Pessimistic blogger feeling pessimistic about pick

Ponnuru, Halperin, and Jonah Goldberg have fleshed out most of the negatives so read them first, paying particular attention to Goldberg’s point about Palin’s parochialism. The Dan Quayle narrative is already circling overhead in search of a gaffe to alight on, which is why, fairly or not, Obama’s lack of experience isn’t as damaging as hers. Whatever you think of Barry O, he’s got intelligence to spare to handle the job; a voter worried that Obama doesn’t know what he’s in for can console himself with the fact that he’ll be a quick study. That may be true of Palin too but she doesn’t have much time to show it, which is why every last mistake on the trail will be magnified to “prove” that she’s a hick who’s out of her depth. She’ll have to be letter perfect, especially in the debate with Biden, to convince independents she’s up to it. If she isn’t, I think McCain’s support in the center will collapse as people worry, as I did with Pawlenty and now with Palin herself, that we’re handing the keys to the kingdom to a totally unknown quantity who’s one 72-year-old heartbeat away from being commander-in-chief. Think she can be perfect for 67 days? Can anyone?
The good news is that everyone to the right of the nutroots will be rooting for her to do well, so personally appealing and comparatively guileless is she. That’ll buy her some leeway, as will the fact that Team Barry has to tread lightly when attacking a small-town girl in the year of PUMAs and Bittergate. But the Obama camp doesn’t have to do the attacking; the media, scrambling for a prefab storyline, will supply the clueless yokel ammunition for them. Check out CNN’s post from a few minutes ago picking up on that veep clip I just wrote about. Quote:
“As for that V.P. talk all the time,” she told CNBC’s Larry Kudlow in late July, “I tell ya, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me: What is it exactly that the V.P. does every day?”
Are McCain’s and Obama’s interviews usually transcribed phonetically like that, with “ya” in place of “you”? The meme’s already aloft, you see. I’m not sold on the idea that she’s going to attract women voters either, especially Hillary types. One of the subtler virtues of the hick meme is that even if it doesn’t convince voters she’s dumb, it might at least convince PUMAs that she’s not “our kind” of woman. The left is exceptionally good at authenticity games, and the better Palin does on the trail, the more fervently they’re going to push the idea that she’s a traitor to her gender whom no “real” feminist would ever support. My boss gets that from them 24/7. Here’s Susan Estrich, taking a tiny step in that direction by making the otherwise pedestrian point that Hillary and Palin aren’t political twins:
She paid her dues. She walked through fire. She survived. It’s hard to give that up, not only hard for her to give up the dream but also hard for the rest of us.
What does any of that have to do with Sarah Palin?
Only Her Majesty, forged in the furnace of overweening privilege, deserves real respect. That point’s metastasizing already, in fact, into an argument that picking Palin actually proves McCain’s contempt for women voters insofar as it shows he thinks they’re automatons who’ll vote on the basis of gender and nothing more. That’s pure garbage — the near-hysterical enthusiasm on the right today proves her appeal goes deeper than her sex — but I’m positively aching at the thought of our nuanced left affecting high dudgeon for the next two months over, of all things, identity politics. You turds invented this game. Don’t cry because you’re suddenly getting beat at it. When Hillary stops making “plantation” references to the GOP on MLK Day, Palin will stop pitching herself to women voters, how’s that?
So there’s the pessimism. Now the praise: Not only is this the most galvanizing pick Maverick could have made, but the thought of watching progressives tie themselves in knots over the next two months trying to square the inevitable attacks on the “bimbo” beauty queen with poor, poor Hillary’s sexist treatment by the media is worth it even if we lose. Imagine the sort of crap that’ll be airing against her on MSNBC come mid-October. I haven’t cut a check for a candidate since 2004, but I’m suddenly inspired. Here’s the link.
Update: One other thing. I don’t think Palin’s going to make the play for the center; I think she’s going to anchor the base, which is suddenly in love, so that Maverick can go be his old mavericky self with independents. Short of reversing himself on abortion, there’s not much he could do at this point to make conservatives stay home.

Team McCain must fight this narrative by actually showing the people what Obama’s actual experience is. It isn’t reaching across the aisle… it isn’t getting things done… show the way he masks his votes… the guy masks everything as to create confussion about his past so McCain needs to start taking him apart bit by bit… This Palin pick is an opportunity to dig into Obama’s background.

