The obligatory “Jimmy Carter says McCain’s milking his POW experience” post; Update: Obama camp to “milk” Biden’s son’s Iraq experience?

Having accused him of this myself just a few days ago, I’m in no position to throw stones. But enough people are e-mailing the link that I guess you guys want to talk about it, so here you go.

When did this site become the Jimmy Carter defense fund?

Former president Jimmy Carter called Republican presidential candidate John McCain a “distinguished Naval officer,” but said the Arizona senator has been “milking every possible drop of advantage” from his time served as a prisoner of war in Vietnam…

“John McCain was able to weave in his experience in a Vietnam prison camp, no matter what the question was,” said Carter, a 7-year Naval officer who served aboard submarines. “It’s much better than talking about how he’s changed his total character between being a senator, a kind of a maverick at the time, and his acquiescence in the last few months with every kind of lobbyist pressure that the right wing Republicans have presented to him.”

While we’re on the subject of milking military service for advantage, check out the beginning of his speech at the convention four years ago. No word in the USA Today piece, unfortunately, on whether the meme about McCain’s wealth has been beaten deep enough into the ground yet by the left to qualify for “milking” status, but he does helpfully note that if Obama loses a close race it’s because of racism. Exit question: What if Obama wins a close race?

Update: Be wary of the Prowler, as they have a habit of turning up quotes that seem too good to be true, but here’s what they were floating a few nights ago:

Biden’s other son from his first marriage is scheduled to be deployed to Iraq in early October, an event the Obama campaign has factored heavily into its early October campaign schedule.

“Biden is very well aware that his son’s deployment is going to be a big part of what we do in October. It’s part of our narrative and we’re going to milk it for all it’s worth,” says one of the Obama advisers. “Republicans would do the same.”

And to think that this man was once the President of the United States.

How very sad.

even scarier to think he worked on strategic nuclear submarines….

Where’s a rabbit when you need one?

If Obama wins a close race? It’ll be in spite of those evil racist Republicans, racist to the core, who are racist and evil, I tell you.

And then, the “reeducation camps so no one will ever have to face questions of their race again except the Joooooos” will open, and voting for McCain is prima facie evidence you need to go there for at least ten years.

The best part of living through your miserable presidential years, is we ended up with Reagan.
Gas shortage, double digit inflation, double digit interests, hostages, allowing men to be killed, farmers going out of business, military budget slashed, Russia being empowered, failed peace talks, backing down from Korea…nothing you created was good.

Jimmy Carter is milking his failed presidency.

Spirit of 1776 on August 28, 2008 at 8:03 PM

Did you know that John Kerry served in Vietnam?

Funny how Carter is now an example of the Clinton legacy. It seems that former Presidents refrained from getting in deep against their parties opponents in subsequent elections from their terms in office. But, since Bubba has been out on the trail trashing Republicans and Hillary’s opponents, the new precedent is set. Jimmah’s being a good little soldier for the Democrat party. How noble of him.

Mallard T. Drake on August 28, 2008 at 8:04 PM

I think you were wrong to diss McCain for talking “too much” about his service, AP. I sure as hell think that doddering, senile old ex-peanut farmer is wrong to do so.

Of course I also think Osama Obama is wrong for not talking about his relationship to Rezko, Ayers and all of the other terrorists and criminals he has surrounded himself with, but for another reason.

All Jimmuh has to his credit is hostages, Iran, mean ol’ rabbits and a “peace” pledge that went nowhere.

Everybody can be right sometimes. Mr Carter is possibly right to remind Mr McCain about this; being a brave POW is an interesting and useful bit of additional experience for PotUS, but not a reason to be given the job.

* Killed nuclear power in the U.S.
* Handed Iran over to the nutjobs
* Let US hostages rot in Iran for 444 days
(Iran freed them within minutes of Reagan’s inauguration)
* Flubbed the Desert One rescue mission
* Recruited and armed Bin Laden as an anti-USSR mujahideen
* Gave away the Panama Canal
* Treasonous dealings with Castro, Arafat, Tito, Il-Sung,
Ceaucescu, Chavez, etc.
* Created the Dept. of Education
* Won a Nobel Prize… a sure sign of Anti-Americanism

ZING!!!

twoarmman on August 28, 2008 at 10:00 PM

Democrats, on the whole, have an extremely difficult time drawing analogies and drawing moral equivalents.

McCain’s capitalizing on his military service is understandable. Biden’s capitalizing on his son’s military service is strange. McCain has two son’s in the service, the younger son has served one (maybe two?) tours, and yet he’s been almost silent about their service.

Leave it to the Dems to capitalize vicariously only on someone’s military service.

Screw Carter. I would have served if I’d been drafted in 1979, but I would have been drafted only because Carter made us weak. I’ll never vote for a weak-a** Democrat as long as I live. And Obama’s cut from the same cloth.

Listening to the beginning of Obama’s film, he said his grandparents weren’t complainers–then why is he and why is he a Democrat. I really loathe this guy.

trailboss on August 28, 2008 at 8:10 PM

I used to think that, too. I used to say it a lot, actually. But I no longer feel that way about him. He is a melancholic megalomanic who so micromanaged his presidency, that he would waste thousands of hours of his staff’s time to find out where storm drains emptied. So suspicious and paranoid was he, that he refused to share valuable information with his staff and often made decisions simply by his own accord. His appeasement during the Iran hostage crisis set the scene for what we are dealing with the Middle East today. His total lack of respect for the office of the presidency led him to break with tradition and continue on his globe-trotting monster visiting and president bashing. I feel that the evidence has shown him to be a definite antisemite. No, I no longer think of him as a good man. He is a deeply troubled and conflicted man, still bitter because he did not win a second term and he will do anything in his power to change his legacy. Sadly, he has, only not in the way he wished.

One of the most ignorant things Carter said right after Brezhnev invaded Aftganistan is that he was shocked by what the Soviets did. Anyone who has read the communist manifesto realizes that Brezhnev and his fellow patriots eventually want a communistic world. They were for starting “wars of liberation” everywhere and ultimately making the world socialist. Carter was not smart enough to see through all this and stupidly said he was “shocked when the USSR invaded Aftganistan. When I was in the eight grade i at least knew what the Russians goal was and Nikita Khruschev made that clear.
