Breaking: Pawlenty — “I’m not going to Ohio”; Update: Palin’s spokesman says she’s in Alaska; Update: Or is she? Update: It’s Palin, says CNBC; Update: Chicago Tribune says Palin too; Update: Team McCain makes it official!

Tim Pawlenty told local television/radio station WCCO that he will not be traveling to Ohio today.  Instead of being introduced as John McCain’s running mate, the Minnesota governor will attend the state fair as previously scheduled, and do his normal radio show from the fairgrounds:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty told WCCO Radio Friday morning that he was not going to Ohio today.

The governor told WCCO Radio’s Eric Eskola that he will be at the Minnesota State Fair Friday, doing his radio show.

“You’re not going to be there so we can just say point-blank, you’re not the nominee?” Eskola asked Pawlenty.

“All I can say is that I’m not going to be there and I plan on being at the State Fair and so you can draw your conclusions from that,” Pawlenty said. “I just can’t comment further at this time.

Meanwhile, several e-mailers pointed to a flight plan for a private jet from Alaska to Ohio last night.  Was Sarah Palin on her way to appear with McCain?  (via Marc Ambinder)

Update (AP): Oh my. This’ll be quite a letdown if true. Little white lie to keep the secret going?

As vice presidential speculation swirls, Gov. Sarah Palin is watching the fireworks from her home in Wasilla, Alaska…

The Governor’s spokesperson, Sharon Leighow, tells ABC News she’s going to the State Fair in Anchorage, Alaska.

Update (Ed): What, is everyone going to a state fair today?  I’ll be at the same one Pawlenty’s at tonight … maybe I’m the running mate?

Update (AP): Via the boss, hmmmmmm:

According to Rich Bevis of B&B Aero, the fixed-based operator at Hook Field, the jet, a Gulfstream IV which has the flight range to fly from Alaska to Europe, landed at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.

Bevis said the woman “was a real close match to Palin” and added that the flight crew that’s based in the Seattle area was told to fly to Anchorage to pick up their party and fly to Middletown.

Imagine if it’s Rob Portman. Good lord.

Update (AP): No Joementum, says Politico. We’re rapidly running out of contenders here. We’ve got the Ohio boys, Portman and Kasich, and … who else is left? Hutchison was pretty emphatic about not being vetted. Meg Whitman or Fiorina?

I think it’s Palin. That spokesman’s quote is awfully weak.

Update (AP): Here’s a much more solid reason to think it’s not Palin. Would they be sniffing at her to reporters if she was the pick?

Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska? As reports circulated on television and cable networks on Friday morning that Senator John McCain might have selected Ms. Palin as his running mate, McCain advisers expressed bewilderment. One adviser said that while Mr. McCain thinks highly of Ms. Palin, who is opposed to abortion rights and would be welcomed by Christian conservatives, her less than two years in office would undercut one of the McCain campaign’s central criticisms of Senator Barack Obama — that he is too inexperienced to be commander-in-chief.

“While it’s a dramatic and interesting choice, it would make the argument he’s making difficult to make,” said one McCain adviser.

Update (AP): CNBC says it’s her. Why would they be the first to know? Because she has a good reputation with the network by dint of her frequent appearances on Larry Kudlow’s show. Wow.

Update (AP): Rob Schenck, president of the National Clergy Council, is also hearing from sources that she’s the pick. What an unbelievable head fake by McCain, perfectly executed to build suspense and knock The One off the front page this morning. Mind-blowing.

Update (AP): The Chicago Tribune becomes the first major paper to “confirm.” I’m woozy.

Update (Ed): Just got the announcement from Team McCain — it’s officially Palin:

U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president.

Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.

Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us – Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.

In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the “bridge to nowhere” that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

As the head of Alaska’s National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.

Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

A great idea!! A little one on one. I’ll bet Sarah would kick Barack’s scrawny butt! LOL!

Seriously though, I think this is a great pick for many reasons, one of which is watching Biden totally look like a big Blue Meanie whose picking on a woman….and you know he will.

I love that republicans are the one’s elevating the constituencies that democrats pander to, blacks and women. It was Bush who put a black American into the highest office ever in Sec State. Twice.

It’s now a republican who gives a female the chance to be VP and potentially President above the democratic whining crowd.

It will also suck Obama’s momentum away and make the independants look at actions, not words.

Again, Alaska borders Canada by land and Russia by sea.

Biden’s “split up Iraq, except for Baghdad which we donn’t have a clue about” has been able to UNITE Iraq in HATRED of Biden (see the not-exactly-right-wing-Reuters story)

OBAMA says we should leave Iraq and invade Pakistan…. he faults bush for not invading a sovereign nation.

