South Carolina GOP on a McCain “House”

The South Carolina Republican Party pushed back — hard — against the class-warfare attack from Barack Obama and the Democrats over how many houses John McCain and his family own. This ad uses McCain’s years as a POW to underscore how much he sacrificed for his country, a way of both defending McCain and putting Obama on the defensive (via Palmetto Scoop):
During a combat mission over Vietnam, John McCain was shot down and severely injured. John McCain’s new home for the next five-and-a-half-years would be an enemy prison cell.
This is where John McCain was starved, beaten, tortured, and maimed for life.
So the next time Barack Obama talks about one of John McCain’s homes, remember this one.
Does this respond to the actual thrust of the Democratic argument? The criticism is that John McCain can’t possibly understand the concerns of normal folk, with all of his wealth. That ignores the fact that Barack Obama does pretty well for himself, too, and that their last nominee had also married a wealthy woman and enjoyed the lifestyle that went with the marriage.
This doesn’t exactly address the surface of their argument, but it attacks it in a totally different way. It argues somewhat obliquely that Obama has never had to sacrifice for his country, certainly not in the way McCain did. It points out the easy ride Obama had in progressing through college, law school, and politics.
Both arguments seem pretty silly to me. McCain certainly can point to his war record with pride and as a reason to trust him. On economics, though, he’d be better off pointing out the hysterics in the Democratic Party who scream Depression! while the economy continues to grow.

Obama has done nothing but take from this country, he’s contribution so far is a net negative.
He’s accepted paychecks for elected positions where he’s done absolutely nothing beyond run for the next office.
Can the voters who elected him honestly say they got their dollar’s worth out of him? Of course not.
All Obama does in office is line the pockets of his supporters and run for the next office. If he’s elected, the latter will be eliminated and the former will take up all of his time.
What a worthless man Barack Obama is.

This is effective because the liberal mind only holds images, not facts.
Every time they mention McCains homes, a liberal will flash to these pictures.
This ends the discussion from the liberal side.

Maybe, but it sounds more like John Kerry: “I was in Vietnaaaaahhhhhmmmmm.”

They should do an ad that includes the richest senators. The last time I looked, democrats outnumbered republicans. They want class warfare, give it to them. Democrats have as much, if not more, money than republicans. Even at the local levels in my home town.

Barry needs bitchslapped. We need to hire some plumbers to take photos of the family at leisure at Casa O’bama. He is pretending that McCain lives like a prince and he is facing Grapes of Wrath style life in his and Michelle’s rhetoric.

you’re right Michelle I can’t believe because like your arugula I don’t have a common touchstone to base belief on.

This is a stupid angle. It is a defense of capitalism which is something that ought not be required in the USA. It would be better to highlight the massive wealth of many top Democrats including Pelosi herself. If the Dems want to make wealth an issue, throw it right back at them. Voters wre going to tire of the POW angle as the answer to every McCain ctiticism.
DerKrieger on August 28, 2008 at 2:43 PM
There is no argument.
During his show at the Saddleback Church, John McCain hit a home run when he said he wants everyone to be rich.
He needs to run with that.
I am getting fed up with republicans running from success and wealth. I am tired of them running from their success in living the American Dream.

McCain’s experiences as a POW have absolutely nothing to do with the topic of not knowing how many houses he owns. This “ad” is way off topic.

This is why you can’t be a campaign manager, you think too logically.
Liberals respond to emotions, not facts. If you showed how much Pelosi makes or has, no big deal, or Feinstein, or that fact the Bidens neighbors are the DuPonts, doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if they take graft, or use their apartments as a bordello, or caught using drugs, it is what image they project is what is important.
right2bright on August 28, 2008 at 2:51 PM
Sure it does. Barack Obama continually moans about his “humble” upbringing. So does Michelle.
For five and a half years, John McCain’s “home” was a North Vietnamese prison cell.
Which is exactly why how many homes he owns or does not own is irrelevant. Is it illegal to own more than one home? What the hell difference does it make how many homes he owns? How many does Kerry own? How many does Clinton own? Who cares?
What is also relevant is why Barack Obama continually refuses to provide straight answers on the shady funding of his own estate in Chicago.

Vashta.Nerada on August 28, 2008 at 2:51 PM
I agree. They better start talking about how McCain, with Romney’s help on the economy, will be able to make the American Dream attainable for Americans who work hard and are able to own income property but don’t run those properties like Rezko. Pound the message that Rezko was a slum lord (now a convicted felon) and that Barry bought property at a discount because of his buddie’s help.

