What Palin does for McCain, and to Obama

With multiple media outlets confirming now that Governor Sarah Palin will indeed join the Republican ticket as John McCain’s running mate, McCain has clearly chosen to play offense rather than defense. Instead of a safe choice, such as closest runner-up Mitt Romney or genial Everyman Tim Pawlenty, McCain took some risk with a relative newcomer to national politics. Palin will inject risk, excitement, controversy, and an unexpected historic note to the Republican convention.
First, though, let’s assess the risk. Palin has served less than two years as Governor of Alaska, which tends to eat into the experience message on which McCain has relied thus far. At 44, she’s younger than Barack Obama by three years. She has served as a mayor and as the Ethics Commissioner on the state board regulating oil and natural gas, for a total of eight years political experience before her election as governor. That’s also less than Obama has, with seven years in the Illinois legislature and three in the US Senate.
However, the nature of the experience couldn’t be more different. Palin spent her entire political career crusading against the political machine that rules Alaska — which exists in her own Republican party. She blew the whistle on the state GOP chair, who had abused his power on the same commission to conduct party business. Obama, in contrast, talked a great deal about reform in Chicago but never challenged the party machine, preferring to take an easy ride as a protegé of Richard Daley instead.
Palin has no formal foreign-policy experience, which puts her at a disadvantage to Joe Biden. However, in nineteen months as governor, she certainly has had more practical experience in diplomacy than Biden or Obama have ever seen. She runs the only American state bordered only by two foreign countries, one of which has increasingly grown hostile to the US again, Russia.
And let’s face it — Team Obama can hardly attack Palin for a lack of foreign-policy experience. Obama has none at all, and neither Obama or Biden have any executive experience. Palin has almost over seven years of executive experience.
Politically, this puts Obama in a very tough position. The Democrats had prepared to launch a full assault on McCain’s running mate, but having Palin as a target creates one large headache. If they go after her like they went after Hillary Clinton, Obama risks alienating women all over again. If they don’t go after her like they went after Hillary, he risks alienating Hillary supporters, who will see this as a sign of disrespect for Hillary.
For McCain, this gives him a boost like no other in several different ways. First, the media will eat this up. That effectively buries Obama’s acceptance speech and steals the oxygen he needs for a long-term convention bump. A Romney or Pawlenty pick would not have accomplished that.
Second, Palin will re-energize the base. She’s not just a pro-life advocate, she’s lived the issue herself. That will attract the elements of the GOP that had held McCain at a distance since the primaries and provide positive motivation for Republicans, rather than just rely on anti-Democrat sentiment to get them to the polls.
Third, and I think maybe most importantly, Palin addresses the energy issue better and more attuned to the American electorate than maybe any of the other three principals in this election. Even beyond her efforts to reform the Oil and Natural Gas Commission, she has demonstrated her independence from so-called “Big Oil” while promoting domestic production. She brings instant credibility to the ticket on energy policy, and reminds independents and centrists that the Obama-Biden ticket offers nothing but the same excuses we’ve heard for 30 years.
Finally, based on all of the above, McCain can remind voters who has the real record of reform. Obama talks a lot about it but has no actual record of reform, and for a running mate, he chose a 35-year Washington insider with all sorts of connections to lobbyists and pork. McCain has fought pork, taken real political risks to fight undue influence of lobbyists, and he picked an outsider who took on her own party — and won.
This is change you can believe in, and not change that amounts to all talk. McCain changed the trajectory of the race today by stealing Obama’s strength and turning it against him. Obama provided that opening by picking Biden as his running mate, and McCain was smart enough to take advantage of the opening.

Palin is not the Presidential candidate because we actually believe what we say about Obama’s inexperience, and because some Republicans are more interested in real achievement than in personal gain. Sarah Palin had the good sense not to attempt a run for President because she was unknown, inexperienced, and had only been governor for about a year at the beginning of the race. Like Bobby Jindal, she’s got a good job already, and doesn’t need another until she’s actually accomplished what she took the job to accomplish.
Palin is a sound, possibly even brilliant, pick for Veep, where she can gain name recognition and national government experience. She would have been a terribly weak pick for President.

