Breaking: Pawlenty — “I’m not going to Ohio”; Update: Palin’s spokesman says she’s in Alaska; Update: Or is she? Update: It’s Palin, says CNBC; Update: Chicago Tribune says Palin too; Update: Team McCain makes it official!

posted at 8:14 am on August 29, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Tim Pawlenty told local television/radio station WCCO that he will not be traveling to Ohio today.  Instead of being introduced as John McCain’s running mate, the Minnesota governor will attend the state fair as previously scheduled, and do his normal radio show from the fairgrounds:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty told WCCO Radio Friday morning that he was not going to Ohio today.

The governor told WCCO Radio’s Eric Eskola that he will be at the Minnesota State Fair Friday, doing his radio show.

“You’re not going to be there so we can just say point-blank, you’re not the nominee?” Eskola asked Pawlenty.

“All I can say is that I’m not going to be there and I plan on being at the State Fair and so you can draw your conclusions from that,” Pawlenty said. “I just can’t comment further at this time.

Meanwhile, several e-mailers pointed to a flight plan for a private jet from Alaska to Ohio last night.  Was Sarah Palin on her way to appear with McCain?  (via Marc Ambinder)

Update (AP): Oh my. This’ll be quite a letdown if true. Little white lie to keep the secret going?

As vice presidential speculation swirls, Gov. Sarah Palin is watching the fireworks from her home in Wasilla, Alaska…

The Governor’s spokesperson, Sharon Leighow, tells ABC News she’s going to the State Fair in Anchorage, Alaska.

Update (Ed): What, is everyone going to a state fair today?  I’ll be at the same one Pawlenty’s at tonight … maybe I’m the running mate?

Update (AP): Via the boss, hmmmmmm:

According to Rich Bevis of B&B Aero, the fixed-based operator at Hook Field, the jet, a Gulfstream IV which has the flight range to fly from Alaska to Europe, landed at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.

Bevis said the woman “was a real close match to Palin” and added that the flight crew that’s based in the Seattle area was told to fly to Anchorage to pick up their party and fly to Middletown.

Imagine if it’s Rob Portman. Good lord.

Update (AP): No Joementum, says Politico. We’re rapidly running out of contenders here. We’ve got the Ohio boys, Portman and Kasich, and … who else is left? Hutchison was pretty emphatic about not being vetted. Meg Whitman or Fiorina?

I think it’s Palin. That spokesman’s quote is awfully weak.

Update (AP): Here’s a much more solid reason to think it’s not Palin. Would they be sniffing at her to reporters if she was the pick?

Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska? As reports circulated on television and cable networks on Friday morning that Senator John McCain might have selected Ms. Palin as his running mate, McCain advisers expressed bewilderment. One adviser said that while Mr. McCain thinks highly of Ms. Palin, who is opposed to abortion rights and would be welcomed by Christian conservatives, her less than two years in office would undercut one of the McCain campaign’s central criticisms of Senator Barack Obama — that he is too inexperienced to be commander-in-chief.

“While it’s a dramatic and interesting choice, it would make the argument he’s making difficult to make,” said one McCain adviser.

Update (AP): CNBC says it’s her. Why would they be the first to know? Because she has a good reputation with the network by dint of her frequent appearances on Larry Kudlow’s show. Wow.

Update (AP): Rob Schenck, president of the National Clergy Council, is also hearing from sources that she’s the pick. What an unbelievable head fake by McCain, perfectly executed to build suspense and knock The One off the front page this morning. Mind-blowing.

Update (AP): The Chicago Tribune becomes the first major paper to “confirm.” I’m woozy.

Update (Ed): Just got the announcement from Team McCain — it’s officially Palin:

U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president.

Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.

Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us – Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.

In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the “bridge to nowhere” that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

As the head of Alaska’s National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.

Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

Typhonsentra on August 29, 2008 at 12:49 PM

Obviously, your bias is showing. VP is not a position you just fill because you lack certain things. If that were so, McCain would have picked Romney for Economic reasons. Obama has nothing in the way of a record with results, unless you care to discuss the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. Unless you want to discuss his mentor and communist friend Frank Davis. Unless you want to discuss his roots in ACORN.

Obama is Change We Can Run From. McCain is a reformer who will at least, be true to his principles and I will disagree with him on many things, but eliminating waste and over spending by Obama won’t be one of them.

Wow, I was figuring Mitt would be the choice, but she seems like a winner. (My main objection is that I think Alaska needs her to clean up the Republican party up there).

