Matthews: Rice, Powell just “showcase appointments”

posted at 9:15 am on August 29, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

I guess Chris Matthews couldn’t bring himself to go the full Harry Belafonte and call Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell “house slaves”.  Instead, in his effusion over Barack Obama, Matthews throws away all journalistic objectivity and manages to also mangle the truth in demeaning Rice, Powell, and other high-ranking officials in the Bush administration as “showcase appointments”:

Again he [Barack Obama] carries with him the history of tonight. And it’s important to point out, as we have not so far, Barack Obama was not given this nomination, he won it. He was not offered a nice title like Secretary of State, like Condoleezza Rice got from the Republicans. He was not offered the title of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs as Colin Powell was, or Secretary of State. He won the nomination of a Democratic Party voting together. He defeated all other opponents and took the prize and took the leadership. He is the chosen leader of the Democratic Party.

He is not some popular appointment or a showcase appointment. He is the victor here tonight. That’s why he dictates the agenda. That’s why he says, personally, what the Democratic Party will do if he’s elected President. He is the leader of the party. He may be the leader of the country through a democratic process. It is so vital to understand the history being made here tonight. This is not something cute or wonderful. It is something compelling and powerful. This country has changed its history.

First, his description of Obama’s nomination is simply not true. Indeed, Obama was selected, and selected by the power structure of the Democratic Party.  Neither he nor Hillary Clinton won the nomination through the primary process; Obama had a pledged delegate lead, but nowhere near enough to win the prize.  He won because the superdelegates decided to back him instead of Hillary Clinton.  Hillary actually received more popular votes in the end than did Obama, who prevailed in caucuses.

The idea that the Democratic Party “voted together” is even more risible.  The party tore itself apart on the shoals of identity politics and opened perhaps a fatal weakness for the fall.  The entire convention was an exercise in damage control, a moderately successful exercise to be sure, but the idea that Obama came into Denver riding on a cloud of unity only exposes Matthews as the worst kind of brown-nosing hack.

For some reason, Matthews and NBC apparently feel they have to denigrate the service of Rice and Powell in order to inflate Obama.  Why?  Rice and Powell held positions of actual power, and acquitted themselves well in those roles.  It’s a conventiently circular argument to accuse Republicans of not wanting diversity, and then pointing to the diversity of the Bush administration as some kind of window dressing.

Matthews and Keith Olbermann have become the prime-time purveyors of hatred in American broadcast news.  NBC should fire them all and hire actual journalists who can refrain from swooning on camera.

And if McCain’s pick is Palin, it will be even better to see how the MSM and especially these two dolts belittle her accomplishments. I can just see the attacks on her for not staying home and taking care of her kids.

Media Matters wouldn’t even have to spin and insinuate this one…

Why won’t this outrage more people? Why aren’t MSNBC switchboards flooding with calls to call Matthews for racist comments?

Possibly becuase intelligent people realize O’Carter can’t hold a candle to the accomplishments and abilities of Powell or Rice, so Matthews’ comments just roll off them.

Excellent point about Barack Obama not earning the Democratic nomination but rather being given it be “Super-delegates”. It’s amazing that the party “of the people” has appointed delegate rather than all elected. Animal Farm was right.

TooTall on August 29, 2008 at 9:42 AM

Barack Obama was not given this nomination, he won it.

Did he? Wasn’t there some sort of concern that it was so close between them that there was worry that there would be an embarrassment if BO didn’t get the vote? I kind of remember Hillary making some sort of unity speech when she handed over her delegates and asked to suspend further voting. Sounds a lot more like selected rather than elected too me.

Matthews and Keith Olbermann have become the prime-time purveyors of hatred in American broadcast news.

The argument in favor of Olbermann is always that he brings in the viewers so NBC News and MSNBC have to dance to his tune.

But there are lots of cheap, sleazy ways to get ratings. They could have strippers read the teleprompter from the pole and they’d get ratings all right. How much brand equity/credibility, built up over more than 50 years, is NBC willing to sacrifice for a short-term ratings gain?

A lot it seems. Too much already.

I prefer “token negro,” myself, as long as we’re talking racist implications. Of course, with the incessant drumming about the Democrats nominating a black for president, and patting themselves on the back for being so progressive and diverse, it looks like Obama is the token negro here.

Honestly, would a junior senator even be considered for VP if he were white?

Tsk, tsk, Ed. You should know by now that it’s not how truthful the talking heads are — it’s the affect that they have on the ratings. There are lies and distortions that are just as bad coming from conservative commentators — but if they generate high ratings, nobody will fire them either.

It’s not rocket-science here gang. Higher ratings on a ‘news’ network = a long-term job for a liar.

A home run!

That’s it isn’t it? If BO was anything but African American he would not be where he is today. It’s all about him being a complete unknown and African American. The liberals couldn’t stomach any of the other African Americans that have run for the presidency but they think BO is safe because he is unknown. He is the perfect symbol of what guilty racist white liberals want their African Americans to be like and today they can all congratulate each other on how accepting and open they are to new ideas. They can now look in the mirror and see a wonderful human being that voted for an African American rather than the guilt ridden white racist they know they are.

Of course, if we apply Chrissy’s interpretations of how Powell and Rice got their jobs to him, then Chrissy was a “showcase” appointment too. It wasn’t by democratic choice. He was awarded that job he’s got. And he’s effing it up marvelously!

I think thats part of the problem with the two parties today… they Pres candidates CHANGE the platform instead of abiding by the platform…

The Platform used to be written by the Party… and was a common agreement of goals… now? dictated by the Presidential candidate and the rest of the party is just supposed to blindly follow ONE MAN???

Chris Matthews is truly an example of a pandering coward. He hides behind his aura of punditry, heaving lightning bolts of hate and enmity at any and all who do not think like he does. He bloviates like a true sycophant, hoping to garner favour from his masters, that he may continue to recieve the gruel three times a day. Crap weasels like this guy really hurt the field of journalism. The network for which he works is nothing more than a larger version of losers like Matthews and Olberdumb. Sooner or later these hatemongers find chickens at their doorstep looking for a place to roost.

Mark30339 on August 29, 2008 at 2:27 PM

Is it just me or does anyone else see the fallacy of Chrissy’s argument this way?

Condi Rice was a child raised in Alabama during the racial strife of Selma and went through forced intergration. her African-American parents fought an uphill battle to get their daughter the best education possible all while being poor and she ends up fighting her way to the top rungs of political life.

Powell’s parents also struggled through similar obstacles and Colin spent many grueling decades in service of his country to do the same.

…and Matthews disses all of this and calls them “showcase appointments”.

Obama was raised by middle class white grand-parents in a not so volitile time in istory for black people and has not been elected or appointed to ANYTHING by the Democrats. He’s just a CANDIDATE for now!

Goodeye_Closed on August 29, 2008 at 3:16 PM