Rick on August 28, 2008 at 2:56 PM
The question was a set-up, he may still not know how many homes he owns. Just like Kennedy doesn’t know how much stock he has.
Certain items go into blind trust, if he had said 6 he may have had 5 or 7. Much of his money and his wife’s investments are in a blind trust, that trust could hold any number of properties. It just wasn’t important to him to know except for the ones he and his family uses, but he knew they could have been more.
I have a feeling most people know this. Don’t you remember the flap about the taxes? All about nothing, just a trap and he didn’t fall into it by giving a wrong answer.

This is exactly the kind of retort the dumb-ass Obama brown shirts deserve. This is real life and people need to know about McCain. As for the number of homes he has . . . who cares. He’s obviously a successful man and that’s what this country is really about. Somebody needs to tell the Democrats and the rest of the leftists in this country that being rich does not make you bad, it is one element of life’s achievements that makes you a successful person. If the left wants to exist in a pandering nanny state where success is measured by value of your welfare check, then let them, but then also let them separate themselves from the rest of us.

I find it hypocritical of the Dems to use the multiple houses smear on McCain. Seriously, Obama is wealthy, Kerry was filthy rich, Bubba’s and Hillary’s tax returns showed them to be excessively wealthy, the Dems have Hollywood backing them (very rich, spoiled people), most of the Dem Senators and Congressmembers are rich, and some of the richest people in the world are Dems. And, what’s wrong with being wealthy? The Dems demonize people for having money – - it’s ridiculous.

The libs love to mock the POW angle in their forums. They dismiss almost anything McCain says by implying that he thinks his 5.5 yrs as a POW gives him the right to say or do anything without criticism. It has the potential to be as overused as Rudy’s 911 meme. In both cases, a man lived through a situation that justifiably earns him respect and deep, meaningful experience. But brought into the public eye too often, it takes on broken record status. We need to be careful to only play the POW card when absolutely necessary. The house attack angle did not necessitate it in my opinion.

Gee, I leave for a couple of weeks to the Olympics and look what I come back to.
An even more desperate plea for attention.
Several years that define the man, that shaped him, that taught him courage, leadership, value of life, is monumental. He knows it, and the SC Republicans who did the ad knew it.
Aren’t you the one, several months back, that linked the anti-McCain site that doubted that McCain was even a POW, and then snaked out of it by saying something like “I don’t know if they are right or not but here is the link”. A person who hates McCain so much that even him being tortured isn’t enough for you…what a life you have.
Don’t forget the red truck…
right2bright on August 28, 2008 at 3:08 PM
This ad does not smack of John Kerry! Regardless of what Kerry did in VietNam (or Cambodia for that matter), he came home and pissed on his fellow soldiers. McCain, on the other hand, refused to even piss on one soldier by allowing his father’s clout to get him released from the POW camp early. And don’t be so naive as to think that everyone knows this story. Lots of average Americans are not as informed as us.

I disagree. The left discounts real heroism because they don’t think this country is worth laying down one’s life for.
Could you realistically see some spineless milquetoast like Barack Obama, living through a situation like John McCain did? And not selling out his buddies and his country for personal gain? Please.
“Heroism” to the left is confined only to losers and victims. And their politicians aren’t heros, they are all unethical, worthless political hacks, there is absolutely nothing at all heroic about any of them.
John McCain is a genuine war hero. If the left doesn’t like that, it’s only because they were rooting for the other side.

Its a defensive ad, it recognizes that there is a problem with the idea that McCain has multiple homes. McCain shouldn’t have to defend the number of homes he has, and he certainly shouldn’t use his war record as a means to excuse his multiple homes…what only war heroes can have multiple homes?
Here is an idea…McCain understands the American Dream, and will fight for every American to have the opportunity to live the American Dream, unlike silver spoon Obama and Biden who think the American Dream is something to be critical about. And show their respective million dollar homes.

This b.s. that they lived on a farm and had to use an outhouse according to Dick Morris was the result of them having to live there while there huge house in town with the ballroom was being remodeled. And, yes, outhouses were still common back then on farms.

In contrast, when I hear about Obama and drinking, smoking hooch, and snorting coke in high school, I can’t help wondering how he got into Columbia. I understand that he transferred there after a year or two at Occidental, but I’d still like to know just how much of an affirmative-action candidate this guy is. Both getting into Columbia and then into Harvard Law School.
I’d love to see Obama’s academic record. He reads an excellent speech, but that’s it. I think he’s gotten pretty far on some charm, presentable looks, and some amount of intelligence–so did Rasputin and Charles Manson. Just because he pauses before speaking doesn’t make him smart. I think he struggles so much in townhall settings because he really hasn’t thought a lot of issues through. He’d be great for a think-tank, but not for the presidency.

