Quote of the day
posted at 10:25 pm on August 29, 2008 by Allahpundit
“Here’s I fear the worst harm that may be done by this selection. The McCain campaign’s slogan is ‘country first.’ It’s a good slogan, and it aptly describes John McCain, one of the most self-sacrificing, gallant, and honorable men ever to seek the presidency.
But question: If it were your decision, and you were putting your country first, would you put an untested small-town mayor a heartbeat away from the presidency?”

As governor of Alaska, Palin presided over 600,000 or so people…with no urban center(s), and a budget smaller than that of the City University of New York’s. Small town mayor she remains, unless you count a population of 600,000 (only 400,000 more than my HOMETOWN of yonkers and 400,000 less than my home county) as real serious executive experience…and if you do…call Andy Spano over at the county executive’s office, im suuuuure he’s ready for a primetime spot in the next admin.!
If he needed a woman, he shoulda picked hutchinson.

I was wondering how long before someone was going to compare her to Maggie Thatcher. Why don’t we wait and see how successful she is at curbing McCain’s tendencies to f**k over his own party during his administration before we start awarding her the gold standard. Let’s just say for now she’s ‘articulate and clean’ and that’s good enough.
I don’t know if you caught the excitement a few weeks ago; Terrye’s partner in crime wise_man (whizzman as I call him)was screaming troll at people whenever they disagreed with any of his simpering paens to McCain and trying to have them banned. He was subsequently warned that not supporting John McCain doesn’t make you a troll. You want a real laugh Michael? Get Terrye started talking about reasons to support McCain…maybe it’s me, but whenver he/she starts in about supporting the party I start humming the old Russian National Anthem. No fun being a dissident these days. But think of how much fun it will be to say ‘I told you so’ if McCain does get elected.

Don’t you have more important thigs to focus on? Why be so puerile?
You are not very observant. If you take the time, or if you’d have paid attention, there have been threads on many a night that Michael in Michigan, Spirit of 1776, MB4, myself, and others, debated issues during the primaries. There is no way on this planet that a thinking person would conclude that Michael in Michigan (go check his blog) and MB4 could be the same person. You’re extremely naive and in a way also a bit vicious to insinuate “coziness”. The two love to debate, and the more you disagree, the better they are at it.
Many of us disagree with them, not on the sentiment, but maybe on the approach, primarily on MB4′s, but we have the capacity to argue with them, or to just read, or not read, and move on. You can not convert them and, thus, what do you gain from fighting them.
Take a good example from the great Spirit of 1776, and how he and the eloquent Michael in Michigan have debated in a civilized way in this very thread. We can sit back, agree, or disagree, but learn. You can also ignore.
You can also continue to be childish, but then we won’t take you seriously. I know that you want McCain to win. I want the same thing. This will happen with, or without MiM and MB4. Still, the two will continue to comment, and so they should.
Unrelated, has anyone seen alphie since the Palin announcement?

A “suicide pact” among those who think that there is such a profound day-and-night, life-and-death difference between McCain and Obama, if Obama wins, would seem far more plausible than among those who see far less difference between the two.
That is so elementary.

Don’t let the facts get in the way of feelings…
Palin was elected governor in 2006 after defeating incumbent governor Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary and former Democratic governor Tony Knowles in the general election. She was the youngest person, and the first woman, to be elected governor of Alaska. Before becoming governor, Palin served two terms on the Wasilla, Alaska, City Council from 1992 to 1996, and was elected and re-elected mayor of Wasilla for two three-year terms in 1996 and 1999. She also ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor of Alaska in 2002.
She’s not a quitter, that’s for sure.

Why would we commit suicide? It is we, who have been standing up shouting about how horrible is McCain for the past 9+ months, who are going to be needed to stop him from pushing through some of his bad policies.
On the other hand, if you’re talking about all the people who say “Vote McCain or Obama will Destroy the Country, nay, the WORLD!”, then, yeah, I worry about those people.
Me, I already know we are in store for a left-leaning President coming next (no matter who wins) with an extreme left-leaning Congress at his side. The next four years are going to be a LOT of work for conservatives to stop the President from putting forth a lot of bad policies.

Poptech on August 30, 2008 at 1:12 AM
David Frum, I’d put my trust in Sarah Palin and I would refuse you any in turn.
Palin has some excellent experience. But more over, Palin has what it takes to make a great VP and POTUS as well. And what really matters is that Palin has the decency, true grit, fortitude and judgment to succeed carrying the conservative torch into the 21st century.
Because Palin has all of the good potential and grounding foundation to fulfill her conservative and productive VP calling, detractors will shriek all the more shrill howls. To hell with evil and Marx. Obama and the Kennedy thugs act more and more like blood suckers.
Palin will choose her alliances and prove her perceptive talents as well as being able to keep things under wraps proving cogent wisdom. Her talent in speech and dialogue are already on record.
Thank God for all good things and send good thoughts Palin’s way. Sarah Palin need not cast any pearls before swine.

