Dems getting nervous about the Temple of O

Politico reports that “senior Democratic officials” have had second thoughts about the wisdom of the scope, scale, and setting for tonight’s Barack Obama speech at Invesco Field.  The Greek temple set design appears to have been the last straw, and they now worry about the “rock star” impression that this will leave with American voters who increasingly see Obama as a fad and not a serious candidate.  Democrats failed to foresee this despite nominating their least qualified and experienced candidate in decades, if not in their entire history:

From the elaborate stagecraft to the teeming crowd of 80,000 cheering partisans, the vagaries of the weather to the unpredictable audience reaction, the optics surrounding the stadium event have heightened worries that the Obama campaign is engaging in a high-risk endeavor in an uncontrollable environment.

A common concern: that the stadium appearance plays against Obama’s convention goal of lowering his star wattage and connecting with average Americans and that it gives Republicans a chance to drive home their message that the Democratic nominee is a narcissistic celebrity candidate.

“We already know he is a rock star, we already know he can bring 85,000 people together in a stadium. He has done it multiple times. He needs to talk to people who haven’t made up their minds yet,” said Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen.

“It’s likely that the campaign would do it differently if it had to do it again because the decision was made before the European trip,” said a senior Democratic elected officeholder who has worked closely with the Obama campaign. The GOP narrative of Obama as celebrity took root during that trip, where the Illinois senator played to large crowds of adoring Europeans.

This last statement seems curious.  Granted, it takes weeks to design and build an elaborate stage for a large event, but didn’t it occur to Team Obama that they could scale it down instead?  If they saw signs at the end of July that the arena-rock status played against Obama, why not just cancel the Greek temple and Invesco Field altogether?

It turns out that the event serves a higher purpose — fundraising:

The campaign noted that, aside from the speech itself, it’s designed to be “a working event” that enables attendees to phone bank and reach out to potential voters through a variety of online tools. Holding the speech in a venue that holds 80,000 people also allows tens of thousands of Colorado residents to attend and participate — no small consideration since Colorado is a battleground state where Obama and McCain are neck and neck in the polls.

“Phone bank” means primarily “raising money”.  Even as a rally, though, the event is rather meaningless, made so by the bait-and-switch by Team Obama on the “free” tickets.  In order to get the “free” tickets, applicants had to volunteer for the campaign, two hours per ticket.  That turned this into a co-op, not an open rally where numbers matter.  And if Obama can’t find 80,000 supporters in Denver, then he’s in pretty bad shape anyway.

Obama needs the speech as a direct fundraiser in other ways as well.  He’s already hit up major contributors for million-dollar luxury suites and thousand-dollar VIP seating.  His campaign broke a pledge to eschew PACs and lobbyists in order to wring every last cent out of this speech.  Obama can’t simply cancel this and move it back to the Pepsi Center; it would cost him millions of dollars.

No, Obama is now stuck with the event, although he could still tone down the Greek temple setting.  Apparently, to the consternation of his party, Obama doesn’t want to lose these trappings of celebrity, either.

Yeah because the set and such was an avalanche not able to be reined in…..

*rolleyes*

Look you guys want to hedge your bets and be able to say “well we kinda knew it may be overboard”….just like Barry Force One you want to pretend that by visualizing Barry as a leader it grants him the experience to be a leader…..

Surely, you jest…

They can’t seem to pump-up his “rock star” status enough. That whole overseas tour was about “rock star”. The messiah is bringing it home tonight. Gotta do it in grand style, and impress the followers, work on their emotions.

That’s all Obama has…

Didn’t the 2008 Virginia Republican Convention feature George Allen delivering a speech in front of big Greek columns?

Just saying.

cornfedbubba on August 28, 2008 at 9:17 AM

But, nothing is too good, too big, or too grandios for Barack HUSSEIN Obama’s ego. I wonder if he’s starting to believe his own hype.

tre on August 28, 2008 at 9:17 AM

Watch the MSM use Greek Tragedy comparisons for their analysis of this speech. Blah.

