Video: Palin knocks Biden on drilling, ties it to national security

And not just Biden either. Pay attention to what she says about Bush lacking a national energy policy and kowtowing to the Saudis to boost production, a line that’ll take a tiny bit of the sting out of the left’s “McSame” jabs. This’ll be her issue on the trail, for obvious reasons; presumably McCain will be having his duly appointed epiphany about ANWR any day now, since I cut about four minutes here of her explaining why people who wet themselves about the sainted caribou actually have no idea of what ANWR looks like and how little a threat drilling would pose to the environment. (You can watch the full interview at CNBC.) As predicted, the left is already pushing the line that she’s an ignoramus who’s on the ticket as an “affirmative action” pick, a policy to which the Democratic Party is now, suddenly and miraculously, opposed. See for yourself how ignorant she is. Exit question: Since it’s all about the second X chromosome, does anyone want to try arguing with a straight face that Kay Bailey Hutchison or Meg Whitman or Carly Fiorina would have provoked the sort of euphoria you’re seeing among conservatives today? The left’s right that someone here is treating all women as essentially fungible, but it ain’t John McCain.

My wife adores her, and I support her leadership and potential.

The phrase “affirmative action pick” is not one the Dems should be lunging for. It’s worse than attacking her supposed lack of experience in its potential blowback.

Ok I am sitting at home watching everyone swoon.

I am glad Allah put this on…. besides it shows pictures of the north slope. This is good and shows what is going on.

Caribou are all over up there. We couldn’t drive more then 5 to 10 MPH if they were on the dirt roads that connect the pads. Environmentalists were the ones who were bothering the Caribou more then the oil workers.

THis is a link on another thread here:

On Aug. 1, the same day the call for a vote on drilling began on the House floor, the Alaska state Senate approved a package of measures to license a new natural gas pipeline. House Bill 3001 lets Palin award the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act license to TransCanada Alaska, a pipeline builder that cast a winning bid of five.

The legislature had been trying for 30 years to authorize something like this and, up until now, had blown it. Palin got it through. Getting it off the ground, the state says, will be the biggest construction project in U.S. history.

Let that sink in. As a new governor, she had the sense of timing to act on something to deal with the energy crisis just when national attention was looking for a real solution. Striking while the iron is hot is innate; and it is difficult to learn and discern just when it’s hot and when it’s not. She also had to deal with a project that would go through another sovereign country; no mean feat to be sure. Then she showed a level of accountability and responsibility by staying true to the bidding process. I’m in the commercial construction industry, and five participants for a bid is pretty good. Some of the larger buildings I’ve been a part of only dealt with three or four steel fabricators in the bidding process. I’m impressed with her.

Weight of Glory on August 29, 2008 at 6:24 PM

It’s great to hear her talking about how it’s not feasible YET to go straight to alternative energy.

Killing our economy by not allowing us to use our oil, natural gas, and coal won’t make us get to renewable sources faster-we’ll be crippled and possibly taken over if we aren’t realistic about the energy we need NOW.

NTWR on August 29, 2008 at 6:25 PM

Can’t wait for the McCain turnaround on ANWR, it’s coming!

First order of business for Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin: explain this.

In fact, Palin’s plan looks similar in concept to Barack Obama’s plan. The state gave Alaskans $1200 checks from oil revenues as a one-time bonus to pay for increased fuel prices, a move Palin pushed. That echoes the Obama plan to send one-time rebates to taxpayers, funded by similar levies on oil companies.

However, the results in Alaska should warn the rest of the country about pursuing this policy. Already oil companies have stopped drilling on state lands, thanks to the tax burden Alaska imposes. It should be cheaper to drill and extract from these areas, but the oil companies have decided to focus their investment instead on the Gulf, where the costs and risks would normally be higher. In Alaska, the government takes 75% of the price on a barrel of oil at current prices, which gives them no incentive to work there.

If this plan gets pushed across the country in an Obama administration, then we can expect similar disincentives to curtail domestic production all across the nation.

I’m all for protecting animals. But like she said, caribou have been just fine with the pipelines and equipment there now. The caribou have become an excuse for not drilling — they’re not an authentic reason.

If my understanding of how Alaska oil revenues works… its based on a floor, where if prices are low, oil companies pay very little in taxes, but when prices spike, and their profits increase without any increase in cost to deliver, then the State takes more in taxes…

I personaly have absolutly no problem with that. Notice it says AT CURRENT PRICES… which are historicly high… they take 75%.

Yes, some companies will invest elsewhere due to lower tax burdens… BUT… as prices drop, the % of taxation will drop…

Heck, I bet oil companies would LOVE that kind of a plan.. and I say do it nationaly… if prices get below a certain level, than their taxes drop… so they can have a reasonable profit margin… but as prices spike? they pay more taxes (as long as costs do not increase as well)…

I think it would stabilize the market somewhat…

Yesterday on the eve of Barack Obama’s official nomination, John McCain sent what the New York Times called “a Valentine” campaign ad to Barack. Today McCain has pulled off the biggest coup of the election season with his selection of Alaska Gov Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Um, about last night — this morning’s announcement was Cupid’s arrow shot through that heart.

upinak on August 29, 2008 at 6:46 PM

The words that I put there were from HotAir’s own Ed Morrissey talking about how the policy was similar to Obama’s and was a disaster for oil companies looking to increase drilling. If her policy is put into action nationwide in a McCain/Palin Administration, it would be a windfall for government taking tax dollars from oil companies and a disaster for oil companies and a disaster for the American people getting oil.

I am not for the government punishing American oil companies, taking their money and then forcing America to continue to depend on foreign oil.

As I said, she needs to explain this. That along with McCain beating down on oil speculators as the cause of our energy problem.

Sorry I am not getting all euphoric over Palin in the same way that the Left is so euphoric over Obama. I see her as what she is: an imperfect poltician, just like everyone else. I’m not saying she is bad, but I’m not going to go all Chris Matthews over her… I want answers on issues. As everyone else should as well.
