Pessimistic blogger feeling pessimistic about pick

posted at 3:37 pm on August 29, 2008 by Allahpundit

Ponnuru, Halperin, and Jonah Goldberg have fleshed out most of the negatives so read them first, paying particular attention to Goldberg’s point about Palin’s parochialism. The Dan Quayle narrative is already circling overhead in search of a gaffe to alight on, which is why, fairly or not, Obama’s lack of experience isn’t as damaging as hers. Whatever you think of Barry O, he’s got intelligence to spare to handle the job; a voter worried that Obama doesn’t know what he’s in for can console himself with the fact that he’ll be a quick study. That may be true of Palin too but she doesn’t have much time to show it, which is why every last mistake on the trail will be magnified to “prove” that she’s a hick who’s out of her depth. She’ll have to be letter perfect, especially in the debate with Biden, to convince independents she’s up to it. If she isn’t, I think McCain’s support in the center will collapse as people worry, as I did with Pawlenty and now with Palin herself, that we’re handing the keys to the kingdom to a totally unknown quantity who’s one 72-year-old heartbeat away from being commander-in-chief. Think she can be perfect for 67 days? Can anyone?

The good news is that everyone to the right of the nutroots will be rooting for her to do well, so personally appealing and comparatively guileless is she. That’ll buy her some leeway, as will the fact that Team Barry has to tread lightly when attacking a small-town girl in the year of PUMAs and Bittergate. But the Obama camp doesn’t have to do the attacking; the media, scrambling for a prefab storyline, will supply the clueless yokel ammunition for them. Check out CNN’s post from a few minutes ago picking up on that veep clip I just wrote about. Quote:

“As for that V.P. talk all the time,” she told CNBC’s Larry Kudlow in late July, “I tell ya, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me: What is it exactly that the V.P. does every day?”

Are McCain’s and Obama’s interviews usually transcribed phonetically like that, with “ya” in place of “you”? The meme’s already aloft, you see. I’m not sold on the idea that she’s going to attract women voters either, especially Hillary types. One of the subtler virtues of the hick meme is that even if it doesn’t convince voters she’s dumb, it might at least convince PUMAs that she’s not “our kind” of woman. The left is exceptionally good at authenticity games, and the better Palin does on the trail, the more fervently they’re going to push the idea that she’s a traitor to her gender whom no “real” feminist would ever support. My boss gets that from them 24/7. Here’s Susan Estrich, taking a tiny step in that direction by making the otherwise pedestrian point that Hillary and Palin aren’t political twins:

She paid her dues. She walked through fire. She survived. It’s hard to give that up, not only hard for her to give up the dream but also hard for the rest of us.

What does any of that have to do with Sarah Palin?

Only Her Majesty, forged in the furnace of overweening privilege, deserves real respect. That point’s metastasizing already, in fact, into an argument that picking Palin actually proves McCain’s contempt for women voters insofar as it shows he thinks they’re automatons who’ll vote on the basis of gender and nothing more. That’s pure garbage — the near-hysterical enthusiasm on the right today proves her appeal goes deeper than her sex — but I’m positively aching at the thought of our nuanced left affecting high dudgeon for the next two months over, of all things, identity politics. You turds invented this game. Don’t cry because you’re suddenly getting beat at it. When Hillary stops making “plantation” references to the GOP on MLK Day, Palin will stop pitching herself to women voters, how’s that?

So there’s the pessimism. Now the praise: Not only is this the most galvanizing pick Maverick could have made, but the thought of watching progressives tie themselves in knots over the next two months trying to square the inevitable attacks on the “bimbo” beauty queen with poor, poor Hillary’s sexist treatment by the media is worth it even if we lose. Imagine the sort of crap that’ll be airing against her on MSNBC come mid-October. I haven’t cut a check for a candidate since 2004, but I’m suddenly inspired. Here’s the link.

