First lie about Palin: She dissed the VP job

posted at 2:25 pm on August 29, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Well, no, she didn’t, and I should know: I’m the one who uploaded the YouTube clip back in June that people are circulating today as evidence. Politico accuses her of “distaste for the office” but at least provides the full quote of what she said; Taegan Goddard, who was last seen hyperventilating over Obama’s speech, goes the full Think Progress route and excises the part that proves the lie. Skip ahead to 2:50:

“[A]s for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S. before I can even start addressing that question.”

She’s making a point that should appeal to feminists especially: It’s not that she has distaste for the job, it’s that she’d have distaste for the job if it meant nothing more than serving as window dressing for McCain. A job with “fruitful,” meaningful responsibilities, especially with respect to energy policy, is a different ballgame. Stand by for plenty of distortions of what she actually said, though, starting no doubt with the “Worst Person in the World Segment” of tonight’s episode of “Keith’s Enemies List.”

Update: CNN picks it up, but at least provides the full quote. Note the transcription of her speech as “I tell ya” instead of “I tell you.”

MarcusBrody on August 29, 2008 at 2:33 PM

The strength of the Palin pick depends a lot on the ability of Team McCain to use all the criticism against palin to dig into barry and to start providing a new livable narrative for this country and not just bullet point policy talking points. They need to start rallying people and getting them involved. They got to build social capital for this party and get it working again… They got to prepare the conservative movement to keep going even if we get annihilated in the election.

Palin = narrator, McCain = Role Player

ninjapirate on August 29, 2008 at 2:33 PM

You can’t reason, or debate, with shameless liars who’ll say anything, and that’s exactly who’s running the Democratic Party these days, and especially the Obama campaign.

RBMN on August 29, 2008 at 2:34 PM

If this is all they can come up with they must be truly desperate.

evenfarer on August 29, 2008 at 2:34 PM

I don’t know why so many people frequent Politico. It’s just as much a left-wing site as DailyKos, they just do it in a more mature manner. Look at their online poll results sometime! They have been slandering McCain (except when they wanted him to beat actual conservatives in the primaries) and are now slandering Palin. JMart is the worst because he pretends to be nonpartisan in his coverage of Republicans, but never passes up an opportunity to attack.

davenp35 on August 29, 2008 at 2:35 PM

Oh, and our betters across the pond are also starting to dismiss the pick:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7588435.stm

Analysts say Mrs Palin was chosen to rejuvenate the campaign of Mr McCain, who is celebrating his 72nd birthday.

Some commentators are calling Mr McCain’s running mate decision the strangest since Dan Quayle, George Bush Senior’s young and untested pick in 1988.

The fact that she is a woman and a fresh face on the national scene is obviously a potential plus, bringing an excitement and newsworthiness to the Republican ticket, the BBC’s Justin Webb reports.

But her less than two years in office would undercut one of the McCain campaign’s central criticisms of his Democratic rival Barack Obama: that he is too inexperienced to be commander-in-chief.

The choice seems an audacious, perhaps slightly desperate, effort to bring youth and vigour to the Republican ticket, our North America editor adds.

They just don’t get it.

rbj on August 29, 2008 at 2:35 PM

Mr. Huckabee, for his part, responded with trademark humor. “The Air Force has a saying that says if you’re not catching flak, you’re not over the target,” he said. “I’m catching the flak; I must be over the target.”

Sarah is DEAD on TARGET!

After all, the Dems were always blaming Cheney for advising Bush on foreign policy, but McCain doesn’t need her help there. What’s wrong with a VP that wants to take an active role in the executive branch?

Steve Z on August 29, 2008 at 3:13 PM

These lies will be great…they will go overboard to diss her, and make fools of themselves.
Meanwhile, they (McCain/Palin) will tone down the “attack” dog mentality and go after the “good old boys” inside the beltway. The maverick has the history of fighting them, and Palin isn’t part of the beltway.

It is painfully obvious that the Obama camp has been blindsided here and feels they have to do something, anything, to try to tarnish this woman before the weekend news cycle and then the convention. The problem for them is that her comments will bolster her image as an outsider and someone who is level-headed and willing to speak her mind.

It would be dangerous for Obama/Biden to keep going down this path. Biden’s racist comments about Quickie Mart clerks is only one area that has not been touched by the McCain campaign.

No matter what they do or what they say – positive or negative – they are screwed, and they know it. That is what makes all of this so delicious.

The Obamaites aren’t bright. 2 tweets I’ve seen on Twitter: One tried to make an age joke about McCain saying he had to be assured Alaska is one of the 48 states. Huh? I thought there were 58. The other claimed Hillary’s orange pantsuit had more political experience than Sarah Palin. Nice. Too bad ol’ liver lips didn’t choose the pantsuit as his running mate.

Question: What would Palin have done if attending services for the first time at a new church, the pastor launched into a lying, racist, hate-filled, un-American rant?
A. Sits quietly for 20 years.
B. Rounds up her family and leaves immediately.
C. Rounds up her family and leaves immediately, but returns to ream the pastor.

Needless to say, with Obama I never got past Wright.

And a couple weeks ago Biden was explicitly denying he was in the running. So?

This smell of desperation is going to be in the air for the next two-plus months.
