Dems getting nervous about the Temple of O

Politico reports that “senior Democratic officials” have had second thoughts about the wisdom of the scope, scale, and setting for tonight’s Barack Obama speech at Invesco Field.  The Greek temple set design appears to have been the last straw, and they now worry about the “rock star” impression that this will leave with American voters who increasingly see Obama as a fad and not a serious candidate.  Democrats failed to foresee this despite nominating their least qualified and experienced candidate in decades, if not in their entire history:

From the elaborate stagecraft to the teeming crowd of 80,000 cheering partisans, the vagaries of the weather to the unpredictable audience reaction, the optics surrounding the stadium event have heightened worries that the Obama campaign is engaging in a high-risk endeavor in an uncontrollable environment.

A common concern: that the stadium appearance plays against Obama’s convention goal of lowering his star wattage and connecting with average Americans and that it gives Republicans a chance to drive home their message that the Democratic nominee is a narcissistic celebrity candidate.

“We already know he is a rock star, we already know he can bring 85,000 people together in a stadium. He has done it multiple times. He needs to talk to people who haven’t made up their minds yet,” said Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen.

“It’s likely that the campaign would do it differently if it had to do it again because the decision was made before the European trip,” said a senior Democratic elected officeholder who has worked closely with the Obama campaign. The GOP narrative of Obama as celebrity took root during that trip, where the Illinois senator played to large crowds of adoring Europeans.

This last statement seems curious.  Granted, it takes weeks to design and build an elaborate stage for a large event, but didn’t it occur to Team Obama that they could scale it down instead?  If they saw signs at the end of July that the arena-rock status played against Obama, why not just cancel the Greek temple and Invesco Field altogether?

It turns out that the event serves a higher purpose — fundraising:

The campaign noted that, aside from the speech itself, it’s designed to be “a working event” that enables attendees to phone bank and reach out to potential voters through a variety of online tools. Holding the speech in a venue that holds 80,000 people also allows tens of thousands of Colorado residents to attend and participate — no small consideration since Colorado is a battleground state where Obama and McCain are neck and neck in the polls.

“Phone bank” means primarily “raising money”.  Even as a rally, though, the event is rather meaningless, made so by the bait-and-switch by Team Obama on the “free” tickets.  In order to get the “free” tickets, applicants had to volunteer for the campaign, two hours per ticket.  That turned this into a co-op, not an open rally where numbers matter.  And if Obama can’t find 80,000 supporters in Denver, then he’s in pretty bad shape anyway.

Obama needs the speech as a direct fundraiser in other ways as well.  He’s already hit up major contributors for million-dollar luxury suites and thousand-dollar VIP seating.  His campaign broke a pledge to eschew PACs and lobbyists in order to wring every last cent out of this speech.  Obama can’t simply cancel this and move it back to the Pepsi Center; it would cost him millions of dollars.

No, Obama is now stuck with the event, although he could still tone down the Greek temple setting.  Apparently, to the consternation of his party, Obama doesn’t want to lose these trappings of celebrity, either.

speaking of Southpark, they should have a goldmine of material to use now against Obama.

Yeah we can kid about the temple of O-pollo but Obama is most definitely changing politics, not into some post partisan, post racial type thing, what he and Dean are doing, and doing very well, is changing the game as far as volunteer work is concerned. They are actually running something that lives up to the term “campaign”. They have people on the ground, they are making the calls, and keeping their volunteers motivated. Should volunteering be without rewards? Not if you want to maintain large numbers

You forgot about HOPE!!!!! and CHANGE!!! And Melissa Etheridge!!!!

I volunteer at all sorts of things without rewards. All it means that if you’re volunteering expecting a reward is that you’re a selfish narcissist who shouldn’t have bothered to volunteer at all. Because you’re not doing it for the good of other people, you’re doing it to assuage your own conscience.

I don’t get what the Obama people were thinking with the Parthenon stage design. We’re in America. He’s running for President, not Emperor of the World. Why use symbolism from antiquity? I guess it distracts the public from associating him with Moses parting the seas, but really? If I’m McCain, I start referring to it as Roman in origin (even though it looks more Greek) because then he can run an ad referring to him as Caesar, and that would just be hilarious.

Populism is rough rule by the majority affiliated through whatever common bond. It doesn’t have to be limited to class although that’s the usual delineation. It could be class, political affiliation, race, religion, whatever. It’s the politics of bullying and bigotry. Obama is a populist and that’s what scares a lot of us.