Obama had plenty of time to realize how ridiculous this setup is as well as going into a stadium of people who you don’t know what they would do to get attention.

He thought this would work since in the primaries people made such a big deal of him speaking in front of these huge crowds of fainting idiots.

McCain campaign did a great job in playing the arrogant and celebrity status of Obama. Showing how out of touch he is with the American people.

I just got this clip from the democrat party meeting where the Greek theme was created.

Elizabetty on August 28, 2008 at 9:19 AM

Why, Obama’s inflated ego is big enough to fill it up. Are you saying Americans won’t be impressed?

Yeah, now that I think about it, it would likely play well in Indonesia or Kenya, not so good in America. Most tune in to see what the party stands for, not for the best stagecraft award.

Starting to believe his own hype? This is the same moron who’s written 2 autobiographies by his mid 40s after having accomplished nothing of substance. Substance abuse is another matter.

Obviously the critics of the Greek temple are just bitter racists who are using this as a distraction and doing nothing to help Michelle’s children.

undecided or moderate donk voter: That’s a nice clip Barry but what are you going to do about X,y, or Z?

Barry: Banzai….uh y’know um uh tire gagues can make up for the 600 dollar gasoline bill the minimum wage workers um uh have to engage in to uh um uh even make it to work to try to better themselves…so although I uh support 4 dollar a gallon fuel costs I just am uh not comfortable with uh um how quick we got there…..”

undecided voters and moderate donks run for cover….

guitarplayer on August 28, 2008 at 9:23 AM

Well, as long as we’re going for the dramatic effect, will McCain draft his acceptance speech in a background reminiscent of a Vietnamese prison camp? I mean, if we’re going over the top…

Nethicus on August 28, 2008 at 9:24 AM

jencab,

Considering the twisted nature of most Greek tragedies, the MSM had better not go there. Let’s see: Oedipus killed his father and inadvertently married his mother. Medea murders her children to keep them from the husband who has wronged her…need I go on?

Disturb the Universe on August 28, 2008 at 9:24 AM

They couldn’t tone it down once they were committed to the stadium. Even that large, elaborate stage looks small in a stadium that size. No, if they’re keeping it in the stadium, which they have to do, they also have to keep the stage as large and elaborate as it is. It didn’t have to be Greek columns, but it had to be something ostentatious that was going to cause him to catch flak.

volsense on August 28, 2008 at 9:14 AM

I agree completely. It’s absurd and shallow. Just like Obama, the Invesco setup is a facade, a pretentions veneer on an empty space.

It is hard to believe that Obama isn’t some joke candidate, like the kind that used to campaign (mostly for local/state office) in chicken/gorilla/cowboy suits in the 1960’s & ’70’s (one here in TX even more recently than that).

The Presidential election has descended to the level of American Idol, and that is not a good thing. At least one good thing you can say about McCain is that he has some sense of the dignity of the office for which he’s running, and (we hope) won’t behave like some kind of cartoon figure at the Republican convention.

mr.blacksheep on August 28, 2008 at 9:24 AM

He takes the nomination on the anniversary of the “I have a dream” speech.

I’m thinking Nemesis will be waiting off-stage for her opportunity to participate:

Nemesis (in Greek, Νέμεσις), also called Rhamnousia/Rhamnusia (”the goddess of Rhamnous”), at her sanctuary at Rhamnous, north of Marathon, in Greek mythology was the spirit of divine retribution against those who succumb to hubris, vengeful fate personified as a remorseless goddess. The name Nemesis is related to the Greek word νείμειν, meaning “to give what is due”.