Palin, like Romney, is GENUINE. The reason why Barry and the wonder-boy-from Scranton have gotten as far as they have is only because the press carried them every step of the way.
McCain, also, is genuine. It’s time for some real people to lead reform, and for the first time in years I have hope for our future. Real hope, like shining city on a hill hope!

Backstage at MSNBC…
Matthews: McCain picked a WOMAN? He can’t do that. The Democrats are the party of progress!
After a staffer hears this he whispers in Matthews ear.
Matthews: What? The President appointed two African-Americans and an Hispanic to his cabinet? I think I might faint.

What an unreasonable response to a reasonable post.
Now, to the post. I share some of the same worries, but this post by Jack Fowler at NRO was encouraging. It reminded me that Palin, despite the appearance of inexperience, has been at this game awhile and has taken out some opponents who underestimated her.
And, as you note and Fowler notes, she’s simply likable. That will count for quite a bit.

Here’s the deal, she speaks like 95% of the country and it’s refreshing to hear someone, who is not afraid to call herself a momma, because that’s what she is! Unlike Hilary who wouldn’t have recognized Chelsea on a Milk Carton. I don’t see where this is a negative!
flytier on August 29, 2008 at 3:44 PM
This is why Palin is such a good pick. It blunts the attack angle. They cant talk about her experience, They cant trash her small town background, they cant attack her for being a woman.
She can play offense while the dems have to play defense.
BTW I just got back from Watching her at the Nutter Center in Dayton. Was an electrifying experience believe me. I knew she was the VP but many didnt and they got wild when they heard it was her.

She is the perfect antidote against Obama. Everything they throw at her will stick to him, leaving McCain looking presidential.
The feminists are comparing her to Hillary. What is Hillary’s experience? Yammering away in the senate and her combat experience at Tusla receiving flowers from a little girl. They are being exposed as nothing but pro-abortionist, which immediately leads to Obama the Impaler himself.
pedestrian on August 29, 2008 at 3:45 PM
Really? What, demonstrably, is evidence of said “intelligence”? Where has his intelligence actually been manifested. Is this “quick study” the same that claims that an issue, as defining as abortion, which has been a part of public discourse for decades-certainly enough time for a quick study to hammer out the finer points-is above his pay grade? I’m sorry but I take no comfort in Obama’s “intelligence” nor the conclusions that that great intelligence would yield.
Weight of Glory on August 29, 2008 at 3:45 PM
Ok, here is my unsolicited advice. What AP has said is correct. Only answer to that is for McCain campaign to go aggressive with misogyny angle, this can counter the dumb narrative that Obama campaign will try to draw. In fact it will a plus to contrast Palin with Obama. That will take sheen off hopenchange.
Gaurav on August 29, 2008 at 3:45 PM
I think your pessimism is misplaced. Let’s tick off the points:
- She brings excitement to the McCain campaign, as well negating Obama’s glamour advantage.
- She’s a real conservative with Libertarian tendencies
- The evangelicals are fine with her
- Crossover advantage from the Hillaryites and assorted other identity-politics types.
But mainly, she appears to be a smart, very tough woman, relaxed and confident in a way that Hillary tried for and never achieved. Maybe I’m a bit giddy about this, after my expectations for the VP pick were so low, but to me, she radiates “I’m going to be impressive.”
What amazes me is that McCain picked an exciting real conservative, when I thought there were none in the running.

I’m not all that worried. She came from PTA, to city council, to mayor, to governor … from a normal, middle class background. Her husband is blue collar. If they attack too hard they risk losing all blue collar middle class support.
Not to mention all those other PTA moms who are honest enough to admit that we aren’t always perfect every time we open our mouths.

Lay of Allah. He calls them like he sees them.
Here is part of the difference between Reps and Dems:
Reps don’t trust ANY politician but give credit to those who come through once elected (Newt, Ronald Regan, John Kasich)
Dems actually drink the kool-aid and think that if you talk a good game and look good (and are a Dem) then you will be the best thing ever.
I haven’t been this excited since the House went Republican in 1994. I don’t know what Mrs.Palin will do, but she sure has proven that when she is put in a job, she goes after than job full bore without looking ahead to the next position. I am slightly optimistic for the first time in a VERY long time.

