceptance speech and steals the oxygen he needs for a long-term convention bump.  A Romney or Pawlenty pick would not have accomplished that.

Second, Palin will re-energize the base.  She’s not just a pro-life advocate, she’s lived the issue herself.  That will attract the elements of the GOP that had held McCain at a distance since the primaries and provide positive motivation for Republicans, rather than just rely on anti-Democrat sentiment to get them to the polls.

Third, and I think maybe most importantly, Palin addresses the energy issue better and more attuned to the American electorate than maybe any of the other three principals in this election.  Even beyond her efforts to reform the Oil and Natural Gas Commission, she has demonstrated her independence from so-called “Big Oil” while promoting domestic production.  She brings instant credibility to the ticket on energy policy, and reminds independents and centrists that the Obama-Biden ticket offers nothing but the same excuses we’ve heard for 30 years.

Finally, based on all of the above, McCain can remind voters who has the real record of reform.  Obama talks a lot about it but has no actual record of reform, and for a running mate, he chose a 35-year Washington insider with all sorts of connections to lobbyists and pork.  McCain has fought pork, taken real political risks to fight undue influence of lobbyists, and he picked an outsider who took on her own party — and won.

This is change you can believe in, and not change that amounts to all talk.  McCain changed the trajectory of the race today by stealing Obama’s strength and turning it against him.  Obama provided that opening by picking Biden as his running mate, and McCain was smart enough to take advantage of the opening.

Very good decision by Senator McCain. Two thumbs up.

I wonder if she’ll get an invite to appear on ABCs The View, and if she does get one, how will they treat her?

Weebrook:

People vote for lesser of evils all the time. The truth is there is no way that any candidate can please everyone, or even a majority on all the issues. Everytime we vote, we vote for the best person available. If we wait for our idea of perfect, we may wait forever.

Terrye on August 29, 2008 at 3:54 PM

You’re right. This site proves that even conservatives disagree on a range of issues, so no candidate is going to receive 100% support from all conservatives. There is a window of acceptability that a candidate must fall into, and if he/she doesn’t then you are indeed voting against someone, and not for someone, and I’m not going to do that anymore. The GOP has slowly been moving to the left for years, and it’s time to reverse that trend, and we do that by saying that you’re candidates fall outside of our comfort zone, and we won’t support them.

I think this is a natural process. The party that is dominant for a period of time tends to gather waste. This waste are the candidates that have no real moral connection to an ideology, and instead are associated with a party only for what the party offers them. This waste accumulates until it renders the party ineffective at pursuing it’s core objectives, and only effective at pursuing the interests of it’s clingers and hanger-ons. When this happens it’s time to clean house at any cost. I think that’s where the GOP is now.

DFCtomm on August 29, 2008 at 4:08 PM

Amen to Palin’s nice voice and positive delivery.

Every time I heard angry Hillary’s lecture the other night I couldn’t keep from thinking about Charlie Brown’s school teacher.

viking01 on August 29, 2008 at 4:09 PM

Experience? To re-state what many have already mentioned, Obama has zero experience and he’s running for the top job. The assistant coach usually has less experience than the head coach.

What experience did William Jefferson Clinton bring to the table in the way of foreign relations. The only people who knew him were those who lived in Arkansas and Southern Missouri and they referred to him as “Slick Willie”.

McCain and his campaign made a masterful stroke of politcal genius.

iamsaved on August 29, 2008 at 4:09 PM

I hate to go against the grain here, but I think this will go down as a huge gamble that panned…miserably. This is not sour grapes because “my guy” didn’t make it. Sarah Palin undercuts so many of McCain’s arguments, I don’t even know where to start. John McCain is 72 years old…he has a trophy wife…Sarah has just a little more experience than Obama. Of Hillary’s Pumas, I don’t think enough of them will cross over to make it worth his while. While they would love to vote for a woman, not many of them will vote for a pro-life Republican just because she has tatas. My vote is still definitely with McCain, but I’m trying to be clearheaded about this. While this is a novel choice today, I dread that it will have worn off come November.

What a great decision made by John McCain! Gov. Palin is an outstanding choice. Two thumbs up.

There will be a crucial moment in the VP debate where Biden will make the case the Palin isn’t ready to assume the role of President if something happens to McCain at age 73. And that given his age, McCain should have demonstrated better judgement. It will be a seminal moment for McCain’s hopes of becoming President.

Not sure I see how she brings more positives to this campaign than possible negatives. If she brought a battleground state to McCain’s camp then it would be a more clear-cut case. But she’s from Alaska…

Nor do I see Palin as appealing to the women who were going to vote for Hillary. Hillary’s women support a feminist agenda. The only thing the two have in common is gender.

That’s enough for most of them.

BTW, the posts on various pro-Hillary blogs show that they have a lot more excitement for this ticket than you apparently believe they should.