The Democrats should start to worry about the Greek Temple appearance.
There have been a lot of Appearances in the past week that reminded me of other things,,
Take for example the arrest of that ABC reporter on a public sidewalk, while we all know he was trying to obtains some footage of a example of the ” CHANGE ” the Democrat Elite have in story for Obama Presidency, It reminded me a lot of some Gestapo actions in NAZI Germany before and during World War 2.
I’ve not forgotten all the ” Hope, Change & Unity ” supporters that Hilter had.
Hitler & Stalin brought Change too.
I hope that my beloved America has not forgotten that.

snip———————-

Hubris to Nemesis: Obama and his Temple

Why and how did McCain catch up? Let us count the ways: the disastrous European victory lap of Obama’s; the uninspired professorial pontificating to Rick Warren; the deer-in-the-headlights serial responses to the Georgia crisis; and the McCain ads that were as cleverly effective as they were derided as childish by outraged liberals.

But perhaps the greatest consideration is Obama’s Hellenic hubris, which is different than simple arrogance. Hubris is a sort of fit, a haughtiness steeped in delusions of grandeur and divinity that takes over a weak individual, and soon encourages recklessness and overreaching (atê), all culminating in ruin and divine retribution (nemesis).

Go figure: Obama/Oedipus goes to Berlin. There he speaks in front of a grandiose Victory Column commemorating Prussian arrogance (after begging in vain to have a JFK/Reagan presidential moment at the grander Brandenburg Gate). He reviews American sins, revises the history of the Berlin Airlift, and claims (falsely) he’s the first black high official Germany has dealt with before. Then to hysterical applause from 200,000 Berliners, eager for subsequent free music and beer, he prances home, convinced that this was a success rather than an Apollonian trap.

Meanwhile an Ethel in Tulare turns on the TV and sees thousands of Europeans (who habitually make fun of her country) applaud Obama—and makes the logical assumption that they apparently think he is one of them, rather than one of us.

Next, drunk with pride, Obama thinks that such a losing paradigm (again, really a warning from the gods) apparently was not only successful, but will work again in Denver. So he transfers his speech to an outdoor forum, where tens of thousands of raving fans can watch him apotheosize in front of a faux Doric temple and accept nomination.

Isn’t there one sane person on his staff who can stop this divine madness, a single henchman who can whisper in his ear as puts on his golden crown not Vero possumus (”Yes! We can!”), but as was true of returning heroes during Roman Triumphs—”Respica te, hominem te memento” (”Watch behind you; remember you’re just a man!”)?

I can’t believe they thought the temple motif was a good idea. Yeah, he’s a real man of the people who connects to average Americans…who among us doesn’t have the arrogance or ego to make a speech before tens of thousands in a setting reminiscent of where Gods are worshipped? This isn’t the Super Bowl halftime show, but you wouldn’t know it from the candidate they’ve chosen.

I’d like to think there’s no way McCain can’t take advantage of the opportunities laid out for him, but I have no confidence in that either. Ugh…

It;s realy interesting. It’s almost 11pm here in Japan. I generally watch Japanese News while surfing the internet. My Japanese isn’t that great but they pretty much seem to cover US politics down the middle (although they cover it alot) with very little opinion.

But for the last 30 straight minutes they have been interviewing Expats from around the world. (US, Europe and Iran) and ALL of them have been saying how Obama has NO experiance and how that is scary. For anyone who knows Japan, being publicly critical of anyone is pretty rude. If they are reporting this here, I can’t help but hope it is starting to finally hit your average swing voter in the US.

I miss being able to get a feel from coworkers about the general sense of the race in the US. But between this news report, MSNBC cracking up (Go Joe S!!), and Obama’s planned ascent to Mt. Olympus tommorow morning(my time) I am really feeling good!Hope I’m right!

No, I liked the idea, too, it’s just that I think we may be missing the mark here, because we’ve already got a lock on the loony vote and the messianists, so we need to be reaching out to other types of people… yeah, sane people. Hey, did George Allen speak in front of some columns or something? You seem anxious to make the point.