Question on the experience issue: Would Palin have even been considered for the veep if she had a penis? Seems blatantly opportunistic to me. Maverick seems to be simply going after the Hillary voters. He can’t win the ‘change’ argument and he’s losing ground on the national security front. I’m just saying…

He’s an affirmative action candidate all the way. In March, Walter Williams wrote that blacks need a Jackie Robinson-type candidate to break the Oval Office colorline and that Obama falls far short. Blacks deserve better, and I feel bad that they are settling for this dope. More important, Americans deserve better, and that’s why I’ll be ecstatic to vote McCain-Palin.

I might be pessimistic, but I think the McCain camp has been pretty stellar so far.
I have to believe they have know a lot more about Palin than we do, and they like what they saw.
When you look at the shortlist, every other candidate except Pawlenty had a lot more negatives (perceived or real).
Pawlenty would not have energized the base as much as this pick.

I always thought this would be a good pick, but I held my breath this morning until I saw how she did in Dayton. My fears are gone. She smacked it out of the park. No sign of nervousness. No sign of jitters. She’s a confident, capable campaigner, something that is news to us in the Lower 48 but was proved by her masterful work with the crowd after her speech. This is a first-stringer in every sense of the word. I’m pumped, and a bit exasperated by the “but what if it doesn’t work out?” punditry. As for experience, all she and McCain have to do is mention Tim Kaine, who has the same experience, but whose possible VP nod prior to the Biden pick was never questioned.

Coworker: “Did you hear about McCain’s VP pick? Can you believe he picked someone with NO experience? And she left her Downs Syndrome child after 3 Days to go back to work!”
Me: “She has more executive experience than your boy Obama and Biden combined. And she has 5 kids, I’m pretty sure she knows if it’s ok to go back to work. If it was Hillary with that story, you’d be raving about what a strong woman she is”
Coworker: “But McCain is so old. If he dies she’ll have to be president.”
Me: At least we have the chance he might not. Barry would be president on day 1, and that would give me a heart attack. You don’t want that, do you?”
Cue the crickets…

I admit I was worried thought she might not be up to speaking before such a large crowd for such an important position.
She came across as a giant not tiny at all.
She does need to be patient however she tried to rush her speech a little. She till get better over time.

Without a doubt the progressives will attack on all fours. It could also backfire if the perception of the attacks are so mean spirited and vicious to the point of putting bad taste in the mouths of the average voter. And I don’t mean the pity vote.
I believe most women will not have the contempt charge for McCain. Palin’s comment on just what a veep does could very well be a feather in the cap and a thorn in the side depending on how she handles the attacks from the MSM, progressives and the hard left.
In other words, I believe most women are a better judge of character than you give them credit for AP.

Sarah is a Republican, she already knows what it is to be demonized, and we know that the media doesn’t need a mistake to attack and seek to create negative memes. Any one can make mistakes, the Dems will condemn themselves if they go overboard hyping little stuff, and I think she’s pretty smart on the big stuff and is currently undergoing the most intense briefings imaginable.
Quayle got nailed with either a stupid trick or a stupid teacher or both, but in the Pre-Allah & Ed & MM age; now, stupid memes WILL be fabricated, and we WILL destroy them.

Palin connects with middle america the silennt majority of Reagan. the gun owners, the hunters, the pro-life crowd, the people from West Virgina, Ohio, small town PA, Minnosoat, Michgian. Of couse if you are trying to win New Yourk she would be the wrong pick but if you want Iowa than Palin’s you best shot. I saw her on CNBC and she handled herself like a pro.
She will do well and she will shake the Washington machine to its roots. It’s Mrs SMith goes to Washington.

I say it was the right choice. Might be risky, but all this excitement, well worth it.

Bah, you’re way too pessimistic. Attempting to paint her as an idiot will backfire if they attempt to do that and for every gaffe of Palin’s there will twice as many gaffes from Obama. Again, I think some of the brilliance in picking Palin is that if they attack her on her inexperience then it opens Obama up for devastating attack on the issue. That goes double for any gaffes she might make.

I don’t know AP, I find it a little annoying that we must grade anyone for higher office with academic intelligence aka Ivy League degree. There are plenty of smart people out there that didn’t go to any Ivy League or Ivy League types of schools and have done quite well for themselves. Let’s leave that educational elitism to the Democrats okay.