CaptainObvious on August 28, 2008 at 10:18 AM

In 1919, Lenin said, “The cinema must and shall become the foremost cultural weapon of the proletariat.” In addition to “Si se puede,” the “O” hand signs, pastel lights, and little Obama symbols, I wonder, what other symbolism from Triumph of the Will will we see here? I’m not saying this as an ad hominem attack on Obama and his followers. Rather, if folks actually watch Triumph of the Will, they will see striking similarities in terms of communication themes, methods for capturing the imagination through romantic or pride-stirring images, focus on the youth, a lack of focus on systems, methods or policies, etc. Take note tonight of Obama and this event’s ability to strike up emotional fervor through: use of victimization; the telling and retelling of lies meant to convince the weak-minded; the quasi-religiousness of its leader; use of cultist romanticism; and the blame of others for their problems (the rich, the Man, Big Business, etc.) The main difference is that Obama’s message doesn’t have the nationalistic message that “Triumph of the Will” has. Beyond that, they are remarkably similar in their effects.
Here are a few lines. I’ll leave you to decide who said them.
1. “It is our total belief in ourselves, our hope for our youth, striding forward today, to be called on to finish the work which began…”
2. “We are who we have been waiting for…”
3. “The … people are happy in the knowledge that the divisions of the past have been replaced by a high standard leading the nation.”

So Obama wants to cast himself as Lincoln. With his ‘Lincoln memorial’ inspired stage.

Yet another incorrect, arrogant display from the empty suit that fancies himself to be capable of doing the job he wants. Let alone being one of the great men in US history that he wants us to think that he is.

You do realize that you are promoting your website twice. Up above, and your name. That’s overkill. If you link your name, you don’t have to type it again like you do all the time.

FYI – people who engage in self-promotion with every comment (or copy their own name above their name) often turn off more people off than make new friends that way.

“I hear that McCain has no ground game at all. He would probably kill to be able to put on an event like this.

LevStrauss on August 28, 2008 at 10:05 AM”

You hear…? How is it that McCain’s “lack of ground game” has resulted in a freefall in Obama’s poll numbers?

McCain’s campaign handlers have more sense than to put on the type of event Obama is offering the voters tonight. Keep thinking as you think, and hearing as you hear, while you can. I imagine it might be painful when your head explodes as Barry’s little extravaganza at Mile High cost him another 10 points in about a week.

Has Obama’s temple of doom 7 columns?

BTW, leave the South out of this Obama debacle, as you’ll find the Greek Neo-Classical architectural white pillar columns North and throughout America.

But for “this black boy” whose heart is stuck in Kenya, whom Jimmy Carter presents from Hawaii with a loving mother who abandoned him to her parents to raise after traipsing through Indonesia with another man, and who finally selected Chicago as his stomping grounds to trump CHANGE, for “this black boy” to use the Classical visuals as his backdrop is telling.

1) He needs aesthetic traditional security because his own message of radical change sank like a lead balloon with every legitimate poll. Obama has already used the Fascist and Communist symbolism and architectural aesthetic in his logos.
2) Every Obama novelty is revolting, revolutionary or not.
3) His reliance upon ancient symbols from an era idealizing balance and symmetry proves that Obama knows that his own corrupted ship is sinking fast.
4) Marx tore down the walls of Western Civilization as represented by neo-Classical architecture and the Enlightenment. Barry’s German speech already usurped Reagan’s demand for Communism to give way to Liberty via “Tear Down These Walls” in order to envelope Marx’s ideology in a warm and fuzzy Freudian memory gone awry.
5) Barry plans on staging his own triumphant trumpet call having already campaigned amongst his church (former or not) to raise HIMSELF as the reborn Joshua with his young generation of warriors ready to tear down the walls of Jericho. The video’s online. Listen to Obama’s Joshua Generation speeches.

Quit referencing the bastard Obama as anything more than a FALSE messiah, a FALSE prophet, and a Marxist pig who hides his own identity, unable to accept himself as he is.

Anyone with a clear brain knows that you can tell yourself what you want to hear so frequently and consistently that you weirdly come to believe your own fabrication. The clear brain abstains from fabricating a foundation, sticking with the firm and avoiding the sands of change.

PJ,
That erroneous comparison was discussed ad nauseum yesterday on another thread. Bush’s backdrop was a reference to the White House, which was appropriate since he had been President for four years already. Obama has been co-opting Presidential imagery for months now, and it is presumptuous since he is not yet POTUS.