Who gives a hoot in hell what foreign countries think of us anyway? The majority of them live in authoritarian hell holes because their masses are too historically balless to challenge the criminal kleptocracy who runs the country (i.e. China and Iran).
Personally, I laugh at the poor schmucks who have to live in China. They eat terrible food not fit for an American dog, they have no freedom of expression and the recent Olympics ceremonies looked like something out of Brave New World.

You don’t believe that? Why? Because of his history, his background, his values shaped by his education, lack of experience, his HISTORY.
Get it? Leaders are measured by their past accomplishments, the challenges that they overcame, not by what they promise in the future.
The future means nothing, it hasn’t happened.
McCain spent 5 years overcoming unbelievable odds of surviving, and 24+ years in the senate…Obama gave a speech in 2004, and one year in the senate.

Barack supporters are fascinated by shiny objects. They’re . . . just . . . so . . . cool . . . dude. Trails.

I knew I’d get attacked for that comment.
LoL
if nothing else, people are predictable.
I shouldn’t have said that about foriegners…it’s just that I was talking to a friend of mine, lives in Europe..blah, blah…….I don’t give a flip what foreigners think either…until I start to think like them. This entire election process is becoming a joke.
There are issues facing this country…..Does anyone know what congress does? Does anyone know what the jobs entail? Or the presidency? Not many do, it would seem, watching the media and the campaigns trying to create drama over things that do not matter.
How about researching Obamas previous elections, jobs, business partners, etc. ??? Where’s the information? I’m tired of having to dig for it, while I watch the shiny television sets with talking heads so full of it…oh, i can’t finish that joke..it would be racist…or something.
McCain’s information is easy to come by. Many votes have been cast by him over the years.

I don’t know that people in the past really knew either. But our public schools are abyssmal and which party is responsible for that?
You can bet public school kids know everything there is to know about contraception, but what, maybe 20% can identify the three branches of government?

Contra Ed, I do think that this ad addressed the actual thrust of Obama’s “Houses” attack. “Houses” did try to portray McCain as out of touch with the average American, but it did that by attempting to create a disconnect in the mind of the viewer between their own situation and their perception of John McCain’s, namely: I have it hard, McCain has it easy.
Now you can reply to that attack by saying it isn’t true, but the fact is that at some level it is true. McCain does have a sweet life–for that matter, so does Obama–but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s out of touch. The best response accepts the grain of truth within the attack and puts it in a different, more positive light.
This ad from the South Carolina Republican Party does just that. McCain has it easy, it admits, but he used to have it hard and he survived. The subtext is that although I have it hard, I can survive too.

It’s such a dumb argument.
If a candidate DID have it so hard, I wouldn’t want them in office. Give me someone who is capable of making a fine living to run this country.
Have you heard about McCain’s ad that will run tonight? Congratulating Obama? Now, THAT is class!
bridgetown on August 28, 2008 at 5:00 PM
I think the ad is useful, but obscures its main point. It says, “sure, I have a bunch of houses now, but for 5-1/2 years I only had what I was wearing, and the VC’s might’ve taken that away at any time. I made it through those times and prospered afterwards — you can make it through these times and prosper yourselves.”

Does anyone, even the government, think that inflation is running at only 1.2% ?
MB4 on August 28, 2008 at 3:30 PM
Sorry MB4, your attention to the actual components of what comprises a quarterly QDP figure will undoubedly fall on deaf ears around this place. The NeoCons on this site aren’t bothered with Bush & Co’s weak dollar policy or that the growth (if you can even call it that) is a result of cheap exports and taxpayer subsidies (that’s a euphemism for “stimulus checks). Not to mention that the number will mostly likely be revised downward once Bush & Co. leave town. NeoCons: Get shovel, dig hole, insert head.

Awesomely awesome ad.
Don’t you hear liberals’ head exploding? Thay can’t believe they are up against a Republican who has Absolute Moral Authority.
rockmom on August 28, 2008 at 6:00 PM
I think it makes a pretty strong general point that McCain has experienced hardship and is not some rich man who has always had a silver spoon in his mouth.
I know that all thing being equal, I’d find someone who has experience want and deprivation as more attractive then someone who never has.
Sackett on August 28, 2008 at 6:03 PM
Now if you guys really understood those figures, and how they are derived…but then facts would “undoubedly (sic) fall on deaf ears”.
It is hilarious watching two buffoons trying to tear apart statistics they know nothing about.
Here, look, over here a shiny object…
