Poll of GOP delegates: We want Romney!
posted at 5:37 pm on August 28, 2008 by Allahpundit

No surprise that he’d top the list given how high his profile is, but Huckabee’s high-profile too and he actually ended up with more delegates than Mitt did.
Even so, note the margin:
Romney was chosen by 38 percent of delegates in a new CBS News/New York Times poll, far ahead of the second place finisher, former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who was selected by 7 percent of delegates attending the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.
Tom Ridge, the former Pennsylvania governor, and Tim Pawlenty, the Minnesota governor, were each selected by 4 percent of delegates surveyed. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin were each selected by 2 percent.
Joementum? In with a breezy one percent. I don’t think we’ll have to wait much longer for resolution: Marc Ambinder claims that the VP pick has already leaked to Fox News, which, if true, surely means we’re getting it tonight to maximize the scoopiness of it. Exit question: On a scale of one to ten, how exciting is a VP Romney? Exit answer: Four.
Update: Hutchison says it’s not her, and that she thinks it’s Romney.
Update: A question raised by this post from Steve Kornacki. Karl Rove’s known to be high on Romney, which is political poison for McCain insofar as it links him back to Bush if he ends up putting Mitt on the ticket. Is Rove touting Romney for precisely that reason — because he secretly thinks Romney would be bad for the ticket and is trying to taint him with his own endorsement? Surely Rove’s savvy enough to know he’s not doing Mitt any favors this year by pushing him.

That would never work as the two candidates can’t be 99% alike.

Weight of Glory:
I don’t believe that poll. There is no way that 2% believed themselves to be moderate. I have seen several polls like this and without fail, moderate or center right is the largest group. Conservative is the second largest group and liberal is the last, usually with less than 20%. That is why so many candidates tack center right for general elections. If those numbers were correct, there is no way McCain and Obama would be the nominees.

GO MITT ROMNEY!!
Snicker_Snort on August 28, 2008 at 6:08 PM
Romney’s a 10 all the way as the pick. People worried about the possible attack ads are looking at this from a postion of weakness, worried what the dems might do. No matter who is picked, the dems will have attack ads ready to hit tomorrow as I’m sure McCain had ready for any number of possible dem VP picks last weekend. McCain has to pick the strongest possible candidate no matter how the dems might attack and Mitt is the strongest candidate out there. Who else would you rather have facing down their attacks? Mitt is the most intelligent and quickest on his feet candidate there is. He will stand up to any attack better than any other candidate and will make Biden look small in comparison in any debate. Pick Mitt, put him on a bus and rotate him continuously for the next two months between Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania talking conservative approaches to economic recovery through low taxes and job growth. Picture him up against the likes of Granholm and it’s no contest. McCain-Romney ‘08!

He’ll deliver Michigan, possibly Florida, most likely Nevada and will pull the economic experience rug out from under the Dems.

I heard him on Rush. I thought most of his interview with Rush wasn’t that bad. But that one sticking point really bothers me. He had good things to say about everyone BUT Mitt, although he said he’d support McCain even if Mitt were the VP.
I truly do believe Huck when he says it’s not about religion. But there’s no doubt he can’t stand the guy, and it’s deeply personal.
sulla on August 28, 2008 at 6:11 PM
IF the real Romney speaks, the one who appears and speaks from the heart when the national cameras are not covering him, the Romney who has been on the attack this week or so, he is an 8(Biden a 5 at best for the Dems), but it has to be the warrior Romney, not the evangelical Romney.
McC and Romney will now have to take the gloves OFF.
Benjamin9 on August 28, 2008 at 6:12 PM
I think Rove knows that this election isn’t going to revolve around who he likes. The Dems. are going to make that link anyways, no matter who McCain picks. Even if McCain were to pick Joe, they would say, “This is not the Joe I know, Rove must’ve reached him. Joe sold out and is being controlled by the neocon BushrovianhitlermcCain.” Rove knows this, and is probably just trying to keep McCain from losing this one.
Weight of Glory on August 28, 2008 at 6:13 PM
See, I really can’t see any Dem attack ad on Palin. The closest I can see is using her clips of “I don’t know what the VP job really does!” (out of context, when she was making a case she has tangible, executive duties as a Governor and would rather not be ceremonial).
Romney? A veritable field day, and they can sink the entire ticket. Attack Palin? They’re arguing that selecting a woman executive is an “inexperienced/poor judgement” on McCain’s part, which will cause blowback to half of the Dem electorate.
They’d have nothing on Palin. Nada.

I keep hearing this economic magical thing he has. What makes him more special then Biden on government economics? He raised taxes (fees he called them) in Mass., he took over a financial fiasco the “big dig” and made it work by letting his cronies off the hood for shoddy work. I don’t get this “economic genius” attitude.
right2bright on August 28, 2008 at 6:14 PM
I’m with Jules Crittenden. Romney would be a disaster, and for about two thousand different reasons — not the least of which is his failed socialist healthcare policy in MA, and the Dems aren’t above throwing crap about it, either. They have the Romney attack machine ready to roll.
All this nonsense about “energizing the base” is either delusion or narcissism, and more than a little Kos-like. All the “base” in the world isn’t enough to get McCain elected without the center. You don’t do anything but alienate the center by putting Romney on the ticket.
Then the Dobson crew will start whining, and the Dems will use that. And if you thought the Mormon thing in the press was nasty during the primaries, just wait. It will be the dirtiest, nastiest thing you’ve ever seen.
Which is more important, that McCain defeats Obama, or that the “base” ego is stroked?
And by the way. I like Mitt. Just not on this ticket.

