Breaking: Pawlenty — “I’m not going to Ohio”; Update: Palin’s spokesman says she’s in Alaska; Update: Or is she? Update: It’s Palin, says CNBC; Update: Chicago Tribune says Palin too; Update: Team McCain makes it official!

Tim Pawlenty told local television/radio station WCCO that he will not be traveling to Ohio today.  Instead of being introduced as John McCain’s running mate, the Minnesota governor will attend the state fair as previously scheduled, and do his normal radio show from the fairgrounds:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty told WCCO Radio Friday morning that he was not going to Ohio today.

The governor told WCCO Radio’s Eric Eskola that he will be at the Minnesota State Fair Friday, doing his radio show.

“You’re not going to be there so we can just say point-blank, you’re not the nominee?” Eskola asked Pawlenty.

“All I can say is that I’m not going to be there and I plan on being at the State Fair and so you can draw your conclusions from that,” Pawlenty said. “I just can’t comment further at this time.

Meanwhile, several e-mailers pointed to a flight plan for a private jet from Alaska to Ohio last night.  Was Sarah Palin on her way to appear with McCain?  (via Marc Ambinder)

Update (AP): Oh my. This’ll be quite a letdown if true. Little white lie to keep the secret going?

As vice presidential speculation swirls, Gov. Sarah Palin is watching the fireworks from her home in Wasilla, Alaska…

The Governor’s spokesperson, Sharon Leighow, tells ABC News she’s going to the State Fair in Anchorage, Alaska.

Update (Ed): What, is everyone going to a state fair today?  I’ll be at the same one Pawlenty’s at tonight … maybe I’m the running mate?

Update (AP): Via the boss, hmmmmmm:

According to Rich Bevis of B&B Aero, the fixed-based operator at Hook Field, the jet, a Gulfstream IV which has the flight range to fly from Alaska to Europe, landed at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.

Bevis said the woman “was a real close match to Palin” and added that the flight crew that’s based in the Seattle area was told to fly to Anchorage to pick up their party and fly to Middletown.

Imagine if it’s Rob Portman. Good lord.

Update (AP): No Joementum, says Politico. We’re rapidly running out of contenders here. We’ve got the Ohio boys, Portman and Kasich, and … who else is left? Hutchison was pretty emphatic about not being vetted. Meg Whitman or Fiorina?

I think it’s Palin. That spokesman’s quote is awfully weak.

Update (AP): Here’s a much more solid reason to think it’s not Palin. Would they be sniffing at her to reporters if she was the pick?

Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska? As reports circulated on television and cable networks on Friday morning that Senator John McCain might have selected Ms. Palin as his running mate, McCain advisers expressed bewilderment. One adviser said that while Mr. McCain thinks highly of Ms. Palin, who is opposed to abortion rights and would be welcomed by Christian conservatives, her less than two years in office would undercut one of the McCain campaign’s central criticisms of Senator Barack Obama — that he is too inexperienced to be commander-in-chief.

“While it’s a dramatic and interesting choice, it would make the argument he’s making difficult to make,” said one McCain adviser.

Update (AP): CNBC says it’s her. Why would they be the first to know? Because she has a good reputation with the network by dint of her frequent appearances on Larry Kudlow’s show. Wow.

Update (AP): Rob Schenck, president of the National Clergy Council, is also hearing from sources that she’s the pick. What an unbelievable head fake by McCain, perfectly executed to build suspense and knock The One off the front page this morning. Mind-blowing.

Update (AP): The Chicago Tribune becomes the first major paper to “confirm.” I’m woozy.

Update (Ed): Just got the announcement from Team McCain — it’s officially Palin:

U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president.

Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.

Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us – Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.

In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the “bridge to nowhere” that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

As the head of Alaska’s National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.

Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

Great pick, Senator John Sidney McCain III !!! This will probably double the fund-raising to the RNC overnight, and probably pick off double digits of the Hillary voters. Now Governor Palin needs to be sent to Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Colorado (a moose hunter would be rather popular out there!)

As for the other possible picks that were passed over, how about Romney for Treasury Secretary, Lieberman for Secretary of Defense, and Giuliani for Attorney General?

trailortrash on August 29, 2008 at 11:03 AM

Cute. Apparently, Team McCain is now NOT going to attack Obama on the best angle they had — inexperience.