Update: One other thing. I don’t think Palin’s going to make the play for the center; I think she’s going to anchor the base, which is suddenly in love, so that Maverick can go be his old mavericky self with independents. Short of reversing himself on abortion, there’s not much he could do at this point to make conservatives stay home.

Think she can be perfect for 67 days? Can anyone?

Can she be gaffe-free? Realistically, yes. However, if she does manage to make it these two months without a single malleable phrase, then the media will simply cherry-pick a few and edit them to the best of their ability. That would happen with any candidate that McCain picked, though. The difference is that it will be harder to target America’s next sweetheart.

MadisonConservative on August 29, 2008 at 4:12 PM

My Liberal co workers all seem to hate her. This makes me like her.

koypop on August 29, 2008 at 4:12 PM

The risk that Palin will blurt a major gaffe is a potential risk – past or present – a play into the hands of any political pundit left or right.

Did you not watch her effortlessly breeze through that barn-burner of a speech today? Have you not seen her many articulate national interviews in behalf of the McCain campaign?

jgapinoy on August 29, 2008 at 4:13 PM

Also, Joe Biden is gaffe prone, e.g., Barack Obama is a “clean” black man. Mark my words: In a debate with Sarah Palin, Biden will say something offensive about women.

paul006 on August 29, 2008 at 4:13 PM

Which is fine. But it doesn’t mean we can’t do our due diligence.

Jim Treacher on August 29, 2008 at 4:03 PM

Allah’s point is well taken. The risk that Palin will blurt a major gaffe is a potential risk –

Kini on August 29, 2008 at 4:10 PM

And the riks that Biden will blurt a major gaffe is pretty much guaranteed.

But who’s “gaffes” will get the most media report?

Biden will say something offensive about women.

paul006 on August 29, 2008 at 4:13 PM

Give the woman a chance before you start cutting her up.

TheBigOldDog on August 29, 2008 at 4:14 PM

It’s not the fact that she is a woman that makes this pick so exciting, it’s that she represents the future of this party. She and Jindal are the kind of new blood that this party so desperately needs to shed the image that led to their downfall in 2006.

Dudley Smith on August 29, 2008 at 4:15 PM

It was hilarious today listening to Ed Schultz defend that tool of a state trooper Mike Wooten. Accusing Palin of being manipulative for trying to fire the a-hole for threatening to kill her father, tasering an 11 year old and violating game laws ( poaching ?? ). Then sad Ed tried to draw a parallel with DOJ prosecutor firings. Way to go Ed. Is this the best you got ? You can smell the panic! The game is on!

squidly on August 29, 2008 at 4:15 PM

Allah, I believe what you are saying is that you hope Palin does not pull a Jeanine Pirro. One day almost down 66 days to go. Lets keep those pages in order for the next 67+ days Sarah! This one’s going to be a nail biter.

You need to watch the video clips you post more often.

SaintOlaf on August 29, 2008 at 4:15 PM

I would like to add that McCain was not only able to solidify the base with this pick, he was also able to extend a branch to Hillary voters and ‘historical’ voters. It is rare that one can kill two birds with one stone like that considering the distance on the political spectrum. I don’t think any other VP candidate had that capability.

Spirit of 1776 on August 29, 2008 at 4:15 PM

I think she is a great pick. Her prior comments tell me she is honest and intelligent and not some person who has spent her whole life trying to be a politician…I just donated to McCain\Palin

CCRWM on August 29, 2008 at 4:15 PM

Allah is spot on re the margin of error that Palin has. Which is zero.

The problem for candidates with little experience or background is that they have nothing to fall back upon when they make an error.

McCain can foulup the Shia and Sunni names/sects but reasonable people know that he knows the difference. Or that he has the people around him who will tell him.

With Palin – and yes, Obama – we’re less sure.

This is a gamble that McCain didn’t need to take. It may reinforce his maverick image or it may buttress the reckless charge made by critics.

In any event, even if Palin performs flawlessly, I don’t think it will make any difference in the outcome of the election. If she doesn’t, it may make just enough of a difference to cost him the presidency.

