VP: Why not Fred? Update: No way, says Fred aide

posted at 12:30 pm on August 28, 2008 by Allahpundit

Good question, one I’ve asked before myself. A source close to Thompson told Jim Geraghty in late January that he isn’t interested in VP; au contraire, reported Carl Cameron that same day, it was VP that Fred had his eye on all along. He has more Senate experience than Obama, is close pals with McCain, would get the base jacked up like no one else, and would match up well with Biden in a debate between a guy no one knows versus a guy everyone who’s seen a few episodes of “Law & Order” recognizes instantly.

Drawbacks? The man famously doesn’t like to campaign — but then, he’d only have to do it for eight weeks. Americans won’t be thrilled having two guys on the ticket with a history of cancer — but it’s not like the left can run ads calling attention to that fact. He’s got money from Hollywood and his lobbying work — but he’s folksy enough that he doesn’t fit the stereotype of plutocracy the Democrats are trying to force on McCain. Centrists might blanch at his red-meat conservatism — but having Fred on the bottom of the ticket would give Maverick more room to be Maverick at the top. Good lord, I think I’m talking myself into this idea. Fred! Fredmania!

One minor problem. If he’s the pick, what’s he doing rolling out a new PAC this morning?

As I’m typing this, Byron York says the person to watch is Pawlenty. If you’re wondering what he’ll sound like in action as the VP nominee, here’s a clip of him from GMA this a.m. going off on the Emperor and his new clothes. Reads well if you transcribe it, but as delivered… Click the image to watch.

Update: Maverick claims he hasn’t made his pick yet, sources say otherwise.

Update: No dice, says Geraghty, citing a source close to teh Fred.

YES! Fred Fred Fred!!!
Ahhh he already said he has no intention of being VP anyway.

I was always in favor of Thompson/Pence as our ticket but it obviously didn’t work out for us Fredheads……

HoosierCon on August 28, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Pawlenty is so dweebish.
I know it’s nitpicking but appearances matter- Mitt, or better yet Fred, is the tough-guy ticket.

jjshaka on August 28, 2008 at 12:33 PM

I noted the dimwits at Democratic Underground discussing this possibility at length a week or two ago, much more than the discussion of any other veep consideration, based on a “source” that said he would be it.

Hmmmmmmm.

If it’s true, it will push me over the edge.

a week old ham sandwich could beat this democrat ticket. which shows how lame mccain is since he cant pull a sizable lead. thompson will bring back conservatives and pull in the “independents” much better than most other choices. i’d beat money on at least a 10 point bounce from announcing Fred! as veep candidate.

chasdal on August 28, 2008 at 12:39 PM

Centrists might blanch at his red-meat conservatism — but having Fred on the bottom of the ticket would give Maverick more room to be Maverick at the top. Good lord, I think I’m talking myself into this idea. Fred! Fredmania!

His conservatism wasn’t ever really that “red meat” to begin with – he just acted like it was for the primaries, and since he’s an old Southern guy, people bought into it. If you think he’d be anything other than totally in line with McCain as the VP nominee, you’re deluding yourself. It wouldn’t be a bad pick, though, since you can expect true conservatives to continue falling for the good ol’ boy shtick, just like they did in 2007.

Big S on August 28, 2008 at 12:39 PM

If McCain believes that Romney might cut against evangelicals and cost the ticket time and money with damage control, then Fred becomes the default candidate.

Pawlenty, and I don’t know much about him, but what a contrast. Same age as Obama and Pawlenty has actually accomplished something. That would be an obvious contrast.
Pawlenty, cut the blinking down, it made me nervous.

This is a cruel tease. Fred would be awesome. It’s too good to hope for, so I’ll try to put it out of mind.

But there’s no doubt he would eat Biden alive, slap the press around, and energize the base.

I agree that Palin and Hunter also would be good choices. I would be pleased to see Cantor, too.

JudetheFossil on August 28, 2008 at 12:46 PM

Ol’ Fred? Seriously? Ol’ Fred himself?

Man, I’m just salivating here. Where’s csdeven? We need to hear about the red pickup truck! Good times!

I’m a Romney guy, but if it’s Fred or Palin, I’m happy.

It ain’t Fred, though. Two Senators? Not a chance.

Vanceone on August 28, 2008 at 12:46 PM

I’m guessing that Romney isn’t the one for the simple reason that McCain is a spiteful petty old man who holds grudges longer than the Clintons. For that reason he will go with an unknown, unelectable choice that does nothing for the ticket but doesn’t get in the way of McCain’s big fat ego either.

highhopes on August 28, 2008 at 12:46 PM

We’ll all know in a couple days. I think Fred would be great. My gut tells me it will be Mitt. I’d like Pawlenty because he’s not a DC guy.

I think there are too many DC people on these tickets during a time when DC approval rating is an all time low. But ultimately it doesn’t matter.

