McCain’s mystery ad to Obama revealed: Congratulations; Update: “We wish more of his ads took that tone,” says Team Barry

McCain says: “Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America. Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed. So I wanted to stop and say, congratulations. How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we’ll be back at it. But tonight Senator, job well done.”
Not just classy but shrewd, as it’ll buy back some of the goodwill he may have squandered over the past month by hitting Obama so hard. McCain’s done an admirable job during the campaign of trying to rehabilitate the GOP’s image on race to what little extent he can, made more admirable by the fact that in this year of all years it won’t do him any good with black voters. I’m relieved my prediction was wrong and our e-mailer’s was right.
Update: Here’s the video. Belated exit question: Which nutroots blogger will be the first to call him “patronizing”?
Update: One other shrewd aspect to this is that if Obama attacks him in the speech, it makes him look ungracious.
Update: The Obama camp grumbles an obligatory thank you.
Obama campaign manager David Plouffe — who did not know the content of the ad until we read him the script — just told us that the McCain ad is “a very nice gesture. We wish more of his ads took that tone, but it’s a very nice gesture.”
Plouffe said the Obama campaign would run a similar ad next week congratulating McCain on his nomination.

McCain cheated on his wife. Lots of people do that.
Obama made friends with domestic terrorists, black supremacists, and money launderers. I don’t know too many who do that.
Take the intellectual dishonesty to a site more befitting, like Kos or HuffPo.

Say, coming in a little late, I have to ask: Did the Obama content reviewers had time to check for subliminal phallic symbols, hints of racism, and the like?
Or were they all assigned to persecute Stanley Kurtz as he review the truckload of documents from Obama’s days with Ayers on the Annennberg? Or were they dispatched to DC like the Wicked-Witch-of-the-West’s monkeys to hound the Department of Justice about the Ayers ad?

I strongly believe that his comments have but one purpose: to inflame members through statements outrageous enough to trigger outcry, but subtle enough for us to believe. Don’t buy into it.

Very smart. He sounds stately and Plouffe took the bait and came off like a brat.
If McCain had put out an add with this tone a few months ago I would have been annoyed. He has a history of being a little too mild with his adversaries. He’s shown lately that the kid gloves are off so this ad shouldn’t leave a sour taste is his voters mouths. It should just serve to ingratiate him with some swing voters.
twoarmman on August 28, 2008 at 6:22 PM
I think that until you go through 5+ years of torture by enemy agents, and have to deal with readjusting to life after that kind of extraordinary experience, you don’t have a single right to make that judgment. When you’ve been held prisoner for the better part of a decade, are constantly beaten and mentally broken down after suffering a crash that leaves you crippled for the rest of your life, and then have to lay all that down on your wife whom you were kept from for all that time, and then avoid any such negative reactions (drinking, drugs, infidelity), then you can go ahead and throw all the first stones you like.
If you haven’t, and let me make it clear, I know you haven’t, then you are a spineless little keyboard jockey sniping at someone who had more guts in his fingernail clippings than you could ever hope to hold in your entire lifetime. The leftovers of an enema would hold more respect than you ever could. Honor is as beyond your comprehension as the size of the universe. You’re an example of Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection failing miserably.
And the funny thing is, I don’t even support McCain. You, on the other hand, couldn’t get me to piss on you if you were on fire.

I actually think this could be a legitimate exercise. The little I do know about that situation, it is quite unfortunate. It is certainly at odds with my morals and standards. However, do I think it’s worse than befriending a terrorist bombing murderer? Not in the least.
I find it easier to forgive someone who commits a transgression of the carnal nature as opposed to a mortal one. It seems most reasonable people would agree.