Much to lose; nothing to gain.

Not a mention of the Drill Drill Drill issue – the critical issue of the day.

A Romney pick would bring out the “Rich White Guys” issue and bury the McCain-Romney ticket permanently. It would be a first trimester abortion for that ticket. And I voted for Romney..

Memorize this line when you get all impressed with Barry O and want to belittle Palin:
A GOVERNOR CANNOT VOTE ‘PRESENT’

I’ve been in the tank for Palin since I first heard about her back in February. I’ll allow myself a brief “w00t!” and then it’s time to get to work:

1. This post by AP is one of the reason I feel more at home on the right. We (at least not all of us) tend to avoid the tendency to drink our own Kool-Aid. She’s a brilliant pick, and I’m solidly behind her (and his mavericky Maverickness), but as someone else pointed out, there’s no point in ignoring her negatives — she does have some, and the left/MSM (yes, I know I’m being redundant) sure won’t ignore them.

2. Those of us contributing money to McCain — great. But what the GOP really NEEDS (desperately) this year is a ground game. Don’t stop with the contributions. Contact your local RNC office & volunteer. Put up the signs & bumper stickers. Go door-to-door. Man the phone banks. Sign up to be a poll monitor. Get out there.

All of that said, I’m fairly well elated with this pick. There’s no perfect candidate — no matter who he picked, there was always going to be *some* vulnerability. Given the particulars of this specific election year, I think Palin was the best (if admittedly imperfect) choice to make.

PALIN

Purple Fury on August 29, 2008 at 4:17 PM

By the way Allah:

If the unthinkable happens and we lose McCain while in Office. Palin steps in and has to choose a VP herself why not pull an Obama and put in a seasoned conservative like Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney to look over her shoulder…

STOP FRETTING OVER NOTHING!

Obama’s got intelligence to spare to handle the job

Whether his intelligence will help with the job is debatable, but he has shown himself to be politically savvy to get the nomination through the Clinton machine. He may be vacuous, but he has used it very very well. It just doesn’t age well.

Spirit of 1776 on August 29, 2008 at 4:18 PM

Bwahahaha
Your stance being that a man has intelligence to spare where a woman hasn’t. LOL, see where that gets you, to hell.

In all reality, I dare you to compare reality to reality Obama vs. Palin instead of your bigoted and chauvinistic wish list against intelligent, productive, capable and EXPERIENCED conservative women.

Round One: Executive Experience
“Community organizer” Marxist illegal voter registrant turned Senator who neither attends meetings nor votes beyond “present” Obama.
vs.
Union and NRA Member, PTA Organizer, City Council Member, Mayor, and Governor Palin who enjoys strong constituent support having already accomplished her reform platform.

1. Nice speech, now answer the question.
2. Nice speech, do make crap up in advance or as you go along?

Much might be made of Palin’s comment on “What does a VP do?”
But it is a good question. Besides waiting for POTUS to die or vote when there’s a tie vote in the Senate. Just what else does a VP do?

GarandFan on August 29, 2008 at 4:19 PM

Potfry on August 29, 2008 at 4:19 PM

Allah, your pessimism not only assumes the very weakest profile for Palin; it also concedes the very strongest profile for Biden and Obama.

Biden’s a human gaffe-machine fueled by arrogance and a bombastic mouth- and Obama is an over-sold “intellectual” who is really a human-script machine propped up by high dollar speech writers and brightly lit teleprompters. Or have we all forgotten his performance at the Saddleback Church?

Is the pessimism the inevitable by-product of your atheism; or is atheism the inevitable by-product of your pessimism?

oops, did I say “dark”, I meant to say lacking color. damn! umm, can I buy a vowel?

kirkill on August 29, 2008 at 4:20 PM

Positives: The VEEP roll-out was done perfectly. Palin has a lot going for her. Criticism of her lack of experience, being a country bumpkin, and lack of elite credentials, only demonstrate the elitism and bias of her critics. In terms of the DC culture of corruption, I’m thinking Sarah Palin is the Corruption Terminator (I keep mis-naming her Sarah Connor), and just what DC needs.

