Too bad that the real conservative running for the Senate in the Palmetto State is the Democrat, Bob Conley. Otherwise, the state is fine form with this ad. (BTW, Conley is a true conservative- completely pro-life, against illegal immigration, etc. unlike Grahamnesty)

I have a little experience with properties held in trust. Depending upon the amount of control afforded the trustee, trust assets change all the time. It's not uncommon for residences, lots, multi-unit dwellings, etc. to be bought and sold frequently in order to maximize the trust's assets.

In fact, many trusts require the trustee to make such moves to maintain the trust's value.

I suspect that's what's going on.

In any event, I'd love to see him put it to bed without going back to Hanoi.

My mom had an interesting thought on this whole thing. She said that McCain not knowing off the top of his head how many homes he owns could show that he isn't materialistic, they're just not that important to him.

Glad the SC GOP is pushing back.

OPEN LETTER (READ: "PLEA") TO SENATOR MCCAIN

Dear Senator McCain:

Please stop playing the p.o.w. card when asked about house counts. I respect your service and all you went through for your country, and so do most Americans, but it doesn't speak to the issue. It looks like a dodge. Remember when Rudy got dinged for answering "nine-eleven" to every question he was asked?

Here, use this .. you can have it for free:

"Listen, of course I know how many residences Cindy and I own and use. The issue is that there are investment properties. Some rentals, some lots, etc. When asked, I knew that if I just gave just my residences, some nitwit would dig up our tax returns and accuse me of lying, because more properties are listed. So I asked for time to get an answer to that question that wouldn't be twisted into something silly, which it has."

You're welcome.

How about doing a house(s)-owned by Senators and spouses "house count" and see whose party has the most? Somehow I think the GOP would have the fewer given the likes of the Kerrys, Kennedys and Rockefellers (if you think that's some sort of basis for choosing a government or president).

It's going to be some moment when they show the film of McCain before his acceptance speech. I'm sure they will play up how many years he lived in modest military housing, both with his parents and on his own; how many times he moved around and didn't have any roots growing up, etc. Military life is very hard for kids, and a lot of them do not grow up to be the kind of people John McCain is.

I think America will be ready to chip in and buy him another house by the time that film is done.

Well it kind of does. To get a Q2 GDP growth of 3.3% they had to use an anual inflation deflator of only 1.2%

Does anyone, even the government, think that inflation is running at only 1.2% ?

Sorry MB4, your attention to the actual components of what comprises a quarterly QDP figure will undoubedly fall on deaf ears around this place...

Now if you guys really understood those figures, and how they are derived...but then facts would "undoubedly (sic) fall on deaf ears".
It is hilarious watching two buffoons trying to tear apart statistics they know nothing about.
Here, look, over here a shiny object...

I think it makes a pretty strong general point that McCain has experienced hardship and is not some rich man who has always had a silver spoon in his mouth.

I know that all thing being equal, I'd find someone who has experience want and deprivation as more attractive then someone who never has.

The NeoCons on this site aren't bothered with Bush & Co's weak dollar policy or that the growth (if you can even call it that) is a result of cheap exports and taxpayer subsidies (that's a euphemism for "stimulus checks). Not to mention that the number will mostly likely be revised downward once Bush & Co. leave town. NeoCons: Get shovel, dig hole, insert head.

I think the ad is useful, but obscures its main point. It says, "sure, I have a bunch of houses now, but for 5-1/2 years I only had what I was wearing, and the VC's might've taken that away at any time. I made it through those times and prospered afterwards -- you can make it through these times and prosper yourselves."

It's such a dumb argument.
If a candidate DID have it so hard, I wouldn't want them in office. Give me someone who is capable of making a fine living to run this country.

Have you heard about McCain's ad that will run tonight? Congratulating Obama? Now, THAT is class!

Contra Ed, I do think that this ad addressed the actual thrust of Obama's "Houses" attack. "Houses" did try to portray McCain as out of touch with the average American, but it did that by attempting to create a disconnect in the mind of the viewer between their own situation and their perception of John McCain's, namely: I have it hard, McCain has it easy.

Now you can reply to that attack by saying it isn't true, but the fact is that at some level it is true. McCain does have a sweet life--for that matter, so does Obama--but that doesn't necessarily mean he's out of touch. The best response accepts the grain of truth within the attack and puts it in a different, more positive light.

This ad from the South Carolina Republican Party does just that. McCain has it easy, it admits, but he used to have it hard and he survived. The subtext is that although I have it hard, I can survive too.

Now you can reply to that attack by saying it isn’t true, but the fact is that at some level it is true. McCain does have a sweet life–for that matter, so does Obama–but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s out of touch. The best response accepts the grain of truth within the attack and puts it in a different, more positive light.

Does anyone know what congress does? Does anyone know what the jobs entail? Or the presidency? Not many do, it would seem, watching the media and the campaigns trying to create drama over things that do not matter.

I don't know that people in the past really knew either. But our public schools are abyssmal and which party is responsible for that?

You can bet public school kids know everything there is to know about contraception, but what, maybe 20% can identify the three branches of government?

I knew I'd get attacked for that comment.
LoL
if nothing else, people are predictable.
I shouldn't have said that about foriegners...it's just that I was talking to a friend of mine, lives in Europe..blah, blah.......I don't give a flip what foreigners think either...until I start to think like them. This entire election process is becoming a joke.

There are issues facing this country.....Does anyone know what congress does? Does anyone know what the jobs entail? Or the presidency? Not many do, it would seem, watching the media and the campaigns trying to create drama over things that do not matter.
How about researching Obamas previous elections, jobs, business partners, etc. ??? Where's the information? I'm tired of having to dig for it, while I watch the shiny television sets with talking heads so full of it...oh, i can't finish that joke..it would be racist...or something.
McCain's information is easy to come by. Many votes have been cast by him over the years.

What I care about is the Future. The NEXT four years for this country. It’s no wonder that people in foreign countries sit and laugh at us. Idiots, we look like. Spoiled brats.

Then you will be voting for Obama. His future picture that he paints looks pretty darn good. Money returned, lower fuel prices, lower taxes, other countries love us, our military will come home, peace, prosperity, etc.
You don't believe that? Why? Because of his history, his background, his values shaped by his education, lack of experience, his HISTORY.
Get it? Leaders are measured by their past accomplishments, the challenges that they overcame, not by what they promise in the future.
The future means nothing, it hasn't happened.
McCain spent 5 years overcoming unbelievable odds of surviving, and 24+ years in the senate...Obama gave a speech in 2004, and one year in the senate.
But you will vote who promises you the best future.