Slublog on August 28, 2008 at 10:00 AM

Word has leaked out that Obama’s speech will end with him being thrown a football from the front row. He will exit stage left on a dead run and make a break for the end zone. Arriving there he plans on spiking the ball and doing a victory dance.

I expect him to trip on the two yard line because there are no TelePrompTers ™ down there.

From Politico:

Republicans who are mocking Obama’s appearance haven’t mentioned it, but George W. Bush accepted his own nomination in 2004 on a set with a similar neoclassical theme, with columns rising on either side of him.

Why isn’t anyone here talking about this?

funny how after all the reports they were made to resemble a Greek temple they are now spinning and saying its the whitehouse. Which it looks nothing like

Didn’t the 2008 Virginia Republican Convention feature George Allen delivering a speech in front of big Greek columns?

Just saying.

I don’t know, baby. Did the Virginian Repubs act like George Allen was the frigging Messiah?

Fail at comparison!!!!

mjk on August 28, 2008 at 10:03 AM

While the Dems are getting nervous about the temple of the big “O”, the rest of the country had better get nervous about having this kind of thuggery (Chicago politics) forced down our throats for the next (4) years…

Just let the guy wear his mink coat and floppy hat and be done with it. Jeez, this is America.

I don’t see any way they can keep this from looking like a Super Bowl halftime show. It’s not going to look arrogant, it’s going to look like cheesy middlebrow entertainment, completely demeaning to the office of the President of the United States. That’s why I thought immediately of Idiocracy.

This is why the Faux Presidential Seal and the O Force One stuff has backfired on Obama. They are trying to make him look “Presidential,” but they don’t really understand what that means, and in fact what they are doing is making him look like a clownish cartoon superhero.

Obviously [greek] godhood isn’t above Obama’s ‘pay grade’…..

CrazyFool on August 28, 2008 at 10:05 AM

A lot of the criticism seems to be envy. So the people attending have to volunteer for the campaign, that is the problem with politics, is that everybody complains about politics from their lazy boy and doesn’t volunteer. I hear that McCain has no ground game at all. He would probably kill to be able to put on an event like this. You have people trying to make volunteering for a campaign sound nefarious, most of the time you have to cough up three figures just for access, and the paycheck to paycheck crowd usually cannot meet those requirements.

Yeah we can kid about the temple of O-pollo but Obama is most definitely changing politics, not into some post partisan, post racial type thing, what he and Dean are doing, and doing very well, is changing the game as far as volunteer work is concerned. They are actually running something that lives up to the term “campaign”. They have people on the ground, they are making the calls, and keeping their volunteers motivated. Should volunteering be without rewards? Not if you want to maintain large numbers.

From the South Park Movie..

‘Tell them we will have Punch and Pie’
‘We are not going to have punch and pie’
‘no one will show up unless we have punch and pie. Say that we will have punch and pie’

Anyone know know if Alex “The TRUTH Is Out There!” Jones will be up front leading the O-BA-MA-O-BA-MA Chant?

pilamaye on August 28, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Apparently, to the consternation of his party, Obama doesn’t want to lose these trappings of celebrity, either.

Could it be..? The entire Democratic Party is being thrown under the bus?

crazy_legs on August 28, 2008 at 10:11 AM

For the In the Tanks who got through the latest signups, Obama is a pure populist. Pure populists are dangerous individuals if they catch on. Hitler was a pure populist. Chavez is a pure populist. Aristede was a pure populist. Hussein was a pure populist. You see where this is headed. Populists are power mad. They, by their very actions and statements, encourage street justice. They pit the majority poor against the minority wealthy. And they’ll wink and nod at spontaneous acts of violence in the defense of their principles. I fear for that future.

Dear Pajama Pundit:

I know this is not my board, but could you please stop plugging your blog with every post? Some of us find it irritating and a little too obvious.

The other bloggers here link to their blogs through their names, or handles, or whatever they’re called.

I ask this kindly and as a favor.