Doubts: She will make mistakes. Everybody does. She is going to have to prove herself on the national stage quickly, continuously, and with insignificant prior experience. When she slips or is bumped and falls, she darn well better be able to pick herself up and fight, like she did when playing basketball. If she does, we win. If she doesn’t, we won’t. That’s the risky part of the choice.

One Negative: Palin and the McCain team have no control over how her opponents in Alaska (from both parties) delay and hype the “troopergate scandal.” It is being done already. I have no idea how to address this other than with her own words that she has nothing to hide.

In general I feel optimistic, but I am a worrier.

Loxodonta on August 29, 2008 at 4:20 PM

“They don’t want to defeat Sarah…they want to destroy her.”

True, but that grenade will go off in several directions, not just one.

GarandFan on August 29, 2008 at 4:20 PM

Think she can be perfect for 67 days?

She really just needs to work the hotness factor. She needs to be our “celebrity”, as it were. A lot of morons in this country are celebrity/looks obsessed, and I think Palin could snag some “attractiveness” votes away from the one, considering their support for him is pretty shallow.

RightWinged on August 29, 2008 at 4:20 PM

Pundits say that the Palin pick was a mistake because it takes away McCain’s standing to argue that BO is too inexperienced on foreign policy matters for the job. I think they’re looking at this the wrong way. Rather, it’s BO’s own inexperience that now gives McCain license to select a VP candidate with limited foreign policy experience.

all I could think of is, “you have to be out of your freaking mind!” This is a woman who came from nowhere and took down the ‘establishment’ GOP’s incumbent to be where she is to day! Did you even look at the precentage of the vote she got? You don’t get that way by being a ‘hick’! And maybe BO can deliver better speeches if he’s reading them off a teleprompter but she STILL has more REAL experience than he does. He just talks about what he can do, he hasn’t actually done anything. Can you name something he’s done? She stood up there and gave a speech saying EXACTLY what she’s done. Yeah- but she’s a Dem activist. It’s to be expected- she’s not paid to be objective even if she’s more reasonable than most of her peers. However, McCain’s VP announcement has been a distracion (see what I did there?) from Obama’s speech last night- instead of the MSM gushing non-stop about it until Monday, now Palin is dominating the news right up through the convention.

Were the pick a well known person, it wouldn’t have generated as much buzz. Now the likes of KP writing about Obama’s speech have to take a back seat to the Palin coverage.

Well Allah, I think this analysis misses the larger point. The first aspect of the Palin choice isn’t that she’s a woman, its that she directly repairs McCain’s longtime achilles heel, that is, she’s adored by the leadership of Christian Conservatives and Evangelicals. Those people will walk the very last mile to get McCain elected now, because he listened to their pleas and selected a top-notch pro-lifer.

Also, your analysis of ‘women’ in the Democrat party (or PUMA’s) focuses on the wrong women, or at least the wrong type. Its not the loud feminists that McCain will pick up but many of those soccer mom women out there in Bitterclingerland. They’re the one’s that will vote for this ticket.

One more point, this pick absoulutely puts fresh and exciting energy into the Republican Party and we’ve been kinda run down lately.

Whew, pessimism is right. Your scarcely veiled, or at least unconscious, contempt for the average American voter is on display here.

Apparently you believe that the majority of them mindlessly believe anything the Left and their supporters in the media decide to say. If that were true, why would the networks and major newspapers be crumbling while the blogosphere audience continues to rise?

I have more confidence in even run-of-the-mill Democrats than you do, and I have a pretty low opinion of them.

JDPerren on August 29, 2008 at 4:28 PM

politically savvy to get the nomination through the Clinton machine.

