McCain to air ad tonight directly addressing Obama; Update: Social cons threaten war over pro-choice pick

Between this and Drudge’s teaser about possibly leaking the VP pick, they’re clearly very nervous about letting this speech go off without the GOP getting a word in edgewise.
I can’t imagine what he’d have to say “to” Obama unless it’s a challenge for more townhall debates.
Tonight, John McCain will talk directly to his opponent in a television ad his campaign is airing in battleground states, around the time Barack Obama accepts the presidential nomination, McCain’s campaign said…
McCain campaign communications director Jill Hazelbaker said in an MSNBC appearance that the battleground spot is “an historic ad — I think this is the first of its kind.”
“Sen. McCain is going to have an ad that’s going to air in battleground states around the time that Sen. Obama is speaking tonight,” Hazelbaker said. “He’s going to be talking directly to his opponent. So, I’m going to leave it there. But it’s going be very exciting. I think that a lot of people are going to focus on it.”
As is true of all things McCain, the boss is underwhelmed. I remember reading somewhere that back in 2000 McCain had floated the idea of campaigning across the country with Bob Kerrey if each of them won his respective party’s nomination. Is that what this is? A Lincoln-Douglas challenge for the last eight weeks of the race? It has to be some sort of offer; if it’s just an attack ad delivered by Maverick, the nastiness and pettiness of it as a contrast to Hopenchange’s big moment will be a disaster. Serious exit question: What could Obama say or do to have tonight’s speech be judged a disappointment? Picture tomorrow’s headline: “History Made as Major Party Crowns First Black Nominee on Anniversary of ‘I Have a Dream’; Acceptance Speech a Total Buzzkill.” Is there any conceivable way that happens? Drudge has that dopey photo of him up striking his JFK pose as if he has some Herculean task before him and can’t possibly meet expectations, but it’s more the case that he can’t not meet them. Unless he goes up there and drones on, Clintonesquely, about a laundry list of policy proposals — which isn’t a hallmark of Obama’s speeches, needless to say, and isn’t the sort of thing you rebuild the temple of Zeus for — he’s guaranteed ecstatic media coverage through the weekend. In fact, I think the only way the GOP gets any mileage out of this is if he has a “Worship me” moment and says something like, “I am The One.” And after all, why would he need to say it? That’s what the Barackopolis is for.
Update: One other point. If they’re thinking about leaking the VP to steal Obama’s hype, doesn’t that guarantee that it’s a woman? Breaking news about Tim Pawlenty isn’t going to start a media stampede away from Invesco. Breaking news about the first female on a major party ticket since Geraldine Ferraro stands a better shot, especially since it keys in on the night’s theme of Change.
Actually, here’s a horrible thought for you. What if McCain’s ad is his VP announcement? In the form of a challenge: “Senator Obama, you claim to represent a new, post-partisan approach to doing business in Washington. But as usual, while you talk the talk, I walk the walk.” And then the camera pulls back — “Meet my running mate, Joe Lieberman.” Heart-ache.
Update: You know, that last update makes enough sense to me that I think I’m going to offer it as a prediction. His camp wouldn’t be hyping it as hard as they are unless it’s really big news, and it coincides with Drudge’s report about “some sort of confirmation” of the VP pick by 8 p.m. Good lord.
Update: I’d love to be wrong…
Update: A different kind of prediction about McCain’s ad via e-mail from a reader: “A congratulations to Obama, noting that regardless of how one feels about The One’s ability to lead, even if he had been the best candidate ever he wouldn’t have had a shot not too long ago, and that America can progress.”
Update: Roll Call reports a Secret Service sweep at … Mitt Romney’s sister’s house? Mitt Romney’s sister for VP!
Update: And to think, we all expected the Democratic convention to be the one in turmoil. One last eleventh-hour warning to Maverick: Don’t do it.
With John McCain weighing a running mate who supports abortion rights, a revolt is brewing among his conservative base that includes a walkout at the Republican National Convention next week and a huge battle on the floor—especially if he selects Independent Democrat Joe Lieberman.
In addition to the expected brawl at the convention, major conservative donors who have planned to bankroll issue-oriented advertising and other grassroots efforts directed at social conservatives are putting their work on hold and will withdraw financial support, sources tell ABC News.
One conservative strategist characterized the prospect of a VP who supports abortion rights as a “disaster” for the Republican Party—and said selecting Lieberman would cost McCain the election…
One possible strategy is a revolt by some of the 18 state delegations who supported either Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee—and who have not yet turned over to McCain.
Those delegations could—and sources say, likely would–revolt against Leiberman and put in their own recommendation. In the nomination process, a candidate needs five delegations supporting the nomination.