TOO. GOOD. TO. BE. TRUE.

As if a Rocky Mountain coronation were not lofty enough, Barack Obama will aim for Mount Olympus when he accepts his party’s nomination atop an enormous, Greek-columned stage – built by the same cheesy set team that put together Britney Spears’ last tour.
But the set is designed to evoke the White House and the Lincoln Memorial, not the Acropolis, said staging supervisor Bobby Allen, a Spears set vet.
“We’ve done Britney’s sets and a whole bunch of rock shows, but this was far more elaborate and complicated and we had to do it in far less time,” said Allen, of RDA Entertainment.

The amount of mistakes coming out the Obama camp since the end of the primaries is nothing short of staggering (and dutifully reported by the legacy media…NOT).

1. European tour to shore up his foreign policy credentials? How exactly? Dropping in on other world leaders (who wouldn’t refuse to meet with a presidential candidate even if they wanted to)? Pathetic and the voters saw it for what it was.

2. “Attacked” by a harmless ad comparing him to a celebrity and responding by accusations of racism and worse? Ever hear of a sense of humour Barack? Americans love a candidate who can tell a joke and more importantly, laugh at themselves (Barack should watch McCain in action a few times on the late-nite circuit if he can spare the time from the gym). Americans do not like a self-important, humourless windbag.

The theme would be getting back to what our Founding Fathers intended this country to be. Pointing out how the party under Bush has strayed from those founding concepts.

If you haven’t read Watchman, it’s quite good.

The pity therein is there is no Kovacs in play…just a bunch of Dreibergs

Obama looks like Sonjia from American Idol.

saiga on August 28, 2008 at 1:50 PM

Oh yeah… the stage has an elevator so Obama can rise out of the floor to his screaming, crying fans.

Yeah same thing Bush did in 2004

The democratic ideals that the Greek columns signify—truth, goodness, justice, liberty, and equality—are mocked by the postmodernist worldview Obama brings to Washington. To Obama, Ayers, and their multicultural, morally relevant, postmodernist ilk, these ideas are liquid, vapor; they cannot be agreed upon.

To them, the truth found in a poem is equivalent to the truth found in the empirical sciences.

To the “critical race” theorist, knowledge is “positional.” A triangle in Beijing may have four sides, not three.

“…We hold these truths to be self-evident…” When a truth is self-evident, to think otherwise is impossible. Not to Obama—his version of truth changes daily and no one seems to care.

Ayers and Obama are linked for a reason. They are both postmodernist educators, counting on a generation of voters that adhere to this muddled version of truth.

Obama’s post-modernist columns should be melted steaming piles of goo, not upright fluted columns that symbolize permanence and fortitude.

I think my new favorite part of the setup is the canned crowd noises they have already prepped. FOX was reporting from the stadium this morning and the sound-check guys were playing old Obama speeches to get the levels right … and answering them with canned cheering and roaring.

If they’re going to get 70,000-80,000 enthusiastic people in the stadium, won’t they make enough noise on their own?

I hate to throw cold water over all this heated indignation over the columns (especially since I am not an Obama supporter), but I seem to recall Washington, DC having columns everywhere. The pictures I’ve seen so far remind me more of the Federal Triangle metro station more than any Greek temple.

JayVee on August 28, 2008 at 4:41 PM

Toga Toga Toga…who is going to be fiddling while rome burns? I’ve seen this movie too.

Dr Evil on August 28, 2008 at 4:58 PM

The Temple truly reflects the foundation of the O’Ba’ma candidacy. It is all facade

trailboss on August 28, 2008 at 6:02 PM

Äctually, looking at the “temple” on TV now, it looks kind of… crappy. Bush’s stage in 2004 was much nicer. Maybe the outdoor light just makes it look shabby.

Seixon on August 28, 2008 at 6:11 PM

I saw some pics of that Greek temple thingy Obama’s gonna use, and man alive that’s freaky. We’re headed for some strange days ahead my friends. Don’t get caught up in all the hype.

apacalyps on August 28, 2008 at 7:07 PM

I can’t believe the conservative blogs and the McCain campaign aren’t more embarrassed about making the mistake of not recognizing what the set is supposed to be an homage to. I mean everyone jumped the gun and called “Greek Temple” without thinking.

Typhonsentra on August 28, 2008 at 11:20 AM

My first thought when I read about the columns was that it was the White house, or possibly the Supreme Court. But, then I thought, “nah, that’s to crass.”
