Democratic convention, night four: Eschaton to be immanentized in Denver

We’re fully three hours away from Zeus’s descent from Olympus, but the festivities at the temple have begun so here’s your thread to snark. The schedule’s thin until 8:30 p.m. ET or so, when Gore the Baptist comes forth to herald the arrival of The One. Hotline has a few unexceptional excerpts from an advance copy of the speech and the AP has a bit more. Surely this will be the first time in history that a classical Greek setting serves as backdrop for a catchphrase based on the title of an old sitcom.
I doubt I’ll watch, but video will be here later. In the meantime, two quotes for you to meditate on. Number one: “Here we were eating lunch, and it was like the clouds parted and the sun was shining in.” And number two: “At the CNN bar, where the voice of Wolf Blitzer just said everyone will remember where they were when Obama made his speech.” Exit question: A Stonehenge set would have been awesome, wouldn’t it?
Update: Here’s something meatier to chew on. Is there going to be a convention in Minneapolis next week?
Update: The gauntlet is tossed in the comments. Was “Eight Is Enough” a sitcom — or a dramedy? Let the debate rage!
Update: Here’s the transcript of Obama’s speech. Money line from the nominee of the party that’s trumpeted every last setback and downplayed every last gain in Iraq for the past three years: “I’ve got news for you, John McCain. We all put our country first.” That makes twice now during a momentous speech that he’s rewritten his own side’s history. See his 2004 convention keynote, arguing that “there is not a Black America and a White America and Latino America and Asian America” to a party sick to its core with identity politics, for the other.

And decongestants! Don’t forget that decongestants come from oil!
Is BHO going to take away our decongestants?
Oh no!!

Do us all a favor and show them a BBC documentary called “The Great Global Warming Swindle”.
Then if they keep wanting to believe the drivel their parents are feeding them, at least they’re informed idiots.

Didn’t DiFi take them away when she decreed that we have to leave a thumbprint ID to buy the damn things?
InTheBellyoftheBeast on August 29, 2008 at 1:36 AM
You realize that not everybody can afford a decongestant. It is time that the rich have their decongestants redistributed through a national health care system. Then everybody will have access to decongestants……as long as the supply doesn’t run out and the system doesn’t go bankrupt. Of course you could always try to score some black market decongestants from Mexico. Or fly to Japan to get your decongestants.

My first lesson is on the evils of DHMO – they fall for such lines as “all dictators have used it, and only a small amount can kill…” Then when they find out what it really is, I have em for the rest of the year. If I can turn them against something that is sitting on their desk, then know they can be had. Critical thinking – a lost art I am afraid.

I’ve said it before but I think there are some new faces here so I’ll give you my Palin pitch.
Palin can be out in front on oil drilling (ANWR).
Palin can make conservatives happy (Base).
Palin has a one time shot at taking Hillery Clinton voters that won’t be there in 4 years (PUMA).

Went over to the Draft Palin for VP blog, and it reminds me a lot of the bulletin boards we used to have for internet stocks – especially the secretive, seemingly knowledgeable guy with the “inside information” and unclear motives, and all of the people who really, really wanted to believe him.
On the other hand, I doubled my money trading internet stocks (before I lost it all) and knew some people who started earlier and did a lot better (though some of them lost even more).
So who knows? But it’s fun, and at least I haven’t bought any Palin on margin.

And the latex – think of all the latex products used in Nancy Pelosi’s district!
It also is used as the bio-absorbant base for hair plugs, so Biden’s just digging his own grave, as far as I’m concerned.
And as a cellulose binding agent for the cement used to dispose of certain packages in Obama’s home turf of South Chicago.
You certainly would not want someone like Big Pussy floating back to the surface of the family lakeside resort during the 4th of July weekend, would you?
So.. drill drill drill!

Thx cgoode777 – good to hear Corsi kept the book untainted by his other troubles, real or alleged. The ‘truther’ allegations kind of interrupted his momentum on the TV circuit so I hadn’t heard much in the meantime, but was hoping to hear something definite. Glad to hear he’s addressing that allegation too, and that the book’s selling well.
Also looks like I’ll have to avoid solid food and remove all sharp objects from the ‘immediate reading area’ before I crack the book and read page one ;-). Definitely sounds worth it, however.
P.S. Some of the gun ban particulars you all are dealing with in Chicago sound like something out of a bad, bad dream. Hope you are all able to stay safe until the judiciary cavalry finally gets its a– in gear.

I am watching THE speech replay on FNC, sound off. They cut in with crowd shots during the applause lines. The people look pleased, but they don’t look jazzed or going wild. They are just standing there waving their flags back and forth. Multply it by 85K and it looks impressive. But drill down, as they say in the polls, and it is a different story.

Traditional values? Who knows? And, anyway, how solid and complete is the sourcing on the “traditional” quote?
Once he makes the pick, hardly anyone is going to remember and fewer still will care about whatever headfakes or misdirection led up to it.
My personal guess – the world’s a lot of fun, but it’s not that much fun. I think Palin would be (or would have been) Joan of Arc for social cons – an explosively popular pick for the base, no matter how much Huck moped – but she’d be (have been) a mass mobilizer for choicers, too. You have no idea – or maybe you do – just how ugly they’d get. Just for starters, they’d accuse her of having a Down Syndrome kid for political purposes – not in so many words, but I’ve already seen it on lefty blogs. Maybe it would do the country good to get such ugliness out in the open, but between that kind of stuff and blowing up the mini-scandal and whatever else, not sure I could stand the “excitement.”