I have this mental image of him going Queeg flying his A-4 trying to buzz the tower ala TopGun but flaming out and planting the scooter instead….in a metaphorical sense him always walking away from the flaming tower while the dying CAG is yelling “MAVERICK!” with his last breath is a metaphor for Juan’s ability to foster party unity…..

It would be sort of a political akido move to use Obama’s own convention to announce his VP. I can just hear his response to any accusation of it being dirty pool: “This ain’t beanbag, baby.”
The more I think of it, the more I like it. Stay inside your opponent’s decision loop. Keep them off-stride. Make him change that well-prepared speech to account for all the possibilities of what this ad is about.
Oh, yeah. Me likee.

Well, if the only goal is to keep Obama’s campaign on life support by stealing media coverage away from the 200th re-run of the “Most Articulate Speech In History,” this’ll get the job done.

Maybe, you never know. And why you may ask.
Sarah has done everything she said she would do.
1. Gas Pipeline approval and AGIA was signed yesterday.
2. Being transparent since she has Started as Gov.
3. Helped the Elderly Alaskans with healthcare
4. Started the Energy packet to help Alaskan with energy releif (the Legislature approved it).
5. Started Ethics reform in Alaska
6. Is Sueing the Federal Government on why they are putting Polar bears on Endangered Species when they are not endangered.
7. Economic Reform, which she has SLASHED the Budget in so many ways the State Senate and legislature about turned blue due to being ticked off.
Sean Parnell is running against Don Young and MAY possibly win.. they are neck and Neck right now.
and the Legislature Head, Lyda Green is not running for re-election of her seat. Which is odd since she has been around for the State for years. I have a feeling she will run for Gov. or take over if Sarah leaves for VP and Sean goes to Congress. Alaska is running itself right now.
My speculation….

Regarding a choice of Lieberman for VP: It would be different if McCain were very conservative and trying to paint himself as bipartisan, but the truth is many conservatives are already planning on holding their nose as they vote for him. Lieberman could be announced as his SecDef, but picking him to be his VP would be the final straw for a number of people. I would have a very hard time voting McCain if he had a pro-choice VP.

Sorry, but this whole post is kinda stupid. Drudge report? So in the tank for Obama it’s not even funny.
McCain has gained huge ground on Obama and the polls don’t show some kind of gigantic bounce for Obama. McCain’s not panicking, and announcing the veep tonight would be tacky.
And the social cons just continue to shoot themselves in the foot, and possibly shoot McCain in the foot with their hysterical bitching about nothing at all…..he’s trying to win some Hillary voters, and if the social con screaming makes it look like he knuckled under to their pressure, it hurts the GOP this fall.
The abortion fanatics are almost as unhelpful as the Obama fanatics.

Anything other than a gracious message congratulating Obama on his historic nomination and saying he looks forward to their debates this fall would look petty at best. I don’t call all Christians book burners, I use it to describe a certain kind that have an obsessive hatred towards Mormons and an obsessive attraction to Huckabee. You are definitely not representative of all Christians.
No people who actually give a damn about true limited goverment, which includes strict adherence to Federalism by the way, are sick of some social cons trying to merge Caesar and God, especially at the federal level. Of course the book burners have anti-evolution so high on their list of priorities because their intellect and, in the case of Huck, looks are so similar to the alleged common ancestor that they cannot understand anything other than a boolean decision.
LevStrauss on August 28, 2008 at 3:19 PM

I hope McCain is going to renew his invitation to Obama to meet him in a series of townhalls or other informal debates/discussions. The empty chair labeled Obama he apparently has been putting on stage with him at his townhalls is only impacting a couple of hundred people at a time. If the challenge goes out in a televised and widely-viewed ad and Obama ignores or rejects it, that will have a wider impact. Obama looks like he’s scared of McCain and/or voters when he refuses to meet his opponent in informal Q&A sessions with real voters. Either way, McCain wins.

My problem with Lieberman isn’t his liberalism on social issues, but rather that he is damaged goods. The dems spent a lot of energy trying to crush him in his last election. I don’t think he’s a really popular politician — he may be respected in some quarters, but not popular.

I remember reading that this “response” ad featuring McCain is only running in battleground states. If that’s the case, he’s not going to announce his VP pick.
He could use the opportunity to touch on the MLK anniversary, and then in that spirit announce something game-changing… Colin Powell’s endorsement, massive middle class tax cut, commitment to run for one term, etc…
I dunno, I just think all this talk about announcing a VP during this commerical doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when it’s only a battleground ad. Of course it’ll be posted to YouTube and picked up by media outlets, but to get a full bang of announcing your VP you’d want the ad airing everywhere.