All I say is good luck. There is a lot of time between now and the election. Hurricane’s a coming and the how that is handled will be critical to the Repubs regardless of McCain’s VP pick.

eanax on August 29, 2008 at 10:58 AM

That doesn’t fly because Palin is the bottom of the ticket, not the top. And second, she’s still far more qualified than Obama because she has actual executive experience. Also, whereas Obama has no legislative record, Palin has a fairly impressive track record (considering she was only in office about a year).

No one on any of the MSM has mentioned when talking about Palin vs. Biden and the foreign experience. That her state borders two countries. The only state that does that. Canada and Russia, and she has dealt with both of those border issues, and international territory issues. She understands national security, some of the most sophisticated military is in her state. She has more foreign experience then any one on the Dems side.
CNN and MSNBC are besides themselves because they admitted they know nothing about her…they should have been reading HotAir.

wise_man on August 29, 2008 at 11:05 AM

Don’t you think Palin helps with younger voters? I think she helps to undercut Obama’s so called “cool” factor.

After all, hanging out with Wright, Pfleger, and Ayers ain’t cool with at least most people.

BTW, SW Ohio has a zip code (45243), which is about the biggest RNC fund source in the country. I can hear the checkbooks opening now–or the wire-transfer lines buzzing.

BuckeyeSam on August 29, 2008 at 11:05 AM

I am delighted that Governor Palin appears to be McCain’s pick. I think she’ll bring an energy to the ticket that will put them over the top in November. She is a legitimate conservative, a reformer, and an expert on balancing energy needs with environmental issues. Great pick!

I’ve been flipping around the dial this morning to see the initial coverage by Fox, MSNBC, and CNN. Fox is using great, photos of Gov. Palin looking professional and effective… whereas the first picture I saw MSNBC use was on Joe Scarborough’s cell phone and appeared to be a 1984 glamour shot when she was a beauty pageant contestant. Predictable, but disgusting.

If I were the McCain campaign, I would freeze out MSNBC. No appearances by the inner circle and NO LEAKS (or no accurate leaks, anyway!).

Important appearances for Palin will be morning “news” programs, especially Good Morning America. That’s an important audience.

Also, although I’m not a big fan (at all) of this trend of putting candidates on entertainment shows, I would absolutely put her on Regis & Kelly.

Again, hoorah for the McCain-Palin ticket! I hope those who wanted others, will be able to support this ticket. Romney’s boosters should be particularly proud of how he conducted himself. He has sealed a great future in national Republican politics by being so classy and effective in supporting McCain.

No, but Biden can. Running mate to running mate…

eanax on August 29, 2008 at 11:06 AM

It’s a VP pick – not king of the world… experience level is not nearly as critical as it needs to be at the top of the ticket, so this worrying about Palin’s perceived lack of experience is silly. She’s got more executive experience than Obama.

I think it’s a daring and shrewd pick, just as Mondale’s picking of Ferraro was way back when; I don’t think Mondale tanked because of Geraldine Ferraro (in my mind, she had more leadership ability than he).

I don’t know a lot about Sarah Palin, but will certainly read up on her (and we’ll be barraged with info over the next few weeks for sure), but what I hear about her so far is very good — adamantly pro-life, fiscal conservative… bring it on!

Asher on August 29, 2008 at 11:01 AM

Quite right on that, Asher.

We’ve already seen that blacks are perfectly comfortable with vitriolic, racist, personal attacks against other blacks who are conservative.

But I suspect that women will not appreciate Sarah Palin, mother of five and governor of Alaska, being personally attacked because she is a woman. Not one bit.

Blacks = 11 – 13% of the electorate.
Women = 51% of the electorate.

I’ll take those odds.

Obama is going to be hammered on born alive. Hammered, I say. Palin can have her children on stage and point out that Obama would have had at least one of them destroyed before birth.

This rescues McCain from the ANWR wilderness.

And the Hillary Heartbreak Club now has a new place to huddle.

Oh, what a GOP convention it will be!

Disturb the Universe on August 29, 2008 at 11:01 AM

I’m quite certain there are donors who would love to contribute to funding that story.

I would buy that.

Just imagine there being a little sample piece in a National Review journal…

The MSM talking heads’ surprised reactions to this nomination of Palin shows how out of touch they are with the Republican base. It’s clear they don’t read conservative websites (except maybe NRO, and it is out of touch with the Republican base).

Dem bigdogs have always been afraid of Palin. She is their worst nightmare (thus the phony investigation).

