Ferraro: Palin a “historic” choice for McCain
posted at 2:00 pm on August 29, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

How does the first female VP candidate feel about the second? Geraldine Ferraro says that many women feel disaffected by the way Hillary Clinton got treated by the Democratic Party and the media — and they will appreciate an opportunity to support a historic ticket:
Sarah Palin made explicit reference to Hillary Clinton’s remark about “18 million cracks in the glass ceiling”, an overt reference to the historic opportunity for women in this campaign. Will that convince some of Hillary’s supporters to cross party lines? A large number of them already seemed open to that possibility — and Palin certainly has Ferraro intrigued.
Ferraro’s comments point up another potential land mine for Barack Obama. The media may stoke all those leftover resentments if they try to hit Palin hard in the next few weeks, which may drive off even more women than otherwise.

I stand corrected. Maybe Ferraro isn’t as partisan as I made her out to be.
MadisonConservative on August 29, 2008 at 2:02 PM
Indeed. Especially since she’s going to be the first woman vice president. WOOT!
inviolet on August 29, 2008 at 2:03 PM
Ferraro is just the tip of the Ice Berg. Palin brings all kinds of strengths with various constituencies. She’s the perfect pick. Go to http://www.gop.com and http://www.johnmccain.com and send them money! Do it now!

The solid (D) moms in our email thread were really hesitant at first, but once I showed them this quote, they started talking differently, “If she can VP, why couldn’t I be?”
Now that’s inspiration.

Ferraro has been decidedly less partisan since the BO campaign dealt her the race card earlier this year.
HawaiiLwyr on August 29, 2008 at 2:05 PM
Ferraro saw the ugly side of the libs that we republicans now all along. She saw how the party were stupid hacks.
jencab on August 29, 2008 at 2:06 PM
Again, Palin pick is political genius.
Palin will not get the hardcore femi-nazis, but they were always in the tank for the Dems. They threw themselves at Bill Clinton, philanderer and womanizer for cripes sake.
But for most middle of the road women who might be lifelong Dems but not blind loyalists, McCain/Palin can win them over.
I hate to say this openly, but McCain’s Maverick moderateness basically ensures victory over Obama’s hard left ticket. McCain pulls left of center women in, Palin seals the deal.
Obama has played identity politics one too many times, and it will bite him in the rear.
BKennedy on August 29, 2008 at 2:06 PM
Right on Geraldine!
McCain and Palin will crush the liberal messiah and old “foot in the mouth” Biden.
rplat on August 29, 2008 at 2:07 PM
I do believe that Ferraro has just given permission for all Hillary backers to switch to McCain/Palin.
MarkTheGreat on August 29, 2008 at 2:07 PM
I think Ferraro is speaking for a whole bunch of women voters who are steamed beyond measure over the way Hillary was treated by her own party in favor of B.O., and they were just itching for a reason to go with McCain. Thanks to his choice of Palin, they now have that reason.
pilamaye on August 29, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Ferraro is the type of woman that Obama needs to be careful of. She’s a democrat already mad that Hillary didn’t get the nomination. If the democrats attack Palin too hard, the women like her will gladly vote for McCain.
guitarplayer on August 29, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Considering that the Obama campaign called Gerry racist this year I would not be too suprised if, when in the privacy of the voting booth, she pulls the lever for McPalin.
Elizabetty on August 29, 2008 at 2:09 PM
This is a real roll of the dice in this election. I can’t recall such a gamble before in modern times.
A Presidential candidate with minimal foreign policy experience and largely, as Krauthammer pointed out today, a stranger.
And a VP candidate with almost no foreign policy experience and from a state with a population less than all of our major cities.
Two strangers from strange (Chicago/Alaska) lands.
SteveMG on August 29, 2008 at 2:09 PM
We need a new advocate. This loser hasn’t been seen in political life for two decades. Throw her back to the dark hole from which she emerged.
The lady is trying to be relevant. I get that we need to grab the Dem votes, but maybe we can start bullpenning some more female Republicans by putting them face-forward.
I want more Republican women interviews about this choice. THEY will speak most clearly to those lingering Clinton voters.

