Breaking: Pawlenty — “I’m not going to Ohio”; Update: Palin’s spokesman says she’s in Alaska; Update: Or is she? Update: It’s Palin, says CNBC; Update: Chicago Tribune says Palin too; Update: Team McCain makes it official!

Tim Pawlenty told local television/radio station WCCO that he will not be traveling to Ohio today.  Instead of being introduced as John McCain’s running mate, the Minnesota governor will attend the state fair as previously scheduled, and do his normal radio show from the fairgrounds:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty told WCCO Radio Friday morning that he was not going to Ohio today.

The governor told WCCO Radio’s Eric Eskola that he will be at the Minnesota State Fair Friday, doing his radio show.

“You’re not going to be there so we can just say point-blank, you’re not the nominee?” Eskola asked Pawlenty.

“All I can say is that I’m not going to be there and I plan on being at the State Fair and so you can draw your conclusions from that,” Pawlenty said. “I just can’t comment further at this time.

Meanwhile, several e-mailers pointed to a flight plan for a private jet from Alaska to Ohio last night.  Was Sarah Palin on her way to appear with McCain?  (via Marc Ambinder)

Update (AP): Oh my. This’ll be quite a letdown if true. Little white lie to keep the secret going?

As vice presidential speculation swirls, Gov. Sarah Palin is watching the fireworks from her home in Wasilla, Alaska…

The Governor’s spokesperson, Sharon Leighow, tells ABC News she’s going to the State Fair in Anchorage, Alaska.

Update (Ed): What, is everyone going to a state fair today?  I’ll be at the same one Pawlenty’s at tonight … maybe I’m the running mate?

Update (AP): Via the boss, hmmmmmm:

According to Rich Bevis of B&B Aero, the fixed-based operator at Hook Field, the jet, a Gulfstream IV which has the flight range to fly from Alaska to Europe, landed at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.

Bevis said the woman “was a real close match to Palin” and added that the flight crew that’s based in the Seattle area was told to fly to Anchorage to pick up their party and fly to Middletown.

Imagine if it’s Rob Portman. Good lord.

Update (AP): No Joementum, says Politico. We’re rapidly running out of contenders here. We’ve got the Ohio boys, Portman and Kasich, and … who else is left? Hutchison was pretty emphatic about not being vetted. Meg Whitman or Fiorina?

I think it’s Palin. That spokesman’s quote is awfully weak.

Update (AP): Here’s a much more solid reason to think it’s not Palin. Would they be sniffing at her to reporters if she was the pick?

Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska? As reports circulated on television and cable networks on Friday morning that Senator John McCain might have selected Ms. Palin as his running mate, McCain advisers expressed bewilderment. One adviser said that while Mr. McCain thinks highly of Ms. Palin, who is opposed to abortion rights and would be welcomed by Christian conservatives, her less than two years in office would undercut one of the McCain campaign’s central criticisms of Senator Barack Obama — that he is too inexperienced to be commander-in-chief.

“While it’s a dramatic and interesting choice, it would make the argument he’s making difficult to make,” said one McCain adviser.

Update (AP): CNBC says it’s her. Why would they be the first to know? Because she has a good reputation with the network by dint of her frequent appearances on Larry Kudlow’s show. Wow.

Update (AP): Rob Schenck, president of the National Clergy Council, is also hearing from sources that she’s the pick. What an unbelievable head fake by McCain, perfectly executed to build suspense and knock The One off the front page this morning. Mind-blowing.

Update (AP): The Chicago Tribune becomes the first major paper to “confirm.” I’m woozy.

Update (Ed): Just got the announcement from Team McCain — it’s officially Palin:

U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president.

Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.

Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us – Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.

In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the “bridge to nowhere” that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

As the head of Alaska’s National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.

Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

Feel like I am walking on air. How long before my feet hit the ground again? All I can say is wow! Seems like conservatives have their new leader…and her name is Sarah Palin. Get ready libs because here we come.

The smartest thing Camp Maverick can do is sit back and let Camp Barry O’ spout off for the next 24 hours.

That’s why the McCain camp doesn’t have any ad writers….they don’t need any!

I think the entire Internet has blown a gasket today.

hmmm, it all started about noon today.

To paraphrase Michelle Obama’s horrible statement:

For my first time in the life of this presidential cycle, I am proud to be voting for John McCain.