MarkTheGreat on August 29, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Still playing devil’s advocate here, but what does this say about McCain’s portrayal of the Biden pick? He said the most qualified pick was Hilary Clinton, by far. What about McCain’s economic credentials? If this pick was to anchor the base, couldn’t he have picked a more qualified conservative? There must be some internal polling or something else I’m just not seeing.

hot-heir on August 29, 2008 at 4:31 PM

There will be a crucial moment in the VP debate where Biden will make the case the Palin isn’t ready to assume the role of President if something happens to McCain at age 73.

All Palin has to do is point out that today, she is more qualified to be president than Obama is. And that Obama wants to be president now, not after several years of watching and learning.

No, I don’t really think so. She has pro-life cred that extends beyond the voting booth or the debate floor. She’s a lived-it qualified social con, no one else is Superior there.

She’s a reformer, obviously, and she stood up to the bridge to nowhere, which is a product of the only place that has higher negatives then the administration. Which of course appeals to fiscal cons. And she wants to drill, which I like. I don’t think another pick had as many positives for the base.

Obama wasn’t going to win under any circumstances because the American people aren’t stupid enough to elect someone who would attend the black equivalent of klan rallies for twenty years or who is big buds with a terrorist. It might have been close but it just wasn’t going to happen. AP thinks differently because I think he lives somewhere screwy like NY that gave up on the American dream a long time ago (either that or he spends too much time with people who do live there).

What makes the Palin pick so good is that it helps with the two groups McCain has the most potential to gain from, Hillary supporters and Conservatives. Who else could have appealed to two such wildly disparate groups? Heck, if you add in normal, blue-collar workers who should see a lot of themselves in the Palins then you have what amounts to an absolutely brilliant move.

I should also say that this bodes well for possible future appointments that McCain may make in his administration.

Time for another Palin Fact:

There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of animals Sarah Palin allows to live.

JP1986UM on August 29, 2008 at 4:45 PM

The dems can’t castigate Palin’s ‘lack of experience’ when the top of their ticket have less Executive experience than she does. Indeed, Gov Palin was in elective office FIVE years before the Obamanation first got elected in his rigged election.
Gov Palin is the perfect counterpoint to McCain as a reformer this is the only true reform ticket. It was a sexist slap by the Obamanation’s campaign to call her an ‘ex mayor’ of a small town, thereby denigrating her public service as Governor. It’s like the dems were saying Get back to the kitchen sweetie and look after your kids, and leave the serious business to us men.
I applaud her for having a child with special needs when others would have opted for the “easy way” with abortion.
Indeed, putting her up against condescending Biden, will be a treasure trove at the debate, and we should have those great Gore moments from his debate with George W. Bush repeated.
The funny thing is that the pc crowd in the liberal media will trip them up in deciding how to be the attack dogs for the DNC.
This is a pumping up experience!
They don’t know what to do with Palin sterling character. She saves state money rather than spending it and refunds excess funds to the people. Mazel Tov McCain and Happy Birthday!

Awesome 2012 ticket there, I agree. But the more I think about it, the more it seems to me that picking Palin now makes that scenario more likely, not less.

We know, or can safely surmise, that Hillary has been bending all her efforts behind the scenes towards positioning herself for a history-making run in 4 years. “First woman presidential candidate ev-ar” would have swept into office. “First woman presidential candidate to run against first woman Vice President”, not so much. So you don’t want to follow in Bill Clinton’s footsteps on that one I surmise.

MB4 on August 29, 2008 at 5:36 PM

PALIN has more MILITARY experience then Obama & Biden!!!

Y314K on August 29, 2008 at 4:04 PM
Because, as Governor for a year and a half, she was the legal head of a state national guard, as I believe all governors are?

By that line of thinking Bill Clinton had 8 years of military experience before becoming President and then 8 more years of really big military experience as President.

Whooh doggies!

MB4 on August 29, 2008 at 5:03 PM

Compare to Bush-41… Bill Clinton’s 8 years in the military did not help him… But if u compare Palin’s exec. experience & military experience to Obama… Humn…. 1 > 0… Simple math…

As u read on the top of my post… I also stated “Let’s use one of their tactics…LOL…. The chicken Little one…” U know… the tactic they use to say u can’t talk about military things if u didn’t serve… On our side of the debate that is not a disqualifier…

Y314K on August 29, 2008 at 5:37 PM

Palin has made a good number of trips to Iraq and Kuwait to visit Alaskan NG members

coldwarrior on August 29, 2008 at 5:07 PM
Trust me on this, unless things have really changed over the years, And I mean REALLY changed, they would have much preferred that a governor show real support for the troops and have sent an ontourage from Hooters.

MB4 on August 29, 2008 at 5:26 PM

Humn… How about having her son serve in Iraq.. I think they would take a foxhole buddy over an entourage from Hooters… It would be a close vote.. 49/51 but a buddy on u’r 6 is better any day…

Y314K on August 29, 2008 at 5:40 PM

It was quite implicit.

