Heart-ache: Palin wants creationism taught in public schools? Update: Oh noes, Pat Buchanan!

If you read Wired? Yes. If you read LGF and get the full context of what she said? No. That makes twice already today that quotes of hers were bowdlerized to make them more nutroots-friendly.

Lot o’ debunking to do before November 4.

In an interview Thursday, Palin said she meant only to say that discussion of alternative views should be allowed to arise in Alaska classrooms:

“I don’t think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum.”

She added that, if elected, she would not push the state Board of Education to add such creation-based alternatives to the state’s required curriculum.

Members of the state school board, which sets minimum requirements, are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Legislature.

“I won’t have religion as a litmus test, or anybody’s personal opinion on evolution or creationism,” Palin said.

That puts her to Jindal’s left, actually. Here’s a bit more, unquoted by LGF, from the Anchorage Daily News article Charles links to:

Palin said she thought there was value in discussing alternatives.

“It’s OK to let kids know that there are theories out there,” she said in the interview. “They gain information just by being in a discussion.”

That was how she was brought up, she said. Her father was a public school science teacher.

“My dad did talk a lot about his theories of evolution,” she said. “He would show us fossils and say, ‘How old do you think these are?’”

I don’t know how to parse all that — she’s happy to let it come up in classroom discussion so long as it’s introduced by kids’ questions and not the teacher himself, I guess — but as long as she doesn’t want to add it to the curriculum I can’t believe she’ll have any problem with independents. In any case, creationism’s not what this election’s about. What this election’s about is whether Palin supported a guy nine years ago who’s still — tragically — so mainstream that you can’t turn on MSNBC or Fox News without stumbling across him. Ben Smith cites old press reports indicating that Palin backed Steve Forbes in 1999, but Buchanan, ever eager to slay the neocon dragon even if it means blaming Churchill for World War II, evidently claimed on Hardball tonight that she was one of his. I can’t wait for the “Countdown” segment explaining why anyone who would associate with Pat Buchanan is unfit for office, followed immediately by yet another 20-minute pundit roundtable featuring Pat Buchanan.

Update: A crucial news bulletin: Palin never actually donated to Buchanan but may have been at a fundraiser for him 12 years ago. Ergo, she hates Jews. I literally laughed aloud at the thought of Chris Matthews trying to paint her as a hatemonger with the hatemonger-in-chief sitting right across from him on his own show.

No heart-ache, this is excellent. It time to stop feeding our kids these absurd fairy-tales known as evolution.

You know, there used to be plenty of middle ground on this, not so long ago. It wasn’t always an either or situation.

LGF’s agnostic compulsion to stamp out any acknowledgment that creation may be the work of a higher being needs to stay there.
No need for this OCD at haught heir.

Q: Explain your position on teaching creationism in public schools.
A: I support a voucher system to allow parents to choose what schools their students should attend. They can make the choice between what (or both) positions they want their children to learn when it comes to evolution/creation.

Hmmm.

My Username indicates my background, and this is the first time I’ve been able to comment on this topic.

These topics usually wax far longer than needed. Science is SUPPOSED to be about free speech, and freedom of ideas. Those that squawk loudly against the inclusion of creationism in a classroom, I hate to say it, but are rather Marxist in their approach.

Creationism isn’t poison, our nation was raised on it.

Have any of you ever noticed the rabidness of Richard Dawkins. If you haven’t, watch him, he is a religious zealot. Rather eye opening.

Seeing as how Obama has gone to church for many, many years, married and baptised his daughters there, isn’t it possible that Obama believes in a God that created the universe as well?

Perhaps the libs should verify that their guy doesn’t believe in it either before they seek to nail Palin with the awfullness of believing such a thing.

congratulations_universe on August 29, 2008 at 9:03 PM

Seriously. The second line in that Wired story which made it so easy to miss I’m sure is,

In a 2006 gubernatorial debate, the soon-to-be governor of Alaska said of evolution and creation education, “Teach both. You know, don’t be afraid of education. Healthy debate is so important, and it’s so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both.”

I’m sure there was no deliberate attempt to mischaracterize her statement on the matter with their headline though.

Well that’s it. I don’t know how much more I can stand. First it’s “tell ya”, then a non-republican kid , a shadow government husband, a secret pregnancy and now this. I’m just not sure I can vote for a ticket that has such a person. It kind of makes one think that black racist preachers, killing live babies and unrepentant terrorists are not all that bad. malan89 on August 29, 2008 at 8:59 PM

Agree. The public schools are a total failure, if for no other reason than evolution is force upon kids in the name of preserving the “wall of separation” that never existed in the first place. Close the public schools and let the parents decide whats best for their kids.

Palin wants creationism taught in public schools?

Thank God.

Evolution is a completely separate line of thinking from creation and that fact needs to be taught. Evolution concerns how life adapts to an ever changing environment but in no way can answer where life came from or how. Unless you really believe 2 rocks looked at each other and said, “Hey baby. Let’s get it on”. And the 2 horny rocks had children that became all of the earths organic life..

That’s a very charitable interpretation – she’s not just talking about the kids bringing it up, she’s leaving room for teachers to do so.