And the attacks from the media, so swift and fierce. Remember how Hillary’s supporters were upset about the way the media criticized her, and now the media is going after another women, accusing her of being “not experienced enough”!

How many professional women have heard that exact phrase when turned down for promotion?

And for Obama to make that argument? Geez, this is really like a bad work place soap opera:

The experienced woman (Hillary) gets shoved aside by the young hotshot charming man (Obama), and now he’s going to try to do the exact same thing to another younger up and coming woman, (Palin).

And McCain doesn’t even have to do anything.

The bottom line is that whether or not this is a great pick is up to Sarah Palin. If she proves to be a great candidate on the stump, then this will be a great pick and all the complaints about her experience will fade. On the other hand, if she suffers from gaffes and is hestitant on the stump, then the criticisms will gain weight.

From what I saw of her speech a few minutes ago, I think this will prove to be a great pick.

Well, Hillary does have more in some respects, if you break the experience into categories. Overall, though Palin does have experience to rival Hillary’s.

The laugh out loud point, which should be made is: Hillary isn’t running.

Palin has experience that overwhelms Barack Obama’s, not just on the executive level and in day to day decision-making on policy, but even in the simplist things like voting other than “present” on legislation, working across the aisle, speaking more than euphemistically on issues, and most likely on attendance in the jobs she gets paid to perform.

LOL, did you know Sarah Palin is running for George Bush’s third term?

El_Terrible on August 29, 2008 at 1:19 PM

If John McCain is Geroge W. Bush is Sarah Palin Dick Cheney? LMAO

People of the world:

The chanting at a Democratic rally:
O BA MA O BA MA O BA MA

The chanting at a Republican rally:
U S A U S A U S A
Need I say more?

Post of the year.

Yes yes yes!

RushBaby on August 29, 2008 at 1:21 PM

Wasn’t this announcement supposed to come tomorrow? Must be a bummer for MSNBC…probably has plans to re-broadcast Obama’s speech in prime time.

Waterboy on August 29, 2008 at 1:21 PM

Step in it again, Obama. Small town and no experience.

eaglesdontflock on August 29, 2008 at 1:21 PM

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN SARAH PALIN BECAME VP?!

As a right-leaning Independent “maverick” voter who has always questioned the decision-making prowess of the “maverick” nominee — I may now have to change my voter registration ….

The beautiful irony here, is that contrary to conventional wisdom, Barry’s Nuremberg speech last night has been completely overshadowed by Palin.

And mark my words; THIS historical event will be the defining moment of this election.

FiveWays on August 29, 2008 at 1:22 PM

I understand Palin has made her first speech as VP candidate – anybody seen in online?

peski on August 29, 2008 at 1:22 PM

[Waterboy on August 29, 2008 at 1:17 PM]

Absolutely. She was so articulate:

– knew what she wanted to say,
– didn’t have to search for it,
– didn’t hem and haw,
– straight to the point,
– did it from memory.

It’s likely she’ll crush Biden in debates in every way.

Dusty on August 29, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Incredible pick! I take back almost everything I’ve said about McCain. Almost …

Finally! Finally! A conservative on the ticket! And, she has much better hair than Biden …

WuzDem on August 29, 2008 at 1:24 PM

Its so sad for the libtards. They were so hoping for Romney. They had a whole bunch of anti-mormon insults they haven’t even used yet.

Speedwagon82 on August 29, 2008 at 1:24 PM

And mark my words; THIS historical event will be the defining moment of this election.

Well, no. It will be one of the Mac-Barack debates. Poor Obama must have the first one marked on his calender like a kid dreading the first day back to school.

Waterboy on August 29, 2008 at 1:24 PM

The smartest thing Camp Maverick can do is sit back and let Camp Barry O’ spout off for the next 24 hours.

The amount of political gold to be mined from their incompetent statements will create it’s own McCain bounce.

FiveWays on August 29, 2008 at 1:24 PM

Not only is Palin a fantastic choice, she’s proven to be a better leader than Barry ever has. The dems, of course, will bring up her experience, which only opens that door and forces Barry to tell America about his experience. I love it!

Conservative_SAHM on August 29, 2008 at 1:25 PM

There was a post in another thread here today wherein the poster said he/she had just giving the McCain campaign a contribution (and never had contributed to a campaign before).

I just did the same – and had never done so before. I wonder what the contribution stream looks like for the campaign.

I am absolutely STOKED, people! This is a great day for our country!