Can we print the bumper stickers now? I’ll put up with Juan for four years, but in 2012? Palin/Jindal…Republican values back on track. I will wear holes in my shoes campaigning for that ticket.

hot-heir on August 29, 2008 at 5:12 PM

That’s the spirit! One of the major problems the Republicans have had this election cycle has been a lack of young contenders. The country’s full of young Democrats/liberals/socialists, but the young Republicans/conservatives are harder to find. (Perhaps because so many of them are wearing camo? :-) But I digress…)

If there is to be a next generation of viable conservative Republican candidates, we have to start finding them, grooming them, and funding them — or even being them. Would any HotAirians consider a run for office, even a local office? How about a position with the Republican Party? As overcommitted as we all are with work and family, I don’t know how we’re going to do it, but if we want to see change, we have to. It’s not going to be enough to wait to see if a new conservative party magically coalesces.

I’m going to start small. I’m going to take Election Day off work and be either a poll worker or a poll watcher. Who’s with me?

Dude, get with the program; that is SO 7 hours and 48 minutes ago!

The new liberal party line is that women are unqualified for public office - and a mother’s only place is in the home.

“I swear the seminar callers started drinking as soon as they got the news about Palin this morning and haven’t been far from the bottle since. The limit so far is a guy who called in to Medved saying that he couldn’t believe McCain chose a running mate who had a ’special needs’ child.
They really shouldn’t call until their masters send them the talking points.”

One last time as you seem to be profoundly slow on the uptake.

It is not so much your insults, as they are pathetic, it is your unnatural fondness, and at the “drop of a hat”, compared to an adult anyway, of repeatedly sounding like someone stuck in grade school.

Or to but it somewhat differently, do you get a nickle every time you use a$$ or jerk.

Grow up on someone else’s time.

Now don’t annoy me anymore.

So McCain is just pandering?

Yes. Why not Duncan Hunter? Why not Thompson? Why not…? I’d say McCain is a career politician (25+ years qualifies him for that title), and knows what he is doing. I’m utterly amazed that folks would think, “oh, he’s picked a conservative woman as his VP. Wow, we should forget all of his ills that will greatly damage the Rep. party and vote for him now.”

What the hell are you? A mindreader.

I’m not sure what hell has to do with this, but I digress. A “mindreader?” No. A person who analyzes motives, actions, behaviors of people and groups in order to determine future actions and behaviors? Yes.

I am a woman

Good for you. I am a man. I’m not sure how we could have ever gone any further in this conversation without having cleared that up.

I have been voting for decades and it really steams me that the only reason someone would think McCain would pick Palin is to pander.

Beyond the fact that I don’t much care how long you’ve been voting, I wonder: Is your assessment based upon philosophy, historical examples of success versus failure, or merely because of your gender?

What if he had picked Jindal? Would that be pandering?

I suppose it would have been pandering, but only in the sense that he would have chosen someone with similar philosophies as myself and many others who seek to preserve the Constitution; not give in to Global Warming (as both Palin and McCain do); lower private and corporate taxes to inspire growth; properly build, maintain, and utilize the military; etc.

You don’t want to vote for McCain? Fine. You think we would be better off with Obama/Biden running the country? Fine.

You are so incredibly shortsighted. What is truly more frightening is suffering 4 years of McCain (with a Democratic Congress), then, because of his inevitable failings due to having virtually the same platform as the Democrats, the Republicans losing even more seats in the Congress in 2010 and 2012, and losing the White House to Obama (or possibly Clinton). That scares me more than having Obama in the White House for 4 years, which will do nothing but mobilize conservatives in ways we haven’t seen in decades.
My solution: I’m going to use the write-in option and vote on principle (Duncan Hunter seems alright, maybe Fred Thompson.) It’s time for the Republicans to stop assuming we’ll vote for just anybody they throw at us. I’m also going to do what I can to make sure that a conservative gets elected to Congress from my State/district (such as Steve Sauerberg over Dick Durbin.)

But don’t lecture the rest of us on conservatism.

“On conservatism?” No. On proper analysis of 2nd and 3rd order effects? Yes.

This coming from the guy calling the other guy “Pupa in Larva Stage”. Seriously, if you’re gonna call it, don’t shoot yourself in the foot on the way there. Common sense, man.

Or to but it somewhat differently, do you get a nickle every time you use a$$ or jerk.

Again, I call ‘em as I see ‘em. You have a better suggestion for a word that encompasses the fullness of the situation? I’ll gladly use it.

MB4 on August 29, 2008 at 6:15 PM

What part of “I don’t allow myself to be censored” do you not understand? ;)

Remember, it was YOU who said you were going to ignore ME. Not vice versa. So far, you’re failing pretty miserably. If the worst you can do is tell me to leave you alone (after claiming you were going to ignore me) and changing my name, I don’t think I’ve much to fear from you.
