Poll of GOP delegates: We want Romney!
posted at 5:37 pm on August 28, 2008 by Allahpundit

No surprise that he’d top the list given how high his profile is, but Huckabee’s high-profile too and he actually ended up with more delegates than Mitt did.
Even so, note the margin:
Romney was chosen by 38 percent of delegates in a new CBS News/New York Times poll, far ahead of the second place finisher, former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who was selected by 7 percent of delegates attending the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.
Tom Ridge, the former Pennsylvania governor, and Tim Pawlenty, the Minnesota governor, were each selected by 4 percent of delegates surveyed. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin were each selected by 2 percent.
Joementum? In with a breezy one percent. I don’t think we’ll have to wait much longer for resolution: Marc Ambinder claims that the VP pick has already leaked to Fox News, which, if true, surely means we’re getting it tonight to maximize the scoopiness of it. Exit question: On a scale of one to ten, how exciting is a VP Romney? Exit answer: Four.
Update: Hutchison says it’s not her, and that she thinks it’s Romney.
Update: A question raised by this post from Steve Kornacki. Karl Rove’s known to be high on Romney, which is political poison for McCain insofar as it links him back to Bush if he ends up putting Mitt on the ticket. Is Rove touting Romney for precisely that reason — because he secretly thinks Romney would be bad for the ticket and is trying to taint him with his own endorsement? Surely Rove’s savvy enough to know he’s not doing Mitt any favors this year by pushing him.

Romney would be a horrendous pick. Everything you have seen of Hillary, Bill, and Biden having their words used against Obama will bite McCain hard when the Dems do the same thing with Romney providing their ammunition. Romney will be painted as a younger version of McCain/Bush without the balls. Plus, Biden would chew him up in a debate. Do we really need to go back and revisit how Romney blew the primaries?
He will either go safe with Pawlenty or ‘maverick’ with Lieberman. My gut says Lieberman.

I remember when Allah basically endorsed McCain after Fred! dropped out, but not enough people read this website for that to matter. The first thing people hearing about Mitt is “he’s a flip flopper, Mormons may be unelectable, never in the military” was the media’s caring contribution. People have learned more about him by now and are more familiar with the guy. That’s why he does a lot better on those Veep polls than he did during the primary. I know he’s not the perfect candidate but I think he’s the best we have right now.

The only advantage Romney may have is that he is not a conservative. He backed away from that in a debate with Ted Kennedy, under fire, Romney ran from his conservative credentials.
So we would in essence have 4 liberals, each one with a a varying degree of liberalism in their campaign.
And all 4 moving to the middle.

Good thing its 2008 and Romney’s no longer that political neophyte just trying to help the Massachusetts economy by facing the Herculean task of running against unbeatable Senator Kennedy in Massachusetts in his first ever political campaign, even for so much as city council.
thecountofincognito on August 28, 2008 at 7:10 PM
McCain does need help in Michigan.
The only VP selection that would hurt McCain in Florida is Casey Anthony. Otherwise he smokes Obama there.
I don’t think even Joseph Smith could help McCain in Nevada. Things here have changed a great deal since you could make book that the GOP would carry the state every cycle. This is a toss-up state that I expect Obama to carry.

Also, the poll’s numbers have been consistent since 2002. I suggest you read the full article</b.

I am enjoying Intrade. McCain’s numbers are directly proportional to Romney, and inverse to Pawlenty. Every time Pawlenty’s numbers go up, McCain’s go down. Every time Romney ticks up, so do McCain’s. Interesting.
Vashta.Nerada on August 28, 2008 at 7:15 PM
Why not float another name? John Huntsman, gov of Utah? Huntsman endorsed McCain in 2006. Yes, 06. He’s been pretty popular, and if McCain pulled a rabbit out of his hat at all, wouldn’t Huntsman be a big one?
It would really cut off Huckabee and co at the knees–St. Olaf, too. All the “I’m not biased against Mormons, just Mitt!” people would have to put up or shut up.
Huntsman is young, ran a major corporation, good looking. he’s got lots of Mitt’s qualities without the so-called liberal baggage. Huntsman went to Iraq with McCain.
if McCain wants a true darkhorse who has been loyal to him, why not Huntsman?

It wasn’t either of two. It was — sorry, John, but this IS the “Straight Talk Express” — McCain’s using immigration to pander to the Hispanic community in Florida.
That enabled him to eek out a 5% win over Romney there… knocking Giuliani out of the race, and compelling Mitt to step aside.

Huck was on Rush Limbo yesterday and made up with the mormons.
Huck has been in the news quite a bit recently.
Huck was at the Rick Warren debate, coaching Mccain on what to say, right before Mccain got his boost in the polls.
Huck’s been opining on the georgian war and various subjects including, how Mccain can’t pick a pro-abortion VP…right before the GOP elite started floating pro-abortion VP selections.
They have done a great job of throwing the media off Huck’s trail, until the dems convention is over.

Bush parlayed his dads success, Chelsea stepped into a “consulting” job into high bucks fresh out school, Kennedy, Gore, Thompsons kid, Jackson’s kids, the list is endless. When your dad has power, big power of a Governor or Senator, the path as a “consultant” becomes a little easier then most.

Okay but do you feel mad at him sometimes? I mean Huck just did what has been going on forever. Romney had to know he was dragging us into a lot of stupid stuff. I just like to be low profile.
I LOVE politics. I always follow the Presidential races very closely. But I like to be on the outside looking in.
It’s better to think people don’t have a clue who you are but don’t hold any animousity toward you. But now I know that isn’t true. They don’t have a clue but they don’t like us anyway. That was what I got out of the polling in the Primary. I always thought that the the other churches that hold those seminars and sunday school classes only affect the weak minded. That the real people don’t like it when people talk bad about others etc. I’ve met some of those people and they are always an egg short of a dozen. So I didn’t think they were that big a deal. But letting all that propaganda go unrebutted has really allowed some really strange stuff to be mainstream. Turning the other cheek is still best though. Just don’t plan on running for President.
I guess I don’t like what I learned about my fellow Americans in the election. It sort weakens my faith in humanity.

Dear Senator McCain:
Please stop playing the p.o.w. card when asked about house counts. I respect your service and all you went through for your country, and so do most Americans, but it doesn’t speak to the issue. It looks like a dodge. Remember when Rudy got dinged for answering “nine-eleven” to every question he was asked?
Here, use this .. you can have it for free:
“Listen, of course I know how many residences Cindy and I own and use. The issue is that there are investment properties. Some rentals, some lots, etc. When asked, I knew that if I just gave just my residences, some nitwit would dig up our tax returns and accuse me of lying, because more properties are listed. So I asked for time to get an answer to that question that wouldn’t be twisted into something silly, which it has.”