Yes you are. There are many different aspects of creationism, including those who believe in an old universe (billions of years) and still a literal interpretation of Genesis. Not all creationists believe in a young earth, even if we do agree on the inspiration and authority of the Bible. (http://www.reasons.org/)

Public schools already spend more than that in urban areas with horrid results.

alphie on August 29, 2008 at 9:11 PM

Actually, Alphie, millions do just that, minus the cardboard box hyperbole. I know many families who have drastically downsized their lifestyles, sold homes, and took extra work, to be able to pull their kids out of public schools and place them in private. Many more, who can’t afford it still, then take the further responsibility of home schooling. This is what my wife and I do, and were are starting to save now so that we will be able to send them to private later on, but now we are home schooling. My oldest son will be 4 in one month, and he has already gone through a K5 curriculum, and is reading (he even knows the water cycle, and has memorized the present active indicative forms of Koine Greek). Smart little booger.

they did…the NEA went out of its way to help bankrupt locals in many states forcing the curriculum choices into an evershrinking and ever more partisan set of state officials.

Small town hick, looks like a porn star, married to an igloo-maker, I mean wtf already? Did you see the KOS thing where they are claiming her latest child isn’t even hers? I’m just sick of these liberal types and their nasty crap.

The quote from the caption bothers me more than anything: “I’m not going to pretend I know how all this came to be.”

Seriously? And she’s a Christian? Seriously?

lutherjw on August 29, 2008 at 9:22 PM

Don’t start with this. Even Huckabee and Dobson like her. The secularists like her too. That kind of helps to win elections. She was obviously just claiming agnosticism with regard to the exact mechanism God used, not denying the role of God.

Then you have donors that give funds to those who seek a better education through private schooling. The public school system is a racket and monopoly.

Unless Allah found it earlier, I’m going to shamelessly claim credit for discovering that photo. I was digging around in Yahoo! news photos earlier and busted out laughing when I saw it, and sent it along to AP, in hopes it would make an appearance in the way it did.

Thanks for spreading the joy with the community, Allah.

I support a voucher system to allow parents to choose what schools their students should attend. They can make the choice between what (or both) positions they want their children to learn when it comes to evolution/creation.

Here’s an idea: how about removing the federal government from the equation entirely and leaving this matter up to the states…you know…like the way it was set up in the Constitution?

ManlyRash on August 29, 2008 at 9:31 PM

Did someboday say “creationist”?

apacalyps on August 29, 2008 at 9:31 PM

Sarah Palin was educated in public school, sit.

Are you saying she isn’t educated enough fo the job she’s trying to win?

alphie on August 29, 2008 at 9:27 PM

why are you so down on public schools?

Education is a team effort between student, parents, and teachers…..

every minute my child’s teacher spends trying to inflict liberal morals on my child is a minute a foreign kid is getting more math and science…..

if he needs heather has 2 mommies…I’ll make that call…..

idea for a bumper sticker:

Shut up and teach!

sven10077 on August 29, 2008 at 9:32 PM

Biden’s view of public schools:

After a lengthy critique of Bush administration education policies, Biden attempted to explain why some schools perform better than others — in Iowa, for instance, compared with the District. “There’s less than 1 percent of the population of Iowa that is African American. There is probably less than 4 or 5 percent that are minorities. What is in Washington? So look, it goes back to what you start off with, what you’re dealing with,” Biden said. He went on to discuss the importance of parental involvement in reading to children and how “half this education gap exists before the kid steps foot in the classroom.”

No one can ever be sure they’ve got it 100% right, especially on essential questions like existence, that’s not an unreasonable statement from Palin.

I have a sneaking suspicion that you would say it.

Hunt for the man
Comb the city, every street, every grate
Drag him out, shout the moment that you find him!
Damn!

Knock in the doors, lock up the city
Track him down through this town
And be quick about it…now!

I really wish believers and non believers could get along but there seems no end to the bickering.

It saddens me when some religeous nutcases abuse religeon for their own purposes defaming it. It angers me when non believers go out of there way to try and shut down any religous belief using the Constitution to shut off free speech by quoting “Seperation of church and state”.

Its the arrogant and obnoxious of both extremists that push things farther than they should go.

A scorpion asks a frog to carry him across a river. The frog is afraid of being stung, but the scorpion reassures him that if it stung the frog, the frog would sink and the scorpion would drown as well. The frog then agrees; nevertheless, in mid-river, the scorpion stings him, dooming the two of them. When asked why, the scorpion explains, “I’m a scorpion; it’s my nature.”

She added that, if elected, she would not push the state Board of Education to add such creation-based alternatives to the state’s required curriculum.

I can live with it, I guess. Bush came out with a stronger statement endorsing teaching crackpot science in schools, but it hasn’t done anything to change biology curricula in the last 8 years.

Where’s the story about Barack Obama being a crackhead half his life? Common wired!

Cardiganfox on August 29, 2008 at 9:45 PM

No heartache here. The language of Genesis is very plain and not up for “interpretation,” as say, the dreams of Daniel, Ezekiel, or the Revelation of John are.

Here’s a hermeneutic for you: Never discount the possibility that God simply means what he says.