It depends what you are looking for. In economics? I doubt it. In energy? Yes. In Foreign Policy? I doubt it. In Pro-Life stuff? Yes. In results? No, not with both the Olympics and MA in Mitt’s bag. But her’s are not unimpressive because of how they were done.
Mitt may not have brought the excitement Palin did (and I don’t think this is a gender issue, but it’s not for me) and he may have brought negatives and division from the Huck train. Sad reality.

Have nothing to say it was or wasn’t an affirmative action pick. What I have seen today, since the announcement, is that Palin’s being picked has brought in some major segments of the GOP that were not on board with McCain.
I have also seen from a large number of blogs, media and other sources, that the GOP based is fired up in a way thought impossible a week ago. I have also seen a lot of bile and outright hostility aimed toward Palin by the Left since the announcement. Palin seems to have struck a chord a ong the Obamites…and shown them for who they really are.
Her being selected as an affirmative action VP seems moot in the bigger picture at this point.
As for Romney…his campaign ended when a huge segment of the GOP turned their backs on him because they were too timid to deal with a Mormon and someone who changed their mind about abortion.
Adding Romney to the McCain ticket would have been impossible…there is still too much friction between the two, even today.
Romney will campaign for the GOP and McCain, and he does a great job doing so from what I have seen thus far. But, adding another white guy to the ticket at this point, after the affirmation of Obama as the Holy One in Denver would have garnered how many Dems, Republicans, and independents for the McCain ticket?

She is more qualified than Romney on Energy policy? Why because people keep saying this and she says drill ANWR? WHAT? So some lobbyists tell her to do it makes her an expert? Every Alaskan politician is pro-drilling. You are not sure if she has more economic experience? What major corporation did she run (sportscaster)?

should the fact that EVERY media outlet is bashing her with the same lib talking points as “inexperienced”, a “who? why?” pick, and every jon stewart skewering her a billion times, should that make us:
A) worried jmac blew it and really picked someone unworthy
B) reassured the dems are SCARED like crazy and mccain-palin as reform will ride us to victory
i say this as a PALIN! fan all the way, but i was astonished tonight at the level of “instant” hatred… a couple news sites had stories about “PALIN BELIEVES IN TEACHING CREATIONISM” right above “PALIN EMBROILED IN SCANDAL”
chris matthews, reading from some printout (i figure msnbc is the worst so i watch to see the worst possible rants) was going off, claiming she was in favor of pat buchanan’s culture wars, claiming she wanted to outlaw every abortion all the time, claiming she was a radical, out of touch with regular moms….
he kept saying “she said i dont have much interest in iraq”…. DUDE HER KID IS GOING THERE IN 2 WEEKS. SHE WILL UNDERSTAND IT PLENTY!
can it be that JMac picked a home run, or are the media effete elite right (for once)
i wish it was great, but even abcnews (who i consider much ‘closer’ to the middle than any of the big 3) was repeating obama talking points tonight….
which is it? reassure me…. i thought all day how wonderful this was, how it was a slam dunk…. now i hear the exact opposite from every dem. if they were really scared, why would they all be saying “MCCAIN just lost the election”

aphie was here earlier and I actually found myself agreeing with his/her posts a few times when s/he pointed out some the more ridiculous adulatory comments being about Palin. I don’t mind praise of Palin, but, some people were just going so over the top, it was like reading the reverse of Obamania. No, not in the sense of messianic worship of an empty suit; I know Palin is much, much more accomplished. But the over-the-top hip-hip-hooRAY! comments about a VP candidate, when our Presidential candidate still sucks was grating.
So I had to laugh and agree with alphie calling out some of those going over-the-top. Probably the first and last time that ever happens… me agreeing with anything alphie posts. heh

No, I didn’t say that. Mine was a soft way of saying no.
For the same reason people think we should listen to the generals who have boots on the ground. If you don’t agree, that’s fine.
The reality of the fact is that as a VP she doesn’t negate anyone else’s strength. Mitt can, and should, still be a great asset to a McC administration.
No need to over-minimize.

Palin was not nominated to allow John to attack Barry’s inexperience Palin was nominated so the MSM and Team O-pollo would attack her percieved inexperience. Guess what it was a stupid avenue of approach that O-pollo now recants. McCain is playing 3-d chess while mouthbreathers play checkers. He is controlling Barry not the other way around.
Her announcement relegated Keef’s “symphony” ie “best or even BETTER speech than MLK” moot within an hour of sunraise today.
I am less than a fan of John but he or his people played Barry like a fiddle.
She is there to bring in the conservative base that is at all adaptable to any change of their status quo-fundraising says a LOT of us