Zell Miller should call Gerry and say, “Come on over.”
Wethal on August 29, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Gerry is doing this:
1. Because Sarah is a female and second on the list now.
2. BHO Camp called her a Racist (smooth move BHO)
3. She wants to keep with the hope that woman will see that it will do well for other Females with a “dream”
4. Knows that Sarah is a hardworker and has done this on her own… with backup from her family.
5. I think Gerry likes her. :)

You don’t suppose the lynching she received at the hands of the Obama mob (read: The MSM/DNC Elites) had anything to do with that, do you? ;)
SuperCool on August 29, 2008 at 2:14 PM
Totally agree with you there, but Ferraro opens the door for us. You can bet the MSM will not actively try to pull Republican women for interviews, but it is impossible to shut up Geraldine Ferraro, or really any jilted feminist. It’s part of their nature, and no matter how far left or Demo entrenched they are, like all women they have a tendency for manipulation/revenge when they are deeply wronged that exceeds all other emotions, opinions, or thought.
You know, the whole “woman scorned” thing.
I’m sure some people will castigate me for my “sexist” remark, but I’m a broker of reality. When a woman is deeply, deeply wronged, she will always seek revenge. Lefty Feminazis show this trait more so than others.
BKennedy on August 29, 2008 at 2:14 PM
Someone needs to remind the Obama campaign that payback is a b*tch!

So far, I’ve seen Kaye Bailey Hutchison (sp?) and Mark Sanford interviewed about her. Andrea Mitchell got to Kaye quickly, and she did a lousy job–fricking b***h. Sanford, having learned from a previous meathead interview, did very well.
Line up, GOP. She’s the real deal. And Obama is no comparison. He may have spent more time in elected office (11 years or so), but he’s spent about half of it campaigning for his next office while accomplishing little in his current office.
As David Brooks wrote today, all of his accomplishments are yet to come.
BuckeyeSam on August 29, 2008 at 2:15 PM
Don’t be fooled, Madison. She’s a party hack and always will be. However, she has been scorned and so has Hillary. Heaven may have no rage like love to hatred turned; however, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
ManlyRash on August 29, 2008 at 2:16 PM
Has anyone else noticed how played down this story is by the MSM?
Kini on August 29, 2008 at 2:17 PM
I am worried about Hillary right now. She just got bitter, grainy salt rubbed in her wounds, and if McCain/Palin win, her life long goal to become President in 2012 just got seriously degraded. Palin will have trumped her in that race.
Who’d have imagined this playing field even a year ago?
leftnomore on August 29, 2008 at 2:18 PM
You guys got iy wrong. It’s “Hell hath no fury like an Algore scorned.”

Expect to see more Clinton supporting Democrats on Fox News doing everything than can to subtly sabotage the Obama campaign and expect to see fewer and fewer of them on MSNBC and CNN. I think that is already happening.
CanadianGuy on August 29, 2008 at 2:18 PM
Has anyone noticed how we don’t WATCH the MSM?
leftnomore on August 29, 2008 at 2:18 PM
Watch for Obama to pull a George McGovern/Tom Eagleton in the next few days or weeks. Dump Biden and then offer Hillary the VP slot.
The vehemence of the Obama camp’s response to Palin, already, shows the Dems misunderestimated the GOP once again. They are treading on dangerous ground…go after Palin and disaffect 55% of the voters in America…or dump Biden and try to get Hillary to jump on the Obama bandwagon, so they can say “See? We gots a woman on the ticket, too!”
Elections are won when a candidate sets the tone, tempo and timing of the process. 24 hours after the love-fest in Denver, seems McCain has pulled the carpet out from under The One.
Palin is already a stated favorite of the evangelicals, of the NRA, the pro-life voters, the small town America voters, of the drill here, drill now crowd, among others…and she has only been on the ticket for a couple hours.
coldwarrior on August 29, 2008 at 2:19 PM
Marsha Blackburn was on Fox a while ago and she was brilliant. When the interviewr asked her about Palin’s lack of experience she said, “women know all about many different kinds of leadership. Sarah Palin has been a PTA president, a basketball coach, a mayor, a commission chairman, and now a Governor. She showcases all the ways women are leaders throughout American life. Her leadership skills are unquestionable.” She is more of a leader than Hillary Clinton has ever been. Hillary has never even led a PTA, never chaired a commision, never ran a local government, and never served as a Governor and a commander in chief if a state National Guard. Nor has Barack Obama.