That has NUKES.

That has a strong Muslim Brotherhood/islamist element in its military.

I’ve read about five pages of posts and have yet to see anyone comment on Sarah’s political philosophy. Just a lot of fluff about her age, sex, and alleged lack of “experience”. I’ve read some of her speeches and interviews, as well as those of the other VP possibilities. I must say that she was the only one in that group who has said anything at all about the principles of liberty and limited government. We don’t need another big government knucklehead who has years of experience in destroying and dismantling our constitutional republic and advancing the welfare state. And her stance on our need for energy independence is her greatest strength during our current time of crisis. Palin would be a fine VP candidate. McCain could do much worse with any of his other possible choices, Washington political hacks all.

Poptech on August 29, 2008 at 10:11 AM

Your reaction is the danger of preference. Was Palin chosen just because she was a woman? It automatically instills doubt about her qualifications. I don’t know that she isn’t “the right man for the job” but when preference is assigned by category and not talent there will always be doubt that undermines their achievements.

Whether McCain has climbed aboard the identity politics express or not, he has still ran an amazing campaign against Obama. I have been impressed with him personally, but I will still be “writing in” George Washington this election.

Definitely. I’m not arguing with you. All I’m saying is we need to get good at convincing people that Sarah Palin is ready. That involves more than just arguing Obama is not ready. There are one description of Palin that we are going to hear ad nauseum from the media from today right up until election day. That description is young. We need to counter that in a very smart way. I don’t think it will work to counter it by saying Obama’s young too (translation: Obama’s inexperience is not a deal breaker because our #2 candidate is fresh and young as well.) The strategy must be to tout Palin’s experience and qualifications. It must be convincing.

How long before BHO calls her “sweetie”?

phronesis on August 29, 2008 at 10:58 AM

How long before she pops back “Don’t patronize me?”

LOL
So inexperience and popularity aren’t so bad after all.
A bold choice.

Governor of an energy state?

Popular for her demeanor and class, not because of a bunch of rock-star platitudinous bullshat.

LOL.

Way to go, John McCain!

On CNN, Don Lemon and Tony Harris are saying one of the things we are learning about is a state investigation involving Palin…they look desperate to come up with something to salvage Obama!

Listening to Fox New on Sirius (not getting any work done)…no one is talking about The One’s speech last night. It was sooo yesterday!
Absolutly brillant with holding this underwraps this long, making the media pant and cover this whole thing…and now the speech in an hour…absolutly brillant!
Go Sarah! My enthusiam just went up about 10 nothces!

Okay, well, I was completely surprised by both VP picks. They’re both exactly who I was hoping for!

And some throw in info. on energy by both presidential candidates:

Obama: Obama will rely heavily on solar power and wind which are currently very expensive generators of energy. The brand new Solar One plant southwest of Las Vegas produces energy at 240% times the current market price of energy. It is the most efficient solar power plant in the world. I guess Obama’s plan is to double our power bills.

Obama: In 2005, he voted to kill legislation that would have measured our offshore reserves. Now Obama is sponsoring S.115, which he calls the “Oil SENSE Act,” which would repeal the 2005 Energy Policy Act’s authorization of these inventories. In 1970, a mere 17% of offshore wells struck oil. By 1997 that figure was up to 48%. With even newer 4-D surveying techniques using satellites, about 70% of 4-D wells find oil. These new techniques allow us to find more oil more quickly with minimal environmental impact.Yet Barack Obama wants to ban their use forever.

McCain: “There are some instances that within a matter of months they could be getting additional oil,” GOP standard bearer John McCain told reporters after touring San Joaquin Facilities Management in Bakersfield, Calif., an oil firm.McCain acknowledged that some sites would take longer but said “there’s abundant resources in the view of the people who are in the business that could be exploited within a matter of months. So offshore drilling is something we have to do.” http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=303344360938478

CNN is absolutely incredible right now. Already talking about a legislative investigation in Alaska looking into a firing of a state official.

alflauren on August 29, 2008 at 11:00 AM

If it is Palin I now will be voting for the ticket instead of against Obama.

Juxapose her Down Syndrom baby (alive and loved) with the story about the Down Syndrom child who survived the partial birth abortion only to be left to die amongst the soiled linen, the one BO voted had no right to medical attention.

McCain just destroyed whatever coverage Obama was going to get for the next week. The timing and the selection couldn’t have been better.

I just hope Sarah is as tough as nails…the Dems aren’t going to try to defeat her, they are going to try to destroy her. The Left despises conservative women and minorities.

If she starts out looking as cute as Palin? I’ll take that chance. :D