sven10077 on August 30, 2008 at 1:29 AM
She’s female and was picked for that reason, in part, but that doesn’t make it necessarily an “Affirmative Action” pick, a quota. Elections are strategic in great part.
If you are a die hard Romney person, I was for him in the primaries, after Fred Thompson got out. However, imagine the McCain ticket with Romney, as good as Romney is at the executive level, experience, etc.:
- Instant picture of two older and rich guys versus two ‘average Joes’. Note the single quotes, because I don’t believe that crap, but the media would have.
- The evangelicals wouldn’t ever reconcile to a Mormon. Fight it all you wish, there is that bigotry and it is what it is. I disagree with it but it ain’t goin’ away soon. To your “Pope” comment, they seem to suffer Catholics easier than Mormons, still. Yes, it’s insane, but it is.
- Romney will be prominent in very big positions, I assure you. If that’s what you wish, make sure Obama doesn’t win.
Now, I have not followed your comments enough. If you’re a liberal, then please excuse this comment, or just get annoyed by it. Otherwise, all the best,

You got me…instead of being an all-star basketball player she could have been doing DeKuyper’s and snorting coke like Messiah the Lightowrker and getting into the Ivy League with a drug habit and a B average…..

Guess there are still a lot of people who are impressed by a sheepskin on the wall.
Advanced degress do not automatically translate into leadership.
If that were the case, most of our Presidents would never have set foot in the White House. Reagan wasn’t an academic, had no fancy law degrees from some Ivy League school. Did pretty good in the leadership category, though.
Clinton graduated from Georgetown, Oxford and Yale. And all his academic credentials translated into what? A micromanager of the first order.

I’d rather Romney be the king of his domain – cabinet secretary, for example – than Vice President. I’ve said it before: a VP is as relevant as the President lets him be.
From the stories, McCain wanted Lieberman, and the GOP wouldn’t let him have Lieberman. Forcing Romney on a notorious crank would be bad all the way around. I could see Maverick taking it out on his shotgun-wedding VP for four years.
Mitt’s turnaround skills would be better suited to cleaning up the executive branch or bureaucracy one department at a time.

The idea at this point in the game is to WIN. The Palin pick takes the wind out of the Obama sails. She has more executive experience than Obama, and she’s the VP pick, not the presidential candidate.
She closes lots of loops, women who were leaning toward McCain after Hillary lost, anti-abortion, anti-corruption, fiscal conservative, the West, energy experience, real life/real people experience, working mothers, the disabled, etc. It’s a long list. Plus she’s tough enough to go up against Biden without crying.
And the fact that she isn’t a lawyer is in her favor in my book.

not a great way to instantly categorize those teaching your existing or future children
besides, i don’t give a heck if my kid’s 5th grade teacher can define “inchoate” or define the Cosine ratio. i want him/her to teach my kid’s skills, to discipline them, to teach them to respect authority, and to fulfill the requirements set by the state. plus, that teacher needs to be PASSIONATE about reaching young people, and shouldn’t mind having to stand up at their jobs all day, except for the nice 25 minute lunch break between recess duty.
but, oh yeah, what idiots those education majors are because they didn’t sign up for Kaplan’s “learn vocab words for $500″ courses…. i mean, surely the almighty analogies+fractions of the sat define what we need in american teachers?
wow.

Win or lose it was a bold pick by Johnny Mac. Grit. They both have it. That is what scares the hell outta nutroots.

I’m watching her being interviewed right now on CNBC and she doesn’t sound like a pompus blowhard like Biden and she isn’t stuttering like Obama without a teleprompter.
The idea that a degree, of any kind, equates to mental prowess is typical elitist b.s.
Obiden is toast. Deal with it.
TheCulturalist on August 30, 2008 at 1:52 AM
i think you misunderstood… i put those % up as a reminder that the vast majority of america DOESNT have college degrees, and wouldn’t see letters on a wall as instant credibility.
most people assume they themselves are pretty smart.
and again… this is Joe “indians in dunkin donuts” Biden we are talking about…. what a genius!

How are the journalists going to attack her degree in journalism?
I bet some of you attacking her degree didn’t do very good in your studies. Don’t bother to respond.

Crossing my fingers and toes. I was sure it would be Mitt, which would be OK by me, but I have to tip my hat to Sydney for stirring up the pot.

In total agreement with you. Just elaborating on a finer point. Most normal folks don’t like elitists showing off their credentials and looking down on them at the same time.
[BTW, like the "handle." Epic sea battle. Kept the Ottoman's from taking over Western Europe. Lord knows what sort of blog this would be if that had happened 500 years ago.]

I expected Mitt too, but this works for me. I’m surprised and impressed by the enthusiasm, including myself. And with her speech she reinforced that; needless to say I didn’t get a lot of work done, heh. Anyway, punching out for the night. Cheers.

What is sad is I understood what Kerry was saying and all the GOP handlers let the dumb part of the party run with this. Kerry was directing his comments at BUSH not the soldiers. All you do is prove my point about education.

wait a sec why would a master debater like Jean Francois make a statement we mere plebes could misconstrue in such a grievous way????