the right wing purists didn’t have a clue.
mylegsareswollen on August 29, 2008 at 2:21 PM
Let me restate my earlier post:
Has anyone else noticed how much McCain’s veep pick is being played down by the MSM?
My morning news is still full of Obama’s historic (if you call it that) bellowing (speach) and just a blip on McCain’s (truly historic) veep pick.
Kini on August 29, 2008 at 2:21 PM
Even MSNBC.com has a big pic of McCain/Palin and a tiny pic of Obama in the lower right corner.
Fizzle.
Mr_Magoo on August 29, 2008 at 2:22 PM
If the DNC had any brains (they’d be the RNC), they wouldn’t dump Biden for Hillary. They’d dump Obama for Hillary.
ynot4tony2 on August 29, 2008 at 2:23 PM
And if you read the recent articles on Hillary’s campaign she wasn’t a very decision-make or good manager of that, either.

Obama picking Biden may go down in political history as one of the dumbest campaign moves ever. Right up there with McGovern’s Tom Eagleton pick.
RBMN on August 29, 2008 at 2:24 PM
The beauty of this is that Palin seems genuinely humble, and perhaps even a tad overwhelmed. I believe in her, but this is huge for her and her family. God Bless ‘em!
gmoonster on August 29, 2008 at 2:24 PM
My first reaction to Palin was: she has been a governor for only 18 months.
Then I hear she called out a fellow party member on an important state committee for corruption, she has been firing people who needed to be fired in Alaska, she is “Maverick” like John McCain, and she is out to put her country first and party second. She and McCain get along well.
I’m sold.
McCain/Palin.

Another thought on McMavericks brilliant move….everyone expects him to only be a 1 term president…..Palin is young….hmmmmm! Now with the esteemed Senator from NY counting on running in 2012, how does this affect that?
Also, Ferraro is a politicaly savy democrat, and one that a lot of that party will listen to, not just the women… I’m going to kind of regard her as a good weather vane for some trends….
Time for lunch ….

ManlyRash on August 29, 2008 at 2:27 PM
The level of PUMA crossover will tell us whether they value Roe vs Wade more than the extraordinary gender opportunity McCain and Palin offer. I can’t think all of them will let a single issue decide this for them.
a capella on August 29, 2008 at 2:27 PM
That was a surprise to me, too. She does not speak Washingtonese. She’s an American first and a politician second. As it turns out, she happens to have a strong political track record. Alaska is “littered with bodies who tried to cross Palin.”
indythinker on August 29, 2008 at 2:27 PM
She started in the PTA,then through city politics, then the ethics panel, then the governor’s mansion.
This is how politics in the USA is supposed to be. Not hanging out with crooks and domesitc terrorists (Obama) or 36 years in the US Senate (Biden).
What did Biden do before he was a senator anyway? State politics? Practice law?

Here in politically corrupt Illinois, we elected Carol Moseley Braun a number of years back to the U.S. Senate.
People tend to forget that Braun wasn’t elected by the black constituentcy, but by the female vote. Women wanted a voice in politics and got it. Then, when Braun proved to be just as dishonest as any male politico, male and female voters dumped her.
I suspect that Obama’s handlers are just beginning to realize that they have a serious problem.

It will depend on how they present the Roe opposition. If she say she has a strong personal and religious problem with abortion, but wants Roe overturned just so the issue can go back to American voters (where it belongs) I think she will do fine. If she comes across as a moralizing scold, it will hurt…a lot.
Fred! could be very helpful in coaching her in this regard.