Finally a poll with some relevancy. The delegates get to choose anyone they want as VP and no one else’s opinion really matters. If Romney is at 38% then it should be easy to find another 12% to get the necessary delegates to put him over the top.

If Romney’s not it, how about a real dark horse. Let’s say that McCain took note of Obama picking his senate friend. What if McCain did the same thing? Who has been permanently attached to the teet of John McCain for the last 10 years. He is fairly conservative, he is great on judges, but has a independent streak that mirrors McCain’s. Yes, I’m talking about Lindsey Graham the man who Rush calls the Vice President, might actually become the vice president. Just a thought, but it could happen.

I like Romney, but I’m still holding out hope for The Stache.
I like the idea of a VP who not only knows what’s going on, is cool in a crisis, and would be better than anyone else on the planet to take over in the event of an emergency, but also looks like he could, and perhaps would, body slam Achmadinnerjacket through a conference table if he had to.
Also, it would gaurentee the VP debate as a TiVo momment:
Biden: blah,blah,blah,blah,blah-You guys are racists and elitists!
Moderator: Ambassador Bolton, your rebuttle?
Bolton: (adjusts glasses. clears throat. glances over at Biden with “The Stare”.)
Biden: (puddle forming around the base of his lecturn) I’m sorry! Please- it was Obama! He made me say all that stuff! Axelrod told me if I didn’t say it he’d strangle my dog! Bob Beckle said he’d take my thumbs! Ya gotta believe me! The DNC’s illegaly registering voters in key districts in every swing state! I have proof! Here are some more excerpts on how solid the poll is:
Weight of Glory on August 28, 2008 at 6:18 PM
Yeah, if Rush’s interview was the only thing I heard I probably wouldn’t think anything of it. But in context, after seeing him on Colbert’s show and then first thing the next morning on Fox and Friends, in each case saying the same thing which basically boiled down to “Mitt should not be picked for VP.” Its clear that his purpose is to spit out that sentence in as many directions as possible on the run up to the VP announcement. I think he had to be a little bit more subtle then usual on Rush’s show considering his audience. On Colbert he was blatant and came out directly and said “Mitt Romney should not be the VP selection”. He was also very forceful in making that point on Fox this morning.

Forget 2008 for the time being. McCain has already made up his mind. The die is cast.
What does this poll say about 2012? Assuming McCain either loses this year or only serves a single term, this really points to Romney being the front-runner in four years.
One thing is for certain. If Romney is the front-runner, he isn’t going to waste away his polling lead like Giuliani did this year.
Marking Time on August 28, 2008 at 6:32 PM
Yeah, that $42 million out of pocket and his elite strategical skills helped him so much in the primaries, didn’t they?
Mitt wouldn’t be a terrible choice, but it would be a risky one. During the primaries he won on style, but on substance? Not so much. He even used the same “change” and “yes we can” memes that the Obamassiah used.
His economic prowess? Subsidies for the auto industry, subsidies for ethanol, and was in favor of the horrible Medicare reform act that Bush signed. Mitt was unable to successfully define himself, and in my opinion isn’t quite ready for the big leagues. McCain could do better, and he could do worse.

Here’s one maybe minor reason why Romney will be a good pick. The democrat party will attack him for changing positions. All Romney has to do is tell Biden (or whomever) that he doesn’t mind admitting he was wrong, and he’d appreciate it if Biden and Obama would admit they were wrong on the surge, wrong about the Haditha Marines, and continue to be wrong on abortion. He should then yield some debate time for Biden to apologize.

JetBoy on August 28, 2008 at 6:46 PM
Another poll, about a year old:
So 41% of the country self-identifies as “conservative,” 34% as “moderate,” and only 21% as “liberal.” Further, 14% consider themselves “strong conservatives” vice only 6% “strong liberals.” So, not only are there twice as many who consider themselves “conservatives” as “liberals,” but two thirds as many “strong conservatives” as “liberals,” period.
This, from a survey sample where 47% are Democrats or Democrat leaners vice 43% Republicans or Republican leaners, where 68% think the country is on the wrong track, and 65% disapprove of President Bush’s job performance.
My guess is it has something to do with what people consider conservative and liberal. After all most Americans consider McCain to be a conservative. And we know that is not how some others see it. And most liberals today prefer to be called progressive because of the negative hype around liberal.
So perhaps, it is in the eye of the beholder. But the voting public is not voting like a bunch of conservatives.

Keep in mind that people have very different definitions of what “liberal”, “moderate”, and “conservative” mean. Also, even if they consider themselves generally conservative or liberal on most issues, there might be one or two that throw them to a candidate that they wouldn’t otherwise support. Most Americans are not ideologues (unlike the people who hang out on blogs) and speak a very different political language.

Maybe, but Palin’ll own in the swimsuit and evening gown competitions. (^o^)

If McCain picks the Kenneth Copeland-loving Huckabee I may never stop throwing up.

When Romney hears about this poll, he will have to wonder where the support was in the primary. Like many I was late to the game for Romney. I think he would be the best pick for VP. The economy is the biggest issue, and Romney knows more about the economy than McCain, Obama, and Biden combined. I would give Romney an eight. Everyone else below five. No-brainer to me, but we shall see.