He could not have made a better pick. This is awesome news!

flutejpl on August 29, 2008 at 1:26 PM

The greatest thing about this: the MSM will now spend the next two months trying to diminish Palin rather than their 24/7 build-up of Obama.
And how are they going to look bashing a great woman with character?

Fact: Alaska does not have the death penalty. Instead, murderers are offered the choice between life imprisonment or being given a one hour head start before Palin is allowed to hunt them down. So far, all have chosen life in prison.

Hollowpoint on August 29, 2008 at 1:28 PM

It really doesn’t matter whether she was the best choice or not. Everyone agrees that the VP choice is supposed to provide a bounce. Biden provided zero…

I predict (based on no data and slight buzzed by too much coffee over-commenting on this thread) a 4-6 point bounce BEFORE the convention next week!

I still have my reservations about Gov. Palin on the expirience front, but better to have your least experienced candidate in the 2 hole rather than heading it and she’s got conservative cred, a great story, excellent character, I think she’s a woman that most other women can relate to, and she looks like a sexy librarian so there’s a bonus right there.

I’m sold.

Now, let’s start working on a strategy to make gains in congress…

SuperCool on August 29, 2008 at 1:39 PM

This pick has soooo many positives; another aspect- Palin plays right into Bidens biggest weakness- his big-mouthed arrogant insults, which will now be directed towards a intelligent woman during their debate.

This Palin-is-Tough humor is awesome. We need to plagiarize some of the Chuck Norris gags. I’ll get it started:

Sarah Palin doesn’t churn butter. She roundhouse kicks the cows and the butter comes straight out.

Sarah Palin is the only human being to display the Heisenberg uncertainty principle — you can never know both exactly where and how quickly she will roundhouse-kick you in the face.

OK maybe this won’t work. But some of those Chuck Norris lines are hilarious.

Godspeed Gov Palin!

‘Just finished listening to about 30 agonizing minutes of CNN to see what the Dem’s talking points are going to be. One hysterically funny talking point that they seem to be floating is the implication that Palin is not smart enough because she only has a journalism degree from the University of Idaho.

I have a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. It’s a great school, but I have been ashamed of the U of C for their transparently political appointment of Michelle Obama to a cushy, over-paid job. If I were them, I would not throw stones at Palin over where she received her friggin’ degree. Academic credentials do not determine leadership ability. I’ve worked in academic circles my whole life. As in most segments of society, there are many more followers than leaders.

The liberals are not listening to anyone but their own little circle. They think they can buy votes from struggling middle-class and poor people through entitlement programs, but they seem unable to listen to or understand them. I think that hard-working Americans will find they have more in common with Sarah and Todd Palin’s life story of hard work and difficult choices than with Barack and Michelle Obama’s one of privilege and pandering.

Oh, and I don’t think they’ll care how high Biden’s IQ is.

Yes, I thought her speech was terrific.

I was also really pleased to watch McCain’s announcement. His delivery was much better than usual (very good, I thought) – he was relaxed and, dare I say?, ebullient! There’s no doubt this was his pick, not a pick by committee (which is how Obama’s pick of Biden struck me). I think he received and listened to good advice, but in the end I think the determining factor was that he truly feels a personal connection to Palin.

I said something similar a day or two ago. But I’ll repeat it. Sure, it’s hokey, but this stuff works. Fall is coming, and in the Midwest that means football.

McCain and Palin need to make it to home games at Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and for good measure Notre Dame. I’m sure Buckeye fans would go crazy having the two of them “dot” the “i” in the script Ohio. The Midwest in a landslide.

The best Obama could do is throw out a pitch at a Cubs or White Sox game, and I bet he’d drill it in the dirt 10 feet in front of the plate.

BuckeyeSam on August 29, 2008 at 2:44 PM

The Dems will cut their own throats before this is over, mark my words. As long as Sarah can hold her own and avoid any big gaffes, the Left will take care of the rest.

Fact: Sarah Palin will end illegal immigration by taking off her designer eyeglasses and coldly staring across the border.

I wonder if this will get Palin the
“Worst Person of the World”?

It occurs to me that the Vice-Presidency is about to undergo a significant improvement in marksmanship.

Ooooo – a showdown between the douche and Gov. Palin? All she’d have to do is give him a look and his manhood would go hide in a lockbox.