McCain has no honor? No courage? Listen idiot. Refusing release as a POW for four years unless all of your fellow POW’s are released as well is honor, is moral courage. McCain refused early release for four years. Now get lost.

alphie on August 28, 2008 at 6:28 PM
Alphie, McCain’s first wife supports his candidacy and one of her son’s, whom McCain adopted, works in Cindy’s distributorship. The affected parties have come to terms with this matter; why haven’t you.
Shifting gears, I still don’t understand how Obama sat in the pews of his church and never once forcefully confronted that foul-mouthed pastor about his lies, his hate, and the un-Americanism. I suppose his presence there was only politically motivated.
At any rate, Obama told us in a mediocre speech in March that he wanted to lead a national discussion on race. But he doesn’t possess the moral authority to do so. When he sat on his hands during all those years, he allowed Wright to sow the seeds of hate and resentment in his congregants for far too long. Think about that. Think about have an intelligent discussion about race with anyone from Obama’s church. Obama’s silence was the height of cowardice. If Obama had been in McCain’s shoes in the Hanoi Hilton, he would have been on the first flight out of there when given the chance for early release.
BuckeyeSam on August 28, 2008 at 6:28 PM
You don’t know the ins and outs of that marriage. You’ve gotten every single fact of his father-in-law wrong so far. Do 5 years as a POW and come back and try to assimilate back into a marriage and see how well you do. You have no basis to criticize anyone.
Obama killed a law that would resuscitate a poisoned infant who survived abortion, and then got caught lying about it. He also chums around with criminals, domestic terrorists and race-baiting lunatic pastors, and doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about.
Obama’s winning the depravity contest so far.
Chuck Schick on August 28, 2008 at 6:32 PM
The obama campaign has already taken the classless route, in responding to McCain very gracious congradulations.
The left always takes the low, classless road.
Simply compare the right’s compassionate reaction when some big leftie dies (like, Ted Kennedy…coming to a theater near you), or the left’s sick and disgusting reaction to the death (or the time leading up to it), of Tony Snow.

Short of administrative moderation of their comments, the best management is for other members to ignore them, to decline to respond to them at all.

Now the real issues to consider are:
-Did Obama have any attacks in the script for his speech tonight? (If so, will his writers remove them?) I’m going to say no to the attacks, because he likes to pretend that he’s above such things, and his underlings should do it for him in order to preserve his image.
-Will Obama acknowledge McCain’s gracious message at any point in the near future? I don’t care what his team says, will the O-man himself provide a clear response?
-Will Olbermann and Matthews make out on live television as they listen to Obama’s speech? Clearly, yes. Knowing those two, it might get a little violent, but they like to mix it up, right?

Yakko77 on August 28, 2008 at 7:06 PM
Alphie, I know your just looking for a fight. Nobody in politics or even on this blog is perfect. I believe myself to be a pretty conservative person but I do have some liberal viewpoints as well. Even though it is true that Sen. McCain cheated on his wife he is definitely not the first politician (or president for that matter) to do it nor will he be the last. Shoot, I have never been married but I have cheated on a girlfriend before (I felt bad about it for 3 or 4 months, learned my lesson.) I have many, many faults, Presidents bush, clinton, bush 1, reagan, carter…etc..all had many faults. It is what makes us human. But McCain has also shown his good as well in not only the POW situation but in being in the senate doing public service for 26 years, reaching across the aisle and working with democrats to get stuff done, putting his political career on the line when he had bet so much on the surge that obama said wouldnt work and he knew it would. I believe when it comes down to it, and its the day of the election and people seriously think about who they are going to vote for they will compare obama’s non-experience and questionable moves and relationships and super liberal voting record to McCains longer record of his accomplishments, work in the senate, and above all love for country and character and they will make the obvious decision. People will see through Obama, they will not fall for a jimmy carter like president for the second time in a row.

I must say…I am a business owner in southern california…I am all for capitalism…I believe it creates more jobs and gives americans as a whole a better opportunity and a better quality of life…I would not consider the republican party self-hating socialists….I believe the Democrats take that trophy considering all the tax and spend bills they want to put in place and because they blame every little problem that happens in the world on America…I believe that could not be farther from the truth..I will say that Pres. Bush has spent more than anyone else has, but we have had events happen in the past 8 years that not only did no one see coming, but we had to react to it in a way that we have never done before. Could you imagine if Al Gore was in office during the time of the Sept 11 attacks…I believe he would have been such a weak appeaser and it would have put us in a much worse position. I dont want to argue with you, but I dont apreciate the attacks you keep putting on republicans and people who blog here in general. Pres bush had to make decisions that no other pres has had to make. I personally think he did alot wrong as well, im not defending him here. But I believe when we look back in 20 years we will discover that he did alot right as well.. One question for you though…When it comes down to it and there is a grave threat to the safety of our nation, how well do you think Obama, if he is president, will handle it?