The DNC proved to NOT be the Clinton machine beyond Bill’s terms in office. The Kennedy Klan has made it perfectly obvious who ran the DNC, who runs the DNC on the Senate floor, and who continues to run the DNC now and forever.

Hillary wouldn’t suck the tit Obama milks for all it’s worth.

BTW, savvy nuance will never enumerate how many properties and compounds are owned by the Kennedys.

You turds invented this game. Don’t cry because you’re suddenly getting beat at it.

But they will cry, and loudly, if the Messiah loses.

Quick question: Will Palin be Olberdouche’s Worst Person In the World tonight? Probably 50-50 right now.

I’m surprised and excited by this pick, regardless of the negatives attached. It’s a roll of the dice, but it’s probably the best VP pick to bring reluctant conservatives back into the fold.

If Obama is so damn smart, why did he hang out with far-out crooks and lefties like Wright, Rezko and Ayers? Why doesn’t he know the number of states in the Union or that North By Northwest wasn’t actually filed ON Mount Rushmore?

My opinion of Harvard Law school is greatly diminished.

Whatever you think of Barry O, he’s got intelligence to spare to handle the job; a voter worried that Obama doesn’t know what he’s in for can console himself with the fact that he’ll be a quick study.

Wait. Stop. Back up and back that up.

This is a constant media meme. “Barack’s so articulate!” (He’s plainly not – that’s just soft bigotry). “Barack’s so intelligent!”

Evidence, please? I keep hearing this. What is the proof. I suspect – again – its code for “he’s a black man who can speak.”

But I may be wrong. And I’m training myself now to watch carefully for unsupported assertions from the media. And that meme is a constant one. It’s tossed out there like its unquestionable. Like “the sky is blue.”

So what gives? Who says he’s smart? Bush has Yale and Harvard degrees – how come “at least Bush is smart!” was never accepted without questioning.

Seriously. I’m really trying to understand this one. Who is he smarter than? How do we know?

Frankly, I think that a career politician sitting in an anti-American church for 20 years is pretty strong evidence refuting his intelligence.

Is he a Mensa member? Did he ace his SATs or something? Voted most likely to work for Bill Gates in high school?

What?

Professor Blather on August 29, 2008 at 4:30 PM

As far as her inexperience contributing to the “gaffe” fear, remember this: gaffes, and their damage, are primarily a media driven phenomenon. We don’t have the MSM on “our side” and however small a gaffe she makes, and she will make them, will be blown way out of proportion. But this would be true no matter who the nominee is. And we have all witnessed the gaffes Obama has made, and we have lost count on Biden’s, Pelosi says she wants to “drill their heads”, and do I need to mention Robert Byrd’s colorful verbal ejaculations? Political experience and being “smart” on paper doesn’t protect you from gaffes (I voted for the 87 billion before I voted against it), but a sympathetic media does protect you from it; and we will never have them on our side. So let’s not worry about that negative, in terms of it being unique to Palin.

Weight of Glory on August 29, 2008 at 4:31 PM

I tend to be a bit pessimistic as well, allah. I fear that this will be seen as a gimmick. On the other hand, given the horrendous picks McCain could have made, a pro-life, pro-gun, pro-drilling, anti-corruption VP selection coming from him is not bad.

Coronagold on August 29, 2008 at 4:31 PM

I’m sorry to keep repeating this but… Vice-President is an excellent place from which to get foreign policy experience. She doesn’t have to be ready to be president yet. She’s number two. McCain will give her a couple years at least.

It is gruesome to go there but… She is the back up, not the main event. And she is better qualified than Barack Obama! Obama is as likely to have to replace Biden than McCain is to tap Palin.

This is a fine pick.

And I found this quote from Mitt Romney about it:

“Governor Palin’s story is one that all Americans will find inspiring. She’s a Washington outsider with a commitment to the conservative principles that will make our nation stronger. I look forward to campaigning for Senator McCain, Governor Palin and Republicans all across the country.”