Utter nonsense.
Obama does not have Hillary in his camp, and he knows it. Ms. Clinton still wants to be President, and her clear path — her only remaining path — begins with an Obama loss in 2008, which will allow her to run in 2012. If Obama wins, Ms. Clinton may as well start writing her personal memoirs, ’cause it only goes downhill from this point. Any aid she lends the Obama camp will be grudging, half-hearted, and deliberately ineffective.
And that goes double for Mr. Clinton.

So, tell me, as a conservative, why should I flock to Palin? Sure, she’s a woman (meaningless to me), she’s a former beauty queen (And?), a lifelong member of the NRA (well, tickle me pink), she likes hunting (So? I’m not looking for another hunting buddy), her Dad was a school teacher (Swell. Well my Dad is an electrician. I don’t much care about her Dad), her son’s in the Army (Cool, I’ll be sure to say hi if I see him), she’s the head of her state’s National Guard (Great, aren’t all governors?), pro-life (Oh good, finally a policy point), shares McCain’s views of Russian aggression in Georgia (Oh, so she also supports lots of talk, little action, alienating more of our allies?), supports the surge (Wonderful. I’m glad she’s figured out the value of this operational/strategic idea. So what are her War on Terror policy ideas?), shot down some pork (Good to hear. What are her thoughts on taxation, role of gov’t, state vs. federal roles, etc.)… I could go on, but I think you all get my point. Show me, don’t tell me she’s a conservative. Show me, don’t tell me, she’s good for this country. I care not for extraneous dribble, which is what most talk surrounding this woman is.
Sure, she may very well be a conservative, but (a) no one has proven this, (b) this does nothing to change the fact that McCain is not.

I went from being pessimistic about this pick to it causing me to wear a stupid grin on my face for most of the day.
I don’t even know if McCain – Palin will win. I still have doubts about their chances for success.
But for one day, at least, the Republicans sucker-punched the Jeebus out of the Democrats, and left them so utterly bewildered that it’s been hours of amusement to see them stutter and flail around over it.
Oh, and doing it the next day after HIS EMINENCE THE ONE~! OBAMA CHRIST!!’s “historic” speech – COMPLETELY stealing Zeus’ thunder – is just the oh-so-sweet frosting on the cake.

Well, first of all, it is not our job to spoon feed you. And second, you start off with a chip on your shoulder.
Sure you don’t want a hunting buddy, but to some the right to bear arms is an important amendment, you obviously don’t think so. She comes from humble background, and not a elitist background, some think that is important, you don’t. She is anti-tax, she lowered the taxes in AK, she is against pork (once again, look at what she has done), you apparently did not hear her speech or read any bio on her. Does she understand defense of a country?…well she is sitting on the border of Russia, with the most sophisticated military operation in the world in her state. That Coast Guard up there has more international run-ins with Russia then you could imagine. And her National Guard that she commands is the real deal, Russia is about 3 icebergs away. They have been cited as the most prepared National Guard in the U.S.
When you spend some time on your own, then you will find the answers you want…notice I said “you want”.

I agree with you about the “two evils” argument. Well, it isn’t an argument. It’s fallacious reasoning based on fear. I don’t believe that voting for the one guy out of fear of having the other one elected because they’re “worse” is the way to go. I will not vote out of fear, but out of reason. As conservatives, the last thing we should do is vote with our emotions, especially with fear. Brilliant pick:
1. She has more executive experience than Obama and Biden combined.
2. This messes up Hillary’s plans for 2012. If Obama wins, she has to wait until 2016. If McCain wins, this sets up Palin as the Republican front runner in 2012 and would be a real challenge for Hillary to overcome. Four years as VP has to trump eight years as First Lady. What is a poor lady to do when all her plans come apart?

Obama has accomplished nothing that I can think of except find questionable associates. Also, remember that he is the presidential candidate and she is the candidate for vice president. All the flack in the MSM about this pick probably comes from the fact that they had all their heavy hitters primed to take one of the other possible picks apart.