ThackerAgency on August 28, 2008 at 12:46 PM

One was pro-amnesty, one wasn’t. One was pro-tax cuts, one wasn’t. One drinks the global warming kool-aid, one doesn’t. Those are the clear-cut differences. The rest are clear policy positions from Thompson that McCain is wishy-washy on.

And to top it off, one wasn’t suggested as the Veep candidate for Kerry in 04 by the current democratic Veep candidate.

MadisonConservative on August 28, 2008 at 12:47 PM

Great I can see the nickname right now “Old” and “Tired”. Fred would have been great if he wouldn’t have thrown the primary for McCain. Besides, the South is not the place they should be concentrating to pick up votes.

Considering his crappy showing in the primaries, I think you should rethink this one, AP.

If it was the Fred! from the Die Hard movie, I’d say maybe but this guy looks like the crypt keeper. The pictures you run of him are what, at least ten years old?

As for Pawlenty, he was good in that clip but could someone give him some eyedrops or something?

I still think Maverick needs to get a woman on board. I think Meg Whitman or Carly Fiorina would be good, maverick-y choices.

Its a shame, too, because he’d be awesome…instead, we’ll probably get Pawlenty. That doesn’t energize anyone, and I wouldn’t expect any bounce for McCain off of it. You don’t want a VP where everyone goes, “He’s nice and all, but…”

This would be Putin’s worst nightmare…

Look, I don’t know who McCain will pick, but it should not be in any way someone who is supposed to “fix his shortcomings” i.e. Romney on economics. He needs to double down on his strengths: experience, experience and more experience. Screw the “two old guys” fears. Poeple are not going to worry about that when a NATO ship hits a Russian mine in the Black Sea in late October.

Obama made a rookie mistake by basically confirming to one and all that he lacks any experience, foreign policy or otherwise, by picking Biden. The smart play would have been to double down on the youth and “change” mantra. He’s now chosen to play his opponent’s game.

If Pawlenty wasn’t such a milquetoast or Palin was in her second term as governor, either would be absolutely perfect. Pawlenty defeats the “old” and “rich/out of touch” memes, but I just think the guy will get rolled by Biden in a debate. The best we could hope for is that there isn’t a Bentsen-Quayle “you’re no Jack Kennedy” moment. Palin defeats the class warfare rhetoric as well, gives the excitement of someone new and different, but jeez, just two years as governor is thin as thin can be on experience. I do think that Biden will condescend to her in the debate, and that could be very helpful with women voters. I’m almost inclined to get someone like Carly Fiorina or Meg Whitman if you’re going to pick a woman.

Beo on August 28, 2008 at 12:58 PM

When you think about it, VP is the perfect position for Fred. A VP is basically a figurehead anyway (unless the Preident is incapacitated, of course) so Fred wouldn’t have to work too hard, which suits his approach to politics to a tee. Fred would be a natural hanging out at Cheney’s Undisclosed Location from Day One.

The only problem is that Fred would have to campaign until the election, which would seriously cut into his leisure time. I don’t know if he’d be up to that, given his campaigning (non)performance as a candidate.

Cicero43 on August 28, 2008 at 12:59 PM

One was pro-amnesty, one wasn’t. One was pro-tax cuts, one wasn’t. One drinks the global warming kool-aid, one doesn’t. Those are the clear-cut differences.

One of those other differences is that Thompson has a history of being functionally pro-choice, while McCain is very pro-life. I actually favor Thompson on that one, but you’re defining “conservative” as aligning with your own top two or three policy obsessions, and leaving others where Thompson is less than “perfect” out. The main reason he gets away with that, I believe, is his Cranky Southerner act.

God strike you down and make you ugly!

I watched some Cantor vids on YouTube last night. I like him and I hear they say he is squeeky clean and has a good-looking family.

I watched one vid with Chris Matthews who just brutalized him in typical CM arogant fashion since Cantor was the “enemy”, twisting everything he was trying to say, shouting him down and looking smug about it. I almost threw my Ipod out the window! Cantor seemed somewhat flustered and I thought “Biden debate” but he did at least try to remain calm and get his point across. I would have walked away from the camera (which is why I’m not a politician).

Cantor might need more time. I’m just not sure. I expect after trying to respond to Matthews, even facing down the rest of the world would be a cakewalk. So I’m probably overthinking it.

It does make me wonder why Leibs is so heavily involved in this process and Mac may be working a Cantor thing out through Leibs. We’ll know soon I guess. At least Mac isn’t dragging it out for a whole week.

VP: Why not Fred?

I’ll tell you why not, it would make way too much sense.

Good ideas are not the fashion these days.

My order of preference for McCain’s VP:

1) Hillary Clinton
2) Dick Cheney
3) Allahpundit
4) Ted Stevens

In that order.