From Noel Sheppard — NewsBusters.org
MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann made his support for Barack Obama even clearer Thursday when moments after the junior senator from Illinois accepted his party’s nomination as president, the “Countdown” host assailed an Associated Press writer for having the nerve to not be as enthralled with the Messiah’s address as he was.
In Olbermann’s crosshairs on this occasion was Charles Babington who penned an article that largely mirrored the opinions offered on Fox News by liberal contributors Juan Williams and Nina Easton: the speech was short on specifics.
This didn’t sit well with Olbermann, who according to Markos Moulitsas, said the following:
Story Continues Below Ad ↓
Mr. Babington got the length of the speech wrong by at least 7 minutes. And this is analysis that will be printed in many, many newspapers, hundreds of them around the country. It is analysis that strikes me as having born no resemblance to the speech you and I just watch. None whatsoever. And for it to be distributed by the lone national news organization in terms of wire copy to newspapers around the country and websites is a remarkable failure of that news organization.
Charles Babington. Find. New. Work.
For those interested, here were some of the points Babington made which, frankly, I quite agree with:
But instead of dwelling on specifics, he laced the crowning speech of his long campaign with the type of rhetorical flourishes that Republicans mock and the attacks on John McCain that Democrats cheer. [...]
Obama’s aides have long complained that he gets too little credit for including detailed proposals in his stump speeches, because listeners seem to remember only his stage presence and lofty rhetoric. Obama, who earlier had promised a “workmanlike” speech in Denver, seemed to acknowledge the problem, saying he would fill in the blanks.
Mostly, however, he touched on major issues quickly and lightly. It’s an approach that may intrigue and satisfy millions of viewers just starting to tune in to the campaign seriously. The crowd at Invesco Field cheered deliriously, but Republicans almost surely will decry the lack of specifics.
For instance, Obama said it’s time “to protect Social Security for future generations.” But he didn’t mention his main proposal, which is to add a new Social Security payroll tax to incomes above $250,000 a year.
He said he would “cut taxes for 95 percent of all working families,” but did not say how.
He briefly mentioned abortion, gun rights, gay rights and other hot-button issues without delving into their sticky details.
Frankly, that’s what I saw, as did NewsBusters readers in our online chat. In fact, the liberal friends of mine that were communicating with me during this speech via e-mail were also disappointed with Obama’s lack of specificity last evening.
But, Olbermann loved it, and anybody that has the nerve to disagree with him will be lambasted. It must be marvelous to feel you have such great power when you work for the also-ran in the cable news industry.

No worries, but welcome!! In the primaries I was with Teh Fred! and switched to Romney, and I’ve been crossing fingers and toes for him, but I honestly hadn’t looked at the Palin idea very close. Two years as Governor could seem kinda thin, I guess, but it certainly beats the hell out of “two autobiographies and no legislation” Nobama!

Well, if McCain really chose Palin, he’s got huge, titanium balls. It’s a real gamble that she will be seen as an obvious affirmative action/PUMA pander. I hope she’s as good as her boosters seem to believe that she is….
I’ll vote and donate if it’s Palin, don’t get me wrong. She’s much better than Lieberman or Ridge. I hope they coach her to present her super pro-life stance in federalist terms. If Roe is overturned it just returns the issue back to the people so we can vote our consciences, which is what should have happened anyway.
with that, good night!

I’m thinking about running for President in 2012. I don’t have any executive experience – - nor have I served in any elected office at any level of government. However, I am not a Washington insider. I don’t think I personally know anybody there – - just seen them on TV, my computer and print media. In fact, I haven’t been to DC since my 8th grade spring break trip. Therefore, I will definitely bring a new way of thinking, and a breath of fresh air – - different air. It’s not even oxygen when I breath out. I have a dream – - I have had many dreams over my lifetime. Most of these dreams I don’t remember, and others I’d rather not talk about. Sometimes, I even daydream (usually when I’m bored). Anyway, I’ll be a good president. I will work very hard to reinterpret the 2nd Amendment to only mean that government officials can carry guns, and not ordinary citizens. It’s too dangerous, and you people are too stupid to carry a gun. Governement officials, on the other hand, know more than you do, are smarter than you, and need to enforce the laws – - you, the ordinary folks, are subject to the laws. I will tax the rich, and have them pay all of the middle class a monthly salary of $5,000 – - and if they don’t, they will be shot (only by a government official).
I need to go back to daydreaming, and will be back to provide more of my platform.

I’m just here for the
PALINMANIA!!!
Can’t sleep… too excited.
Looks like there’s a very good chance that it’s her plane on the ground in Middletown. The only question really is there any reason for her to be there if she wasn’t the VP?

MORE posts on the palinforvp.blogspot site….
a diff poster than the other guy, who the other posters are backing up as credible before on RNC movements sez:
“I just got the following from a Republican source in Oklahoma:
Sarah Palin’s charter plane has just landed in Dayton, OH. Word that Mark from FL and I are getting is that it is a pretty good rumor she will be the VP. Romney is OUT and never seriously considered as McCain cannot stand him — that comes direct from the campaign.”