Mitt is a class act. His priority is the good of America. At the expense of his own ego. I respect him more everyday.

Now that I and many others have mildly slapped down AP — though not nearly enough for his one truly boneheaded comment (“Obama’s got intelligence to spare to handle the job”) — I have to give him credit: he puts his opinion out there and lets us comment.

Arianna Huffington, who I know has more b*lls than her ex-husband, anyway, seems to have shut off comments for all her hate-bloggers who are trying, with the usual lefty-loon lack of logic, to slime Palin. The inevitable occasional critical comment might have made her mascara run.

I can break down what AP said just like he broke down his thoughts on Palin. If I don’t agree, I can state that. And if I vehemently don’t agree, I can state that too. AP has been around long enough in the blogsphere to be able to handle it without any of you defending him. So you can chill and go to Charles’s website if you don’t like it and I’ll stay right here. Thanks for your input anyway.

Palin refers to herself as “mama”.

Michelle refers to Barack as “the daddy of my children”.

maverick muse on August 29, 2008 at 4:36 PM

I’m going to say this Allah, and you might not like it, but it’s true. I’ve been a fan of yours since Rathergate, but you need to recognize something: your feelings on this run counter to those of the vast majority of your readers and supporters.

This is what Sarah Palin does for the Republican ticket in 2008. For the first time since McCain won the primary, conservative republicans are enthusiastic about the election. That may seem like a small thing, but it’s huge to us. We were prepared to go to the ballot box out of a sense of duty to vote against Obama. Now we are excited that we go to vote FOR someone.

Yes, we should go into this with our eyes open. But no, we should not dedicate our lives to doing what 90% of the dems are going to do, which is find every imaginable angle by which to discredit her and find fault with her. That responsibility passed from our hands to theirs today when she was chosen to be McCain’s VP. At that point, our job transitioned from vetting and advocating to supporting and defending.

If you can seriously say that you’re considering voting for Obama/Biden, then I apologize and encourage you to do your research so that you can make the best pick. But if you’re a conservative, we’ve all had our say, and now we have our ticket.

Immolate on August 29, 2008 at 4:36 PM

This point needs to be made:

The Dems/Media are going to paint Palin as an inexperienced “hick”- regardless.

So she has nothing to lose. The bar has been set low- not only can she live down to this “profile”; she can also (quite easily) surpass it.

She didn’t get where she is at by…say….running virtually uncontested in her State- like some people (Barry O) She didn’t attain her EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE by lauding long and lofty platitudes upon mindless minions of fringe-thinking supporters.

She did it with intelligence and integrity.
Believe it or not- that still matters to most voters.

Despite what we had to navigate to get to this point (Ridge, Liebs, etc.), it was a brilliant pick!

This woman has been a LEADER since she was a teenager.

Point guard = leader of the basketball team. Her team won the state championship (and if you think they don’t play basketball in Alaska, go Google “Carlos Boozer” and “Trajan Langdon.”)

PTA President = leader. I’ve known a lot of them in my life and it can be a tough job. Certainly tougher than “community organizer.” PTA presidents have to raise money, put together budgets, run meetings, and often have to “herd cats” with loud and obnoxious parents pulling them in different directions.

Mayor = leader. She cut her salary, cut taxes, and improved services as she promised.

Governor = leader. She beat an incumbent governor in the primary too, no easy task in any state.

rockmom on August 29, 2008 at 4:40 PM

Character, character, CHARACTER is the difference. Palin lives ethics, she lives pro-life, and she lives middle class realities. No one has enough experience to be President, but we know Mac has enough character to be — and between Joe, Barack and Sarah, I’ll take Sarah as no.2 on character alone.

One of the first things I thought of. He takes a great risk trying to “punch her in the nose”, or whatever his schtick is supposed to be. He could lose the election for Obama in one snarky sentence. DU-types would love it, but people who are more casually in Obama’s corner would react viscerally, I believe – not that she couldn’t handle it.