She’s principled. If you have convictions, it shows. Sometimes, that makes up for certain types of experience.

texette on August 29, 2008 at 11:11 AM

I just can’t get as excited about it as most of you seem to be. I think the Democrats will push the trooper firing “scandal” hard…with the help of the MSM. It has started, already.

Personally, way better than most of the other rumored choices.

How? She’s not the presidential pick, she’s the VP. Obama is still dangerously inexperienced compared to McCain, his counter-part. No one’s going to suddenly doubt McCain’s more experienced that Obama. And it’s not like Team Obama can bring it up.

amerpundit on August 29, 2008 at 11:11 AM

Dude. She plays hockey. She was a sports reporter. She wields machine guns when visiting Iraq. She probably has killed many a moose and elk and caribou (well, it’s possible). To quote Rove, “A gun toting, hockey playing, woman.” Cool is correct. AND with strong Christian Conservative credentials. Awesome!

Ordinary1 on August 29, 2008 at 11:10 AM

And her nickname on the basketball team was “barracuda”, that’s the kind of politician we need.
He husband is and has been a commercial fisherman…not some lobbyist or “consultant”.

WOW!

When I loaded the front page, it was at 1237!

Yes, I will vote for McCain/Palin–happily.

I’m a little concerned because she is just so beautiful. I’ll have to resist the temptation to dismiss a girl intellectually just because she’s stunningly gorgeous.

Isn’t her son deploying to Iraq next month?

I wish St. Olaf would enlighten us as to how Huck is going to be VP at this point.

You know, it’s not that Senator Obama doesn’t care about women, it’s just that HE DOESN’T GET IT !

I does my little heart so good to see so many finally enthusiastically rally behind the Mav.

If Palin is what it took, then Palin it is.

McCain/Palin 08!

How long ’til the bumper stickers are available?

Palin FTW. I’m over the moon.

Can we have Fred on the SCOTUS, too?

pilamaye on August 29, 2008 at 11:12 AM

Okay, since Romney is relegated to the shadows… to be expected… not welcome but same old same old.

This is what he needs to do.

FUND THIS POOR WOMAN ABOUT 4 NANNIES! Those kid’s lives are going to be totally upended. At least their physical needs should be taken care of and you could help there!

Did that sound like complaining? I’ll get over it give me time.

And please, Palin, be competent at least.

To have a no name, not done much, over someone who is completely prepared and experienced is tough but I can see the political sense of it.

So Palin. Sell me.

As for the experience level… well if McCain stays alive for two years Palin will be more experienced than Obama is now. So… it works.

petunia on August 29, 2008 at 11:12 AM

When Obama found himself within the corrupt political cesspool that is Chicago politics, what did he do? He supported Todd Stroger’s ascension to his father’s position. Oh yeah, where is the Hope and Change there?

What did Palin do? She took political corruption head on in Alaska and now their legislature is going after her for it.

Finally, where do Dems get off citing that McCain / Palin as having a deficit in economic experience? Where the hell did Obama learn about economics? In law school? As a “community activist?” Joe Biden is a Washington re-tread who couldn’t get elected as Pres numerous times. At least Palin has executive experience.

furytrader on August 29, 2008 at 11:12 AM

I’m not euphoric about it. I’m concerned about her resume’ – her lack of foreign policy experience, her lack of business experience, her past support of windfall profit taxes, and I worry about her going head to head with Joe Biden in debates. Hopefully she will remove these doubts as she goes out and campaigns with McCain.

I think Mitt comes to the job much better prepared, but he’s a boring white guy with too many houses, and that’s what really matters when you’re the leader of the free world.

so and so: Governor Palin how can you call yourself qualified you are only 44 and have little exoerience?

Palin…well I could have three more years on me and have been a “community organizer” but instead I was out raising my kids and RUNNING my community.

sven10077 on August 29, 2008 at 11:13 AM

Well, McCain just won my vote. Good pick.

Rove: “Today it’s a thumbs up, in the next five days it’s a big thumbs up. It will give the Republican convention a certain excitement it didn’t have before.”

amerpundit on August 29, 2008 at 11:13 AM

Finally, McCain takes a chance, picks a true Conservative that will represent a new generation of Republicans. A fresh face, tons of energy and the one pick that is a huge risk but can provide unmatched rewards.

McCain could have picked Jesus Christ and the democrats would say, “He once used a whip on people and hung out with a prostitute”.

It comes with the territory. Go with it and be happy.
